Schedule shutdown stops working after putting the computer to sleep

I had trouble scheduling the computer to shut down after upgrading from Mac OS 10.3.9 to Mac OS 10.4.6. I accidentally left my screen closed on my PowerBook G4 after scheduling it to startup. It startup with the scceen closed and in sleep mode. After that it wouldn't shutdown after scheduling to shutdown.
So I read a Post to trash Library/preference/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Autowake.plist. That worked but now it won't shutdown after being put to sleep even when it is woken.

Yes, just put your computer to sleep whenever you judge it right.
The three nightly maintenance tasks are not important enough to change your habits,
they do not affect OS X performance: only disk space.
And yes, since 10.4.2 they are automatically delayed if your computer was sleeping, but you still have to run them manually
— all three together once a month is fine —
if you sometimes shut down or reboot your computer.
Use this Terminal command
sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
or one of the "cache-cleaners" utilities like Cocktail etc.

  • My iTunes v.10.6.3.25 is intermittently refusing to open. Sometimes re-booting my laptop works, sometimes not. I just put the computer to sleep, and when I woke it up, iTunes started automatically. Any thoughts?

My iTunes v.10.6.3.25 is intermittently refusing to open. Sometimes re-booting my laptop works, sometimes not. I just put the computer to sleep, and when I woke it up, iTunes started automatically (I had been trying to open it just before by clicking on a song file in my Documents window, and that's the song that started playing when the pc woke up). I went to my iTunes Help and clicked Updates/download iTunes 10.7 twice, but got nothing. Now, Im wondering if I should downloacd the entire 10.7, or whether that would overwrite all my files, erasing my songs. Anybody know? Thanks.

    Hey thanks for replying.
    Here's what I did:
First I tried the Winsock reset in the Command prompt. Nothing changed.
Next, I tried the instructions on http://http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4123. The only other program that came up on the 'Winsock Providers' tab on the program was 2 Windows Live applications, which I can do without. So I deleted all Windows Live Applications.
I did the Winsock reset in the Command Prompt again and rebooted my comp.
Unfortunately, nothing has changed. iTunes keeps freezing at various stages of the sync, then shows the candy cane-striped bar with either the words 'Finishing sync' or 'Cancelling sync', before showing the Apple logo.
Sometimes, iTunes gets to the syncing stage - "Copying # of ####" - where it will trudge through the first, second and third tracks before flashing "Copying 4 of ####" for a split second and I catch "Cancelling sync" briefly before the Apple logo appears.
Again, I've repeated the steps I mentioned in my previous post. Does ANYONE know when the new version of iTunes is set to be released?! This one is driving me INSANE, to say the least!!

  • Regarding putting the computer to sleep.

Hey everyone. This is only my second question on Discussions, and I really apologize if the answer to this is dead obvious, but I'm having a minor issue...
I was under the impression that the use of Time Machine would allow you to simply plug in your external, and let Time Machine basically take care of the rest. I haven't actually had a problem there. It works great on backing everything up, but what I'm not sure of, is if I'm using the application properly AFTER it finishes with it's backups. I'm on a new 21.5" iMac, and I'm using a SimpleTech S320U 320gb External Hard Drive. Now, I rarely, RARELY, ever shut my Mac down. Rather, I often put it to sleep. However, if I leave the external plugged into the computer, and put the computer to sleep, once I wake it back up I receive the message that my storage device was not unplugged properly.
This has lead me to manually ejecting my external every time I want to put my iMac to sleep, and I was just wondering if this is normal procedure. Again, apologies if the answer is completely obvious... thanks for any help in advance.

Generally it is not a good idea to leave external drives plugged in when putting the PowerBook to sleep as they can prevent the PB from either going into or waking from sleep properly. Personally I think USB devices also have a greater tendency to be problematic than a FireWire equivalent.
I haven't had such problems, but then I always unmount external drives if they are not being used.

  • Creating keyboard shortcut to put the computer to sleep

I am trying to find out the command to run to put the computer to sleep in the same way as when I press System-->Shutdown-->Suspend in my MATE desktop.
I can send the computer to sleep using systemctl suspend and resume with no problems.
However the behavior is slightly different than pressing the "Suspend" button in that the screen is not locked when I awake the computer from sleep.
What should I write to lock the screen and put the computer to sleep, so that I am asked the password when I resume it?
Thanks a lot in advance for the help,
    Cheers,
    Luca

Thanks monodromy and allonsy for the answers.
Finally I discovered that the way you lock the screen in MATE is with the command:
    mate-screensaver-command -l
I'll try to create a service "lockscreen" as proposed by jason and will post the solution to close the topic!
    Thanks for the help guys!

  • "Allow power button to put the computer to sleep" setting is not available but button does it anyway

This has never happened before. Computer stayed at gray screen with no progress wheel so I held the power button to shut it down. Since startup afterwards the power button sleeps the computer. There's no "allow power button to put the computer to sleep" choice available in Energy Saver but button does it anyway. Is there a defaults command that will fix it? Something else?

I've had Mavericks for a week and a half. I don't believe yesterday could have been the first time I used the power button in an attempt to get the Restart Sleep Cancel Shut Down box, but I've been around long enough to know that memory will fool you.

  • How Put the computer to sleep with a "F key?

    Hi,
How do you Put the computer to sleep with a "F key?
I do remember seeing a version of osX where there was a (say) "F2" key next to the Apple>Sleep pull down menu.
with 10.2.8 or 10.3.9 is there a way to set up a "F" key instead of using the pull down menu?
I looked into the system preferences> keyboard & mouse but no luck. The sys Pref> keyboard & mouse is different on 10.2.8 that on 10.3.9.
An neither one has an option to use an F key to put to sleep.
    help!
    Michel

Not an F key command, but here's a keyboard command.

  • HT1449 I moved my itunes library to the time capsule. Everytime I put the computer to sleep, I have to change the location back to the time capsule. I cannot get the iTunes library to stay located in the time capsule.

My itunes library does not stay in its new location in the time capsule. Every time I put the computer to sleep or leave it alone for awhile, the itunes location goes back to the original location in the macbook. Then I have to change the location back to the time capsule and wait for it to reorganize all the files again. So the question is how to keep my itunes in its new location the time capsule?

    Welcome to the discussion area!
+Can someone please provide a definite answer, or at least warn against using the TC as a shared media device on a network. The whole point of getting such a device is to be able to offload large multimedia libraries from the laptops, yet access a shared library when networked. N'est ce pas?+
We're all users here...not pros...so you'll get few definitive answers on a forum with varying opinions about almost every subject.
My opinion would be this: Apple designed the Time Capsule for Time Machine to automatically backup all the files on your Mac and other Macs in the household on a regular basis and provide a way to retrieve a file that had been deleted recently by mistake. It's a pretty good router as well.
If you check the info about the Time Capsule on Apple's site, the main features mentioned are backup of your Macs and a dual band wireless network capability.
The Time Capsule was never designed to be a media server housing audio, video and other multi-media files and has never been promoted as such. Nevertheless, some users seem to have adopted the stance that this should be one of the benefits of the device, if not a main feature.
There may be a need for media server type device, but the Time Capsule, at least at this time, is not the answer. If you feel otherwise, you might want to speak directly to Apple and let them know via Time Capsule Feedback.

  • Why does the sound to my MacBook Air stop working after it wakes up from sleeping?

When I leave my headphones in the headphone jack and then close the computer to sleep, when it wakes back up the sound will not work.
It doesn't work with the headphones in or out, it is just completely disabled. I tried muting and unmuting and and toggling the volume but the only thing that works is restarting the computer.
Obviously, the sound works after restart but it is an inconvenience due to the tone on restart which is not the greatest noise when trying to work with a sleeping baby in the house (Which is why I use headphones in the first place.)
    Any help is much appreciated.

Plug in the headphone and remove it
    1. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    2. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

Remove the logitech mouse receiver if you have one.
Update Boom, Windows Media Player and all other third party plug-ins.

  • Can't put the computer into sleep if VPN is connected

I think I have found a win7 bug. The problem is that I can't put my computer into sleep if VPN is connected. The VPN client I used is Microsoft VPN client. The VPN works fine.  But if I click sleep button with VPN connected, the computer screen turns
black, the fan speeds up, and the signal light tells me the computer is  still on, not in sleep mode. When I try to wake up my computer by tapping the enter key, space, or moving the mouse, it just doesn't work at all: the fan speeds faster and faster
and the computer heats up. The only thing I can do now to save my computer from darkness is to hit and hold the power button, powering off the computer. The sleep function works just fine if the VPN is disconnected. I can easily wake my computer up by tapping
the enter key. I don't know whether this problem is only present on my computer or universally present on all win7 computers.
The following is my system info:
OS Name Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate
    Version 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601
    OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
    System Manufacturer LENOVO
    System Model IdeaPad Y460
    System Type X86-based PC
    Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU       M 460  @ 2.53GHz, 2534 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)

    Hi,
Please collect the report for the further troubleshooting. Note:Please do the following steps when VPN is connected.
    1. Click Start, type in “cmd”, right click it and choose “Run as administrator”.
    2. Type in the following command.
    Powercfg –energy
    3. Find the report file in the location showed in Command window.
    4.

  • TS2771 My ipod touch stop working after putting it on sleep mode and was on dead battery. How do I start it up again?

I was looking at some of my pictures on my Ipod Touch. It was on 20 percent battery and i turned it on to sleep mode to go do something for my mom. Once i came back and tried to unlock my ipod it would even turn on. I tried plugging it in to the computer and used many different ipod chargers. How do i get this to work? its only a year old, does it have anything to do with the battery? And if i reset it will the songs i purchased from my ipod still be on there?

    Try here:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
The media should still be on the iPod. You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • What might my problem be if my display will not come on after waking the computer from sleep or powering it on?

When I try to wake the MBP from sleep (opening the lid, pressing spacebar, or pressing power button), the computer display doesn't come on.  The light on the front shows it is awake but there is no display or backlight though the caps lock lights up.  I have tried an SMC and PRAM reset to no avail.  I tried to start up in safe mode but now as soon as the screen comes up to select the user the display goes out and I don't know how to get it to stop trying to boot up in safe mode.  Any suggestions as to what the problem might be and some possible solutions?

  • Photoshop stops working after pc comes out of 'sleep mode'

    Hello,
Photoshop stops working lately, when I start my pc out of 'sleep mode', I get the warning box 'Photoshop CC doesn't work anymore'.
Is this a known problem, can I do something about that? Thanks in advance!
    These are my pc specs:
    -Windows 7, Processor: Intel(R) Core (TM) i7-3770 CPU 3,40 GHz, RAM= 8 GB, 64 bit system.
-graphic card: amd radeon hd 7700 series
    With regards,
    Marcel

It's not "green" but I suggest never using "sleep" type operations.  Windows and its drivers have never been good at making the transitions into/out of such modes, and probably never will be.
Just leave it running or save all your work and fully shut it down.  Allowing the display to power down may be okay as a compromise, but even that could be problematic.
