Sceneline thumbnail clips are black

I set each of my clips to fade in (and out). The problem is, the thumnail image appears on the sceneline as a black box. I thought maybe the "posterframe" thing would work but it doesn't for thumbnail images in the sceneline.
I understand why this is happening. The image for the clip that is displayed in the sceneline is the first frame of the the clip. In my case this is an all black frame that is a fade in. I'd like to keep the fade in because it makes the video appear smoother.
Is there any way to get an image back (not a black square) for the clips in the sceneline when each of the clips is set to fade in? Can I choose another frame from the clip to use an a "poster frame" or "thumbnail" image for the clips on my sceneline?

Peru Bob is correct. The Timeline shows a lot more info, and I find it far easier to work with.
Now, if you really like Sceneline, wait until the last step, before additing your Dip to Black Transitions. I do not believe that there is a setting to do the equivilent of a "Poster Frame," in Sceneline. As you have found out, Poster Frame is used to show the Clip in your Scene Seleciton Menu.

After update to 10.2 (all 50p) clips are black..:(

I just opened a 2013 fcpx project to find a lot of the red sections in the timeline
as seen in the image. that is just horrible.
the clips are still in the browser and look like this in the browser:
as you can see, not all clips are affected. having a closer look, it seems that 25p clips are
still there and fine, and the affected ones are the ones filmed in 50p.
All clips were filmed with the Panasonic GH3, as said, the affected ones in 1080p50,
all h264 and usually fcpx just works great using GH3 footage.
The quick fix in this panic situation was to transcode to pro res, but this almost blew up my ssd...:(
Any idea or help how to fix this? i also still have a documentary film project with tons of 50p
material which i can t transcode entirely just to skim through...
Please help, I hope there s a fix for this problem

I allready reported the situation to apple.
the support doc (which doesn t apply because the files are not avchd but mov and it s no mac pro)
sounds more than frustrating. basically they say that one should not record in 50p, and downgrade
to the older fcpx..
hope that they ll fix it soon. can t really get how they push out such a big update without checking
some really common file formats with it. I guess the NAB brought them in a hurry.
For proffesional use, like in this job i have to finish now, it s a dissapointment.

IMovie HD - Clips are black but audio works

We're using iMovie HD on MBP with OSX 10.6.8 to edit HD footage. The project was started on another computer using the same version of iMovie (5.0.2). On the new computer, all clips show up as black, but the audio works. The footage is full HD in .mov format at 29.97fps. The clips play fine in Quicktime, but the video doesn't show up in iMovie!
We tried importing a new .mov into the project, and the same thing happened - we hear audio but the picture is black. This clip also plays fine in QT.
Is there a codec or driver that needs to be installed to get the video working? Has anyone else encountered this issue?

I had this problem on my Hitachi 51" HDTV RP and HD DVR box....I went from the HDMI out to the DVI in and would lose video but not audio. Then I went to component input and all was well then it happened again. I finally figured out that since the upgrade to 1.5 IMG (new guide) I did a box reset from the Verizon internet site and have not had the problem since.
Set up your verizon account then go in "Fios Tv services" and check off your boxes and hit "reset box" and your problem should be solved. Like I said since the reset 3 weeks ago I have not had a problem. Remember, simply unplugging it then plugging it back in will not work....reset it from online.
Btw, some settings may be lost (parental controls,etc).....

When I export in FCPX to dvd some clips are blacked out but the audio is ok. What can I do.

In the organizer, the thumbnails are black

The thumbnails for video clips are all black, only showing a clip symbol. JPEGs show fine.

I just started the Adobe Classroom in a Book for Premiere Elements 10 on a Windows 7 64bit platform and have the same issues with video thumbnails that are on the DVD that came with the book, which are also MP4s. I agree with maribob in that this really limits the Organizer's use, especially trying to use Adobe's own book for instruction. Amazing!

I keep importing all these video files which are mp4 format and they have thumbnail pics but when i hover over them to preview they turn black and i cant see any thing!?

It is possible that the clips are are variant of h.264 that iMovie cannot read.
I would suggest that you get a free tool called MPEG Streamclip from squared 5 dot com.
Drag one of your clips into MPeG Streamclip. The File/Export Using QuickTime. Choose either the Apple Intermediate codec or the h.264 codec. H.264 will give you a smaller file. Apple Intermediate Codec will give you a larger file but smoother editing performance.
In iMovie, use File/Import Movie to import this new clip.
If that works, then MPEG Streamclip has a batch mode where you can do all the clips at once.

Updated to Mavericks, aperture 2.1.4 crashing and thumbnails are black

HELP! Just updated to mavericks and now my aperture 2.1.4 is playing up. It is either crashing all the time or sometimes when I am trying to edit I click on the thumbnail and a black picture comes up instead. Can see the image in the browser but in the viewer it is black! When I try to export the image as a JPEG it is a black JPEG. Should I just update to the latest Aperture? Will this solve the problem or are there problems with my library???

Once you have the the external drive, check the formatting of the drive in Disk Utility. It needs to be formatted MacOS X Extended (Journaled). If it is not formatted correctly, reformat it, see: Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture
Then drag your Aperture library to that drive, and also keep a copy of Aperture 2 on that drive, just in case.

Craete a new Aperture library, when you launch Aperture for testing, to see if Aperture is working well, but do not delete the original library immediately. If Aperture 3 is working well for, you will want to test, if your original library can be repaired and upgraded, and you should not try that on your only backup.

Video Thumbnails are Black Using Bing?

This might not be the best place to ask, but does anyone know why all of the video thumbnails are black when I search in Bing? When I hover over them, the preview starts, but other than that I can't see anything. How do I fix this?

Are you trying to view Silverlight or WMV content? If so, you need the appropriate internet plugin: Silverlight or something called "Flip4Mac."

Iphone photo thumbnails fine... photos are black

OKay so i have an iphone 4. i did not back up my phone. i updated my phone just now. when i go to my photos on my phone the thumbnail images are fine. When i click on the thumbnail the images are black. All except the videos I have taken. So I tried to sync my phone under the photos tab in itunes with the photos unchecked nothing happend. I then manually went into my phone on my computer and tried to access the photos there and the images are also corrupt there. Are my images gone forever?!

Event window clips go black when add keyword

Any one had this problem? Know a solution?
I have an event with about 500 clips. I added a keyword to half the clips (click first clip then shift-click the last in the range). Took a while but no problem.
Then I added a keyword to the second half of the clips (about 250 clips). Took a while again. But now, about 80% of the clip thumbnails are black. The video will play in the viewer. And the thumbnail appears if I scrub over the black clips.
I had to remove the keywords and the thumbnails came back to normal.

Sounds like a bug. If you can reproduce it, open a bug report with Apple. I've never done this, so I have not seen it.

I have MTS files imported from a Canon HD cam. They import into I movie and I see them in the Finder folders and they preview fine. I have a new project and some of the clips are freezing and some audio is now gone? Do i need a file converter and convert

I have MTS video files that import from a Canon Vixia HF S20 HD camera. I imported into I Movie. They converted into MOV files and I see them in the movies folder in finder. They view fine and run through the events folder in Finder. In I Movie, I created a new project and used a "Theme". The project worked fine at first but then some clips started to freeze and some lost audio. The effected clips are the same in the project library and in the event library, meaning they are froze in both places. As I said when i view through finder the MOV files preview and work fine. Is this inherent to MTS files using in I movie. SHould i consider using a file converter to convert to MOV files prior to importing into I movie.
I found on Apple support site info that states the MTS files can only be imported through the camera. I am developing my back up procedures and now I am faced with backing up in the original MTS files but not being able to reload if necessary into I movie. Any suggestions?

I'd like to add that after I import these clips without thumbnails, iMovie does give me an error and say that they could not be imported. No explanation as to why, though. Again, they play fine on my camera.

Timeline Saying Clips are Offline, when Browser Shows Clips to be OK

I have a few clips in my timeline that fews the OFFLINE WINDOW. Yet when I check my browser, the clips have no offline slash and can be seen as edited in the canvas. How do I make the clips show normally on the timeline. Also clips are trying to show the actual clip photo, bu only show half. And yes I have tried reconnecting the media, does not work.

Trash your thumbnail cache file... it's location is set in the Scratch Disk Settings near the bottom of the window if you don't know where you've put them... just trash them and the offline media thumbnails will go away. It's caused by opening a project file without the media online, then saving it. The thumbnails don't get rewritten with the proper pictures when you do that.

Merged clips - are they all bugs or is there something wrong with my system?

I have to use merged clips to sync video and audio because making every clip a sequence is too cumbersome and doesn't give me thumbnails to help choose my shots. Apparently, merged clips are very buggy. I can't use colored markers because they don't get saved on merged clips. I can't use match frame on merged clips because they don't find the correct frame. I can't set a poster frame on a merged clip except with the "in" marker. Are all those problems bugs, or is there something wrong with my specific system. I trashed preferences to fix another problem unrelated to merged clips, but that didn't solve any of the clip problems.

I don't believe there's anything wrong with your system.
