Scheduling SecureErase of Free Space

I would like to schedule an automatic (daily) run of Disk Utility's Secure Erase Free Space. How do I do this?
I did find this command:
sudo diskutil secureErase freespace 1 <diskname>
Thanks.

Hi, HGG. Welcome to the Discussions.
A word of caution concerning Secure Erase Free Disk Space. I would not use that function without first:
1. Assuring the disk in question was free of directory corruption via Disk Utility > Verify Disk. If the directory is corrupted, space considered "free" could actually be occupied by files.
2. Having a full backup of the disk in question. This is a worthwhile prophylactic step that should be relatively straightforward if you've implemented a comprehensive Backup and Recovery solution. For advice on my backup and recovery solution, see my "Backup and Recovery" FAQ.
Good luck!

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
    Start with visits to:     OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
                                      The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
                                      The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
                                      The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
                                      Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.

If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
    Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
        drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • TS4272 erase free space stuck on creating temporary file

I upgraded to 10.7.4 and followed instructions in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4272
At step 9 Disk Utility is stuck on 'creating temporary file' for the last 24 hours. I have canceled and tried more than once.

This may be a problem with Disk Utility on your boot drive. Try rebooting to the Recovery HD and using Disk Utility on that partition (it should appear in the OS X Tools menu). You might also try running a disk verification and repair to ensure the filesystem and partition structure are intact.
Alternatively you can also bypass the disk utility application by using the Terminal to erase free space, which can be done with the following command:
sudo diskutil secureErase freespace 0 disk0s2
Note that while the device "disk0s2" is commonly the boot drive for systems with a single hard drive, this may be different for you system. Check the device by opening Disk Utility and getting information on your boot volume, and you should see the proper device name listed as "device identifier."

  • Wiping free space on Lion using Disk Utility Erase Free Space

    I'm using Lion (OS X 10.7.3) on a late 2011 MacBook Pro.
    FileVault is active.
I tried to erase free space on my HD using Disk Utility. It started by creating a temporary file and presented me with an indeterminate indicator-bar (one that looks like a barber pole). Activity Monitor showed an average CPU utilization of 2% by Disk Utility but disk activity was normal and usage stayed constant.
I left this process on for about twelve hours but Activity Monitor showed nothing new and the DU indicator-bar stayed indeterminate with Creating Temporary File.
I tried to skip this DU process and was presented with another indeterminate bar: Skipping. Again, AM showed nothing new so I force-quit DU and used sudo find / -type f -size +500M to see if any temporary files were created. I did not find any new files.
I rebooted and tried it from the terminal: sudo diskutil secureErase freespace 1 /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD. The result was the same: No progress.
BTW, if you run the above command, make sure you include the freespace portion. If you don't, diskutil will happily start securely erasing the entire disk.
Not being able to wipe free space using DU may have something to do with FileVault being active. Can someone confirm this?
What I love about working on a Mac is I have a Unix-based computer that I can tinker with. So I was able to wipe free space manually: dd if=/dev/urandom of=~/DELETEME followed by srm -s ~/DELETEME.
    Hope this helps someone.

Why we don't mention such terminal commands around here.

  • Automatically erase free space

    Hi,
I know how to use the disk utility to erase the free space on my drive.  I was wondering if there was a way to have OSX perform the erase free space operation automatically once a month or once a week.  Thanks for your help.

Run as a launcd (set to run once a week or month):
If you need info on launchd, in Terminal, man launchd, man launchd.plist
For a GUI launcd editor, see Lingon 3
To run secure erase from Terminal, See: Securely erase free space from Terminal
("Or you’re really paranoid, and would like to schedule a task (using cron or launchd) that regularly erases the free space on your drive.")
("Warning! It’s critically important that you include the freespace portion of that command. If you don’t, diskutil will happily start securely erasing the entire disk, instead of just the free space! Yes, that’s a Really Bad Thing, especially because it will be securely erased, meaning there’s no chance you’ll be able to recover the data. “With great power comes great responsibility.”)

  • Trying take whole offline db backup : Error no free space

    Hi,
In our Quality system I am trying take whole offline db backup ( with out redo logs). In the log file found the error saying there is no free space in the Drive:I:\orace\SID\sapbackup.minimum 27246.161mb( i think it is 27GB) required. But actually  total drive (I) space is 59.5GB and free space is 59.3GB. Suggest me how to resolve this.

one more thing... our QAS db is running in No Archive log mode. In db12 I do observe that overview of redolog files not yet backed up are 300.when I schedule only redolog backup in DB13 i am getting error message no offline redolog files found for processing. but in db12 showing 300redo log files. How can I take redo log backup. Is this bcoz of db is in Noarchive log mode. plz suggest.  In initsid.ora file   parameter is showing logarchive_start= true. but in SQL> i queried the log_mode , i got  Noarchive log. Is there any way to change the db  to Archive mode.( if we bring db from open status to mount , we can change the db log mode) without downing the SAP.

You can take the backup on  External Backup device like Tape Or Disk. To do so you have to change the below parameters in init<SID>.sap profile file.
    backup_type = offline
    backup_dev_type = Disk (Default---> Tape)
    backup_root_dir = <Path For Backup Directory>  (Default --->$SAPDATA_HOME/sapbackup)
    OR Only Change the parameter
backup_root_dir =Give <drive:\directory> path on which the required sapce is available. (Default --->$SAPDATA_HOME/sapbackup)

As your databse is running on No Archive Log Mode (As per SAP Best Pactices your database should run in archive log mode) the offline redolog files are not generated so dont worry about this error.
Experts please correct me if I am wrong.

  • Hard Disk free space lick after system restore windows 8.1

I did a system restore and after that, the laptop was functioning slowly. I realised that the disk usage was spiking. Later I realised also that I was constanlty loosing free space from my hard disk without downloading anything or any action. I run the windows
performer recorder when the spikes occurs.Link in OneDrive https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=26DCEC24336471AC%21106  . Furthermore when the laptop is on idle the disk usage goes to 100%. Task manager shows that most of the usage is from svchost.exe(defragsvc).
(I dont think it is a scheduled act from windows to run defragging at the moment). What could be? Any advice?

    Hi,
From your recorder information, we could see these 5 process below take high disk space:
    WPRUI.exe
    System
    vprot.exe
    avgui.exe
    avgcefrend.exe
Since you run the Windows performance toolkit to trace the log, exclude WPRUI.exe and system. It seems you use AVG product.
I suggest you disable or uninstall them temporarily to check if the disk usage decrease.

  • R&R v4.31 & free space

Greetings! I've been using Rescue & Recovery v4.31 with my X220T successfully for a while. It stopped backing up last night & even the manual trigger this morning didn't work. While looking through the log file in c:\swshare there are entries that seem to state the cause of error:
    Sat Mar 03 11:04:21 2012 RescueRecovery: Backup failed. Free Space High=0x0000010A Low=0x66652000.
Interesting enough the X220T has a 320GB drive & the external drive R&R is backing up to is a 2TB drive that has about 1.01TB free.
So is something reporting the free space incorrectly? Or is the problem elsewhere?
    Thank you for your suggestions!
    Rob

    someotherguy,
I'm current away from homebase so I can't get listing from "view all backups" but I hadn't changed the default so I thought it was set at 5. I know I may have missed some but I have it scheduled to backup every weekend (overnight). I think the merge was fine b/c I saw these entry when the backup were *supposedly* successful (on couple occassions I went through a restore of a file as backup is only good if one can actually restore <g>):
    Sat Feb 25 01:46:11 2012 RescueRecovery: Running: C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\Rescue and Recovery\br_funcs.exe merge destination="G:\RRbackups\SZ\81240DD79951CB11-9B6ACD7F807BD70D" drive=C: pw=0 uuid=0 level=2
    Sat Feb 25 03:27:38 2012 RescueRecovery: Running: C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\Rescue and Recovery\br_funcs.exe merge destination="G:\RRbackups\SZ\81240DD79951CB11-9B6ACD7F807BD70D" drive=Q: pw=0 uuid=0 level=2
In retrospect now I understand that 'merge' was the root cause last year too as incrementing that max number was the temp workaround.
When I get back to homebase I'll get the list of backups kept by R&R. Looking again at the rr log it seems like I restarted on Nov. 19th after the prior incident & did backups on the following dates: 11/26, 12/3, 12/10, 12/18, 12/25, 12/31, 1/8, 1/14, 1/21, 1/28, 2/4, 2/11, 2/17, 2/25, 3/2 (failure starts).
If zipping up the *whole* swshare will still help to uncover why the backups get corrupt (leading to merge failure) please let me know. If there are no PII in that directory then I can zip the folder & put in dropbox.
Thank you for your continued help!

  • Where did my free space go?!

Thanks to the HardStat widget, I looked at the free space on my drive last night, and I have less than 3 GB of free space left (verified with Get Info and Disk Utility). The problem is, I should have 25 GB or so! I got info on all of the root folders and added up their sizes, and even used my sad UNIX skills to navigate to the root and do a "ls -l -S -h" (thank you man ls) to see if there was something invisible and huge.
I've repaired my permissions twice, and ran a "Verify Disk" in Disk Utility. What am I missing? The only changes I've made in the past few days is setting up a scheduled backup in Carbon Copy Cloner (which ran twice without a problem), and installing Virex last night (which is about to be uninstalled). Help!!!!!
    PowerBook G4 12 1.5GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Carbon Copy Cloner if not allowed to complete its backup uses temporary space in the /Volumes/ folder to make its backup. See this thread for some suggestions:

  • Strange calculation of free space

    Hi!
I can't understand how size of free space is calculated.
    For example:
in my mailbox i have 3 folders
    Incoming  40.4 Mb
    Sent 13.1 Mb
    Junk 302 Kb
    In total about 55 Mb
but in Statistic writtent, that ocupied 161.7 Mb
Same situation3 with Documents and Application data:
    My Measures  252.5 Mb
    Mail                160.1 Mb
    Pages              22.6 Mb
    Numbers          14.6 Mb
    Keynote           13.4 Mb
All other in sum less than 1 Mb
In total should be less than 500 Mb
ps: I deleted all photos and turned off PhotoStream.
    How to solve this problem?

I have the same issue. I have just 68.5MB of documents in iCloud and it says it's full. I tried to delete photos from photo stream. I have no backups in iCloud and I don't sync my mail to iCloud.

  • HT1284 Do I need to reformat my external hard drive before I backup to it?  It shows very little free space when in fact it is empty.

I am new to Imac.  I want to use an external hard drive to backup to but the drive shows very little free space when in fact it is empty.  Do I need to reformat it and, if so How?  Thanks

    What is the external disk?
Is it new?  If so, maybe it has a Windows file system on it (FAT, exFAT, or NTFS).  If so then reformat to "HFS+ Journaled".
What backup utility are you using?  TimeMachine, Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper, etc...?  If the external is suppose to be bootable because you are using a cloning backup (CCC or SuperDuper), then it is also important that the disk partition table be GUID.
You can find out this information via Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility, select the disk (not volume on the disk) and the partition time will be shown at the botton of the window.   Now Select the volume and it will tell you how the file system on the disk is formatted.
Also do you want to leave room for a recovery partition on the external disk?  Then repartition it with a small (2GB) partition that can hold a bootable recovery partition that you can setup via the Apple "Recovery Disk Assistant" which can be downloaded from Apple.

I was dual booting Windows 7 and Mountain Lion. Through Disk Utility, I removed the Windows 7 Partition and expanded the HFS+ partition to encompass the entire hard drive. However, the Logical Volume Group does not think that I have that extra free space. The main problem is that I cannot resize my partition. I am wanting to dual boot Ubuntu with this. Any ideas? It's more likely a failed Erase Free Space, which creates a huge temporary file; that's why it looks like you have no more available drive space. You can recover from this. See these links

  • Problem with game and free space

I just installed a game, The Sims 2 and everytime I try and play it it says that I need to "free up some space on your local disk and relaunch the Sims 2". However I have 50G free space and sometimes it will load. Does anyone know what I should do?

Hi sarah, welcome to macbook forum,
uninstall your sims2, repair permission and optimize your HD using ONYX or machelpmate.
    reinstall your sims2, repair permission.
    Good Luck.
