School secondary website

Hey Guys, Set up Mac Server on a windows network had never set up a Mac server before but after a few days everything was working perfectly. The school has there main site, and they want me to set up the Powermac G5 as a web server for another small club the school runs The server did have 512mb of ram but I upgraded it to 4 gig, It has enough hard disk space.
My issue is I dont know much about website hosting, I have purchased a domain name etc , is the server capable of doing this ? if so is it easy enough ? and could I use I-web ?
Cheers
Craig

You're in the Mac OS X Server discussion area and you mention "server", which implies one of the boxes here is running Mac OS X Server configuration. This detail more central here than the particular hardware underneath Mac OS X Server, though I'd expect a G5-class box to be able to run a school-level web server. (Network bandwidth, the numbers of hits and what amounts to the load can and will vary.)
Mac OS X Server includes integrated web services and many other capabilities, and which Apple maintains for you.
If you decide to fire up a Mac OS X client box and load a web server on your own (eg: MAMP), you'll have to maintain those boxes. As previously mentioned.
The Xserve hardware does have advantages in this environment around its remote management capabilities, but you can load Mac OS X Server onto most any Mac box.
(And if you're not serving disk storage via SMB or AFS to more than 10 clients, you can go with the 10-client license.)
Regardless, if you have a Mac OS X Server box (and of any sort of box) already, I'd use Apache virtual hosts and load and maintain the extra web site there. Even if you're maintaining your own Apache environment on a Mac OS X client box that is being run as a "server", I'd still use virtual hosts. Fewer hosts is easier to manage than more hosts.
And recognize that if your systems are externally accessible, your web server(s) will be targeted. Mine get attacked quite regularly. How to defend your web servers and such is a whole 'nother discussion.

The school's website recognizes the new certificate but does not accept it. School's tech support suggest to revert to an older version of Firefox. How do I do that?

Try to remove the old certificate. Also check if there are intermediate certificates used and stored.

After upgrading to firefox 8, I can't use many of the functions on my schools website like opening the textbook and sending emails. I spoke the school's tech. support & they informed me that my version of firefox was not compatible with their system. So, how do I install a previous version of firefox (firefox 6 to be exact)?

You can download Firefox 6.0.2 for Mac OS X 10.5 from ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/6.0.2/

  • Can't Open Word Documents from my School's Website

I am in a class that requires me to download & print off worksheets from the school's online "blackboard" website. My teacher also has a Mac, and she uses Microsoft software for Mac. Since I use Pages instead, can I not open these documents? I also can't open PowerPoint presentations on my MacBook, I am sure this for the same reason.
If anyone could help me out with this, I would really appreciate it.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Two things you may not have done.
First, use the Mac OS 10.6.2 combo update. This fixes a problem with the Hoefler Text font that is not fixed using the delta update (10.6.1 > 10.6.2).
Second, make sure your iWork applications are updated. For iWork '09 it's Pages 4.0.2 & Numbers 2.0.2. iWork '09 has since had update 3. If you're not running the latest versions & Software Update says your software is up to date, make sure the applications are where the installer initially put them. The updaters are very picky. If the location is not where the updater is programmed to look or if the folder doesn't have the name the updater looks for, it will not work. The applications cannot be renamed or moved. They must be in the iWork '09 folder in Applications. That iWork folder must be named iWork '09. If it doesn't have the '09 Software Update won't find them & the updaters won't work.

  • G580 WIFI Problem ONLY at school (redirected website for wifi password)

    Hi all,
    I recently purchased a lenovo G580 laptop; windows 8
My laptop wifi works perfectly when I am at home or connected to any normal wifi.
It does not work when I am at school which typically once you connect to the school's wifi, it opens up a web broweser asking for your usename and password to get compelte access. (figure 1- from my other laptop)
My lenovo laptop cannot download this website, therefore I have no internet access at school since I cannot put my information inside. (figure 2- from lenovo laptop)
The problem is not my school's router because I have wifi connection on my other laptop here without any problems. Also the problem is not really the location/wifi of my lenova laptop because I can connect to my phone's personal hotspot when I am at school.
Simply, the problem is found when I cannot connect to my school's wifi because it requires me to download a site to put my information.
I have read other forums and try to figure it myself, however, I am very noobie when it comes to computers. So I appreciate a step-by-step instructions. For example, please provide links that I may need to download to update my driver.
I have called customer care, and I am not going to pay 100 bucks just to fix a simple problem. So i appreciate your time.

check whether you have set up your wifi settings correctly.(i mean 'servers' and login credentials ).

  • How can I go back to Fire Fox version 6 or 5 my school's website does not currently work with Fire fox 7

I just found out through my school that the online campus does not support Fire Fox 7. So I would like to go back to Fire Fox 6 which is what I had before. My school does say that it supports version 5, but 6 seemed to work just fine. Either way how do I go back to those versions? If you want the nitty gritty details, every time I attempt to send emails while logged into my campus account it won't send them. I don't want some stupid app or some crazy version where I have to have all of these accounts and stuff. I just want Fire Fox 6 or 5 back that's all.

    Hi Shero89,
Thanks for the answer.  I am not new to IOS software but I don't really ever bother with it, have discovered how little I take advantage of the i-phones capability, in reality I still only really use it to phone, text, check emails, listen to music and look on internet.  I'm not keen on jailbreaking it as I don't trust it to work so normally just update and leave it at that.  Only reason I wanted to downgrade was because the update had stopped my bluetooth working but Kilted Tim solved that problem for me so am now not interested in downgrading software.  I quite liked the things that IOS 5.1 gave me but wasn't happy with fact that bluetooth stopped working in car as it caused me problems.  One day I might try and work out exactly what I-phones can do but on the basis that it's a phone all I really want it to do is phone, if that bit works I'm happy.

  • Trouble with school website, javascripting

Hello, is there any one of you who can tell me how to solve the problem I experianced with Javascripting in Safari?
The school's website we use for our students use java for several actions. One of them is to upload a file to it, so students can use it. I discovered that these actions can not be performed with my (ohh great) new iPad. This means i have to find another computer to help my students.
Perhaps the solutions is already built in the upcoming update but i am not sure of that.
    Please help.

Javascript is not the same as Java. The two are completely different things.
The iPad Safari browser supports Javascript but not Java. There are no plans that I know of for the iPad to support Java in the future.
Note that there are Apps for the iPad which can be used to upload/download files to/from servers, for example, Goodreader can do this.

  • Problem with Firefox, it logs me out from websites after I restart

    Hello World!
I have a small problem. I restart my computer and after I open firefox, I notice that I am logged out of a website, for example, Facebook. (Not the only one, but one of some).
I have tried checking if I got any sites blocked under my Preferences, there are no Exceptions, the cookies do show up and everything, its the perfect scenario to actually work lol.
Then I tried checking the ArchWiki, if you recall this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fi … nformation it mentions something about deleting a file called cookies.sqlite, I've tried that and still no work. I've tried making a new profile and deleting the old one, and it still doesn't work.
I currently have no Addons installed  because I deleted my old profile and I am currently in a blank one. Only got a few bookmarks and stuff.
I  then ran out of ideas, I tried google, all I could find was something wrong with people using a script blocking addon, which currently I don't have. So does anyone have any idea what I could do to fix this?
Thank you very much you guys! Arch ROCKS!

Nope, that option is unchecked. The problem is that, that only happens to certain websites, for example gmail, facebook, and I just noticed that it also happens with my school's website. The rest it just seems fine.
I tried install Google Chrome yesterday as well just to check if it was Firefox giving me that problem and apparently the same thing happens as well. It's kinda weird, I mean, I usually don't have this problem in Windows.
Well, anyways, thanks for your reply!

  • I need to go back to firefox 3.6 for school, what steps do i need to do in order to get this done

i have FF 5 and need to get back to version 3.6 for school. how do i do this?

Install Portable Firefox 3.6.x to your hard drive for use at your school's website. <br />
    http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable/localization#legacy36
It won't affect your Firefox 5 installation, like a "regular" version will.

  • I can't open PDF's from websites!!!!

Please, I need help! So, I went to attesting.com and was having issues purchasing something from them, so I went to there technical requirements and uploaded their link for Adobe Acrobat Read X. I have a MAC version 10.9.4. It seemed everything was ok. Then I went to my school's website to print a form which is in PDF form and I get this ADOBE LOCKED THIS PDF. or something like that. It doesn't say it now. Now, when I try to open a PDF from a website it says BEFORE VIEWING PDF DOCUMENTS IN THIS BROWSER YOU MUST LAUNCHADOBE READER AND ACCEPT THE END USER AGREEMENT, THEN QUIT, AND RELAUNCH THE BROWSER. So, I've un-installed Adobe and reinstalled Adobe numerous times and I STILL CANNOT GET MY PDF's. I've NEVER had any issue before. Can anyone please help!?!?! I tried contacting Adobe and chatted with someone online and he said that he doesn't help support this issue since it's not something I've paid for. I'm so frustrated and mad! ugh! Any suggestions is much appreciated!

And I've also just realized I can't open PDF's at all. Tried exporting on of the PDF forms from my school website to my desktop and it won't open from my desktop either. It's saying it's empty.

I own a MacBook Pro (MAC OS X 10.6.8) that I purchased in 2011. I have never had a single problem before, but here very recently youtube, my school (FSU) website, and a few other random websites will not load images. At all. They just show a little blue box with a white question mark inside. I have tried emptying the catch, resetting safari, nothing works. Help? I need to be able to see the images on my.fsu.edu it's really important!

  • Certain websites WILL NOT load - Snow Leopard

    Hi,
I installed snow leopard a few weeks ago. I had to reset my wireless router to detect my "wireless network" automatically. Around the same time my school website would no longer load. On my public high school's website I access my work email, grading programs, and other important websites linked to the school. I cannot access this website form any computer in my home (including a desktop PC).
I never had this problem before installing snow leopard. Could it have done something to my wireless connection?
    The website is:
    http://www.haddonfield.k12.nj.us

    Is your router's firmware up-to-date?
The fact that none of your computers can access the site suggests a problem with the router itself.
Do you have a separate modem? If so, have you tried using any of the computers with just the modem to see if the page loads?

  • Dreamweaver website slideshow problems on Macs

A parent at the school where I teach has just created a website for us. She used Dreamweaver and photoshop to create it. There are some pages where there should be a looping slide show (that runs on its own). These slide shows work on PCs but not on Macs (it just stays on one photo on Macs). We've tried using Firefox and Safari on Macs with no success. For the slide show she "just added a timeline to the jpg image, changing the imagesource every 60 frames, that you can do in dreamweaver." Is there some way to fix this so it works on Macs?
    Here's the school's website: www.smash.smmusd.org
Thanks in advance for your help ...

    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Dreamweaver is probably generating some kind of JavaScript to do the image replacement, and this is probably going awry. I'm not seeing it on the home page though, so I can't tell what the problem is. Do I need to click on one of the links to see that page that's not working?
One way to fix it would be to use an animated GIF instead of image-swapping JPEG images with JavaScript.

  • OS X as a school server.

    Happy New Year!
Who of you all knows of a school's Website which implemented OS X server Intranet and Internet for students, staff but also parents?
Specially looking for school owned and BYOD, VPP, and Collaborative Software services like Calendar, Contacts, Mail and Messages.
It's what I'm doing on a test server but I wanted to show my school administrators, staff members, students and parents that it's also done somewhere else.
    Thanks,
    Francois.

Good approach.  Us in technology can sometimes lose sight of the value of these devices in the educational workflow.  At times, we get caught up in the perfection of the solution but this can disrupt the use of the product in the hands of the student and teacher.
Based on those numbers, you are not a one to one shop.  So device sharing will need to be investigated.  For the iPads, you could start as simple as Apple Configurator and supervision mode.  However, you may not have enough time between classes to checkin and checkout all the devices.  Once again, understanding the educational needs and use case is vital.
For the MacBooks, you can look at network homes to support the entire audience.  But, you need to analyze your wireless network and core network to make sure you have the bandwidth to server the load.  Likewise, a capacity study and I/O throughput analysis needs to be done to ensure that you can serve the load.
You are in a good position as spring is approaching.  You should be taking the next few months to define and test your implementation on a small scale.  Then once clarified, you will have the summer to implement and load test.
Sounds like a great project to sink your teeth into.
