SCCM and Cluster Aware Updating
Hi All,
I have installed a Hyper-v 2012 r2 Cluster and would like to utilise the cluster aware updating mechanism and also use SCCM 2012 SP1 to manage the deployment of updates. I have checked online and the following article seems to suggest that both can
live together.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831367.aspx
My question is... has anybody got this working as yet? I have delivered the updates to the hosts but when I check to see what is available in the CAU tool it picks up nothing.
Cheers
Chris
Despite what the article says I would use any interoperability with extreme caution.

Using WSUS for Cluster Aware Updates and SCCM???
Can WSUS support SCCM and CAU(cluster aware update) from the same WSUS instance? E.G. If I have my SCCM infrastructure getting its patches from a server called SCCM01 lets say and the primary/central site is also on this box, can the WSUS instance on
this server support CAU or will that break SCCM? I ask because one of our admins did exactly this a few weeks ago and we end up having to reinstall WSUS. It could have been a coincidence but that WSUS instance had been running fine since it was built. Seems
kina strange it broke relatively quickly.
I've read plenty of sites that say to avoid meddling in the WSUS console once SCCM is installed but I can't find a specific technet article saying not to do this. I just built the 2012 environment and they're wanting to configure it the same way and I'm
refusing because I suspect it will break either SCCM 2012 or WSUS or both! Please if someone could point me in the right direction or offer some clarity I would very much appreciate it. So far all I've seen about CAU is that it does support SCCM and WSUS but
I can't find any documents saying what the repercussions of configuring CAU to use the same WSUS instance that SCCM uses. Thanks in advance. -KR.Correct, ConfigMgr is unaware of cluster updating or the WSUS capabilities around clustering.
Also correct that direct WSUS administration after WSUS is integrated with ConfigMgr is a bad thing. There is no specific article that says don't do "stuff" in the WSUS admin console but it is eluded to in the TechNet docs (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg712696.aspx) and
I do know that it is specifically unsupported. I also know from experience that it will/can cause issues.
Cluster patching with ConfigMgr can be done using multiple techniques including maintenance windows, Orchestrator, or other automation tools but there's nothing definitively built in

Cluster Aware Updating - Failed to restart - The RPC Server is unavailable
I have a 3 node Windows Server 2012 R2 Failover Cluster, and I'm having trouble getting Cluster Aware Updating to work properly. I have been able to successfully apply updates that do not require a reboot, however, anytime I have updates that
do require a reboot, the process fails. The error message says:
Failed to restart <ServerName>:(ClusterUpdateException) Failed to restart <ServerName>:(Win32Exception) The RPC server is unavailable ==> (Win32Exception) The RPC server is unavailable
I have verified that the firewall rule to allow automatic restarts is configured according to Technet: Requirements and Best Practices for Cluster-Aware Updating
I have also made sure that the CAU AD account has local admin rights, as well as "Force shutdown from a remote system" rights on each of the cluster nodes. In this case, I have been applying updates manually from my workstation (which is not a
member of the cluster) while logged in with Domain Admin rights (as opposed to letting the cluster update itself based on a schedule). I'd like to verify that the entire process works properly before letting it update itself. What am I missing?Hi Duct tape and super glue,
Could you offer us more information about your environment status now, such as
CUA Role name is online or not, firewall settings and the event ID, “The RPC server is unavailable” is the typical caused by the WMI or DCOM communication was not running or block, please verified that the firewall was set correctly, WinRM
is enabled.

Cluster Aware Updating - can't install cluster role
Looking for some assistance with enabling cluster aware updating. I currently have an 8-node cluster for Hyper-V running Windows Server 2012 R2. While trying to enable Cluster Aware Updating, it fails on the actual creation of the cluster role and I receive
the following error message:
There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper.
I'm not seeing any other information in event viewer, etc. that I can use to troubleshoot this. Has anyone come across this before? Thanks.Eventually found my own solution. I was receiving that error because the Windows Firewall service was turned off on all cluster members. After enabling the Windows Firewall service, I was able to get past the error message.

Cluster aware updating via WSUS
I can't seem to find this information anywhere,
I have setup a 2 node hyper-v 2012 baremetal cluster and configured it with cluster aware updating role (CAU)
the environment is not internet facing and the updates need to come through a local WSUS server, a capability
mentioned
in many articles, however no guidelines on how to actually do it
CAU is configured with the microsoft.windowsupdateplugin in self-updating mode
I'm not sure how to point the CAU role to the local WSUS host, obviously no updates are occuring since there is no internet access to the MS update servers and WSUS cannot simply be auto-discovered
has anyone done this or know how to make this work? I can only assume I would have to pass on some sort of argument to the CAUpluginArguments field with the http/s link to the WSUS infrastructure but can't find the proper string
thanks in advance,
arminFor clarity, when setting up the special GPO to send the WSUS settings to the cluster, what is the best way to configure the "Configure Automatic Updates" policy? Is it to '3 - Autodownload and notify for install' and then the CAU client on the hosts
will take it from there?
It must be AUOption='3'. It's the only way to ensure the binaries are available for installation when CAU kicks off the update, and still not involve the configuration of a
scheduled installation event.
The technet seems to suggest that both option 2 & 3 on that list would work,
I would be skeptical of AUOption='2'. How are the binaries going to get downloaded? If CAU tells the WUA to install updates, and the updates are not downloaded, ready for installation, nothing's going to get installed. (Unless somebody is claiming that CAU
will also launch a download. However, that would unnecessarily extend the amount of time needed to patch a given node of the cluster, so certainly an undesirable configuration at best. Much better to have all files downloaded
before launching the installation task.
I'd also point out that if you're implementing CAU, there's no reason NOT to let the binaries download automatically. AUOption='2' would be used when you want to control WHEN the binaries are downloaded by launching the download interactively.
Is it correct to apply the WSUS GPO to that whole OU, to all 4 machine names?
The GPO is just a methodology to configure a Windows Update Agent with the desired settings. Neither the GPO, nor the WUA, care whether it's on a cluster node or not. What's correct is to configure the machine the way you want it configured.

Cluster Aware Updating - Multiple at once?
SO we have two clusters running Server 2012. If I kick off Cluster Aware Updating on one cluster, can I then disconnect from that cluster, join our other one, and kick off updating on that one?
I know when i connect to one from the other it tells me it will disconnect me from the first one but I don't know if that means it will stop or if it will keep going and I just can't see what it's doing.
Thanks!I'm not sure I understand your question. Cluster aware updating can be scheduled on each cluster independent of anything else that is in your environment. I don't know what you mean when you say you 'disconnect' from one cluster and
'connect' to the other. Are you logging out of one cluster and into another?
. : | : . : | : . tim
So when I run the Cluster Aware Updating program, I get a dropdown box where I can choose which cluster I want to connect to. I pick one of them and then click Apply Updates and go through the wizard. This then starts that cluster updating and
I can sit and watch it install, reboot, etc.
While that's running, if I try to change the cluster I'm viewing to start the updates on the second cluster, I get an warning box that if I connect to the other cluster, the first cluster will stop updating which is not what I want. I just wanted a
way that I can kick off updates on one cluster and then kick them off on another cluster so they'd both be going at the same time. -
Cluster-Aware Updating
i am reading about Cluster-Aware Updating and i installed on my hyper failover cluster .
Till now i have some questions ....
why should i use Cluster-Aware Updating although i have wsus installed in my enviroment ?????
can we said Cluster-Aware Updating is replacment of WSUS ?
i installed Cluster-Aware Updating but till now when i click on ( preview updates for this cluster ) i didnt anymore updates .
please need help in this matter .
thanksHi Moonlight2000,
Cluster-Aware Updating is not a replacement for WSUS: it's the feature that helps update all cluster nodes automatically - you need setting up updating just for the cluster itself, not for each of its nodes. Otherwise you would need to update each
node one by one and it would be you who's responsible for updating each node exactly in the same manner as others.
Regards,
Michael
Thanks for all your help
but still have one issue :
i installed Cluster-Aware Updating but till now when i click on ( preview updates for this cluster
) i didnt anymore updates .
how can i ensure am installed CAU correctly ?
how can i know from where CAU takes updates from wsus or Microsoft update ?
thanks -
MDT: deploy a WSUS-server/SCCM and include Windows updates?
Hi,
I'd like to deploy an sccm-server which will contain a WSUS-server. However, this SCCM-server itself should go to Internet and download all updates available. How can I achieve this in a tasksequence step?
Pls advise.
J.
Jan HoedtIs this an MDT question or an SCCM question?
The SCCM server would need the Software Update Point role installed but that doesn't make it a WSUS server, per se. SCCM uses the metadata from WSUS to download updates to packages. It does not function like a standalone, traditional WSUS server.

SCCM and Windows Update Client Configuration
Hello,
I am in the process of migrating SCCM 2007 client over to a new SCCM 2012 R2 site.
I deleted the AD site from 2007 and added it to 2012 and the client is pushed via Client Push. The client upgrades fine and things go well but
I run into a little problem after the client is installed.
Basically it seems to be an issue with how SCCM interacts with and controls Windows Update settings on the SCCM client. I ran into a somewhat of a major issue that caused
all (or many) of the newly upgraded clients to go the internet to download updates from Microsoft shortly after the move from the 2007 site and client upgrade to 2012. This was because the client (or at least the ones I checked) had their WU settings to “Always
download and install” (or something similar). Obviously, expected behavior with this setting, but the question is how did it get this way?
Does SCCM control any of these settings? I know it take over the WSUS settings, etc, but I didn’t think it does anything with the WU client itself.
From my understanding the WU client settings are done via GPO (local or domain) or WU setting and SCCM does not control these settings.
I’m not looking for you to solve the problem, because it’s quite tedious, I’m just hoping that someone can lead me in the right direction to find out what if any WU settings
are controlled or changed by SCCM 2007 or 2012.
Thanks
Angelo
AngeloThanks for the extra info, Idan. I should probably admit that I am an AD admin and SCCM is handled by someone else in my department. My main issue with the LocalGPO is the Event 1096 corruption that causes all admin template settings to revert
to defaults - currently happening on over 100 workstations in our environment. 100% of these problems are caused by LocalGPO corruption and nothing else. And we will pursue resolution of this issue with Microsoft because we agree that resolving
this problem is the primary goal.
But for the sake of understanding: We don't have any non-domain members that need to be managed by SCCM. If we had a policy stating "no SCCM client configurations resulting in a LocalGPO file are to be implemented in production - all are
to be done via Domain Group Policy," is it possible to eliminate the LocalGPO entirely? Or will there always be a LocalGPO file regardless of whether or not there are settings visible from it in a gpresult report? We would not need to match
SCCM configurations in Domain Group Policy because we would not make any changes to the SCCM client resulting in a LocalGPO file at all. The slow link detection is not of concern to us because none of these settings that would not apply in this case
are SCCM-managed via LocalGPO (as far as I know):
http://blogs.technet.com/b/musings_of_a_technical_tam/archive/2012/02/27/gpos-and-slow-link-detection.aspx
Another reason why I would prefer to do these settings in Domain Group Policy is that we have Advanced Group Policy Management installed in our environment, which is subject to our Change/Release process. We can track the changes being made to clients
much more easily when they are done via AGPM. Any changes that we want to make via SCCM client could be tested first to see how LocalGPO is effected, and then those changes could be made via Domain Group Policy instead in production.
Given this info, I'm still struggling to understand why it is recommended to implement anything via SCCM client configurations resulting in a LocalGPO file. So far, the only compelling reason is that management of non-domain members is not possible
via Domain Group Policy, but that doesn't apply to our environment. Is it recommended mostly for ease of administration, so that an SCCM admin doesn't need to work with another tool (Domain Group Policy)? Any extra reasoning for this recommendation
that anyone can provide is much appreciated! -
Metalink mentions that the Cluster aware cache can only be seeded using ibots or using SAseed command line.
Does nayone one know if progress has been made so that answers query also results in cache seeding? Also wondering if Marketing segmentation queries can be seeded. ( we tried and do not see any chache using anwsers and marketing).I assume you are talking about coherence.
Cache should be shared across WebLogic clusters, as long as the coherence client node (the individual weblogic server) is configured at network level to connect to the same Coherence Cluster (see tangosol-coherence-override.xml for more info on network parameters). Updates to a cached object should be reflected across all instances of Coherence cluster.
you can choose to which Coherence cluster to connect by passing to CacheFactory.getCache() a classloader where a separate Coherence configuration has been loaded
this is all I know about coherence :o) .
If someone finds this info is wrong, please correct me.

Cluster aware cache - CacheFactory.getCache()
Hi,
Is the Cache object created using CacheFactory.getCache() is cluster aware?
We would like to store cache data which is available across clusters.
These are meta-data and need not require to be updated frequently.
Hence if we create Cache and store it using the CacheFactory.getCache(), will it be available across all the clusters?
Could you please confirm this?
Thanks

I am trying to update our Adobe Reader and Acrobat Pro to 11.0.10 using the default MSP packages with SolarWinds Patch Manager. All of the systems keep reporting as 'NOT APPLICABLE'. All of the workstations have Reader11.0.09, with about 10% still on 11.0.08 (due to the fact that the reader 11.0.09 package only patched about 2/3 of the systems). All systems that have Acrobat Pro are 11.0.09.
In SolarWinds I am using the "Adobe Systems, Inc. Packages" node.
Adobe Systems Acrobat 11 Catalog
Adobe Systems Reader 11 Catalog
and the SW Patch Manager downloads the msp's straight from Adobe.
I have checked the msp's manually and they will update at least back to 11.0.07 in Reader, and 11.0.0 in Acrobat Pro. (I had an old stand alone system that still had Reader 11.0.07, and I did a new install of Pro and went straight to update 11.0.10)
The SolarWinds Tech said, "Okay. That content is produced by Adobe. Any questions concerning applicability logic or diagnosing why a package reports as NotApplicable when that's not expected would need to be directed to Adobe, as they are solely responsible for that content and its behavior".
I am new to SolarWinds Patch Manager, and any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. It sounds like you are attempting to use the SCUP catalogs outside of the MS solution. I can almost guarantee you that Adobe didn't test it if it's not referenced in the ETK: 11 SCCM-SCUP — Enterprise Administration Guide
That being said there "should" be logging available in any deployment solution. Since I am not familiar with Solar-Winds particular solution I can't say if it logs errors and how verbose those logs might be. If you have logs then post the output and the forum members "might" be able to assist you.
