SCCM noob!

Hi,
I'd be grateful if someone could point me at a kind of "...For Dummies" intro to SCCM 2012 (preferably in video form).
We're investigating whether SC as a whole could replace our current asset management tool and add a few extras (like VMM for example). I've installed CM on a test server (stand alone site) and it's gone fine... but I can't actually get it to do
anything. I had a look on MVA but couldn't really see anything suitable.
I know SC will need a lot more planning than this to actually go live, but right at this second I could do with seeing some of the basics like... Remote Control, packages etc.
Many thanks,
Rhidian

  • SMS_EXECUTIVE service missing, will not reinstall -

Update: The answer points to a forum post that indicates that the system environment variables tmp and temp need to point to C:\Windows\Temp. In our environment these variables pointed to a folder called 'temp' in the root of whatever drive was being
used at the time. Ultimately the issue I had was resolved by creating the 'temp' folder on the installation drive. So in my experience, they don't necessarily need to be pointing to the standard temp folder.
Recently I noticed a handful of our DPs/SMPs were all having an issue. Component Monitor said that the SMS_EXECUTIVE service wasn't running. I checked, and none of the affected servers had that service installed. I removed all the site systems from SCCM
entirely, then started to try to reinstall the systems  one at a time.
I noticed that the Distribution Point role would install just fine, but the SMP role would fail. It's not clear to me what the failure is, as sitecomp.log basically just says that the installation failed and will be restarted. I know that the SMS_SERVER_BOOTSTRAP
service is being installed and I can see it running when it's performing operations.
I'm at a loss as to what is causing the issue. I'm an SCCM noob, so any guidance at all would be appreciated.

I did a find/replace on our server FQDN and apparently misspelled 'local'. The actual FQDN being used is correct, though.
That link is interesting, as the system %tmp% and %temp% variables on our servers point to '\TEMP'. While I'm not entirely discounting that theory, it doesn't explain why some servers are unaffected, while others are. These are all 2008 R2 servers, and are
all configured the same. Due to network restrictions we currently have a DP/SMP at nearly every single physical location that we have across the state, as of right now there are 70 of them in total, and end state will be 76. Only 11 of those 70 are exhibiting
    this issue.
I did notice that on the drive that we're installing the role compnonents to that there is no 'temp' folder, I've added that folder and will attempt a reinstall on one of the servers to see how it goes.

  • Configure pull DP concurrent distribution settings

Like the name says, SCCM noob here, so please bare with me.
My question is, is there a way to configure pull DP concurrent distribution settings? I know there's a way to do this at the site level, but is it possible to do this for individual Pull DPs? I thought this could be done with a custom client device setting
but that only gives me the ability to throttle traffic
Any help would be greatly appreciated :)
    Thanks in advance!

    Yep you nailed it.
I haven't been able to find anything in terms of documentation for what we're trying to accomplish, it's good to know that it's not my inability to Google properly!
Ideally, we'd like to deploy 1 package at a time, but that's rarely the case.  The packages are pretty big typically, and the remote locations can't afford the complete bandwidth consumption.
We're toying with the idea of placing true DPs at slower remote sites so we can have total control of the concurrent distribution settings. However, I'll look into a regedit solution.
Again, I really appreciate the help Jason!

  • SCCM 2012 - sms_notificaiton_server install fails, bgbisapi.msi could not be installed

    Hi,
installed a SCCM 2012 R2 Primary site on a 2012 R2 server on the D: drive. Everything seemed to go well, however i am am now encountering issues with the SMS_NOTIFICATION_SERVER in that the site component manager is unable to install it. The status message
viewer informs me that, "Site Component Manager failed to install this component, because the Microsoft Installer File for this component (bgbisapi.msi) could not install."
When i check the Bgbsetup.log, i see the following lines:
    <01/19/15 14:46:27> CTool::RegisterComPlusService: Failed to unregister D:\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\bin\x64\microsoft.configurationmanager.bgbserverchannel.dll with .Net Fx 4.0

Having done a bit of reading, it seems a few other people have come accross this issue before:
    https://rikkoss.wordpress.com/2013/12/11/tip-do-not-change-the-default-installation-location-for-configmgr-2012/
    http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/7401-sms-notification-server-failed-critical-sccm-sp1-sql-2012-sp1/
The solution for these folks seems to be to edit 2 files in the .Net folder,InstallUtil.exe.config and Regsvc.exe.config,
    and insert the following code:
    <runtime>

    </runtime>
However, this hasn't worked for me and i'm still getting stuck with the same error messages. Since i'd really like to avoid reinstalling SCCM on the C: drive, can anyone suggest any possible solutions to this issue?

    The MPsetup.log has this:

Had a go at removing the MP, disabled the UAC and reinstalling the MP. Same result unfortunately...The server is temporarily housed in a block GPO OU so group policy shouldn't be an issue. Thanks for all the help so far!

  • SCCM 2012 SP1 CAS - Unable to sync to Microsoft Updates Sites

    Good Day SCCM Experts.
I would like to seek your help in resolving my issue in MY SCCM CAS, the problem is that CAS is unable to sync to microsoft update. The last good sync was on July 16, we have previously encountered an error and ended up reinstalling the WSUS/Software Update
    Point.
I have followed the instruction for installing the WSUS on this link:
    http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/5683-using-system-center-2012-configuration-manager-part-5-adding-wsus-adding-the-sup-role-deploying-the-configuration-manager-client-agent/
Also pls take note, CAS doesnt have any full internet access. We have only added a proxy on the internet connectivity settings.
First error we have encountered before re-installing the role:
Sync failed: UssNotFound: WebException: The request failed with HTTP status 404: Not Found.~~at System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHttpClientProtocol.ReadResponse(SoapClientMessage message, WebResponse response, Stream responseStream, Boolean asyncCall).

    Any insights is much appreciated.
    Thanks and best regards.

    Hi,
According to the log, you got a HTTP 404 error, file not found.
Since it worked before, what has changed since then?
How many updates did you install after the last synchronization? Especially for update those applied to WSUS server itself.
As per the log, you are running WSUS 3.2, the update could be
    KB2720211, KB2734608, KB2828185
And this thread provides good troubleshooting step though it WSUS without SCCM:

i'm still a noob to sccm, but here is my problem.  i'm trying to build and cap a win7x64 eprise image.  it gets to the setup win & sccm client then dies.  i had this exact same problem a couple of weeks ago but cannot remember how i fixed
it.  i'm 90% certain this has something to do with drivers.  it seems like i had to dload the dell winpe drivers and it worked.  no go this time. the smstslog is below.  this seems to be a common problem, but i haven't really seen a good
resolution.  by that i mean, it doesn't work for me :)

  • Why is member count 100 for all users sccm collection

    hello,
I have SCCM 2012 SP1 -4, and have enabled user discovery but "all users" collection does not goes above 100 member count.
I do have more 1500 users in AD, all related setting are at default.
    Disable \enabling was no help,
no component shows warning or error.
    Thanks

Hi. what about adusrdis.log? and are you correctly configuring AD user discovery? see this for example

  • SCCM 2012 SP1 and MDT 2012 Task Sequence Templates, MDT File/Settings Packages

We're setting up SCCM 2012 integrated with MDT 2012 for our OSD. My main issue is finding actual reference material for the MDT task sequence templates when integrated with SCCM. The MDT documentation has a lot of information on variables and task sequences
    outside of SCCM integration.
One thing I'd love to find information on is what's actually going on during an MDT Client Task Sequence template. I found this http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/645a77b2-5be6-431d-818c-57d24b1435cc/understanding-mdt-task-sequence?forum=configmgrosd but
it doesn't delve into the kind of detail I'm looking for. I can dig up information through the MDT reference material on some things, but I just can't find anything out there that actually walks you through an SCCM/MDT task sequence template. For instance,
under State Restore what is being referenced in Install Software with base variable name PACKAGES, vs Install Applications and base variable name COALESCED APPS. And, where are you supposed to put these applications? That's just a specific example, I'm hoping
to find some kind of walkthrough.
Two things I'm hazy on are the MDT packages. What exactly are the MDT Settings Package, and the MDT Files Package? What are they used for? What benefits do you get out of using them? And, how exactly do you use them? I know one of them has something to do
with customsettings.ini, but what's the point of using SCCM with MDT if you still have to muck around in the customsettings.ini file?
Either way, it seems like there are a lot of references to SCCM task sequences, and a lot of references to MDT task sequences. But, not together. Which is a bit annoying since the MDT-integrated task sequence templates are very obviously different than either
SCCM or MDT by itself. Any help would be appreciated, even just information on where to look. Maybe I'm just really bad at finding reference material for SCCM/MDT. Thanks.

When MDT integrated with SCCM, We need the following MDT components to be created:
    MDT Boot image
    MDT Toolkit Files
    MDT Settings
The MDT boot image (for example) gives you extra abilities over the standard ConfigMgr boot image such as the ability to display a HTA Refer here:
    http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/forum/98-frontends-and-web-services/
MDT Files once created, you will find UDIWizard_Config.Xml file in which you can start User driven Installation OSD using UDI designer.
Refer these links for better understanding:
    http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/5131-using-sccm-2012-rc-in-a-lab-part-16-integrating-mdt-2012-rc1-with-configuration-manager-2012/

    Thanks, Prabha G
Thanks for the quick reply. But, what about the MDT Settings Package? Also, both have a pretty big folder structure for each package. Surely it does more than just provide a couple xml and ini files? I'm not looking for anyone to spoon-feed me the information,
but at least a pointer in the right direction for finding the reference material. It seems for SCCM/MDT integration you have to go all over the place finding scraps of information to put together.
Also, any info on the SCCM/MDT task sequence templates? Thanks.

  • SCCM 2012 Reports not visible

I am unable to view Reports in the SCCM CM 2012 console and the URL.

  • SCCM 2012 R2 CAS or not CAS

    Hi.
Sorry for the noob question but here it goes:
We are planning to implement SCCM 2012 R2 on our organization. We have offices across the country as well as web clients. We have multiple forests and domains that are going to have a 2-ways trusted rellation with a new domain where we're installing SCCM
    as well.
The planned hierarchy is to install a primary site on each office, on a DMZ and on the new "mother" domain.
My question is, can I run reports on a primary site and get the full view of the infrastrucure and all clients, software, etc..?
Can I, from domain "A" site "A", get a report on the clients of site "B" domain "B" or is it better (or the only way) to get a CAS?
    Thanks in advance

Just to reinforce the above: NO CAS!
Nothing you have stated above requires a CAS and as pointed out, the *only* technical criteria that requires a CAS and multiple primary sites is a managed client/device
    count of 100,000+.
ConfigMgr does not in any way care that a client is in a different forest (trusted or untrusted -- the only exception is for user targeted deployments in untrusted forests because ConfigMgr has no way to know about those users).

  • Replacing the primary site server, SCCM 2012 R2

    Hi,
Setup is currently SCCM 2012 R2 with the primary site server on Windows 2008 R2 on a Hyper-V VM with a separate physical SQL server on 2008 R2 (Windows and SQL). I'm not making any changes to the SQL server at this stage.
I want to completely replace the primary site server VM completely with a brand new VM using Windows 2012 R2.
I was looking to run the SCCM setup and using the Expand an existing stand-alone primary into a hierarchy option but it wont let me do that due to "The site code you specified should not be the same as the primary site's site code".
So seems this Expand an existing option isn't the right option for me?
Do I just add the new server in the SCCM console and add all roles and test and then delete the roles from the old server?
    Thanks
EDIT: I have 7 Secondary sites, so I dont want to just start over by doing some sort of backup and restore to the new server unless someone can tell me that wont break my hierarchy.

a backup and recovery is the correct way to do this, but there are a few things you should keep in mind.
Do a backup of your current environment and shut everything down.
install new vm, ensure the configuration is identical, (dns, hostname, etc...); install the same software and pre-requisites,
    do a recovery
check the following links on how to do a backup and restore:

  • SCCM 2012 r2 with CU1 - XP Refresh

    Hi Everyone,
Hoping someone out there can assist with this. I am doing a refresh for XP to win7.  I have read
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/6e934990-999a-4367-860a-3ce4e5eda956/sccm-2012-r2-error-0x800700c1?forum=configmanagerosd
    and
    http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/9418-referesh-task-sequence-from-xp-fails-on-sccm-2012-r2/
none of these work.  I took a look at this and I was able to get pass the staging of the boot image
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/brandonlinton/archive/2013/06/21/how-to-create-and-import-a-winpe-3-1-boot-image-for-use-in-configmgr-2012-sp1-cu2.aspx
however when the machine rebooted I received this.  I also inject the nic drivers using dism and still the same issue. Any idea of a fix or how to go about refresh for
    XP using sccm 2012 r2?
    thanks all!

    Hi,
Also ran into this issue, you're encountering this error because some components are missing in your WinPE image.
Note that this refresh scenario is not supported, however you can get this  to work by manually customizing (especially importing WMI component) your WinPE image
    before importing it ConfigMgr.
I made the script below, ran in on a base WinPE image from WADK for Windows 8 (a 6.2 version image so) to make it work (sorry for french comments Inside but I'm sure you'll get it :) ):
