Schedule Shutdown that Cannot be Canceled?

Would like to schedule a shutdown that cannot be canceled (except by Admin user obviously). So I can force my teenager off the computer at bedtime! Normal scheduled shutdown can be canceled by anyone.
Would be happy to pay for a 3rd party utility that permits this if needed.

One idea: if your teen connects through a router, you often can configure the router to allow Internet access only at certain times.
Or, set up a separate, non-Admin user account for your teen's use.

Open Parental Controls preferences
Click the lock icon to unlock it, and then enter an administrator name and password.

Hi , im new around java and i need a program that keeps on repeating after each each input/uses(generally meant for different user) and cannot either stop using "Cancel" or "x" while stopping only using the "stop" button

Yes it is. He asked how to do it using some Swing trickery, and I said it won't work. Which is true. The OP didn't already know that, clearly, hence the question. Now he does. That's pretty much new information if you ask me.

What value can I add in light of that information? I began by answering a question that was not stated to be about kiosks. Scheduled shutdown no longer works in Keynote 4.0 iLife 08

Those of us using Keynote, a large LED monitor and a Mac Mini as a Digital signage system have found that the new Keynote 4.0 in iLife 08 will not allow a scheduled shutdown. This worked well under the old version.
We had been on iLife 06 and 10.4.9. We found that Keynote crashes every few days when you try and run a show 24/7 so we had used the energy saver settings to have it shut down at 1AM and restart at 2AM. This was working well, the only trick was to always name the current slide show the same thing and have Keynote auto launch at startup and run the slideshow.
Last week we reimaged a Mini with 10.4.10 and iLife 08 and put in place of the 10.4.9 ilife 06 mini, the first time it was suppose to shutdown it hung, there was an error on the screen that said "Keynote had canceled shutdown".
Testing proved the following:
Schedule shutdown does not work at all when a Keynote presentation is running. You get this error.
"The application Keynote canceled shutdown. To try again quit Keynote and choose shut down from the Apple menu"
It will auto shutdown and startup IF a Keynote slide show is NOT running.
It will do a scheduled shutdown if just the Keynote App is running.
If the Keynote app is running a normal shutdown command will work.
Does anyone know a work around or a fix?

The thread "Keynote Cancelled Shutdown: how do I troubleshoot?" has recently posted a possible solution but is there an explanation or a fix planned?

I have a problem with an order that didn't cancel all the way...

Order {removed per forum guidelines}, I ordered Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 and Sin and Punishment: Star Successor but a little bit after placing the order I decided I wanted to cancel it. I canceled the order and Devil Survivor 2 got canceled, but now Star Successor has shipped even though I requested the cancellation before it shipped out. I needed to have both of them canceled and also, I used a $5 rewards certificate on the order that got split between the two games and is now taking only $.61 off of the order, which means I'm being shipped a game I no longer want AND it looks like I'm going to lose my $5 rewards certificate is there ANY way to have the game re-routed back before it gets to me so the order can be canceled? I would've rather kept my order complete with both games than to only get one of them, that way at least my rewards certificate wouldn't have been wasted...

"The file is damaged or is a format that cannot be included in the Organizer"

I have been "repairing" or "restoring" an old photo using PSE 3.0. I scanned the photo to get it into my computer. I began by making 2 copies of the image in case I goofed and needed to start anew. I began "cleaning and cloning" [my terminology, not Adobe's] on a part time schedule. At the end of each sitting, I would close PSE and save the work back to the original file in "My Pictures". [I expect to get chided on this, so fire away.] After I had moved the image into and out of PSE a few times, I was presented with the phrase: "The file is damaged or is a format that cannot be included in the organizer." PSE will not re-open the image now. The Properties show the file to be "Adobe Photoshop Elements Image" and the file name ends with .PSD . I cannot remember precisely what steps I took to close PSE and save the results the last time I worked on the image. I have "restored" or "repaired" about a dozen other old images thus far with satisfactory results [ I may look back and marvel at the naivete of that statement later] and this never happened before. Is this image forever barred from being imported back to PSE for further work? Should I begin the project from scratch with one of the spare copies? I have been using "Adobe PSE 3.0 Classroom in a Book", and "The Missing Manual" [Barbara Brundage] as my guides. Do I need to use the Photo Organizer exclusively to store my "works in progress"? I am using Windows XP Home.

As long as you have a backup (as you do) and are not repeatedly saving as jpg which will progressively degrade the file there is nothing wrong with this procedure. (You should save as psd or tif.)
I don't know what happened to corrupt the file but you may be able to save your work. Download the free Irfanview from here:

Try to open the corrupted psd. If successful save it to another name as psd and again as tif. Then see if either or both can be opened in PE3.

No. I never include some projects in Organizer unless I want to be able to find them easily later based on multiple criteria.

P6V7 Activities that cannot be levelled

Hi All,
I have a problem with leveling.
in the log some activities are listed as "activities that cannot be leveled", looking better at those activities it results that they have negative float (even if no successor and predecessor has been set). No "must finish on" has been set for the project and strange thing is that when scheduling without leveling the resources the float become positive as expected. Every time I level resources (unchecking the option "preserve early and late dates") the late finish is recalculate and it is minor respect to early finish dates. Another strange thing is that the recalculate late finish dates fall before the date of project start...
Is there some workaround I can test or some settings to be checked?

I'm not an expert at leveling resources, but I'd guess your resource assignment on those activities that don't level is at 100%, meaning you need the full attention of 1 resource the whole time that activity is active. If you reduce the resource availability in the dictionary to 60%, the activity still says, "Hey, given my duration and number of units, I need 100% of the resource." Thus, even if there were no other activities with that resource assigned, you'd be overallocated when these activities are scheduled to occur, and P6 can't level that resource/activity.
To experiment with this hypothesis, increase your duration on the activity (or decrease the number of units or the units per time... depending on your "duration type" setting) so that the resource requirements are at 60% (or whatever you're setting your max to) and try to level again.

Call cannot be canceled on iPhone

Using latest verson of Skype on iPhone 4 with most up to date iOS, the call cannot be cancelled when conversation ends. No red button comes up and if you try to close the app then it runs in the background. It is really painful as the only solution appears to be recall the same number a second time and cancel it. This seems to cancel both calls. Crazy but true.
I assume the latest developments work on iPhone 6 but somehow leaving other plder phones behind is the way forward???
Any ideas?

I am having similar issue but on a large scale. I have only a few printers that drop off while others stay. I notice this on my iOS devices, but if I check my macbook they all still display, so only on iOS devices it is disappearing.

Mavericks Scheduled Shutdown not working

Since upgrading to Mavericks 10.9.2 , about 2 weeks ago, (from Snow Leopard 10.6.8) unable to get Energy Saver / "Scheduled Shutdown" working.
Scheduled Startup works without any problems, everyday at selected time, my iMac boots up; but when I have a time set for "shutdown" it just goes to sleep. Never had this problem with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 - always worked on schedule everyday. Tried not selecting both Startup and Shutdown, and doing it manually; but whenever I go back to set the Startup and Shutdown, it never works in Shutdown. Any help on how to solve this, would be appreciated.

I think I spoke too soon, about Scheduled Shutdown working OK. It does not work when Mac is in "Sleep Mode"...I tried it again this morning, set a schedule time for shutdown, 10 minutes out from present time.
Did not allow screen or computer to go into sleep mode, and guess what ? Up pops the scheduled shutdown screen, saying this computer will shut down in 10 minutes. OK that worked. I then changed the shutdown schedule again, for a later time, now I allowed the Display and Computer to go into Sleep mode, per settings I have in System Preferences/Energy Saver -> "Display Sleeps in 10 Minutes - Computer sleep in 15 minutes. I returned 40 minutes later, -- Computer and Display are in Sleep mode, return key to bring screen back up,---- and Scheduled Shutdown was not activated. Have no background programs running that causing errors in Console. Therefore there is a software flaw somewhere, that will not allow "Schedule Sutdown" to activate when computer is in sleep mode. Any suggestions on how to correct this would be appreciated.

Scheduled shutdowns issue

Under Yosemite, automatic shut downs scheduled in the Energy Saver System Preference no longer work when the Mac is at the login screen.
According to the following support document, this appears to be a 'feature' rather than a bug:

In all prior versions of the Mac OS through Mavericks, scheduled shut downs are honored whether or not any user is logged in.
This new restriction in Yosemite is problematic: at my offices there are many shared desktop Macs (iMacs and Mac minis) with scheduled start ups and shut downs. When no one is actively using the stations, they are (or should be) at the login screen.
Asking people to remain logged in when done with these stations, so that the scheduled shutdowns would work, would have unwelcome consequences, such as: open applications preventing shut down, and other users not able to log in during the day because they could not unlock the screen saver for the previous still-logged-in user.
The scheduled start ups (if I've manually shut down the Mac) still work as expected. But these scheduled shut downs not being honored when no one is logged in is a big issue, which will probably prevent me from upgrading shared Macs beyond Mavericks because I don't want them to remain on 24/7/365. I have already submitted feedback to Apple on this issue.
Has anyone found a way to get scheduled shutdowns to work under Yosemite when no user is logged in?

Does cron still work? It's brutal but you could setup a shell script to be triggered from cron (or use shutdown directly).

If that was in roots crontab it should stop them at 8pm, this is untested, I'm away from 10.10 at the moment. You may need to ensure the machine is awake, I think cron will not wake the OS for jobs.
launchd may be another option, but I'm still unsure if the OS wakes to run scheduled jobs.
Ideally you would clean up any unsaved work & logout active users, or bail out if there is an active login, hence the shell script to handle some logic.

Resource Levelling... Activities that cannot be leveled

I've created a resourced schedule for design management. The schedule seems to be fine when resource leveling when the "Defult Units / Time" is set to 100% and the "Max Units / Time" is set to 100%
I'm trying to reduce the available time for 2 of the resources from 100% to 60%.
When I resource level after changing the Units/Time percentages for these resources the Resource Usage Profile continually shows a over allocation. Change if back and is OK again.
When I review the resource level log it says that there are a number of "Activities that cannot be leveled".
When I check the tasks it seems they do not level.
These tasks all level when the Unit/Time is 100% or greater.
Does anyone know why these are not leveling??

Scheduled shutdown when another user is logged in

I like my Mac to shut itself down each evening at 9pm and then switch on at 8.30am - which is easy to set within Energy Saver.
However, if I have another user account open (which I often has), the computer will not shutdown unless an Administer's name and password is entered. This means that I have to be there to do this - which negates the reason for having a scheduled shutdown.
I know that no data will be lost if the other account is closed down, so is there any way around this?

Not that I am aware of. Data could be lost if someone is in the middle of work and the Mac shuts down without giving the user and opportunity to save the work.
Why do you want to do this? Why not just leave the Mac on all the time? Are you trying to force your kids off the Mac at a predetermined time?

Scheduling shutdown

i want to schedule shutdown of database.
i have tried 2 methods-
1st-->
shut.bat
set oracle_sid=anmreco
sqlplus "/ as sysdba"
@"C:\Documents and Settings\hp\Desktop\shut.sql"
shut.sql-->
shutdown immediate;
2nd -->
shut2.bat
set oracle_sid=anmreco
sqlplus "/ as sysdba"
shutdown immediate;
however both the methods only gets me connected to oracle as sysdba. The shutdown immediate does not seem to execute.
Whats the problem?

Hi Anmol,
The Scheduler typically clears out variables before running an executable so you would also have to set ORACLE_HOME and specify the full path to sqlplus.
Also in your job you cannot point to a Windows batch script directly you have to call it like
cmd.exe
/q
/c
script.bat
If you are running on a 10.1 database you should make sure your scripts produce no output to avoid running into a known issue on this release. You should redirect output (e.g. from sqlplus) to a log file. This will also help you diagnose what is going on.

Scheduled shutdown and power settings

I have set up a policy to shut down all domain computers at 1900 every day with Task Scheduler via GPO, but there is still something that I need to configure.
Working hours of the company that I work for, are from 0800 to 1700, but there are still employees that remain after working hours to finish their daily tasks. Many time it happens that the any computer won't be used at all, but they just do not shut it
down.
I would like to set a policy which would apply after 1700 to send the computers to sleep mode after 30 minutes of inactivity and then shut down the computers that have been on sleep mode for more then 15 minutes. So they do not have to wait till 1900 to
shut down.

You can create a scheduled task using group policy preferences to initiate shutdown.

Historic deferred tax-related reconciliations cannot be canceled

I have a problem with a payment that i need to cancel, it sends me a message Historic deferred tax-related reconciliations cannot be canceled [3821-29]. This payment has the docdate feb-2009.
Any ideas?

The account seems fine, it's just that they've been doing reconciliations like this for years and have never needed the Automatic Reconciliation Differences Account defined. Just want to ensure everything is working fine. My concern we more so the remarks that were automatically populated 'Historic deferred tax-related reconciliations cann', as the Canadian localization doesn't deal with deferred tax. I can't explain why it was automatically populated and what is meant by that message.
