Scheduling a specific file into time machine
I use fusion to create a virtual pc. I would like to have it backed up in Time Machine either every time I use it, once a day, or a time I specify. How can I do this? The file is 29 GB

I'm afraid it's all or nothing if you want things to work automatically. Otherwise you have to use the TM preferences to exclude the VPC folder and let "normal" backups happen; then remove the exclusion and do a manual backup. Then exclude it again.

Finding specific files in Time Machine archives
So I have a whole bunch of audio files of different lines from 2001: A Space Odyssey on my computer. Or at least I did. They seem to have disappeared without a trace, and I can't track them down.
Is there any way to search the archives of Time Machine for specific file names or wildcards? It seems to me I can only browser the folder tree, but I don't recall where on the drive I may have stored the files.

Peggy, I tried your method described above. I've had a folder that used to live on my desktop but that I deleted some time ago. Inside I had a file, collage2.tif. After entering the name and click File Name (and at this point, I get the result window showing no found file - I had not clicked on anything else in the search window), I click on TM's icon. In TM, I click on the back arrow, and TM goes back in time, but doesn't show the file. [In fact it goes back to the very first back up.] However, if I look in the desktop folder and inside the subfolder that I had deleted (it shows up now since I've gone back in time), there's the file. I then checked to see if that folder/file existed on a more recent date (I wondered if TM want back in time to the most recent day that file existed) and sure enough, it exists in more recent days.
I've tried this several times, searching "This Mac" and "Desktop", but TM doesn't find the file, even though I can manually find it.

Remove specific files from Time Machine backups
My Time Capsule is getting pretty full and I know it will delete the oldest backup first, but looking at the oldest backup via TM, its full of some huge video files which just happen to be in the next three or four backups as well - but not exactly the same as they were edited each time.
At 16Gb a shot they would be ideal candidates for trashing without deleting the rest of the backup. Is it possible to delete individual files within a backup leaving the rest unaffected ?Graham Outterside wrote:

that's because a sparse bundle does not automatically compact when you delete some of the contents. you can compact it from terminal if you really want to but there should be no need. new backups will take the freed space in the bundle eventually.
to compact a sparse bundle you need to run the following terminal command
sudo hdiutil compact /path/to/sparsebundle
put the correct unix path to the sparse bundle in the command. an easy way to get it is to drag the bundle to the terminal window. make sure that all the space in the command are correct.
Looking at the backup logs for subsequent backups I got;

Whats interesting is that TM is deleting the oldest backup POST SL and not going back to try and delete the oldest backup which is May 2008.
I don't know why this would happen. did you do a regular install of SL? did you make any hardware changes to the computer?
Secondly the files deleted from the May June and July 2008 backups have not affected the sparsebundle file size.
I am fairly sure its a'user account'issue and this user cannot delete the oldest backup or thin down the sparsebundle as its owned by the older pre-SL user.
no. this has nothing to do with user account issues. TM runs for the whole computer as root and does not care about individual accounts.
not sure where to go from here to get any hard disc space back as its just going to keep deleting recent copies in prefernce to old ones. -
HT201250 How can I find a file on Time Machine.
The file was on my Desktop at one time but has been deleted. Typing it's name in the TM Spotlight field and clicking the Back Button (per the TM tutorial) doesn't work. Has anyone found a specific file on Time Machins that is no longer on the Mac?
First of all, I don't work for Apple and neither do most people who post here. This is primarily a user community.
The documentation is correct, even if you didn't have any success. I prefer to use mende1's suggestion, so I don't use Spotlight in Time Machine.
I understand you are frustrated, as I would be if it didn't work. Computer frustration isn’t one of my favorite pastimes.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Installed Yosemite on iMac desktop. Made sure I backed up and disconnected external hard drive. Yosemite deleted a printer/scanner application. Went into Time Machine to restore it and it was gone. When external hd was remounted Yosemite went into it, probably to index, and deleted the application from all backups. Wonder what else is missing?? Besides being unbelievably SLOW now I have to see what else has been lost.
Can you simply navigate to your Time Machine backup with the Finder? Treat it like an external hardrive and just look for your old Applications folder. /Applications/
Also, quite a few apps put config and support files in ~/Library/Application\ Support/
So you may be able to get the files from there as well. -
I can not access my files in time machine
I am trying to restore a file from time machine. When I try to select the file in time machine, it is not accessible. I can not select anything. Only the folder that was selected when I started time machine is highlighted and can be restored but I can not switch to a different folder or select a specific file.
This option was removed in v9.1.5

Two external drives, one for time machine backups and a second (daisy chained firewire) for itunes media folder . Time machine fails to backup the media file saying could not be completed, with no error specified. Steps taken already include reformating drive with media, dragging older media backup file from time machine disc to media disc, and deleting time machine plist and starting time macine preferences upon startup. Media folder is approx 200 gb, mostly ripped dvd movies.
Any help for this??

How to restore files from Time Machine after Clean Install of Mavericks. I know the data is there but seems unaccessable because I may have changed the Computer or Owner name. Is there any way to fix that now?

my back-up data is managed by Time Machine; the actual data is on a second internal Hard Drive with a capacity of 1TB - not partitioned. I am using Time Machine and have access to all data backed up since Mavericks Clean Install but not the data prior to this date.
When I open the 1TB drive in Finder I can see a folder "Backups.backupdb/Sigi's Mac Pro/ followed by many folders of backup dates going back to 2010-09-20-103441 and up to 2014-02-07-142414 all followed with folder Macintosh HD. February 7th 2014 was the date of the clean install.
These Backups are followed by backup date folder 2014-02-08-075554 with a subfolder of MacPro-320GB (this is the name I assigned to my Boot Drive during formatting; I suspect I should have assigned the same name as before ie. Macintosh HD) and 2014-02-11 with a subfolder Macintosh HD, these are the ones I get access to by way of Time Machine > Restore.
Weird thing is on Febr 11 when I relised my possible mistake and renamed the Bootdrive back to what it was initially ie. Macintosh HD despite this I have access to all backup data since the Clean Install in both folders MacPro-320GB as well as Macintosh HD but not to any data prior to the Clean Install.
Is there something that Time Machine knows and prevents access or is it simply a matter of renaming the subfolder 2014-02-08-07554/MacPro-320GB to ........./Macintosh HD?
I like to restore selectively and not everything - It was hard work reinstalling apps that were supposed to be the troublemakers (ref my discussion on Maverick problems) but I now need to get onto data specific to some of these apps as well as other data I may have missed. Long story? Yes and sorry.

Why can't I restore a file from Time Machine?
I purchased a new Macbook Pro a month ago. I migrated all my stuff from my previous Macbook that was running Maverick. All went well. However, I was looking for a particular file. Apparently I had removed it from my old Mac at some point, but I found it in Time Machine. My backups are on an external hard drive. Again, I can see the file in Time Machine, but I can't seem to do anything with it.
To that end, I see two files: one has shows the file size, and the other (same name, file type, etc...) says "Calculating size"...forever.
Thoughts? Suggestions?Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the restore operation again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
Can't delete files in Time Machine
I have a time machine backup that was used to back up a borrowed computer. The computer has been returned and I want to delete the backups. I can get into time machine with the new computer and delete some of the backup. But some of the files just won't delete.
It asks me if I want to deleted them. I enter an administrator password. And it makes the sound to indicate it is finished, but the files (and the folder they are in) are still there.

That's likely what you need to do. It sounds like the previous deletions left some "abandoned" space you'll never get back otherwise, and there may be directory damage, too, which can compromise your backups.
Then partition the drive, so Time Machine has it's own, exclusive partition. See #3 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Or, your best bet may be to use a separate drive for Time Machine. -
Cannot copy files from Time Machine
Hi,
I wanted to trash all my Time Machine Files yesterday but when I tried to empty the trash, my Mac started to count all the files on the trash for so long that I decided to undo that. So, I opened the trash and decided to move back again all my Time Machine back up files into the original disk where they where. My Mac started to count all the files and it did not stopped since then? What can I do to resolve this issue, since my Mac has been counting files since very late last night and it's been doing this ever since: it's been counting for at least one day?
Can I stop the process and do something else, I would not like to damage my disk or something else. I know I should have taken a «reformat» option instead but right now I do not know if I can stop this process or should I let it run for I do not know how long???

After consideration of all this precious time spent, I've decided finally to call at Apple support even if my Apple Care coverage had expired for so many years. The 35$ fee for a month services was largely worth the call and the service I received... So, with the help of a well trained expert, I got the job done very fast et efficiently! Mind you, I had to insist to be in the hand of a good expert before doing anything, this was a "must" in my case...
After explaining my problem to this expert I realized that I was in good hands: he knew what was the problem and he really made my call worth all the money. I agreed to share my screen with him and we started with Terminal.
First:
I emptied the trash by typing the proper command in Terminal. I tried it before but it wasn't working since all my backup files from Time Machine where not on my local disk, they where on another internal disk. With his help, I identified the proper disk and when Terminal executed the command, it was done in no time. Sweet, no more counting! But my files where still on the trash, no one could tell how long this would take to trash everything. I had a zillion files in my Backup from Time Machine!
Second:
So, I asked my expert: "since we don't know how long will this process will take, will reformatting the disk, be better and will this save time? Is it possible since all my files on this disk are in the trash? He said: "Yes it will work even if your files are in the trash". Ok, let's do it! So, I've stopped the process after a few minutes and started Disk Utility. I then identified the volume and hit the "erase" button.
Voilà, the job was done perfectly after 2 minutes, my disk was clean.
Conclusion:
Is it both actions that did the job, I cannot say. But in my case, it worked perfectly. I know, I should have reformat my disk first, it would have save me so much time.
May my mistake serve other users in the futur! If anyone would like the command codes I used in Terminal, feel free to ask.

What do you mean by duplicate?
Time Machine will keep 1 copy of a unique file and then us hardlinks in all the incremental backups to the single original. A new file will not be put into Time Machine unless it is moved to a new location or the file in a given location has changed.

Upgraded to Mavericks, can't find files on time machine
I have an external hard drive where I backup my Macbook Pro. I recently upgraded to Mavericks and now I can't find old files on time machine. I am looking for a file around a certain date, but no matter what date I look at in time machine - the files and data seem to be the same. I hope someone has a solution to my problem!

Restoring specific files or folders
Choose Enter Time Machine from the Time Machine menu. The restore interface appears. You can literally see your windows as they appeared "back in time."
You can use the timeline on the right side of the window to reach a certain point back in time. The timeline shows the times of all backups on your backup drive. If you don’t know exactly when you deleted or changed a file, you can use the back arrow to let Time Machine automatically travel through time to show you when that folder last changed.
Note: Dates in pink indicate the data resides on your Time Machine backup device. Dates in white indicate the data resides on your Mac. In OS X Lion v10.7 and later, portable Macs include local snapshots.
You can also perform a Spotlight search from the Finder. Simply enter a search term in the Spotlight search field, and use the back arrow to have Time Machine search through your backups to find what you are looking for.
Before you restore a file, you can also use Quick Look to preview a file to make sure its the one you want. Highlight the file and press the Space Bar to bring up a quick look.
To restore, select the file/folder and click the "Restore" button. The file will automatically be copied to the desktop or appropriate folder. If the file you are restoring has another file in the same location with the same name, you will be prompted to choose which file to keep or keep both.

Deleting files on Time Machine HDD
I have a folder containing 2GB or more of music that I don't need backed up any longer. How can I free up the space on my Time Machine HDD and delete this folder?
Does Time Machine just reference this folder once or does it continuously make back ups of your system? I can go back in to the Time Machine drive and find this folder listed for every back up ever made by Time Machine.
What about all the huge bit torrent files I've downloaded? How can I cherry pick and delete them off Time Machine's HDD? I'd like to have more than 12GB left on my 500GB back up drive!Don't do it manually. I wouldn't even know how, since Time Machine is using multi-linking to make one copy of a file appear to be in multiple date/time archive folders. So if a file never changed during the whole time you have been using Time Machine, it should only be stored once. But if you look in your archive using Finder, it appears to be in every one of your date/time archive folders.
The way to do what you want is through the Time Machine +flying through space+ interface.
Open a Finder window, then go into Time Machine. In the cool interface, navigate to the folder or file you want to eliminate from your backup. Right (Control) click on it and select +Delete All Backups of "<name of the item>"+. -
Moving backup files on Time Machine external
I've bought a new, larger external hard drive and have restored my earlier Time Machine backups to it. When I double-click the drive's desktop icon (not going into Time Machine itself) and have a look at the contents, all my backups are in a folder called Canon i560, which is my printer, which itself is inside the Backups.backupd folder. I have already reclaimed the older drive for my SuperDuper backup, so I don't know if this file structure existed in the original Time Machine backups. I've had no problems with running Time Machine, but would it be safe for me to move the backups from the Canon folder directly into the Backups.backupd folder and delete the Canon folder, which is otherwise empty?
Here's what the structure should be (using dots to represent spaces, in Finder List VIew):
Backups.backupdb
..Your Computer Name
....Date&Time
......HD name
....Date&Time
......HD name
If you're saying you see "Canon i560" instead of your computer's name, then that must be your computer's name. Go to System Preferences > Sharing and change it.
But *never change, delete, or move anything in your TM backups via the Finder.* That can hopelessly corrupt them!
