SCCM 2012 & Server 2012 Dedupe

I’ve come across
a problem
recently with SCCM2012 on a server using Win2012 Dedupe.
We have been using the dedupe functionality & found huge savings, however have since had problems crop up with importing drivers for OSD.
After some digging around, we found a forum post saying that SCCM doesn't support reparse points which are used by Server 2012 Dedupe.
I’ve been unable to track down any more concrete information about this so wondering if anyone had more information about this lack of support & what it affects within
SCCM2012? E.g. is it only driver imports affected (in which case we can just exclude the drivers folder from dedupe), or should other folders (or the entire content volume) not be deduped.
Also, would this still apply if hosting source files on a remote file share that is using dedupe?
Cheers!

I'm unable to browse that link, I get a "page not found or you don't have permissions" error.
Checking through the open items on the feedback page for ConfigMgrVNetxt i couldn't see it either.
Yes, I know this is an old post, but I’m trying to clean them up. Did you solve this problem, if so what was the solution? This blog post will help you find the right connect page.

  • Fulltext search of binary files outside of database in SQL 2012/Server 2012

This may be more of a Windows Server 2012 question but I'm not sure.
I have a system that holds large amounts of binary files (pdf, doc, etc.).  The files themselves are held outside the database in a folder and a SQL table holds the metadata.  I used the Indexing Service available through Windows Server 2008 to
create a catalog called "EFCATALOG" to index the contents of the external folder, then created a linked server called MYIDXS which allowed me to query that external indexing catalog from within SQL with a query like this:
EXEC sp_addlinkedserver MYIDXS, 'Internal App', 'MSIDXS', 'EFCATALOG'
    SELECT * FROM MYDOCS
LEFT JOIN OPENQUERY(MYIDXS,'SELECT FILENAME FROM SCOPE() WHERE CONTAINS (''test'')') AS MYTBL
    ON MYDOC_FILE_NAME = MYTBL.[FILENAME]
With Windows Server 2012, I'm missing the functionality to create the indexing service catalog.  I've added the Windows Search Service and see how I can configure folders for searching, but there is no naming functionality for this and I don't see how
I can get the above query/structure to work in Windows Server 2012/SQL Server 2012 environment.  In fact, there isn't much at all online regarding the search service or the relationship back to the older versions in 2008 and before.
Is there any way to continue this structure in 2012?  I would like to avoid recoding my application to work with a different structure.  I'm afraid that changing everything to work with the FILETABLE/FILESTREAM functionality added in SQL 2012
will be necessary which is fine long term, but not convenient right now.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions/help.

Thank you Fanny Liu, based on your link the syntax has changed dramatically. I need to query SYSTEMINDEX now and the structure is very different.    It still seems that this new syntax requires creating a linked server of a different type.
    I've tried:
    EXEC sp_addlinkedserver @server = 'TEST', @provider = 'Search.CollatorDSO.1', @datasrc = 'SYSTEMINDEX', @srvproduct = '', @provstr='Application=Windows'
SELECT FileName FROM OPENQUERY("TEST", 'SELECT Filename FROM SYSTEMINDEX')
    Msg 7302, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot create an instance of OLE DB provider "Search.CollatorDSO.1" for linked server "TEST".
I've also tried using just "Search.CollatorDSO"as the provider since that is the provider name listed in management studio but basically the same error comes back.
    So I have 2 questions:
    1) Is it possible for my original process to work in Windows Server 2012 in any way (meaning that the OPENQUERY example I provided can remain relatively unchanged)?
    2) If change is necessary using this new SYSTEMINDEX and linked server combination, why is my linked server definition failing?  I'm using SQL Server 2012....Microsoft SQL Server 2012 - 11.0.2100.60 (X64)

  • Server 2012 DirectAccess and QOS

    Hi everyone,
Having read through the forums, I found a couple of threads on the limitations of QOS in relation to DirectAccess and I was wondering if this has been resolved in Server 2012/Server 2012 R2 or whether a work around is now available?
I'm trying to use DPM 2012 R2 for backup of multiple laptops which works well over DirectAccess; up to the point where it eats all the available bandwidth causing ping times to go over 1000ms and the internet connection to become more or less unusable.
    Thanks
    Chris

    Hi,
Not sure you can use Windows QOS because your trafic goes throught the IPSEC tunnel witch are encapsulated in HTTPS (common case but Teredo is also possible). QOS only see HTTPS, not your protocol Inside HTTPS+IPSEC. I'm not a DPM expert but for sure there
might have some ways to control consumed bandwdith at DPM agent level.

  • Cannot publish Flash Updates Verification of file signature failed for file SCUP 2011, SCCM 2012 R2 and WSUS all on same Windows Server 2012 machine

I am attempting to distribute Adobe Flash updates using SCUP 2011, SCCM 2012 R2, WSUS ver4 and Windows Server 2012.  Everything installs without error.  I have acquired a certificate for SCUP signing from the internal Enterprise CA.  I have
verified the signing certificate has a 1024 bit key.  I have imported the certificate into the server's Trusted Publishers and Trusted Root CA stores for the computer.  When I attempt to publish a Flash update with Full content I receive the following
    error:
2015-02-13 23:00:48.724 UTC Error Scup2011.21 Publisher.PublishPackage PublishPackage(): Operation Failed with Error: Verification of file signature failed for file:
    \\SCCM\UpdateServicesPackages\a2aa8ca4-3b96-4ad2-a508-67a6acbd78a4\3f82680a-9028-4048-ba53-85a4b4acfa12_1.cab
I have redone the certificates three times with no luck.  I can import metadata, but any attempt to download content results in the verification error.
    TIA

    Hi Joyce,
This is embarrassing, I used that very post as my guide when deploying my certificate templates, but failed to change the bit length to 2048.  Thank you for being my second set of eyes.
I changed my certificate key bit length to 2048, deleted the old cert from all certificate stores, acquired the a new signing cert, verified the key length was 2048, exported the new cert to pfx and cer files, imported into my Trusted publishers
and Trusted Root Authorities stores, reconfigured SCUP to use the new pfx file, rebooted the server and attempted to re-publish the updates with the following results:
2015-02-16 13:35:44.006 UTC Error Scup2011.4 Publisher.PublishPackage PublishPackage(): Operation Failed with Error: Verification of file signature failed for file:
    \\SCCM\UpdateServicesPackages\a2aa8ca4-3b96-4ad2-a508-67a6acbd78a4\3f82680a-9028-4048-ba53-85a4b4acfa12_1.cab.
Is there a chance this content was already created and signed with the old cert, so installing the new cert has no effect?  In ConfigMgr software updates I see 4 Flash updates, all marked Metadata Only (because they were originally published as "Automatic."
No Flash updates in the ConfigMgr console are marked as downloaded.  I can't find any documentation on how the process of using SCUP for downloading content for an update marked Metadata Only actually works.
    Comments and suggestions welcome.

  • Why is it not possible to move a SCCM 2012 Server to a new Domain?

    Hello everybody,
I know it is not supported to move a SCCM 2012 Server to a new Domain. But I am still missing why it is not supported or possible....
I could not find anything that explained it in detail on the forums/internet. So when the question comes up in front of a customer it is always better to have a good argumentation...Can somebody describe the reasons why??
Thank you very much in advance!

    Have them call CSS then.
It's ultimately the result of the design of the product but not an explicit decision. To my knowledge, it relies on the domain name for certain things and this is explicitly embedded with no defined way to change this. Could it be changed? Probably.
But, that would take a lot of work and effort and is not something Microsoft has ever invested any time in.
The grass is green and the sky is blue. Knowing why doesn't change these.

  • SCCM client deployment on windows server 2012 R2

    Hi All,
Can some one please share the information , step by step guide to install SCCM 2007 Sp2 client installation on windows server 2012 R2 machine. IF step by step guide is there this would be really helpful.
    Regards,

You have to install update http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2861663 to your SCCM server to adds support for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2.
Other then that should be the same as other client (Push\Logon Script\GPO etc.)
Please take a moment to Vote as Helpful and/or Mark as Answer where applicable. Thanks.

  • SCCM 2012 Distribution Point not working properly on a Windows 2012 Server

I have an SCCM SP1 site running on a Server 2008 R2 machine.  I had a couple of distribution points, also running on 2008 machines.  These served as DPs and PXE boot points.  I had no problems with these.
I resently added a Server 2012 machine, and set it up as a DP, with a PXE boot point.  The servers is part of a boundary group containing about 1500 clients.  I distributed all of packages that are included in my main task sequence, and am able
to PXE boot, and image machines successfully.
However, I am having problems deploying other packages and Windows update packages from this DP.  It seems like I am only able to deploy packages that have the "Copy the content in the package to a package share on distribution points" enabled.
If this is not enabled, the client will get the deployment policy, but will never download the package.  The "In Progress" tab for the deployment status will just say "Waiting for content".
I have checked the rereqs for IIS on the Server 2012 DP, also checked the firewall.  Everything that I see seems to be OK.  Are there other things that I can check to determine why this DP isn't working right?

    Hello,
According to the following description, this behavior would be normal:
If you configured the option Run program from distribution point on the
Distribution Points page of the Deploy Software Wizard, do not clear the option
Copy the content in this package to a package share on distribution points, because this will make the package unavailable to run from distribution points.

  • SCCM 2012 on Server 2012 and WSUS 3.0 SP2 on Server 2008

We are installing SCCM 2012 SP1 fresh into our development environment - the primary site server and the database (SQL 2012) are both being installed on Server 2012.
We have an existing WSUS box on a Windows 2008 (not R2) server - the WSUS server version is 3.2.7600.256.  We have set this up as the software update point.
For the purposes of this discussion, these are the server names (obviously obfuscated):
    Primary site server:  sccm.domain.local
    Database server:  sccmdb.domain.local
    WSUS server:  wsus.domain.local
On the primary SCCM server, I've installed the WSUS user interface (Install-WindowsFeature -Name UpdateServices-UI), in order to work with the remote WSUS server.
Updates synchronization appears to be working fine, but when I try to setup client distribution via SUP, I'm getting the following error in the Application event log:

As well as this in the WMC.log:

It would seem obvious that this is because of a mismatch in versions between the WSUS server version on wsus.domain.local, compared to the UpdateServices UI on sccm.domain.local.
Is there a way around this, without having to upgrade the WSUS server to Server 2012?
Thanks for any thoughts you may have!

Not really. As mentioned though, even the separate WSUS server is probably overkill. In ConfigMgr, WSUS is used to handle the update catalog and that's it. Clients do *not* report status to the WSUS instance and do *not* download updates from the WSUS instance.
No management is ever done in WSUS.
So, in reality, once a month, clients connect to WSUS to download the delta update catalog (delta compared to what they currently have) which usually comes out to about a few hundred KB (yes KB, not MB) -- this download is done via BITS. The server also
syncs the catalog from the WSUS instance, via the SUP, in a similar fashion. If you are using SCEP, the frequency will be greater, but the deltas will be much smaller.
EULAs, as needed, are also stored in WSUS and accessed by clients -- these are also quite small only a select few updates requires them.
That's it. Standing up a dedicated WSUS instance means having a server sitting there doing almost nothing else.
If you are concerned about load on the site server, then you should create a separate site system that contains the MP, SUP (and WSUS instance), and DP. Then, for HA purposes, you can simply build a second site system with these three roles also and HA will
essentially be automatic (from a client functionality perspective).

  • MS SQL Server 2012 Updates via SCCM 2012 R2

I'm trying to determine if SCCM 2012 R2 can manage and deploy Hotfixes, Updates and Service packs for SQL Server 2012. Can someone please confirm that SCCM can manage this, how to download SQL Server Hotfixes, Updates and Service Packs into SCCM and where
I can find instructions on setting up my MS SQL Server computers to receive SQL updates from SCCM.
    Thanks.

ConfigMgr absolutely can deploy updates and service packs for SQL. You just need to choose the versions you want in Software Update Point Products and Classifications. It's no different than deploying any other Microsoft updates.

Is it a good idea? I don't think so. I think SQL updates should be part of a carefully planned (and tested) manual upgrade.

  • SCCM 2012 SP1 with remote WSUS on Server 2012 and SQL Server 2012

I am rebuilding my SCCM 2012 lab on Server 2012 R2 x64 OS now.
I have 1 primary site, remote SQL server 2012, and remote WSUS server.
Is the WSUS console still required on my primary site running server 2012? If so are the below the correct steps to get this working?
    Install Console on primary server:
Go to Server Manager à Add Roles and features, Navigate to the features section.
    Remote Server Manager tools
    >Role Administration Tools
--Select Windows Server Update Services Tools Only
Are there any post hotfixes to install?
Intalling WSUS full version on remote server:
Go to Server Manager à Add Roles and features, Server Roles section.
    Windows Server Update Services
Do I need to select this as well on the remote wsus server? >Role Administration Tools -Select Windows Server Update Services Tools Only
Since my SQL server is on a remote server do I select the below only?
Are there any post hotfixes to install?

    Hi,
One Part of the question is already answered. The second part is: If you want to use a remote SQL Server you need to select exactly what you selected in your screenshot.

Hope you all can provide me a good solution on it I had no clue on this.
    Regards,

    Sam,
    Recommend you
    Remove SUP
    Remove WSUS role
Delete the SUSDB on the remote SQL server
    Reboot the server
    Reinstall WSUS feature
    Reinstall SUP
Take a look at my blog on installing a SUP on 2012 from the section 'Install WSUS on the remote SUP server'
    http://sccmentor.wordpress.com/2014/09/11/installing-a-remote-sup-in-sccm-2012-r2-on-windows-server-2012-r2/
Make sure you run the Post Install tasks as well.
    Cheers

  • How to find using SQL query application deployed on win 7 machines with SCCM 2012 server or user installed manually.

    Hi,
how to find using SCCM SQL query,  application deployed on win 7 machines with SCCM 2012 server or user/technician installed manually. Please let me know.

Thanks, is it not possible via any script also?
Like Torsten said, how can you tell the difference between CM12 installed applications and locally installed? Once you can answer that, then you can write report.

  • Server 2012 R2 - Dedup chunk store bigger than original data

    Hi there,
I have a fresh install of a Windows Server 2012 R2 as fileserver with deduplication enabled on several volumes. One volume shows a strange behavior after a couple of weeks in productive environment: Initially I had a dedup saving rate of ~10% (volume contains
mainly images), but after a few weeks, both UI and PowerShell report savings of 0 bytes.
What is really bad about this is, that the original size of the un-deduplicated files is about 880 GB and my volume has filled up to nearly 1 TB (no, data has not increased that much over time, only a few gig). Watching the volume using TreeSize (JamSoft)
I found out, that the dedup folder has grown to 990 GB!
I tried to run optimization and garbage collection with no luck. The main folder is DFS replicated and (still) doing initial sync - this may change files, but dedup is configured to dedup files after 0 days.
    Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Marc

    Hi Marc,
From the screenshot it seems that almost all files are put into Dedup folder.
Deduplication supports DFSR so I cannot confirm if it is the cause. However as the initial replication is still running and dedup schedule is set as 0 days, I think we can first eliminate one of them to see if issue could be fixed.
    A. So please test to disable Deduplication until initial replication is done - disable Deduplication could help you get rid of the current situation and if the issue is DFSR related, after initial replication is finished, files will not be edited so frequently
which should help on this issue.
Note: In order to speed up the initial replication, you can copy files to target server as a pre-staging so that data will not need to be replicated through DFSR. And if files will not be change during replication, you can use the new function of Windows
2012 R2 that to copy metadata to target server.  See:
DFS Replication Initial Sync in Windows Server 2012 R2: Attack of the Clones
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab/archive/2013/08/21/dfs-replication-initial-sync-in-windows-server-2012-r2-attack-of-the-clones.aspx
    B. You can also set Deduplication schedule back to 5 Days (the default setting) - You may need to redo an optimization to un-dedup all files (similar to disable dedup) first to get rid of current situation. As the schedule is set to 5 days, files will not
be dedup immediately which should also help on this issue.

  • SCCM 2012 SP1 SUP on Windows Server 2012

    Hi sccm guys,
I'm having Troubles to get the SUP role working on my Windows Server 2012. I'm using SCCM 2012 SP1. I installed (and did not configure) the WSUS role from the Server Manager. I Chose to install the DB on the local SQL instance (no WID instance).
Then I added the SUP role to the Server and configured it with the seperate wsus Administration site (Ports 8530 and 8531).
WSUS gets configured partially (Proxy Settings and "Products and Classification" Options only for Office and Windows)
The folowing error pops up in the wcm.log
Failed to set Subscriptions on the WSUS Server. Error:(-2147467259)Unspecified error
    Any clues?
    Cheers
