Scheduler Move in Redwood Cronacle

We will be moving one of our servers located locally in Glendale, AZ to Ashburn, Virginia in November. This means that we will be moving one of our Redwood schedulers as well, which includes our Oracle Production database and our Production Repository. During the move, we will be upgrading to SP11 for all of our schedulers and we also anticipate possibly breaking the license for said scheduler.
My question is: do we need to purchase a license ahead of time in anticipation of this issue, or would it be better to wait until the move, the license breaks and then request it? Any assistance on this issue by tomorrow is greatly appreciated. I hope that my question was clear. If not, I will be happy to clarify. Thank you.
Mike Anderson

We don't have a dedicated Redwood Forum here on SDN, but next best for infrastructure and licensing is NW Admin (a.k.a. "basis").
I will move this there.

  • Import job RSI_IMPORT_CCMS_JOBS is not working in Redwood Cronacle

    Hi,
We are facing problems in the redwood cronacle, where in the standard import job RSI_IMPORT_CCMS_JOBS is not working. When ever we are running the script, the status of the import job goes to waiting and never gets completed. When its killed and re-run it again moves to waiting status.
Cronacle version : 7.0.4.2. Hope some one will help me out to solve this issue.
    Thanks,
    Arun Raghavan

    Hi,
as mentioned by Anton in his previous post, the import of abaps and variants is a kind of nice to have that CPS does for you.  The import of abap and variant data enables CPS to create a Script with the defaults all set and ready for you to submit.  Having this data in CPS also means that when you submit your CPS SAP Script the parameter values for instance, client, abap, variant will only be a valid combination.  If you remove the Script Parameter constraints for your CPS Script then you can submit your own Script (using a copy of RSI_ABAP_RUN or RSI_ABAP_RUN_PRINT but with the param constraints removed) with whatever values you like.  If you enter a valid combination the SAP job will run.  If invalid you'll get an error when trying to submit in SAP.  Obviously the parameter constraints ideally are there to prevent this second scenario.
In terms of why the import of variants seems to hang; you haven't got variants begining with '&' have you?  CPS doesn't like these 'dynamic' variants.  I have had problems in the past where this is the case.

    Simon

  • Redwood Cronacle

    Hello All,
I am new to Rewood Cronacle. We are using Redwood Cronacle in SAP. Can any provide me the documentation of this software and also are there any training institutes in training this one. Thanks in advance.
    Ram.

    Hi Ram,
There are various documents available on the SDN to get you started.
Have a look [here|Scheduling] in the section "Technical Overview and Related Documents".
There also is some documentation in the product itself, just click the "i" icon in the top right corner of the screen.
Finally there are some tutorials on the [Redwood|http://www.redwood.com/] website, follow the links for "Membership log in" at the top to access them.
Training is provided through SAP and/or Redwood, depending on the region, so you can contact your SAP representative or Redwood via the above URL for more information.

  • Redwood Cronacle - Selects wrong variant

I have scheduled one job with 9 steps. On third step it takes some other variant, which is not present in SAP system. The mentioned varient in Job Chain is perfectly what is required and present in SAP.
Due to this incorrect selection it ends in error and restarts. This time it selects correct variant and finishes successfully. This is a monthly job and this situation has occured for last two months.
It has been verified that noone has modified the job chain in between, as the successfuly ended job was triggered by Cronacle when earlier run ended in error.
    Kindly suggest.
    Thanks.

    Hrishikesh,
As you say, the parameters for the regular scheduled job will remain as they were when submitted.  To recognise a change in the parameters you would have to cancel then submit the job again (make sure you submit it afresh from the up-to-date script/chain definition and not resubmit the old job).
I believe what could be happening to give the symptoms you describe is the regular schedule job is running with the "snapshot" of the parameters that were available when the job was first submitted.  When the job is automatically re-run it is using the correct script/chain name, but it is using the current settings of the script/chain parameters, i.e. the correct ones.  I believe this is because Redwood is submitting a one-off job to achieve the re-run and using the current parameters as defined in the up-to-date version of the script/chain.
I don't know for certain that Redwood is doing this as I've described, but it would explain your symptoms and holds with other quirks I have noticed with Redwood.
I recommend you cancel the current job and submit a new fresh one.
    Regards
    Guy

    Check for 2 things.
    1) Redwood comes with different server installations based on server config. IA64 has different setup as compared to other servers. Please check if you have installed correct version on IA64 box.
    2) Not sure which version of Cronacle you are using. If its 8 onwards, you can get setup file from support for IA64. Not sure if IA64 is supported for earlier versions. Check the help file or write to support to check if your version of cronacle supports IA64.

  • Redwood Cronacle : run a transaction directly from Cronacle

    Hello everyone,
Do you know if it's possible to run directly from Cronacle a SAP transaction without using an ABAP program ?
    Thank you for your reply.
    Scheduling team

    Hello
No this is not possible. Are there any transactions in particular that you want to schedule?
However, if you go to a transaction through the SAP GUI automatically an ABAP program is created in the background. You should be able to run that ABAP from SAP CPS.

  • Redwood Cronacle - dynamic variants

Would like to better understand dynamic variants.  I have looked in Cronacle on-line help and cannot find anything there.  Only information I have is that is needed to run RSI_GENERATE_VARIANT and then in a job chain...
step 1 to set the variant using generated script and
step 2 to executes the ABAP using template or imported script
Would like to obtain better understanding of what situations one would use dynamic variants in and maybe short list of steps to do to acccomplish same.
    Best Regards,
    Dean Atteberry.

    Hello Dean,
Yes indeed, there is no help available for dynamic variants in Redwood. Dynamic variants are those variants that are dynamically picked up from the SAP database. They are supposed to be automatically generated nightly via job RSI_GENERATE_VARIANTS. Unfortunately in Redwood, it often fails on individual jobs.

  • PO processing and Cronacle Job Scheduling

We are using PO to process data out of an external database and we are using Redwood Cronacle to start and stop the PO channel. Currently, we are relying on PO updating a column in the external database to show that its been processed. What I was wondering, is there a way we could have Cronacle monitor the PO processing so we can stop the channel once PO has processed the data?

    Hi Kobby ,
    The error : ABAP_RUN: R/3 call BAPI_XBP_JOB_ADD_ABAP_STEP failed
it comes when in the redwood u schedule a job with WRONG variant .
While scheduling the job in cronacle we must be careful that we enter it in correct letters as it in SAP side .
We faced this error so many times and I observed that there could be two reasons .
    1. The incorrect letters ( Capital or small ) when compared to SAP .
    2. There could be possibly no varaint present in the SAP .Check whether the variant is there or not .
The error clearly says that the problem is from SAP side .Not from the redwood or ur scheduling .
    Hope this helps .
    Thanks,
    RD.

  • Question about Best Practices - Redwood Landscape/Object Naming Conventions

Having reviewed documentation and posts, I find that there is not that much information available in regards to best practices for the Redwood Scheduler in a SAP environment. We are running the free version.
    1) The job scheduling for SAP reference book (SAP Press) recommends multiple Redwood installations and using export/import to move jobs and other redwood objects from say DEV->QAS->PROD. Presentations from the help.sap.com Web Site show the Redwood Scheduler linked to Solution Manager and handling job submissions for DEV-QAS-PROD. Point and Shoot (just be careful where you aim!) functionality is described as an advantage for the product. There is a SAP note (#895253) on making Redwood highly available. I am open to comments inputs and suggestions on this issue based on SAP client experiences.
    2) Related to 1), I have not seen much documentation on Redwood object naming conventions. I am interested in hearing how SAP clients have dealt with Redwood object naming (i.e. applications, job streams, scripts, events, locks). To date, I have seen in a presentation where customer objects are named starting with Z_. I like to include the object type in the name (e.g. EVT - Event, CHN - Job Chain, SCR - Script, LCK - Lock) keeping in mind the character length limitation of 30 characters. I also have an associated issue with Event naming given that we have 4 environments (DEV, QA, Staging, PROD). Assuming that we are not about to have one installation per environment, then we need to include the environment in the event name. The downside here is that we lose transportability for the job stream. We need to modify the job chain to wait for a different event name when running in a different environment. Comments?

    Hi Paul,
As suggested in book u2018job scheduling for SAP from SAPu2019 press it is better to have multiple instances of Cronacle version (at least 2 u2013 one for development & quality and other separate one for production. This will have no confusion).
Regarding transporting / replicating of the object definitions - it is really easy to import and export the objects like Events, Job Chain, Script, Locks etc. Also it is very easy and less time consuming to create a fresh in each system. Only complicated job chains creation can be time consuming.
In normal cases the testing for background jobs mostly happens only in SAP quality instance and then the final scheduling in production. So it is very much possible to just export the verified script / job chain form Cronacle quality instance and import the same in Cronacle production instance (use of Cronacle shell is really recommended for fast processing)
Regarding OSS note 895253 u2013 yes it is highly recommended to keep your central repository, processing server and licencing information on highly available clustered environment. This is very much required as Redwood Cronacle acts as central job scheduler in your SAP landscape (with OEM version).
As you have confirmed, you are using OEM and hence you have only one process server.
Regarding the conventions for names, it is recommended to create a centrally accessible naming convention document and then follow it. For example in my company we are using the naming convention for the jobs as Z_AAU_MM_ZCHGSTA2_AU01_LSV where A is for APAC region, AU is for Australia (country), MM is for Materials management and then ZCHGSTA2_AU01_LSV is the free text as provided by batch job requester.
For other Redwood Cronacle specific objects also you can derive naming conventions based on SAP instances like if you want all the related scripts / job chains to be stored in one application, its name can be APPL_<logical name of the instance>.
So in a nutshell, it is highly recommend
Also the integration of SAP solution manager with redwood is to receive monitoring and alerting data and to pass the Redwood Cronacle information to SAP SOL MAN to create single point of control. You can find information on the purpose of XAL and XMW interfaces in Cronacle help (F1).
Hope this answers your queries. Please write if you need some more information / help in this regard.
    Best regards,
    Vithal

  • Process Chains and 3rd party scheduling tools in 04s

    All,
What, if any, 3rd party scheduling tools (Autosys, CTL-M, etc...) deliver certified connectivity with 04s BW?  I've had some experience with 3.x in prior lives in having to support a custom abap pgm to submit and monitor process chains via SM37.   Has the integration with 3rd party tools changed?  If we need to connect with a 3rd party tool, is a custom 'wrapper pgm' still required?
    Thanks,

    Hi Lonnie,
SAP NetWeaver 2004s comes with the external scheduling tool Redwood Cronacle included. In the next release it will be integral part of the NetWeaver system.
