Schools and Mac OS 9

Today I was called on a job to install some CD-ROM educational games onto the hard disk drive of several macs. To make it so that the students would be able to play the games from more than one computer I burned disk images of them to the hard drive (with DiskCopy). I do this all the time, and have done so with several disks on my own ibook. My Street Atlas USA CD-ROM launches everytime I click on its classic icon on my ibook, and my GME98 CD-ROM has to be opened first in the finder, and then the app can be opened.
The games I was installing had to be opened first in the finder and then the game could be played. Sadly the head lady found out what I was doing and insisted that I was doing it wrong, because CD's cannot be copied to hard drives, and that only 1 student can play them one at a time. I tried to explain to her what I was doing with DiskCopy, and to demonstrate to her that what I was doing does work, but she insisted on being ignorant, so I left, and the person that called me to the job called a lecture.
In some ways I miss old Mac OS 9. It was not as reliable as OSX, but it was a nice os. I noticed one of the macs had Timbukto Pro. Has anyone used this software and how good is it? I was thinking about buying a OSX version someday.
Oh and how would you have handled the above situation?
John

If were on staff at a school, I think it would be good to have a union. In many ways unions protect employees. But then again if I am a valuable asset, I may not need as much protection. I've worked at companies where I was a very very valuable asset to their tech team, and so firing me was always out of the question. I could show up late, and do so much that a disliked or new employee could never do and get away with.
And I've had to stretch myself in non techy fields living in Northern California and working at jobs were I was not a valuable asset. At such jobs it was easy to terminate me without notice. But its not like I enjoyed working at those places anways. At one job I was heavily overworked and underpaid. I worked like 5 24 hour shifts at a house, was given no overtime, they did not accomindate my religious convictions, and were abusive to me. And on top of that who likes changing 10-15 briefs a day for only $119 per day?
Well sicne I recently relocated to a large city, I can concentrate on the work I want to do, and work that I am good at. I am no longer living in a rural area, where Walmart is the largest employer. But then again if I move back to such an environment it was good that I have diversified my job skills in non techy areas, since techy jobs are hard to find if not impossible to find in such economies.

  • Is it possible for a mac to run across a Windows based server such as in a school, and still be able to access all networked folders? I have been told that macs can only read down a certain number of folders

Is it possible to run a mac on a windows based server? We have a server based on Windows 7 in our school, and our techies are reluctant to let me buy a mac as they say macs can only read a number of folders deep, which would preclude me from accessing shared folders on our servers. Is this true, and is there a way round this? I would eventually like to get a suite of macs, but because all our resources are on the server, I have to be able to access them.
    Thanks for any help,
    Mike

I have found that both Linux and Mac (unix) are capable of reading "deep" folders while win 32 will have issues, your it people are clearly wrong.  I run a network with both win/mac. And as long as the win servers/pc's that have shares are set to allow apple file sharing in their folder properties.   And the macs are set to allow smb there should absolutely no trouble with you accessing anything across the platforms, heck, from a Mac to a win pc on some occasions you don't even need to include a "domain" name to log on to, and you can create aliases and make your own shortcuts etc... So you don't have to manually connect each time you boot up etc... But that's all personal preferences I suppose.
All I can tell you is that, I do it on a daily basis managing a small business. So your answer is yes you can.

Hi, I have the Creative Cloud through my school and have it installed on my Mac, Can I install it on my PC as well or do I need an additional membership?

    Aaron,
That should not be an issue.  If you are using creative cloud, you can install the apps on your primary computer and one backup computer. You will have access to both the Mac OS and Windows versions, so if you have a Mac at home and a PC at work, for example, you can install your applications on both. See the product license agreements page for more information. Read more in the Creative Cloud FAQ

  • How should I give itunes autonomy to my children now that they are in high school and have used my Mac and my itunes account to buy music for years, including all gift cards given to them. They now both have their own computers.

When my children were younger, and needed more help and oversight, I had them purchase songs with my permission, often with gift cards that they had been given on various occaisions. Now, however, they both have laptops, they would like to split out "their" music and books, sync their Itouches to their own system, and I would love to have 9000 less Taylor Swift songs stored on my hard drive. Also, it seems that I can't set up independent Itunes accounts for them without a credit card, however they both get gift cards several times a year. A suggestion for this? It must happen to a lot of families. Thanks.

Unfortunately you cannot split (nor merge) items purchased with an AppleID.  I am not clear on what you will have to do to allow them continued access to their music on your account.  Apple no longer has DRM protection in its music but then I also hear people have all kinds of authorization issues when trying to synch so it sounds like they still keep restrictions on what you can do with the music when trying to move it about.  I'll let somebody more experienced with syncing answer this part.  You may have to authorize their computers and devices to your AppleID to allow them all functionality with the music.
Ideally you would have set them up with their own AppleIDs years ago but...

  • Can't Get MacBook Pro and Mac Pro to Network

I have a MacBook Pro (2008 - 2.5 Ghz. Core 2 Duo with 4 Gb of RAM running OS X 10.6.7) that I have been connecting to my Mac Pro (2005 - 2 2.66 Ghz Xeon with 20 Gb of RAM running OS X 10.6.7) through an Ethernet switch on my school's network. This has worked without a hitch for years, but when I upgraded to 10.6.7 recently, the MacBook and Mac Pro fail to network. On the MacBook Pro, the Mac Pro's icon doesn't show in the shared area, and on the Mac Pro, I can see the icon for the MacBook Pro, but when I click on the icon to connect, I get the message that "Connection Failed There was an error connecting to the server (name of my MacBook Pro). Check the server name or IP address, and then try again." I have tried a direct connect using the "Connect to Server" under the Go menu on both machines, using their IP addresses, but no luck. Is there something I need to re-set to get these two to talk again? I have other Macs on the same network that my MacBook and my Mac Pro can see, and both machines can connect to them. They just can't connect to each other.
Thanks in advance for any ideas you might have on  how to fix this.

I fixed the problem by re-setting the default values for my VirusBarrier X6 anti-virus program.

  • Want to use Creative suite on PC and Mac

My son bought the student edition creative suite last year and installed it on his PC, he has now got a Mac laptop for school and wants to use your program on his Mac what is the best way to go about this, do I need to buy him another program?

Serial numbers for standalone retail products are platform specific. You can run a platform swap or indeed will have to buy a second license if you want to keep using it on both ends.

We have 30 ipads at our school and it is great.  We are about 850 student on my school and everyone are using the ipads. One hour at the time. (we have a booking system.)
I teach music and are using Garageband. I need to find away were my students that are working on a project can export the files and save them somewhere, so when they 7 days later open Garage band can import there song with all the correct  midi-tracks. When I export the song to Icloud the song become an Mp4 file (I think).  And I can import the files via Icloude.
This is because too many times the song has been sabotages during the week
    Dan Sweden

    Dan,
your students could store their projects in iCloud, only you would continously have to change the AppleIDs of the iPads, so each student could store the songs with their own AppleID.  I don't think this will be feasable.
The other possibility would be to share the projects to iTunes and to download them to iTunes  on a Mac at the end of each lesson. Does your school have Macs? This will not work with PCs.
See this link:  GarageBand for iPad: Get answers fast http://help.apple.com/garageband/ipad/1.2/index.html#chsec12c387

  • Windows and Mac hostnames with Java.

    Hi,
I'm not sure if this is the correct board or not for this, but I'm really getting frustrated, and I'm sure it's something easy for someone who knows.
Anyway.. I'm working on some Java software for school, and I'm trying to get the program to run on my 2 machines (one is the MBP, and the other is a windows XP pc), but I'm having trouble having trouble finding one machine from the other (in either direction) because neither can seem to find the hostname of the other.
On my Mac, from the Sharing panel I have set my local hostname to david.local. On my windows box, my hostname is david. I can ping myself on each machine, but when I try to hit the other, the hostname can't be found.
Please help me figure this out. I know it has something to do with the naming, because I gotten this to work a couple of years ago for another project. Only.. it's been a while and I hadn't had to do it since then, so I've forgotten what I had to do back then to get it working.
Any help with be greatly appreciated!
    David

    Hi Rick,
I changed the Mac so it would be on Mshome (yes, I left it as the default in windows.. lol.)
    Rebooted both.. no dice.
A question about this though.. can I still connect to other networks? I take my computer to school, and I have never had to change this before, and everything had worked smoothly.
Oh! That reminds me. I can connect to shared folders on my Windows machine from my Mac with the Connect to Server from Finder. I do smb://david/<shared folder> and it all worked out just fine, without the workgroup being set. (Still works now, btw)
    Thanks,

  • My powerbook G4 is stuck on the grey blinking ? and mac face screen....

When I turn on my powerbook g4, 15 in, it does not not get past the first screen (just grey minus the loading apple). i've waited about 10 minutes with the grey screen and now all that is on the screen is the mac smiley and blinking question mark over a file folder. I have powered up and down multiple times, checked the battery, etc... and nothing seems to work. There also seems to be an issue with CD/DVD drive, its making a horribly loud clicking and vibrating noise on powerup. i do not have any cd's for this computer for a repair because i got it from school and im worried that if i bring it in for them to look at i will be in trouble....Can anyone offer some help?
    thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Can you tell us something about what was happening before you go to this point? In other words, was everything working normally, or did you notice anything unusual?
BGreg has suggested what you need to do to recover you boot volume. In the absence of an install disk or Disk Warrior I suggest you try starting up in Safe Mode. If that does not work, try the suggestion of the second poster using the method in Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck.
Please do post back with an update or further questions or comments.

  • Choosing between Mac Book and Mac Book Pro??

    Hi,
I need a laptop for school and to do a bit of Photoshop and HTML but i don't no wich Macbook should i choose. Here is why im confuse :
I saw this add of a Mac Book Pro 2.53 (320g 7500rpm-4gig RAM) with apple care for 2500$ new and sealed but im not sure if its what i needed.
On the other hand i tough of buying a bran new MacBook 2.4 (1749 cnd$) and upgrade the RAM to 4 gig wich will cost me 150$ + the apple care.
My question is wich one is better and would you trusted the buy a NEW used Mac Book Pro. The guy said that he has all the receipt and he's selling it because he want to buy a MacPro. Apple give im a new labtop because is older one has to many repair to do.
Awaiting for your comment/suggestion on what you would do.
    Tks

Well, I can only offer my advice as to what I would do. Everyone is different, but here it goes.
If you're not doing anything super intensive (HTML/Photoshop plus your usual web-browsing isn't too intensive) you'll have more than enough computer with the 2.4 MB (even without the RAM upgrade! But it can't hurt to do the upgrade if you're wiling to spend the money).
Personally I wouldn't want to take over someones laptop. Let me ask a few questions about the computer listed and some exchange rates.
2.53 MBP, is that the previous model, or the UniBody. And that $2500 is in Canadian I assume (because the new 2.66 UniBody is $2499 US). If it's the previous model it doesn't even appear to be much of a discount for being used.
My feelings are that the person is getting rid of the laptop for a reason. If they were 100% happy with the product, they wouldn't be looking to upgrade to a new computer.
I'd go with the 2.4 MB if I were you. I'm very happy with mine. It'll be enough computer for at least the next 4 years (if taken care of).
    Hope that helps. Cheers.
