School iPads

I got reseaved an iPad from school a few weeks ago and they have downloaded certain apps for me to use in class onto the devise. I want to put my own apple ID on it and not use the school given one. Many kids have already done this freely. My question is, can I change my apple ID (to mine) and still receive updates for the apps from the school ID?

Yes. You will still receive updates for all the apps you have on the device. You just have to enter your password.

You can create a new Apple ID and password for the iPad but none of the content downloaded using the Apple ID associated with the four devices will be available on the iPad.

It's not possible to use two passwords with one Apple ID.

  • I have set up our school ipads to be supervised by Apple Configurator and am using VPP to buy apps.  I now find the supervised ipads do not allow the pupils to download photos or movies etc. Any suggestions would be great please.

I have set up our school ipads to be supervised by Apple Configurator and am using VPP to buy apps. I did this initially as our school internet connection was stopping us from being able to update the IOS and our County was offering a managed system, Lightspeed, which took control of every device in school which proved very expensive.  I now find the supervised ipads do not allow the pupils to download photos or movies etc. As we frequently use the ipads as cameras this is causing us a problem. We have a school imac that I use to keep the devices updated with Apple Configurator (not connected to our network), and this doesn't seem to offer any solution to download them either.  I was told there was a setting in Apple Configurator to allow other computers to download from supervised devices, but I can't see it anywhere.  I am very new to this so any advice or help would be greatly appreciated please.

I assume you are wanting to take the photos and movies off the iPads?
Connect the iPad to a Apple computer. Open "Image Capture". Any photos or video can me imported to the desktop or other location on your computer.
I had this same problem last year and as we have no wifi I asked lots of people at Apple what I could do - no one provided this answer (a little unbelievable!). If you have wifi using something like dropbox would be an easier solution.
    Hope this helps

    Heya Katie!!
So, the article you have there, HT4895, is pretty good. Just look at the FAQ section of it.
But basically, you will want to create a backup on your computer through iTunes...Just plug your current iPad into it and make sure your iPad and iTunes are logged in with the same Apple ID. At that point, just create a backup.
When you get your new iPad, and before you plug it in or set it up, follow the directions in this link to change your Apple ID. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5621?viewlocale=en_US
Once you have that done, plug your new iPad into your computer to sync up with iTunes. Follow the directions for Restore from Backup and it should bring all that info back to your new iPad.
And changing your Apple ID email info will allow you to have your own!!! This should solve all your issues and GL!!!

I had my schools iPad connected to my laptop on iTunes and then i looked at my iPad and i didnt have any of my apps. How do i get them back?

U must have synced with your library on your laptop thereby erasing the school apps , the only way to get them back on is by taking it back to school and get them to reinstall them back on using there library.

  • Since iOS 8.3 upgrade school iPads need to reset very often

Since iOS 8.3 upgrade school iPads need to reset (holding down home and power button) very often as they do not turn on. iPads are charged at the time.
Anyone know how to fix this? It is making life at the school quite difficult.

I take that back, music is messed up too!  Some of the "default" playlists, such as "recently added" , "Recently played" and "Top 25 Most Played" are listed on iTunes and were always on my phone... but since iOS 8.3... they are gone... Still in iTunes, but not on device.

  • Trying to create itues account for children's school ipad and says does not meet min age.  Tried to go back and fix bday as was put in incorrectly and still says "does not meet min age".  How do I fix this?

I'm trying to create a new apple account for my daughter's school ipad.  She put in her bday incorrectly and said "does not meet age requirements".  We went back and put in her correct date (over 13) and still says "does not meet age requirement".  How do I fix this??

The old rule of thumb was to keep 10-12 GB free. Any lower than that and you will start to have trouble. I was very close to that for a long time and never had any complaints. Now, Lion "encourages" 20% free space (on my newer 250 GB drive) so I try to keep it with more than 50 GB free.
Do you still have the original memory in that machine too? The metal plate you have to remove in the battery compartment also provides access to the RAM. Your machine will take 2 GB of RAM, possibly 3. You definitely want to max that out too.
Regardless, you definitely need a new hard drive. When Apple switched to PC components, they had to take a quality hit. These 2.5" notebook hard drives are not very reliable. I'm surprised your hard drive hasn't died by now. I usually get a new hard drive with every major OS upgrade. A $ 50 investment every couple of years is no big deal.
Unfortunately, you (and I) suffer from being an early adopter in 2006. Those 32-bit machines only accept 2 GB RAM (maybe 3) and are only 32-bit so they can't be upgraded to Lion. Because of this limitation, you won't see as dramatic an improvement as you would with a 2007 machine. If you run more than a couple of applications, your hard drive is always going to have to be doing some VM work. My 2006 machine has even lost its bluetooth. I gave it to my brother. My very similar 2007 Macbook is still running great.
So, you must get a new hard drive because your old one is likely on death's door. If you don't have at least 2 GB - get it. If you can't afford a new machine, you might want to consider an SSD. That might help mitigate your RAM limitations. You can spend from $ 100 to $ 350 and get a dramatic speed improvement.

  • Whats better for college/grad school- ipad 3 with keyboard or mac book air? 11 inch

whats better for college/grad school- ipad 3 with keyboard or mac book air? 11 inch

Nobody can tell you which one is best for you, it's a personal preference. However, here are a few factors you might want to take into consideration:
1-They're two different devices that serve different purposes. The way you take notes in an iPad is different than the way you would on a MBA. On the iPad, with apps like Evernote and Notability you can take more complete notes than with a MBA. You have the option to have audio notes, write with a Stylus, make diagrams by hand to explain/relate concepts easily. With the external keyboard (for that I'd recommend using the Apple Wireless Keyboard with the InCase Origami Workstation) you could type just as fast as you would on a MBA and format the text just like you would on the MBA. However, for bigger (possibly partner) papers, the MBA would help you. You could start the paper on the iPad without any issues (using Pages or even Evernote) but you'd need a laptop/computer to finalize the project.
2-Portability wise, they're both incredibly light. The iPad is somewhat smaller = lighter but with the keyboard they're about the same. The fact that with the ipad + keyboard combo you can take out the keyboard only when you need it, for me, is an advantage be ause when I don't want to use it, it's not in the way. For others, it's a disadvantage because you have to carry two items instead of one.
3-The iPad needs a computer to be updated, synced, etc. So if you don't have one, definitely get the MBA. The MBA can work as a standalone computer. The iPad needs to be synced to an iTunes library in a computer.
4-MBA let's you access all websites and most file types. If one of your classes requires you to go to the Browser and see a Flash enabled page, the iPad would not be of much help. Same goes for any programs you might need to install. On the MBA you'll most likely be able to do so. On the iPad, chances are there won't be an app for that.
5-If you already have a MBP or any other laptop, I'd go for the iPad. If/when the iPad falls short(because of the limitations mentioned above) you can use the laptop. And in the mean time, use the iPad for everything else. That way you get the best of both worlds.
6-Studying (reading, highlighting, annotating) is easier and more intuitive on the iPad. The iPad is great for reading, combine that with the fact that you can leave comments/notes just like you would on a physical piece of paper, and you've got the best way to learn IMO.

  • Sync GarageBand projects across school iPads

I'm a music teacher in an elementary school that just purchased 50 iPads to use in the classrooms. I have a lot of ideas for music projects, but there is one concern I have regarding the use of Garageband.
I would like to use GarageBand to compose songs over the course of many classes. At the moment, I'm planning on talking to the IT guy so that I may reserve the same 5 iPads every week, and each group can continue working on their locally saved project each week. The problem with this is if another teacher grabs one of those iPad before me or something happens to it, then one group won't be able to continue working.
Is there a way to sync a project to the cloud or export it so that I can grab any of the schools iPads each week and be able to access/import the projects regardless of which iPad they were working on the week before.
As these are school iPads, their functionality is a bit limited. But the IT guy is open to suggestions.  Any ideas on how to organize this?
    Thank you!

Thanks for your response. I had tried this before but thought it wasn't working. On the master image I had created a web clip and placed it on the iPad dock and then restored via backup to a new iPad. The web clip on the new iPad was not placed on the dock. Not a big deal, at least all the apps are organized correctly. Thank you.

  • How do I delete a student's iCloud account from a school iPad?

My school has iPads that we check out to students. They are all set up with the school's Apple ID. I've had a student set up her iCloud account on one of the iPads using her OLD Apple ID and now can't remember the password to remove it. The only thing set up using the student's appleID is the iCloud account. Is there a way to remove the student's iCloud account from the iPad?
The only things I'm allowed to select in the iCloud section of settings is the terms and conditions and the delete account. Everything else is unselectable. When i click "terms and conditions" I get the message: unable to connect to server. When I select "delete account" it wants the password that can't be remembered.
    Thanks for your help.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4515
If the student can't remember her Apple ID, she'll need to try to recover it, either by this web page:
    https://iforgot.apple.com
or by calling Apple Support and asking to speak with Account Security. There's no way you can get past the Activation Lock without that student's Apple ID and password. If she can't recover the account and remove the iPad from her iCloud account, you may be able to contact Apple Support and with proof that the school owns the iPad there may be something Apple can do, though I've not confirmed that.
    Regards.

  • Why does everyone else on their school ipad have access to the App Store and basically anything they want? Why is it that I don't have access to any of that?  How do I get access to that stuff?

Ok I don't know why in the world everyone else has access to the App Store and almost anything they want. Guess what I have access to? Yea that's right I have access to nothing that they have! I believe that their iPads are glitching and that might be how they got access to them! I hate how I don't have any access when I don't have access to anything that they have access to! They have almost no restrictions on their iPads and I have all the restrictions that the school sets!

I don't know if you're looking for us to offer a solution to you?  We can't.  If your school has set restrictions on your iPad, you need to discuss this with your school system admin.

  • School iPad - Prevent student from sending PDF in iBooks

I am desperate to disable the option of sending PDF files from inside our Student's iPad device.
We badly need to prevent our cadets from sending our Aviation Charts & documents (that we developed in PDF format) to external entities.
If only there is an option in the restriction menu to disable such option. The thing is every student has their school gmail account in their iPad.
These security issue really poses a big threat to our iPad implementation.
Hoping for such feature to be available in the future specially for companies and school like us.

if this is a feature you would like to see implemented then you need to let Apple know as these are user-to-user forums that Apple does not monitor. http://www.apple.com/feedback/

  • HT4865 What's the best way to protect student info and work saved to iCloud from their school iPads?

I'm doing some prep work for next year's implementation of iPads in some of the lower elementary classes at my school. I've read about the hack-ability of iCloud lately in the online articles. What was happening in Norway is exactly what could be happening in classrooms next year if certain security procedures aren't put in place. I would be grateful for any suggestions that you might have on how to beef up security for the students' work and info, and if you have any suggestions about the best ways to learn with iPads with children in grades K-4 (4-10 years old).
