SCCM OSD Reference Image / Install Application Failure

We are running 2012 R2 CU2 and are trying to build and capture a reference image for windows 8.1, his is not a MDT task Sequence.  The image (WIM) seems to lay-down correctly however none of the applications seem to install and I believe it is because
the default build and capture sequence never actually logs in as a user?  There are no requirement of the application preventing installation and the 'use in TS' check box is checked on the applications.  Any thoughts.

Have you examined the smsts.log?
Does the deployed OS have connectivity?
Have you added the SMSMP property to the Setup Windows and ConfigMgr task?

  • OSD reference image starts perfect, then begins to degrade resulting in BSOD during OSD

    SCCM 2012 R2 on Server 2008R2.
We create our thick reference images in MDT after Patch Tuesday with a build and capture. We don't change our SCCM Deploy Windows TS so the package ID stays the same and we simply overwrite the old .Wim file each time. Our problem is that everything starts
out great and our Tier-2 techs are able to image machines as expected. But over time (it could be a week or a few days) during deployment machines begin to BSOD, get stuck with black screens with only a cursor, or Boot\BCD at the very end of the TS as Windows
starts services, or it'll build seemingly fine and MS Office will try to install for every user and the Windows search bar is missing. Just a bunch of weird nuances. But here's the kicker, if we build in a VM everything is perfect and works the way we designed
    it in the reference build.
This TS deploys two OS's, The x64 begins to degrade, the x86 continues without any problems
The same reference image in a separate site (for testing) works fine with no issues. (SCCM 2012R2 on Server 2012)
After replacing the reference image Wim file the builds work, immediately
We only use boot media for our TS, no PXE
We build in the same OU for testing and production which blocks inheritance
Where ever you go, there you are.

Why don't you add the new image to SCCM through the GUI like it's supposed to be done?
I think saying "supposed to" is a bit argumentative, especially since MDT integrates with SCCM. However, we want a clean non-site specific image so we can use it with more than one site. We use SCCM for OSD only, the SCCM agent does not remain after the
image is deployed on the client. Automating the image creation with Powershell in MDT is also a huge benefit.
Regardless, the image begins just fine. It seems something is changing in the environment over time and that's the real issue I believe, not our proven image creation method we've been using for well over a year. It wasn't until we upgraded from SCCM2012
to SCCM2012R2 that we began to see issues.
Where ever you go, there you are.

  • OSD Reference image

    Hi
I searched the net for the answer but can't seem to find any good explanation for my situation.
I would like to know if you can use reference image (Build and Capture) created on one SCCM 2012 site , without any customization, serial numbers, domain etc. on another SCCM 2012 site. I have to do the same tasks of preparing windows 8.1 bare metal for
6 companyes and It would save some time if I can create reference image only once .
    Thank you for the answer.
    Ziga

    Thank you for the answer,
However I just tested my reference image that was created with config manager on site A (no MDT used) and deployed it to site B
I had no problems with the client and there is no information from site A in the registry or anywhere else, the client installed is also correct version that is used on site B and is newer than the client on site A (where i captured the reference image). FEP
deployed normaly and machine was domain joined with no problems.
Yep, only in one case it could go wrong, if for some incredible reason in site B the ccmsetup couldn´t be updated during first OSPhase start. Otherwise, because of that I wouldn´t bother to start building stand-alone MDT only because of that.
I never tested this, but if you want to get rid of ccmsetup from site A, you could mount wim and delete all ccmsetup and ccm folders, also need to mount registry and delete SMS hive.

  • Uninstalled software deployed by SCCM still remains in Installed Applications

    Hi experts
I noticed when we manually uninstalled a software which was deployed via SCCM, in Software Center, under Installed Applications, the software is still listed as installed there.
I know the only way to make the software unlisted under Software Center is to remove the software deployment on the Primary Site Server, refresh the client policy and the software will disappear from the Software Center, but that means it will disappear for
all the other computers which will need the software as well. I don't think this is a workable solution.
Possible to share if the uninstalled software will automatically disappear from the Installed Application to Available Application? If yes, how long would it take, does it depend on the next cycle where the SCCM client get new policies from the Primary Site
    server?
The reason why I am asking this is because it might confuse the end user.
User: I thought you have uninstalled the software!
    IT: Yes we did
User: Then why is it still listed under Installed Application in Software Center. It is bugging me! You didn't do your job.
    Thank you

    Hi,
You could check AppEnforce.log and CIAgent.log to confirm the current state for this application after running the Application Deployment Eval Cycle.
    1. Find the ScopeID of the application in AppEnforce.log.
    2. According to the ScopeID, check the current state for this application.

  • OSD failing to install applications on one DP

I have one deployment point that seems to fail 5/10 applications from installing during the MDT task sequence. All my other 13 DP's do not. The weird thing is that the content is on the DP. When you log into the system, and open up Software Center, the applications
    can be installed manually.
I can't figure out what is going on. What log files should I check?

AFAIK, It seems the issue is fixed in SCCM 2012 R2.
CU 4 for SCCM 2012 SP1 is already available.

  • SCCM 2012 R2 OSD Win7, a Reference Image or Install.wim from the Win 7 media

I want to use thin image to deploy win7.
So do I need to built a reference Image, or I can use install.wim from Windows 7 media directly?
I saw someone suggest built a reference Image fist. so what different between  builting a reference Image or using install.wim from Win7 media?

    Hi,
When you build your won reference image you can include your own software and Software Updates which makes it a lot faster to deploy. I normally add:
    - Windows 7 hotfixes that are not delivered through WSUS/Microsoft Update
    - Visual Studio Runtimes 2005,2008,2010,2012
    - .NET framework 4.5
    - And all the latest software updates from Microsoft.
So I recommend that you create your own image.
    Regards,

Also it's best practice to build and capture using a VM rather than physical.

Two workarounds below (Not acceptable solutions)
*I can add a pause script after Setup Windows and ConfigMgr sequence, wait 5-10 minutes and the applications will install. I assume this is because the CM client has time to fully provision.
    * I can add the anon ‘IUSR’ account to the local administrators group on the DP and all applications install (without the pause script mentioned above). I can reproduce the issue repeatedly by removing and adding the anon account.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated…
Also, I come from a CM 2007 background and somewhat new to CM 2012. Should WebDAV and/or URL Authorization be installed and configured on the DP? According to MS tech support “No”. However, I’ve seen several SCCM 2012 guides on the web that say it should
    be installed.

    David K. Harrison

Locationservices.log, CIDownloader.log, CIagent.log, DataTransferService.log also need to be checked. We need to find out what credential the Client trys to use when it downloads content from DP.

  • Win 8.1 Metro apps re-installing after being removed from the reference image

    Scenario:
MDT 2013 - Build reference image for Win 8.1 on hyper-v executing the following commands removing all metro apps.
    Powershell.exe -Command "&{Get-appxPackage -AllUsers | Remove-AppxPackage -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue}"Powershell.exe -Command "&{Get-AppXProvisionedPackage -online | Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -online -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue}"
Install windows updates and perform sysprep and capture wim task
Import Wim into Sccm 2012 r2 and deploy with standard mdt task
    Problem:
After deployment all Metro apps are reinstalled or reinstalling.
Notes:  Setting Copyprofile True is ignored and have tried various methods and it is always ignored.
If I use the wim from sources\install.wim and I either dism /remove-appx... or powershell in win PE get-appx -path | Remove-appx...
If that wim is modified and used then it deploys without the Metro apps but it doesnt have any windows updates.  If I use that wim to build the reference image it will have no metro apps but after capture and deploy through sccm the metro apps start
    to re-install.

Yes as I've removed it both via get-appxpackages | Remove-appxpackages and via the dism commands.
I have found also that wasn't getting a good sysprep.  Problems with copy profile lead me to try doing a manual sysprep where I found I was getting failures in my sysprep. The problem was that I was disabling the windows store service in my reference
    image.
I was very hopeful that was going to be the resolution but it appears that is not the case.

  • Client failing to install Applications in OSD

This is the first OSD in SCCM 2012 R2 that I am testing and I cannot get any application (not package) deployed finding several different errors (see below).  Also I am confused as to whether the client is properly registering on the server
(and if this is the cause of my problems)
The SMSTS log is showing the following errors during SMS client install:
Unable to read SMS client cert from environment. Not restoring SMS client cert.
Active request handle is empty, registering with new active request handle. This is expected if the TS was started from a media/PXE.
Failed to create instance for IMTCTokenHandler interface, hr=0x80070005
Failed to find property 'AutoApplyDeployment' in 'CCM_ApplicationManagementClientConfig' class defintion. Error 0x80041002. Default value will be used for this property
Error getting system isolation info. Code 8027000C
Remediation failed with error code 8027000C
Then during the application deployment phase I am seeing:
NotifyProgress received: 16 (Application failed to evaluate )
    Policy Evaluation failed, hr=0x80004005
Install application action failed: 'Microsoft Visio Viewer 2013'. Error Code 0x80004005
Install application action cannot continue. ContinueOnErrorFlag is set to false.
The SMS client is installed at the end of the failed task sequence but seems to have a few things not available.
Can I get any guidance on how to isolate what might be the cause of this?
    Thanks, Stephen

Is this the same behavior you're experiencing?:
    http://www.vansurksum.com/configmgr-2012-caveat-with-application-revisions-when-used-in-a-task-sequence/
This issue should have been fixed with R2 so the version of ConfigMgr being used would be good to know.
Also upload smsts.log (or even better all ConfigMgr logs) to OneDrive, because just providing single lines are meaninless (they are taken out of context). Thanks

  • Captured images missing installed applications

    Greetings,
I am using MDT 2013 to capture an image of a reference computer that has Windows 8.1 installed, along with several additional applications.  When I deploy the captured image with a new task sequence set up for that purpose, the applications are
missing.  This is not a matter of the shortcuts being gone; they do not exist in the their respective Program Files folders either, and do not appear in the Programs and Features list.
I have verified that I'm using the captured image, and captured the reference image again (from a Hyper-V VM) just to be sure.  My understanding was that sysprep & capture did not remove applications, just data that's unique to users and the machine.
Thank you in advance for any help.

Problem solved.  After updating the deployment share, I had forgotten to replace the boot image within WDS.

I did some googling and found alot of topics from you on this issue, to me it simply seems like on of the connectors is broken or loose.

  • MDT 2013 UDI install Application list SCCM 2012 R2

    Hello,
did anyone have an idea how i can add all my application from sccm to the mdt udi install application list ?
I don´t want to add every single application.

If you haven't found your answer yet, here is a great video that will show you how to do exactly what you are asking about, among other things.

  • Creative Cloud: "Build" MSI Hangs During SCCM OSD Task Sequence Installation

I wanted to share problem and solution I found when deploying Creative Cloud Packager-created packages/application using SCCM 2012 R2.  I encountered this problem packaging this as both a Package and as an Application in SCCM.
When installing the software through SCCM Software Center onto a client, Software Center would close right as the installation of the "Build" folder MSI completed.  This is abnormal behavior.
When installing the application as part of an OSD Task Sequence, the software would get installed (as shown by logs) but SCCM would hang forever at the "Installing Application" step.
I tried all sorts of different settings in SCCM and with the MSIEXEC command line and eventually traced it to the Reboot Manager functionality in MSIEXEC that will close and attempt to restart processes using files that the installer needs. Reboot Manager clobbered part of SCCM and in the Task Sequence, the connection between SCCM and the installer was broken.
The solution is to pass the property "MSIRESTARTMANAGERCONTROL=Disable" along the command line when calling MSIEXEC on the Build folder MSI file.  This setting disabled Restart Manager so it didn't mess up SCCM.  Once I did this, my Software Center installs and OSD Task Sequences ran as intended.
For reference, I used the REBOOT=ReallySuppress property for reboots and let SCCM determine what to do with reboots based on the return code.  My testing was done with Windows 8.1 Enterprise x64.

Like said, did you configure my proposal: "Configuration Manager client will force a mandatory device
restart" ? After you've configured that, update your deployment type manually and remove the old revisions of the application and try running the TS again. I'm guessing you're a little bit too fast on your doings so the ConfigMgr doesn't play a long very
    nicely...
The TS stops because of your Hard Reboot (exit code 1641), I've seen this before and I configured my application so that ConfigMgr client will force device restart and that fixed my problem. Although, also my application is the last one in the TS, but still,
the TS continues after the reboot.
Btw. have you tried changing your command line to:
    msiexec.exe /i cd-ord.msi TRANSFORMS=sv-se.mst MVLICENSE_KEY=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx /L*V "%temp%\cdord.log" /qn
    /norestart
