Scheduling a Shut Down/Sleep?

Hi guys,
I am currently doing a backup of my mac onto an external hard drive and it's taking much longer than I expected. It is now 1am here and I think it still has a while to go.
Since I dont want to stop the backup and waste all the previous time, I just want to ask if there is anyway I could schedule my mac for a shut down or to sleep mode once the backup finishes?
Thanks in advance,
tk

Dont worry guys, I have found my answer in the energy saver thing

  • Schedule not shutting down

I was trying to set schedule to shut down my Mac Pro after a long backup. I can set it, but when I come in in the morning the machine is still on. When I wake the system up, there is a brief view of the finder's copy window which then clears. All the backups take only 2-3 hours, but no shutdown.
    Any ideas?

it won't work if the machine is asleep - stop it from sleeping and it works

  • Shut Down/Sleep problem - HP Pavilion Notebook PC 15-e055st

I have a problem with my HP Pavilion 15 Notebook PC, model 15-e055st, which I purchased two months ago with Windows 8 pre-installed. I susequently upgraded the operating system to Windows 8.1 and all seemed to work OK.  I then used the HP Support Assistant to do some important updates, which included the BIOS and other software.  Following the HP update the computer would not Shut Down or Sleep, but Restart worked OK. When I attempt to Shut Down or Sleep, the screen goes black but the power light and the wifi light on the keyboard remain on and the fan is still operating.  The machine will not recover from this situation without me first doing a hard reset by keeping the power button pressed for about five seconds. I trıed restoring the software to the condition prior to the HP update but the problem still existed.  Two days ago I refreshed the computer, which rolled the operating system back from Windows 8.1 to Windows 8.0 but the Shut Down/Sleep problem is still there. Can anyone help me?

Hello , I have a HP pavilion 15-n003tx notebook with Windows 8 OS. I just bought it 2 weeks ago and I see that nb has a terrible problem with the sleep mode. It does not wake up from sleep and I need to use the hard reset. The specs of my nb are available herehttp://www8.hp.com/in/en/products/laptops/product-detail.html?oid=5422964#!tab=specs Its a serious issue and I have tried trouble shooting available in the links that were specified by above as well ashttp://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c03383935 Nothing helps. Please help me tackle this issue   at the earliest ... Anyone gotta fix ?

  • My G4 will not Shut Down, Sleep, or even Log Out.

When I select in the Apple pull down menu to shut down, sleep or even just to log out, it does nothing. If I am running iTunes it will turn off iTunes sound but that is the only reaction I get.
If any one can help, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thank you very much.

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
Any new devices, USB, firewire, etc.?
    Any new software?
Do you have energy saver settings set to "never"?
File sharing? Internet sharing? Fax receiving? Set to "on" these can alter sleep/power habits.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303698
    Can you restart?
If the above settings are off, and there are no new devices/software, I would force a restart, boot to the OS install disc, and run Disk Repair/repair on the system drive.

  • Laptop Shuts Down, Sleeps Randomly.  Help?

So yeah, I've had my iBook G4 14-inch since August of '05, and it's been a great machine the whole time, but recently it started shutting down and sleeping itself seemingly randomly. It works perfectly if it's running on the battery alone, and usually works okay if the battery is in and the adapter is also plugged in--until it starts sleeping itself or shuts itself down, that is. The adapter charges the battery just fine, but the computer doesn't run with the battery out and the adapter in as it should (and used to). On a related note, I've been having another power issue for a while, but it's been occasional enough that I could deal with it and didn't feel the need to post here about it. Sometimes when I'm using the laptop with the battery in and the adapter plugged in as well, even if the battery's fully charged, if I pull the adapter out it will sometimes shut down suddenly. Seeing as my battery, after almost 4 years of use, has been reduced to just 46% of its original capacity (according to a battery utility), I've been considering getting a new battery anyway and would not be opposed to buying a new one now if that would solve the problem. I'm inclined to think it's something to do with the adapter and maybe some built-in power-related software, though, as all these issues seem to come back to that.
    Any ideas?

Since the iBook sometimes doesn't recognize the power adaptor, despite resetting the PMU, it may be that there is a problem with either the power adapter itself or with the DC In Board. Here is a link to an article on troubleshooting the adaptor:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1725
The best way to troubleshoot this is to try a known good adaptor and see if that fixes the problem. That would mean finding a friend with an iBook or PowerBook with a good power adaptor or making an appointment at the Genius Bar at an Apple Store if you have access to one. They would have a store one to try.
Three things actually have to be good. Your battery is marginal, but it seems to work after a fashion. It seems that the problem is with the connection between the power port in the iBook and the power adaptor. The problem could either be with the power adaptor tip or with the port, which is part of the DC In Board. It is common for the port on the DC In Board to become damaged over time, as the solder connections holding the port to the board can break, resulting in poor or intermittent contact.
The DC In Board is not a terribly expensive part, and you could even repair it yourself if you are so inclined:
    http://www.ifixit.com/
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/
If you don't want to do it yourself, it is not too bad to have it done--I seem to remember around $110 being posted some time back from a local AASP.
    Good luck!

  • [U410] Boot/Shut Down/Sleep/Hibernate taking ages

As the title says, my Ideapad U410 takes really long on some of the most basic tasks around. And I have no idea why. I've had this laptop for a few months and it works fine, except for poor wifi (discussed elsewhere) and these issues. However, until about a week ago it would take about 5 minutes for it to go to sleep. Now it won't do that at all.
What I do know is that:
It sometimes throws errors about Intel Rapid Start Technology not being enabled. However, I can't choose to enable it in the BIOS, saying there's some sort of problem, nor can I reinstall it, as the installer tells me my laptop doesn't meet the system requirements. It stopped throwing these errors about at the same time it stopped going to sleep whatsoever.
When the laptop boots up, it hangs for 5-8 minutes on the white Lenovo logo + black background. Once it gets past that it's booted up in mere seconds. Maybe someone can tell me what exactly the computer's supposed to be doing while displaying this splash screen.
When the laptop shuts down, it hangs for about the same time in windows 8, which tells me it is "shutting down". When it goes to sleep it simply turns off the screen and remains on. For forever it seems. First time this happened I wasn't aware it was still on, so it also overheated in my bag. Seems like it's still working the same, though.
I've also read some instructions on enabling iRTS. However, no matter which set of steps I follow, I get into some sort of problem. My SSD for example won't show up in cmd's DISKPART. Yet I can see and access it from Windows Explorer. In the same sense I can see iRTS in the bios, but I can't choose to enable it. And I'm not even sure iRTS is the problem here! It's simply the only error I get thus the only lead for me to go on.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated! When I bought this laptop I was told it's supposed to be fast and right now it's not.

Yes and no. Booting up still takes just as long, but I got the sleeping issues resolved a long time ago. Since I barely ever shut the laptop off I figured the risks outweighed the benefits as for getting the SSD and/or bootup problems resolved, so I gave up on that eventually.
For me the sleeping problems were related to intel rapid storage technology, I seem to recall that once I got rid of that sleeping started working fine. But again, I resolved this a long time ago and don't fully remember.

  • G4 Cube randomly shuts down/sleeps, starts up

I just got a G4 Cube from a friend that is exhibiting some very odd symptoms. The Cube is completely stock (with the exception that I replaced the PRAM battery, see below), and is the 450Mhz DVD-ROM model.
What it will do is occasionally, and for no apparent reason, will suddenly shut down. This happens completely randomly, and appears to NOT depend on what I'm doing with the computer at any particular moment. Sometimes it doesn't even make it through a complete boot cycle before it shuts down; other times, it boots up and appears to work fine, only to suddenly shut down hours (or even days) later.
At first I thought maybe it was overheating (as I have heard that the Cube is notorious for heat problems); however, this appears to not be the case. When the machine suddenly shuts down, both the Cube itself as well as the power supply do not feel noticably hot to the touch. Also, it has remained up through obviously processor intensive tasks. (For example, the other day I was playing Starcraft, and basically finished the entire Terran campaign and it didn't even bat an eyelash, but, hours later, after the machine had sat idle, I went to fire up Safari to browse a website only to have it suddenly shut down.)
Also, at least once, the machine has mysteriously STARTED UP on its own. I always shut down the machine before leaving for work in the morning, but one day I came back home to find that the machine had somehow, mysteriously STARTED UP while I was gone. Nobody was home all day, and we don't have any small animals that might have accidentally brushed up against the power switch. (no, I haven't yet called in a Ghost Hunting team to determine whether any supernatural forces were involved, although at this point I'm beginning to wonder if that may not be a bad idea...)
Anyway, like I said before, the machine was stock, except when it came to me, the PRAM battery was obviously dead (I got the "your clock is set before 1970" message on bootup). The mysterious shutdown problems started occurring right away, so I thought maybe the PRAM had gotten corrupted and was causing weird things to happen. So I obtained a replacement PRAM battery and installed it myself (yes, I observed proper static discharge precautions). While I was in there, I hit the CUDA switch for good measure. Unfortunately this didn't help.
Does anybody have any ideas as to what this might be? Flaky power supply or voltage regulator? Maybe even a bad power switch? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Update: I've managed to find yet another Apple official slot loading DVD-ROM drive firmware updater for the Power Mac G4 Cube. It seems Apple used two different models of slot loading Matshita DVD-ROM drives in that particular model of Power Mac. Here's a link to the other Firmware Updater Apple Knowledge Base Article: http://tinyurl.com/9rzvw.
I also found another Mac OS 9 Update for the Power Mac G4 called Hard Drive Update 1. Here's a link to the relevant Knowledge Base Article: http://tinyurl.com/36t4v7.

  • Macbook Pro retina mid 2012 restarts instead of shut down/sleep

it's been happening since i upgraded from mountain lion 10.8.5 to mavericks 10.9.2 :
my rMBP mid 2012 2.6g 8gb always restarts when i shut it down via apple logo or power button. it also restarts when i choose sleep or i close the lid.
it happens only with charger connected.
once i didn't realize that it happened as "rolling restarts" with lid closed in my bag after i close it, the battery drained out from fully charged (charger disconnected).
with default energy saver setting, it always says "Your computer restarted because of a problem." when i woke it from sleep.
i did reset SMC and NVRAM but it didn't solve that problem.
also, at the beginning of the problem, kernel panic happened so often.
fyi, i have only 2 or 3 kernel panic when i run it with mountain lion.
    any solution for that?

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

    Two things to check..
    1. make sure your database is running, its look like Scheduling server trying to connect the database and its getting connection timed out error.
    2. Make sure the entry in the TNSNAMES.ora file is pointing to right DB server.

  • Schedule wake/ shut down

Is it possible to schedule energy saver to turn on/off 1set of times during the week and a different set of times at weekends? I seem to be able to do 1 or the other but not both at the same time?

Thanks, that looks very handy. I will attempt it when I get home. It just occurred to me that I could set the schedule in energy saver to shutdown at the same time every day, then just use the method you linked to create a new power on time for weekends. I'm assuming that would work?
One last question if I may? I know home sharing is limited to 5 computers, but does that apply to ios devices too? We have 2 iPads, 3 iPhones. 1 iPod and an apple tv in the house.
Many thanks for taking the time to help me.

  • Auto save when scheduling shut down?

Is there a script or application that would allow me to have every program save and close before the system automatically shuts down when scheduled in energy saver?
I work for at a video production studio and we often have to leave the computers on over night to transcode, render or export.
Is it possible for running programs such as final cut pro, compressor, and dvd studio pro to auto save when closing during scheduled automatic shut down?

Sounds to me like scheduled shut down in your environment is not ideal. Why not just let the machines remain on? They'll go to sleep normally (unless you've disabled that) once all activity is done, and sleep mode uses very little power.

  • Schedule shut down is at radom time

    Hi
I have set-up a schedule to shut down at 3am. it works some times, but most of the time it doesn't as I wake-up and the PB is on, and them like today at 10am or so, the schedule shut down quicks in prompting me?
My tab isn't locked, as mentioned in other post.
Not a big issue, but that means something is wrong somewhere, and my PB lack some sleep as well.
    Thank you in advance

    lune:
Lots of questions. I'll try to get to at least a few now.
I am doing the repairs on HD volume rather than the 74.4gb Hitachy, never been sure which one to choose)
When working in Disk Utility, both for Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions, you want to select the Manufacturer's ID, instead of the volumne name. You want to work with the volume on the HDD, as the directory is built into the HDD.
Would you say that I should consider the idefrag solution to keep things running smoothly?
Here's what Apple says About disk optimization with Mac OS X. That said, I do a complete disk optimization at least monthly, sometimes twice. I use Tech Tool Pro. It's one of the best all round utilities out there. DriveGenius is supposed to be pretty good, too, but I am not personally familiar with it. It is the one utility that I have heard reported to do repartitioning on the fly successfully.
I'll return to you other questions later.
    Good luck.

  • MacBook will not shut down or go to sleep

My MacBook is not shutting down or going to sleep.
When I try to shut down: The desktop disappears as normal but then the plain blue screens appears (with the little circle down the bottom which spins (not the beach ball)) and it just stays there forever. To shut down I need to hold the power button for 10 seconds.
When I try to put the MacBook to sleep by closing the lid: The light in the bottom right hand corner comes on but it does not "pulse" - suggesting it has not gone to sleep.
When I try to put the MacBook to sleep using the Apple (top left hand) menu: Nothing happens.
I am not 100% sure when this started happening, but I believe it either started happening after:
    a) The firmware update which was supposed to fix the "mooing" problem"; or
    b) One of the system software updates.
If you need my current system/firmware version, you will have to tell me how to do this because I don't know how to find these numbers.
This is really frustrating because I move my laptop around a lot so I would like to be able to use the shut down/sleep functions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First couple things to check is do you have any external drives plugged into the Macbook? My macbook would sleep because I had an external drive that prevented it from sleeping.
Also, check what's loading at Startup. There might be a program that's preventing this. Something that constantly needs internet access would cause this. Open up your System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items. See if something in there could be causing the problem.
    Hope that helps a little.

  • New iMac shuts down but does not start as set in Energy Saver Schedule

Set Energy Saver schedule to shut down at 2300 and it does so at approx 2305. Set schedule to start up at 0700 and it does so the next day but NOT after that (have repeated the exercise 3 times - same result!).

You should not be having "Energy Saver" problems on a new iMac.
Have you tried any of the following?Restarting your computer?
    Doing a PRAM zap?
Since you are still under warranty, strongly suggest that you take full advantage of it by calling Apple tech support.  Especially if you are within 90 days of your warranty and/or have AppleCare.

  • My MBP shuts down or sleeps (?) when I close the lid

    Hi
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I haven't been able to solve it on my own by investigating, asking others og reading this forum.
My MBP from late 2007 has recently started to shut down/sleep (or maybe even "hibernate" - not sure which is the right term) when I close the lid - meaning that when I open it, it *doesn't wake up automatically* like it used to. *I need to push the "on" button and it takes it a while to start up*. It doesn't start up from scratch; it shows the last screen shaded in a light grey tone - and it's takes quite a few seconds to get ready. As far as I recall, it "woke up" automatically before.
I haven't changed my preferences - and they are all set to "never", as my MBP is nerly always connected to the adaptor.
Any clues to what happened and how I can change it? It's really annoying!
    Thanks,
    Carina

    Welcome!
When my MBP started that same behavior, I found that I had accumulated a huge list of wireless networks on my travels. Reviewing the system log, I found my computer was trying to connect to one, a hotel network to which I had connected weeks before and miles away.
Here's how I fixed it (I have 10.5.8, not 10.6, but the fix should be the same):
    1) Open System Preferences and select "Network."
    2) Be sure "Airport" is selected in the left side of that preference pane.
    3) Click the "Advanced" button. If the next screen does not have the "Airport" tab selected, select it. There should be a window with a list of networks.
    4) Use the + and - buttons below to remove any networks you have accumulated that are not needed. Example: on mine, I removed all but two networks--our home network and the one at a local museum where I volunteer.
    5) Once you'd cleaned off the list to the bare necessities, uncheck the option labeled, "Remember any network this computer has joined." This will not prevent you from using other networks on later travels but will prevent them building up and creating problems.
That completely cured my wake-from-sleep problems. and other have said it worked for them, too.
