Schedule Tasks removed but still running

Morning all,
We are a college of 90+ Mac's but primally PC, we are using Apple Remote Desktop 3.4 (I'm aware that 3.5.1 is available) so I'm self training but have an issue as of yet I have been unable to resolve.
Like a few of you here I have set Schedule task in ARD then removed them but the tasks are still running each night,  I have seen a few posts but no solution,
There is a discussion indicating that the tasks are stored in the 'com.apple.remotedesktop.plist' but I cannot confirm that as the file is not in readable text.
I did find a Tasks Server folder '/Library/Application Support/Apple/Remote Desktop/Tasks Server/' but I'm unable to get to is from finder or the terminal as the permissions are stopping my access.
The tasks being set or a shutdown this was set to happen @ 7:30 PM but the college require the stations to shutdown later @ 10:00 pm and the stations are now shutting down in the middle of a class.
Can any one help
Thanks Simon

Hi,
Yap I turned off all the energy saver options that have been set in workgroup manager also I'm still getting history of the shutdowns done by ARD, but not able to turn off the ARD computer as it is the X Server.
I did find the file "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.RemoteDesktop" but I was unable to read it but I'll give the command above a go.
Thanks For your help
Simon

  • Since installing yosemite my computer/screen blacks out, but still running

Since installing yosemite last week, my computer/screen blacks out, but still running. I have since rebooted everything, started from scratch and utilizing my external drive transferred all files/apps back. Did not help, in fact it is getting worse. Computer screen blacks out every 5 min or so and have to power up again. Also, continue to get Java message updates even after all have been updated over and over again. Any suggestions? Thanks!

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • HT201304 How do you remove an app? In this case, it was viewed, purchased, free in this case,  downloaded, then removed, but still appears in the purchased section, I do not want the younger kids to see it? There appears to be no remove or hide function?

How do you remove a previously downloaded app, that is now removed, but still appears under purchased?

  • Services of 2nd instance disappearded from SQL Server 2012 Configuration Manager but still running

We recently configured multiple SQL Server 2012 R1 (two-node) clusters. Some with two instances. However, we discovered later that the Configuration Manager only lists the services of the 1st instance (the default MSSQLSERVER instance). The other named instance
is still running and can be failed over from one node to the other using Cluster Failover Manager but the services are not showing up in Configuration Manager in any of the two nodes.
Any thoughts as to why we see this odd behavior and how to fix it? We have done two instances before in SQL Server 2008 R2 but never saw this behavior.
    Thanks,
    Omer

Please see my answer above about the SQLCM version. We use the highest.
As I said before that this happens only when we have two instances running in a SQL2012 cluster. We configured 7 SQL 2012 clusters. three of them have two instances but only the services of one instance are displayed in CM. Services of the default instance
are listed in two of these clusters while services of the named instance are listed in the 3rd one.
One thing to note about these configurations is that the installer could not bring the services at the end of installation online because it did not have permission to create the computer objects in AD during setup thus we had to follow a known workaround
that involves having the domain admin fix these permissions and then we were able to add the SQL Agent Service to the cluster and bring the services online after modifying the ConfigurationState key value of each instance in the registry.
The installer account is setup as a local admin and we asked the domain admin to give it "Read All properties" and "create computer objects" in AD but for some reason it does not seem to have the ability to create these computer objects during installation
and the objects are to be pre-created and their permissions reset afterward.
I am giving this information and I am not sure if it has anything to do with the fact that SQLCM is listing the services of one instance and not the other.

  • Battery not availble BUT still running off battery!?!

So yesterday, my MacBook decided to not show up... what? Randomly, out of the blue! It had previously been working just fine, about 80% health, and then, all of a sudden, it stops recognizing that there's a battery installed. Here's the funny part, though... The battery still has a charge (as shown by LEDs on the bottom), and the MacBook still runs off the battery, despite it saying it doesn't have one! Unsurprisingly, the battery doesn't charge either.
The computer will only start up if plugged in, but can subsequently be unplugged to run on the remaining battery power.
It seems the problem here isn't the capacity of the battery, but the communication between the battery and the computer.
I've tried resetting the SMC and cleaning the contacts of the battery, but neither of those had any effects.
Do I have any recourse besides trying/buying a new battery?

I have the same exact problem...totally out of the blue. You definitely don't need a new battery because my problem started couple of days after I purchased a brand new battery.
I think it might be the battery connector to the logic board. In almost all other cases with this problem, when the battery isn't recognized by the mac, then you have two of the following: it doesn't charge AND the computer doesn't run off the battery alone, even if the battery indicates that it still has juice left.
Unless instructed otherwise, I'm going to open up the computer and re-connect and clean the battery connector.
Also, do you have the updated battery software?

  • Battery indicator @ 0%, but still runs

I've had my macbook for about 2-3 years now. I have noticed the battery performance getting worse with time, but lately it has gone way down! after fully charging, the batter will show only about 20-30minutes of time, within about 3 minutes will drop to 90 percent and continue to degrade rapidly. So yesterday I decided to just let the battery die before plugging it in. Once the indicator read 0%, it continued to run (not plugged in) for about 1 hour while playing music and internet surfing and could've gone longer, but I had to leave the house. So I powered it down, and didn't plug it in. When I got back, it was completely dead, and wouldn't turn on without the adapter plugged in. So I plugged in, turned it on, and it still was reading 0% and it started charging. When I unplugged it, it went into sleep mode and wouldn't wake up until plugged back in. Even after it had been charging for 20 minutes, it still wouldn't run without the adapter.
Sorry for being so lengthy, but I hope someone out there can help!

  • Firefox suddenly disappears, but still running

Firefox suddenly disappears from the screen and the icon too, while it is still running. When I try to reopen it, a window pops up to warn that Firefox is still running. I have to close the session from Task Manager (End Process firefox.exe from Processes tab). This happens only on my account. I do not experience this problem on a different account.
    I have XP sp3.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

  • My macbook won't shut down.  Had MacDefender and followed all instructions for removal but still get told can't shut down cause their processes are running.  Any suggestions?

I followed all directions and quit all processes, emptied trash etc.  When I try to shut down I get pop-ups telling me apps are running even though I quit them.  I can't install upgrades because I can't shut down.  Doing a hard reboot doesn't help at all.  Any suggestions?

If any of the apps won't quit on you in future, try ti kill them in Terminal:
    killall Finder
    then hit enter
If you don't know the official app name (how OS SX sees it), go to COMMAND_OPTION_ESCAPE and see the official name in the running app list.
The power button method above works 100%, but will bypass saving of session states for all services, so your OS X could be unstable after reboot and won't remember some settings you had prior to shuting down. Use it only as a last resort.

  • I updated to 6. In Tools, blocked cookies and now can never open Firefox. The allow cookies window is stuck. How do I get rid of the firefox browser and go back to 5. I did have malware on computer that was removed, but still ...not working

On Saturday, Sept. 3, I updated to Mozilla Firefox 6. I went into the Toolbar, I think to private browsing, but not sure now. I asked that all cookies be blocked. A window came up from my home page that said "Allow, Allow this session only, Deny Cookies." I said Deny and it told me 19 cookies were being blocked. I have never been able to get the window to leave the browser home page. In fact, I can not make any choice in that window. The window kind of shakes. I went for professional help and did have malware that I had not known was there that was removed. Technician worked 3 hours. It was called "PUM.Hijack.Start." The Mozilla browser is still stuck like that. I am on Internet Explorer, but I would like to have Firefox back again. What steps do I take next?

I am having a similar problem. Running Xp.
    Latest revision of firefox.
After using firefox for a while if I exit, parent.lock is locked and i have to reboot to reload firefox.
I have killed all firefox applications from task manager (usually there are none). and I have tried 3 different "file unlock" programs including unlocker to no avail.
I also recently installed a program that shows -all- open files, and parent.lock is not listed, and thus not closable/unlockable from there.

  • Apps removed but still showing up in Creative Cloud App. How do I reinstall them?

After installing several apps on my laptop, After Effects, which I use for my business, wouldn't function on my desktop. I didn't know that you had to turn off the creative cloud connection on one computer before going to the other. Since I needed to deliver my projects, I removed the apps on my laptop. Three of them didn't seem to have an uninstall button on them. It didn't show up for some reason for - After Effects, Acrobat XI Pro, and Illustrator. I tried to find all references to them and finally threw every reference to them I could find into the trash. I must have left something in my system still because in the Creative Cloud menu, it shows that I still have those apps on my laptop still and that they are up to date. However, as I said, I threw everything that had to do with those apps that I could find in the trash.
There doesn't seem to be any way to reload these three apps in the Creative Cloud app and since they are no longer in my Applications folder (I'm on a Mac) there is no way to uninstall or do anything else.
How can I clear out the piece of software that thinks these three apps are still installed so that I can reinstall fresh versions? Thanks.

  • How can I re-install Lightroom, removed but still showing in Creative Cloud as being installed.

Well I think I screwed up. Three days ago I purchased the Photography Creative Cloud and downloaded Photoshop, Bridge and Lightroom. This evening I removed Lightroom through Windows un-install. It is still showing as being installed on the computer in the Creative Cloud window. I'm pretty sure I should not have un-installed it this way, but there it is. Is there anyway I can get it back on my computer? I am not ready for it yet but will need it in the future.
    Thanks for any help provided,
    Linda

    Hi Linda,
I think you're OK. The Creative Cloud window only updates daily, and/or with every relaunch. The Creative Cloud application currently has no uninstall utility, so you need to use the Windows control panel to uninstall.
If you want to force an update to the Creative Cloud status, quit and relaunch the process. To quit, go to the gear icon in the upper right and choose quit at the bottom of the menu:
If Lightroom doesn't show up as 'Install' after relaunching, let me know and I can investigate more.
    regards,
    steve

  • Disabled in Startup Items, but still running

    Hi all,
During a recent use of Activity Monitor, I noticed Palm Desktop Background was running and using about 1% CPU.
Not a big deal, but it is disabled it in my account in Startup Items.
I also have disabled Transport Monitor.
I don't use my Palm for a while now, but didn't remove the software (just in case of...).
Moving The Palm software to the trash and restarting stopped the Palm Desktop Background program (as expected).
Putting it back in the Applications folder and restarting, did let it run again.
So, there must be another reason to 'trigger' it, apart from the Startup Items in my account.
I looked in various places, known to me:
    ~/Library/StartupItems
    ~/System/Library/StartupItems
    ~/Users/MyUsername/Library
but couldn't find a relevant item which causes the culprit to run.
Like I said, it's no big deal (1% CPU), but it annoys me enough to write this post.
Does anyone know other places to look for or other mechanisms that cause the described behaviour?
    Any help is appreciated.

    littleshoulders,
    Thanks for for the reply.
I occasionaly run a classic application. For that purpose I have a minimal system 9.2.2 installed, with a few startup items.
I know Palm Desktop can also run in classic mode, but I never used it that way.
And afaik, classic startup items only are activated when classic is running, are they?
I noticed another thing. I use a program called 'KeyCue' (It finds keyboard shortcuts in applications).
It always runs in the background, but I appear to have it disabled in my account in the Startup Items. In the preferences of this app., I have it set to automatically start at login (that's what I want).
Despite disabling in my account, it does run in the backgound.
So, what 'mechanism' is telling OS X to launch the app.
Makes me wonder if Palm Desktop uses a similar 'trick', but I could not find a setting in the preferences of PD.
    Any suggestion?
