Scheduling Software & System Updates

Because of ISP issues, I need to schedule all system and software updates on all our Macs to occur between 2am and 6am. Can someone explain how I can do that? I know I can schedule the updates to occur, daily, weekly or monthly, but I actually need to specify the time of day that occurs.
Thanks!

there is no very user friendly way to do this but it can be done.
the following terminal command will download all available updates and put them in your Downloads folder.
softwareupdate -d --all
so what you need to do is this.
1. turn off automatic software update in software update system preferences.
2. make a cron or a launch daemon to run the above terminal command periodically at the time of your choosing. to make a launch daemon I recommend using lingon http://tuppis.com/lingon/
have the daemon execute the above command.
The daemon will only run if the computer is not asleep at the scheduled time so you might want to set it to wake/start shortly before that. this is done in system preferences->energy saver->schedule. or just keep the computer on overnight.
to install the updates once they are downloaded double-click on the pkg files and follow the instructions.

  • Fingerprint software System update --

    Hi.  I've got the thinkvantage fingerprint software 5.8.2.4462 installed on my R61.  It works fine.  But System Update keeps telling me that there is no fingerprint software installed, and directs me to install a 5.6 version.
    Anyone have any ideas how to fix this?
    Thanks --

    Hi
    Well, I have no idea on how to fix this, but I'm having exactly the same problem on my T61.
    It seems that there is a bug in System Update that doesn't recognizes correctly the Fingerprint Software.
    Thanks for any help.

    The amount of RAM is not dependant on the operating system. It is all about the model of you Mac.
    10.6.8 is the version of OS X that is installed on your system. It has no real baring on the amount of RAM that CAN be installed.
    Personally I have never had good luck with Corsair RAM. I have always had good luck with Crucial and Kingston.

  • There should be a new System Update like good old Software Installer

    I believe that there was once a program called Software Installer that was replaced by System Update. I liked the old one because of its clear layout and information: There was a column with software installed, column with current version and column with most up-to-date version of the software.Then you had checkboxes to indicate which programs you want to be updated, check them and start the update and it worked fine. In fact Productivity center still uses similar dialog for installation
    What I don't like about System update:
    1. Half of the time the Package server is unavailable. Everybody who ever used System Update knows that.
    1a. While the package server is unavailable the packages (I mean software install files) are available through tthe software.
    2. Dowloading 400kb of update list (or whatever) takes forever. At least its the longest 400 kb I've seen on my internet connection. This is especially ridiculous when you can just go to support website and check the updates yourself in seconds. Why can't System Update just comunicate with the website. It serves the same purpose and?
    3. you can't use any of the information from the previous session: I have downloaded graphics driver and it is on the hardrive but it will install only after System update connects to database. I can install it manually but couldn't system update display it as some sort of avaible file?
    4. There are four tabs to display my 3 updates, couldn't it all fit in one window? Also I have to expand the view to see my current and up-to-date version of software. I just click to install and I never notice which version was installed actually. Later when having problems I can't tell which version of software I'm having problems with.
    5. Sometimes updates just dissapear. I once uninstalled Access Connections and since then System Update never showed it as an available update.
    The way I see it the System Update software should rewritten almost fully. There is no way that the software that is suppose to help you update the system is slower and less reliable than a user writing down the updates, downloading and installing them through the website.
    Having that said I'm not totally negative, for example it is a great  feature is that an update is unatended for a group of updates. Yet it seems that System Update is somehow on the worng track.

  • Xperia z1 Problem AFTER system update to latest software 14.3.A.0.681

    Hello people, First of all let my just say that I am new into the ''smartphones world'' so please excuse my queries if they proof to be 'obvious' to you! I have carried out a system update to my Xperia Z1 phone yesterday (Android 4.4.2. kitkat, latest available software 14.3.A.0.681). The update seem to have been correctly performed. However I have since encounter the following issues/problems with my phone and do not know how to fix them: 1) First of all my phone will no longer rotate...why is this? Is this related to the update?? Pictures/photos can no longer rotate and also phone screen does no longer rotate! Why is this..? 2) Second the 'Notifications Bar' structure has changed : is this also the result of the update or can I do something in settings to fix it and make it as before? When I scroll dawn the notifications bar, the icons are no longer displayed at the top line but are instead spread underneath BUT this is AFTER I press 'Quick settings'. 3) Battery signal icon has changed completely: no lines included inside icon to show usage but instead usage %age is now displayed. Also, when I charge my phone, there is no icon flashing as before and now lights flashing.. 4) Also when I want to use the phone after it has remained unused for sometime it states 'swipe to unlock' and makes a 'funny' note upon performance of the act: this was not the case before.. Can you please help me with the above? I am freaking out because I am excited with my new phone and would love to make full use of it properly but it is a bit hard for me since I have no clue how to fix issues/problems appearing every now and then since I am new into these things.. Thanking you in advance

    Hi there,
    I think you have fixed your 1st issue.
    2) Yes, Kitkat has changed the Notification Bar structure. Its a bit annoying, but to get around it you can use Widgets - Tools and select the Icon, such as WIFI to be placed on your home screen to avoid multiple clicks. You cant do anything in the settings to make it like before.
    3) Battery Signal Icon - Again a Kitkat update has done that. The good thing is that it has enhanced Battery life considerably.
    4) I am assuming you are stating about the "sound note" it makes when you swipe in. Thats again a Kitkat feature and you can get rid of it though Sound settings if you dont like it.
    Reality is that Kitkat runs very well on Google Nexus 5. Apart from that it has issues on every other Android power Smartphone out there. I also own a Nexus 4 who recently got upgraded to Kitkat and compared it with Nexus 5. Was not impressed to be honest.
    As of my upgrade on Z1, I have been facing Volume issues. When I play a video the volume is minimized for some reason. Pause and play again and it goes to Normal. I have to reboot it sometimes to play normally. It also takes ages to connect to my 3G provider, whereas previously it was fast enuf. I hope the next upgrade will fix those issues.

  • System Update - scheduling updates

    I have a Lenovo SL500 and have System Update installed. I would like to schedule update automatically with System Update, and was led to believe this could be done. Indeed, the "Help" contains a topic, "Scheduling updates". This topic tells me to "Click *Schedule Updates* on the left menu". However, I do not see "*Schedule Updates*" on the left menu.
    My left menu, in System Update, comprises the following items:
      * Welcome
      * Get new updates
      * Install deferred updates
    Advanced:
      * View installation history
      * Restore hidden updates
    I have ThinkVantage System Update 3 installed, version 3.14.0024. This is on Windows Vista Home Basic.
    What gives? Why can I not see "*Schedule Updates*", and/or how do I get it to appear?

    This is a mistake of TVSU.  Hotkeys 3.87 isn't for your T530.  Please ignore it while we fix the mistake on our side.
    As for APS, it will install on SSD system but it doesn't provide any benefit.

    In the Nokia Software Recovery Tool, what is your 7-letter code (Nokia Product Code)? No Windows computer or USB: The same code is printed on your phone. That code determines your firmware variant which determines your current version. We can check together whether you have the correct variant, only with that code.

    If you get a pop-up message asking to update Firefox or plugins or scanning for malware then such a message is likely a scam and you should never respond to such an alert to avoid getting infected with malware.
    *Only update Firefox via "Help > About" or by downloading and installing Firefox from the Mozilla server and never via a pop-up or link on a web page.

  • CSA 4.0 hosts not accepting Scheduled Software Update

    I have a few CSA 4.0 hosts which are members of a group that has a scheduled software update attached to it. Even though there is a 5.0 upgrade scheduled, the hosts show the following.
    Product information: Cisco Security Agent Version 4.0.3.716
    Software: Agent is running the latest software
    I have removed the hosts, re-added the hosts, created a new group and a new scheduled update.
    Any suggestions?

    OK, so the polling interval of the host(s) match what the group has, the update is scheduled for the group and the MC still doesn't show an scheduled or available\needed update for those particular hosts.
    There are a few reasons this might be so:
    #1 the hosts is running an unsupported OS platform (XP SP3).
    #2 is sometimes hosts won't accept an update schedule if they are in test mode AND the original group the agent kit put them in to is gone.
    #3 is a CSA version mismatch, the version on the host doesn't exist on the server (but I think you ruled that out).
    Not much else I can suggest without actually sitting in front of it.

  • HT4623 I don't have a button that says 'system update' how do I download the latest software?

    I dint have a button that says system update so I am still using the software from when iPad 2 first came out. Can anyone help?

    The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
    Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11). You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
    Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes (on iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC), and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button
    Updating to iOS 5+ : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972
    Your iPad will be updated to iOS 6.1 (which is the only version that is 'signed' by Apple for it).
