Scheduling Network downtime of guest network

Is it possible to schedule the Time Capsule to shut down it's guest network access at certain times throughout the day - i.e. homework time. Would like to keep the kids off their ipod touches during homework times. Trying to avoid manual shut down because I will always forget or not be available. Thanks!

Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I'm not sure if this works with the guest network, but you might look into the Time Capsule's access control features. In AirPort Utility look at the AirPort panel, Access Control tab. Set the "MAC Address Access Control" list to "Timed Access", then add each device and declare its permitted access times. To identify the MAC addresses, pull down the "Base Station" menu, select "Logs and Statistics", then choose the "DHCP Clients" tab.

• IPad will not connect with extended network and/or guest network

I have extended my main network (AP Extreme) with an AP Express and uses a guest network too, all Macs, PC's, iPhones, game consoles, mediaplayers can connect to the internet with both networks. Only one device does not work with the main network and that is the iPad (1st gen). It can connect to the guest network, though. If i disconnect the Express, the iPad can connect with the main network or if I set the guest network to off it will too. But I want to connect to the main network (remote access).
Device. Network. iPad internetconnection
Extreme. Main. Yes
Extreme + Express. Main. Yes
Extreme. Main + guest Yes both
Extreme + Express. Main + guest. NO
I have reset the network configurations on the iPad and it works for only one time, if the iPad goes into sleep mode and restarts, the connections is lost. The iPad seems to be connected with the router/AP but no internet access.
Fyi
- all devices have a fixed IP address dedicated by the Airport. i tried to use DHCP, but no difference
- radio channels on automatic
- all on 2,4 GHz band
IS THIS A IPAD 1 ISSUE and do I have to accept the fact that Apple does not support the iPad 1 anymore?
Any suggestions how to fix this? Thank you.

Thank you for the suggestion.
The name of my home wifi network is automatically found by the iPad and after I select it the iPad asks for a password. I have typed in my password that I use with my laptop, but it does not work.
I also tried the two alpha numeric 13 digit strings on my router. It is actually a Belkin. Neither of those worked either.
finally, I went into general as I could not find settings to tell the iPad to forget network settings?

• Airport Extreme 802.11AC + 5th Gen and guest network access

I have the current gen Airport Extreme 802.11AC with a 5th Gen extending the network. With this setup, I am unable to login using our guest network setup. I have tried using guest network with a password and one without but its the same results. When a guest logins, it stuck attempting to login with no error messages.
So is it possible to have this configuration and still have guest network access?

Please review what I said originally.......that the guest network function on the AirPort Extreme is designed to work with a simple modem......so the AirPort acts as the main router for the network..
Another way of saying the same thing is that the AirPort needs to be "in charge" of your network for the guest feature to work correctly. The AirPort cannot be in charge if it is connected to another device that is already configured to be the main router on your network.....your Actiontec modem/router.
The Actiontec device combines the functions of a separate modem and a separate router in one package. This type of device is known as a modem/router, or also known as a gateway.
Some folks call a modem/router or a gateway......a modem. So, things can get confusing.
I do not know if it is possible for the Actiontec device that you have to be configured to act as a simple modem.....so the routing functions of the device are completely turned off. (Turning off the wireless on the Actiotec does not turn off the routing function).
If you turn off the wireless on the Actionec, it becomes a modem and a wired router. And that wired router is still in charge of your network.
The guest network feature will not work correctly unless the AirPort is in charge of your network.
My suggestion was for you to ask your Internet Service Provider (ISP), if they could supply you with a simple modem. That is all that you need. You don't need two routers....and the Actiontec that you have now is not allowing the guest feature to work correctly.

• Solution for Windows 7 can not connect to Time Capsule Guest network

Problem: Sony Vaio running Windows 7 (64bit) will not connect to my Time Capsule Guest network
For added security, I set up a guest network at home. My friend brought over a Vaio and was unable to get an internet connection via my Guest network. The Vaio connected to the Time Capsule with no problem, with full bars, but was not able to get on the internet.
After way too many hours going through useless online suggestions and even calling Apple tech support to see if there might be a known compatibility issue (where I was told they had no idea and I should call Mr Softy) I discovered that the Vaio had somehow set itself to use the DNS Server address of the Time Capsule, main network, not the guest network. (ie Main network uses 10.1...., Guest uses 172.1....) so once I set the Vaio to Obtain DNS server address automatically it fixed the problem and connected to the internet via the Guest network.
Detailed solution:
Configure Time Capsule Guest as follows:
Network Name: fill in the blank
Allow Guest Network to communicate: left unchecked
Guest Network Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
Password: fill in the blank
Configure Vaio:
Set up new connection from the Network and Sharing center using the name given to Guest network
(for password chose WPA2-Personal>AES>then your Guest Password)
Select Manage wireless networks from left column in main Network and Sharing center window
Select Adapter Properties
Click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) to highlight it, and Select Properties
Make sure both Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected then OK & go back to Network and Sharing center
Connection is active.
Hope this helps those condemned to playing system admin for their windows brethren

Great post!
Here are a couple of more methods to add to your bag of tricks:
Method #1: Use Win7's built-in diagnostics to remedy network maladies
• Start > Start Search > type in: ncpa.cpl <Enter>
• Select current active connection.
• Click Diagnose this connection
• Select Reset the network adapter
Method #2: Use the ipconfig tool to renew the DHCP-provided IP address information
• Start, then click Run, and then, type: cmd, and then, press <enter>
• At the prompt, enter the following commands; press <enter> after entering each one:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

• Trying to set up a wireless guest network using Airport base station. The first network setup was fine but the second one doesn't work. Any suggestions?

I purchased the new Airport base station that allows for a wireless setup of a primary network and a guest network. The primary network installation worked great but I cannot get the guest network to work properly. Any suggestions on how to make it work?

The AirPort base station is designed to connect to a simple modem......not a modem/router or gateway device that is often furnished to users by Internet Service Providers.
So, the first troubleshooting question would be to find out what the make and model of the device that you call your "modem" might be.....to see if you have the right kind of product that will allow the Guest Network to operate correctly.

• How can I use Guest network when my internal server provides the DNS?

How can I use guest network when my internal server provides the DNS? The help article TS4505 tells me to enter an external DNS server, but I believe I can not configure my network that way...

Apple assumes that you will be connecting the Time Capsule to a simple modem....and.....that the Time Capsule is configured as a router to provide DHCP and NAT services for the network.
The Guest Network cannot be enabled correctly unless the Time Capsule is in charge of DHCP and NAT services on the network.
Another way of saying the same thing is that the Guest Network will not operate correctly if the Time Capsule is configured in Bridge Mode or DHCP Only.

• Airplay speakers on a guest network?

Greetings,
I have searched the forums (and the internet) and have not come up with an answer. So I thought I'd ask here...
Is it possible to allow guests (on an Airport guest network) to connect to audio speakers on an Aiport Express via Airplay?
I found some hints in my searches that this is possible, though have not gotten it to work. I suspect the Airport Guest Network does not allow Airplay access, though hope someone here can prove that wrong!
My detailed setup:
- Base Station: Airport Extreme (sixth generation / tower form factor) with 7.7.3 FW
- Creates a main network
- Creates a guest network
- Networks extended with:
- Airport Extreme (fifth? generation / flat form factor) with 7.6.3 FW
- Airport Express (latest generation / flat form factor) with 7.6.4 FW
- Airport Express (latest? generation / flat form factor) with 7.6.4 FW
- Each Airport Express has speakers connected to the audio (1/8") jack
Though physically one would think they would connect differently, Airport Utility shows the three extenders each connecting directly to the base station.
In Airport Utility:
- Main and Guest networks extended on all devices
- Airplay enabled on each Express
- On Base Station, File Sharing allowed with "device password".
^^^ For file sharing, I typically have disabled this, though have turned it on as one answer I found hinted that this would allow Airplay to work on the guest network. I have tried turning this on and off, as well as cycling through the sharing options (with device password, etc).
Airplay works just fine on the main network, but not on the guest networks. Again, I suspect this is the intended behavior, but also see music / audio sharing as a key feature of iTunes, etc, and am hoping Apple has allowed this somehow on guest networks.
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Best,
Devyn

You cannot. There are no settings on the Airport to allow this.
You can establish daily time limits using Access Control, but I believe that this will only work on the "main" network. I don't have an AirPort handy here to check on that detail. Perhaps another user can help us on that.

• Timed Access controlling Main and Guest Network

I have a Time Capusle 4G running software v7.5.2. I am running a Guest Network as well as a closed network.
In the Timed Access window i have default set to "no access". Then, all the computers that are allowed access to the main network are on the list. My guest network is broadcasting but when a user tries to connect to it, they get an "Unable to connect" message. If I change the default access in Timed Access to "Everyday", users are then able to connect to the Guest network again.
Obviously, this is a bug/missing feature and has been for several software revisions. I don't want people accessing the main network that aren't on the timed access list. However, I still want guest users to access the Guest Network, without using MAC address filtering on the Guest Network.
It looks to me that the Timed Access window is controlling the restriction of the Guest and Main network. Which renders the Guest Network feature pretty much useless.
Hopefully this will be addressed in the near future. If other people are experiencing this problem, Please let me know.
-Ghost

It looks to me that the Timed Access window is controlling the restriction of the Guest and Main network.
Your observation is correct. Access control using Timed Access is an ALL or NOTHING feature for both the Main and Guest networks. The Guest network is basically a VLAN function.

• Wired + Private Wireless + Guest Networks

I'm attempting to setup a configuration that I don't seem able to get correct. I have a small wired network at my church with a file server and a couple of dozen users, some of which have laptops and would like to be able to roam wirelessly through the building. In addition, I would like to have an unsecured wireless guest network for visitors which provides access to the internet and does not have access to the file server.
The specifics are a wired 192.168.1.xxx network with a NAT'd DSL modem/router. I have 4 Airport Extreme dual radio N devices. I've tried setting the first Airport Extreme unit to shared IP, the only setting that allows me to also use a guest network, with a private SSID handing out 172.0.xxx.xxx addresses and a guest network handing out 10.0.xxx.xxx addresses. It seems logical to me that I would want to used bridged mode to allow my private wireless uses to see the server, but the Airport Extreme tells me I can not use a guest network with that setting.
With this setup, I can not get to my server by name, but I can get to by IP address. I guess that's not a huge problem since I have such a small number of users, I can add the server IP address to a hosts file on each client. What bothers me most is that I can get to the server IP from the guest network as well as the private network. Am I missing something?
My second point of confusion is when I try to configure the other 3 Airport Extremes to extend the network. The configuration tools asks me which wireless network I want to extend, and allows me to choose only the private network OR the guest network. I thought it should be able to extend both networks simultaneously. Am I mistaken on this as well?
I'm certain I've left out plenty of information you may need to assist so please ask, I will gather what ever I can. Thanks in advance.

Hello muellgre. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Unfortunately, Apple does not provide you with very many options when it comes to their Guest network feature. It is basically designed to work with a single AirPort/Time Capsule router in your network configuration.
As you have found out, it will only be available if you have the AirPort configured as a NAT router and not as a bridge. Also you cannot extend a Guest network. I'm actually surprised that you were given this option.
Since you have a DSL gateway upstream of your AirPorts that is performing as your primary Internet router, you would want all of your AirPorts to be configured as bridges. Regardless if you were connecting them all back to the DSL gateway by Ethernet or creating a WDS extended network.
If you go the route of configuring a single Extreme as a router, you will have a Double NAT configuration, which is not bad in itself, but does add some complexity when attempting to share between network segments.
One option would be to reconfigure the DSL gateway as a bridge, and then, configure one of the Extremes as a router to allow it to handle NAT & DHCP services for the network. This will also give you your guest network. You can also extend this Extreme with the others, but not its guest network ... so, overall, this might not satisfy all of your networking requirements.

• Wireless Guest network config question

Hello,
I have installed SAP2602I access points at my customers location and configured a corporate network and a guest network. Everything works fine except when a user is connected to the guest network, they cannot access a web server that is hosted internally. Users on the guest network can access any other web-site fine, just not the one hosted by this same company on a local machine. This locally hosted web-site can be accessed by users from the Internet just fine.
I am guessing there is an issue with routing but I am not sure what, any ideas?
Thanks,
Mitchell Smith
North Texas Networks

Hi Steve,
Thanks for your reply. I am sure the problem is a hair pinning issue as the firewall config does not allow connections to the outside address from internal clients.
Can you give me a sample config to make this work? Is it just a firewall mod or more than that?
Thanks,
Mitchell

• Guest Network & WAN access ... Why?

Just bought a TC. Everything works great. 5Ghz network, regular 2.4 Ghz network, but the guest network has me a little nervous. It functions however if you are on it and load up Airport Utility, you have full access to the TC.
I want to use Setup Over WAN for use on the regular networks but I don't want Guests to have access... Am I doing something wrong or is this a case of "It's just the way it is"?
Thanks

Welcome to the discussions, dw1985!
but the guest network has me a little nervous.
We had a chance to test out the Guest network feature recently when my sister was visiting and using her MacBook to connect to the "Guest" network here.
She could only connect to the Internet and was not able to "see" any of the other devices on the main network, such as other computers, Time Capsule, etc.
Since you are taking bandwidth away from the main network when you enable the guest network, you might want to turn the "guest" network on only when you have "guests".
I did not test the setup over WAN, so can't comment on that but would point out that when you do this, you are connecting to the Time Capsule from a remote location over the Internet. If you don't need this capability, you might want to disable that function.

• Guest Network and iTunes DJ

Is it possible for users connected to the guest network to use iTunes DJ for an iTunes library which is on a Mac connected to the main network?

The MAC address filtering is for the main wireless network and not for the guest network.
The guest network is different from your private wireless network. This is very convenient especially if you always have guests in your home who would like to access the Internet.
When guests connect to the Guest network, they can connect to the Internet but will not have access to computers and devices which are connected to your Valet or Linksys Wireless-N Router. The Guest network is a virtual network within your private network.
The Guest network operates on a different IP address range (192.168.33.x). This allows your guests to connect to the Internet without becoming a part of your private network.
The guest will need the password to the network if they want to access the Internet.

• Guest Network on E3000 / Password problem

Hi,
I have the E3000, I want to use the Guest Network for wireless access. Using Cisco Connect I add a password to the Guest Network. The Guest network then shows up as open or unsecure on laptop and phone. I have renamed my network and changed the main password and nothing seems to help, Guest always shows up as unsecure or open. I tried Cisco chat and they were no help.
Any ideas on how I can get the password to work on the Guest Network?

• I installed a new router from my ISP provider and now I can't find my Time Capsule or "Guest" network. What do I need to do to correct this problem?

I installed a new (and supposedly better & stronger) router from my ISP provider (Verizon) and now I can't find my Time Capsule or "Guest" network.
My Mac is not backing up because it can't find my Time Capsule network & my "Guest" network has also disappeared.
What do I need to do to correct this problem?

You must reset the TC to factory and start over. The TC simply remembers too much from the previous setup to work in the new one.
If your new router is going to take the router role, then the TC will have to be bridged and you will lose your Guest wireless.. the way around this is to use the Verizon router as your guest wireless and the TC as your main wireless.
The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel.. add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Factory reset Gen 5
Hold in reset for about 5sec until the status light flashes quickly.
If your AirPort Time Capsule still doesn’t respond, do a similar reset to the Gen1-4.
Unplug your AirPort Time Capsule .. hold in reset and power the TC back on.. without releasing the reset.. wait until status led flashes rapidly.

• Cannot connect to the secure network but can to the guest network

I have three computers in my home, all Apple. One is an iMac with 10.5 installed, another is a powerbook g4 17" with 10.5 installed and the third is an old titanium powerbook g4 15" with 10.4 installed. All of them have the newest versions of software.
I just bought a new time capsule and that has the newest firmware upgrade installed. I set the time capsule up with a secure WPA Personal network and a guest network with no password. I can connect to the secure network on the iMac and the 17" powerbook but the titanium powerbook cannot even see the secure network or connect to it if I enter it and put in the correct password. However the titanium powerbook can see and connect to the guest network.
Please help, I need to be able to print from the titanium powerbook to an ethernet printer connected to the time capsule.
I've tried adding a wireless client with no password in airport utility thinking I could connect the titanium powerbook that way and that does not work either.

Actually I have figured it out. I guess the titanium powerbooks cannot do WPA encryption, only WEP but I cannot choose WEP in the airport utility nor do I want to. I did find a work around though.
In airport utility I went to the base station menu and clicked on "equivalent network password" and it shows the WPA password and then something called "WPA Pre-Shared Key". The key is a 64 character password but I tried it on the titanium powerbook and it worked!
