SCCM 2012 MDT 2012 UDI Require domain credentials to run task sequence
We are in the process of moving to SCCM 2012 integrated with MDT 2012 for OSD from using MDT 2012 by itself. We're trying out UDI task sequences and have noticed a pretty gaping hole in functionality vs MDT 2012 by itself: password protecting a task sequence.
In MDT 2012 there was a built-in feature that required domain credentials to run a task sequence. If one exists using SCCM/MDT 2012, I haven't been able to find it. I've only found stuff like this http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/2336-password-protect-a-task-sequence/ which
would allow you to set a password, but not authenticate against AD. So, I'm wondering if there are any options to protecting a task sequence with domain authentication?
My understanding is that the Refresh and Replace StageGroup only run when you kick off a UDI task sequence in Windows. That means I have to make a task sequence available to the Configuration Manager Client in order for a tech to run a Refresh/Replace. And,
that in turn means that the UDI task sequence will be visible to all users since it needs to be available to their computer. Or, am I completely missing how UDI OSD should flow? If so, then I hope someone can correct me.
I'd appreciate any help or advice you can give. Thanks.
Hi,
I am sorry to say that you are correct in your conclusions. There is no builtin way in ConfigMgr/MDT/UDI to require a domain username/password to run a task sequence, your option from Windows-noob.com is one way of solving it.

Thanks for the info. What about workflow? How do you usually handle UDI in Replace and Refresh scenarios? Do you deploy the task sequence to collections that users can access?

Dear,
We do not have Orchestrator running in our SCCM 2012 R2 environment. Though I wonder if we could accomplish the following scenario with it:
Task sequence Windows 7 => Orchestrator step which queries assigned installations to the computer object and installs them one by one.
Could you advise?
Kind regards,
Stev.
SteveWonB> > Define "assigned to computer objects". How is this done technically?
Well, computer objects are members of collections via AD memberships, like the collection "W7-Google-Chrome" (exists of 100 computer objects).
Deploy of packages is done to these collections. So a computer member of "W7-Google-Chrome" will automatically get Google Chrome.
Some computers are member of 30 collections, some of 80.
Goal is to have the task sequence run all applications/packages assigned (with their reboots if needed).
Kind regards,
Steven

Having issues with patches that require multiple reboots in a task sequence?
Are you guys having issues doing a build and capture or deployment, while including the recent patches ?
It looks like another patch is requiring multiple reboots which breaks the task sequence...
Long story short... the last time I created a .Wim file was in June (with ZTIWindowsUpdate) - it included all the patches as of June 2014. This image has been deployed since then with no problem. All the other monthly patches (07/08/09/10/11/12/01) can be
installed successfully through the deployment task sequence with no problem.
Then last week, I decided to create a new .Wim file to include all the patches as of January 2015. In my build and capture step, it exits because one of the updates requires multiple reboot. I checked on the following website and it has not been updated
since October 22nd : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2894518
Do any of you experiences issues with a WSUS that requires multiple reboot recently ?
Thanks! As mentioned, the MDT offline updates task will do it. Add it to your build and capture and it will do the work for you using the updates in an update package that you've previously created. Alternatively, use a stand-alone instance of MDT to create your
image (using a build and capture TS of course) -- this can then use a stand-alone instance of WSUS to install the updates into your image which you then import into ConfigMgr.

SCCM 2007 Failed to run task sequence, inaccessible distribution point package files
I am trying to deploy an OSD task sequence using a boot disk. After I boot up, select the task sequence it runs a test of dependencies. It then errors out saying program files are inaccessible on the DP. The file is the OS wim file.
Ive checked the log file and it is trying to connect to the share to download but it never can. In a command window i can map to the share fine. i also checked that the client network access account is set up and its also in AD. Not sure what else to check.
I assume i do not need to do any thing to give client network access account access to the share right?Have you tried accessing the location listed in SMSTS.log from the client?
Is there an error message?
Can you post the relevant snippet of the SMSTS.log

Yes, I can map the drive and copy files to it from the client (boot disk)

Hi,
Our MDT server is acting strange!
I have previously had this system running without problem - i could both capture and deploy computers as is and no changes have been made to mdt.
But my latest capture does not work. When i capture my reference maching in my VM environment it completes without errors and i can import the latest wim file.
When i deploy the tast sequence, it install the custom Wim image, but it ends up with "login" screen as the administrator i have entered for the capture/deploy sequence, but it goes to stop at this point and applications is not installed.
If i change the ISO in the task sequence under Install OS step, to a clean Win7 install media then the capture completes and install applications.
I have also tried to:
Capture reference without password
Capture reference without Windows updates

Run a powershell script with domain credentials during task sequence
I have a powershell script that adds the computer it is run on to a security group. If I log onto the computer with a domain account it works perfectly. However, if it is run while logged on as the local admin account it fails with an error message
that says the domain either doesn't exist or cannot be reached.
This is a problem because when a computer is being imaged the process runs with the local admin account. Is there a way to run this script with domain credentials in the task sequence?
Thanks,
AndyHow are you running the Powershell script? If you use a Run Command Line step, you can specify an account to run as. Something like "powershell %scriptroot%\psscript.ps1" where the psscript.ps1 is located in your Scripts folder in your deployment
share.

Sccm 2012 simulate deployment for task sequence / OS or applications
Hi
I have been getting a lot of problems with Os/Application Task Sequences and have been asked a few questions.
I cannot find anything on the Web about Limitations for a simulated deployment in SCCM 2012.
I know SCCM allows you to create them but does it work/Are the results accurate?
I need to know the following:
Can you simulate an OS Deployment Task Sequence?
Can you simulate an Application Deployment Task Sequence?
Are there limitations to Simulated Deployments?
Thanks guys Hope this makes sense and you can help.
Regards
AnthonyIf you have the MDT integration with SCCM 2012 you can simulate the settings used by the task sequence, but not the actual task sequence deployment. However, seeing the settings is often enough.
Check this post:

I want to use SCCM 2012 R2 and OSD, to boot a bare metal machine, install and OS, and bind it to Active Directory. The catch is that I want the deployment process in SCCM to prompt for the following pieces of information, and then use that information to
bind the computer to Active Directory (W/O using MDT) instead of supply the data in the task sequence.
Computer Name
Domain
Domain OU
Domain Join Account
I am approaching this in a similar fashion as stated in this blog.
http://osdblog.com/2013/06/26/add-a-prompt-for-a-computer-name-in-your-sccm-deployment/
I have added the following collection variables to the unknown computers collection:
When I launch the task sequence, I am prompted as I would expect. I input the desired information, the deployment competes, but it does not bind to the domain. Here is what my TS looks like. I intentally disabbled the apply Network Settings step
because it forces you to enter specific information if it enabled. I don't want to that, thus why I am trying to use the variables.
My SMSTS log does not have a whole lot of meaningfull data, but I can post it if someone wants to see it. The only possible thing I could think of would be drivers, their are some driver errors in the log. However, if I turn on the Apply Networking setting
process in the task sequence and turn off the variables, the machines bind fine. With that in mind, I would not think my problem would be driver related. Anyone out there have expertise in using a process like this, that could assist?
--TonyAwesome! Thanks. One more thing, how should I supply the OSDJoinPassword variable? Should I just enter %OSDJoinPassword%
for Password and Confirm Password? I can not tell if it will actually read it as a variable or try to use "%OSDJoinPassword%" for
the actual password.

MDT 2013 - Different settings per task sequence
Hi,
I'm trying to create different settings for different TaskSequenceIDs. For one TS I wanted to join the pc to a workgroup and do SkipApplications=YES and for the other TS I wanted to join a domain and do SkipApplications=NO. But I can't get it to work for
some strange reason.
I've tried and tested this solution https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/Different-settings-per-4faa55e9#content but it doesn't work.
I tried this too : http://www.the-d-spot.org/wordpress/2012/07/20/how-to-use-different-settings-per-task-sequence-with-mdt-2012/ but it doesn't work.
Perhaps MDT 2013 acts different then 2012 and 2010???? It would be nice if you could help me out on this one. :-)
Paul@fapw, we use the database for a few years now and we're quite familiar with it. But we're going to install MDT for a client and they don't have SQL and they don't want to have it installed on one of their servers. So that's why I'm playing with the customsettings.ini.
The first I made was for a plain and simple capture, then I added Make&Model and I'm making it more and more complex. The idea is to have a final customsettings.ini that imitates - or gets as close as possible to - what we have already accomplished with
the database.
In the meantime I've read that the skip-panels-stuff is something that stands above everything and thus it's not possible to control that using properties, like f.ex. MACaddress. Well, that's alright then.
But I've got GOOD news for you all : selecting values for variables based on TaskSequenceID DOES WORK in MDT 2013 and ADK 8.1. This is what I did :
https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/Different-settings-per-4faa55e9#content
So I've downloaded the vbs, created an "external" tasksequenceid.ini which is read at the beginning of my Task Sequence and booted up the pc. When you select the tasksequence of your choice the parameters get filled in correctly ! OSDComputername
was the variable that I used to show me if the other tasksequenceid.ini file was read or not. If yes, the computername would have to be my value, if not it would be MININT-randomnumber.
Only downside of this fantastic wizard is that going back to change one of your options is not possible anymore. The moment a variable has a value, it doesn't change anymore! That particular behaviour was messing up my tests yesterday. -
Image creation with MDT task sequence- "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown"
I'm using MDT 2012 U1 to build and capture a Windows 7 x86 image for deployment with ConfigMgr 2012 SP1. I'm using the standard client task sequence in MDT.
The MDT task sequence consistently fails after the reboot in the "Postinstall" group. The install OS, Copy Scripts, Configure, Inject Drivers, Next Phase, and Restart Computer tasks all execute successfully, then the MDT-initiated reboot
completes successfully. There is nothing else helpful in the SMSTS.LOG, these are the last entries in the log:
Successfully complete the action (Restart Computer) with the exit win32 code 0
Sending status message
Executing in non SMS standalone mode. Ignoring send a task execution status message request
Set a global environment variable _SMSTSLastActionRetCode=0
Set a global environment variable _SMSTSLastActionSucceeded=true
Expand a string %_SMSTSMDataPath%\Logs
Deleting file without retrying
The error message on the reference computer says, "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown" along with "An existing in-progress deployment was found but is not in an expected state. Would you like to ignore this in-progress
deployment and start a new one?"
I have found one post that suggested modifying customsettings.ini with HideShell=Yes, which I tried. It didn't help.
I am not sure why MDT thinks the reboot was unexpected? Has anybody run into this? What steps can I take to narrow down the problem?
Any help/suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks,
FPThanks for your reply Phil.
Setuperr.log is empty, zero bytes. Setupact.log looks good to me, it has these entries at the end:
OrchestrateUpdateImageState: Updating image state from [IMAGE_STATE_UNDEPLOYABLE] --> [Image_State_Complete]
OOBELdr.exe exiting with code [0x0]...
Process exited with exit code [0x0]
c:\windows\panther\SetupInfo succeeded.
c:\windows\panther\setupinfo.
Windeploy.exe exiting with code [0x0]
SetupSQM Started
Panther path is C:\windows\Panther
SQM not opted in
SetupSQM is finished
Our image environment was created during an MCS Engagement, so we have the solution pack and there are many variables in customsettings.ini. I will need to find out how to narrow this down but I'm not finding a log file that tells me where it's choking...
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks,

Unable to obtain task sequence from SCCM 2007
Hi,
I have problem to deploy OS to one of my new model laptop due to no NIC driver in boot media CD. When running task sequence wizard, i encounter error " unable to find a valid network adapter driver" and I have google it and get the solution.
However the task sequence did not deploy to my new laptop in SCCM collection.
Step that i use to deploy OS for this new model
1. Download new NIC driver into USB drive, load it during WinPE and able to obtain IP address
2. Add the computer to SCCM deployment collection using tool "SCCM add Computer to Collection v.1.0.0.3" with new netbios name and i saw it inside the collection
3 Task sequence did not push to this new model and from SCCM server i unable to ping it , it display error
"Ping request could not find host xxxxxx. Please check the name and try again"
Is that the reason of the failed deployment?
Regards,
Chungbdid it obtain IP address from DHCP server? is DNS server address is configured in DHCP scope? can you ping using IP address?
if drivers are proper will suggest to update it in boot media & enable command line support to make it easy for deployment & troubleshooting.

MDT Capture Task Sequence not working correctly
Hello All<o:p></o:p>
I need some help to tell me what I am doing wrong. I am using Hyper V and trying to capture a image of Windows 7 x64. From within the OS I run the
Litetouch.wsf from the deployment share. I get the normal MDT Wizard windows. I pick my capture task sequence and everything looks like it is running fine sys prep happens and I but back into windows PE I start to process the rules again and I am taken
back to the Select task sequence screen in WinPE. If I pick the capture task sequence again the deployment fails. <o:p></o:p>(posting for anyone else that found this page, this was my fix)
I had the same problem as the initial poster apart from what I wanted to capture was a 'real' pc. The reason my 'capture' task sequence wasn't booting into WinPE from the local disk and continuing on with the capture was because the local disk was
being wiped when the boot wim - LiteTouchPE_x64.wim, was being run.
A few weeks prior to me wanting to capture a PC I'd been working out how to stop the occasional error when you boot a PC off the WDS server - “The Task Sequence Has Been Suspended”. I was particularly interested in stopping this error as I want to
remotely start a Win7 install on a PC, this error would stop the install happening but I wouldn't see this error and end up visiting the PC only to find the install hadn't really started. After googling around, I found a page that explains how to edit
the unattend.xml file in the boot image - LiteTouchPE_x64.wim, in the xml file to run the command wscript.exe X:\Deploy\Scripts\LTICleanup.wsf. Sounded good so I done what the page said (myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/cnackers/archive/2010/10/20/microsoft-deployment-toolkit-lite-touch-lti-the-task-sequence-has-been-suspended.aspx)
but it didn't stop the message appearing. In the end I fixed this problem by adding the line 'SkipWizard=YES' in my customsettings.ini file. I didn't remove the LTICleanup.wsf from unattend.xml, it didn't seem to do any harm, that was until I tried
to capture a PC.
When I ran though my 'sysprep and capture' task sequence, the PC would sysprep ok and then reboot, ready to capture it. Instead of the 'capturing a WIM file' sequence I was expecting to see, I, like the original posted got shown the list of available
task sequences window. If you try again to run the capture sequence, it will fail as this has to be started in a running Windows environment, not in WinPE. After several hours wondering what is going wrong, I dawned on me what was going wrong,
the LTICleanup.wsf was being run when the boot image was being run and wiping my disk, a disk that was ready to run an existing task sequence, the capture sequence, no wonder it was failing. Removing the LTICleanup.wsf command from within unattend.xml
or rebuilding the boot image (by running 'Update Deployment Share' within MDT 2010) fixed the problem, the capture now worked.
Hopefully this will help someone else like me who was wondering what was going wrong with a capture. -
SCCM 2012 R2/MDT 2012 - Deploying Windows 7 UDI CustomSetting.ini setting not applying
I am using an MDT UDI task sequence to deploy Windows 7. The task 'Apply Operating System Image' has the answer file package and unattend.xml file in the correct location.
Within the CustomSetting.ini I have the setting SkipProductKey=YES but, during the deployment it stops on the product key page.
We do not need to input a key since we are using KMS. I did not have this issue in 2007 although I did not use a UDI task sequence. I'm sure I am missing something or it's not using the CustomSetting.ini for some reason or another.Hi,
Go to http://licensing.microsoft.com. You could download the windows 7 (KMS) Version ISO.
