SCI and RSM for Oracle 9i RAC

Hi gurus,
Could you please confirm if we can configure 2 or more SCI interconnects (for Private Interconnects) on a E15K cluster ?
This is for a High Availability requirement for Oracle 9i RAC. What i need to know is that,
Assume that i have configured 3 SCI Cards on NODE 1 and 3 SCI Cards on NODE 2. Sun Cluster 3.1 is configured on both nodes.
1) If i activate all the cluster interconnects on NODE 1 and NODE 2, will Oracle 9i RAC based traffic flow on all the 3 cards for EACH Node, thereby providing 3 gbps of bandwidth ?
2) What if there is a failure in one of the cards? will the other 2 continue to function, if failover mechanism is configured?
3) Do i need to do something special for Oracle to be enable to recognise that 1 card has failed and it needs to start transfering packets using the other 2 surviving cards?
These questions are assuming that it is an SCI card using RSM protocol.
Will this also be applicable for a Gigabit Ethernet Card running UDP? I have heard that SCI and RSM is a very good combination and just behind the Sun Fireplane interconnects which also uses RSM.
Is that true?

Latency is a problem, but adding interconnects won't
solve the latency problem unless bandwidth was also
the problem. I haven't been able to find any customers
who have interconnect bandwidth problems on any
Sun Cluster, let alone RAC. If you know of any, please

Is that true?It is true that low latency networks help performance of
RAC clusters. However, there does not seem to be a
direct correlation between interconnect latency and
performance. There are a number of studies completed
and in progress on this topic. We can generally say that
for the same RAC configuration for the same workload,
the lower latency interconnects will perform better. But
beyond that, the problem gets complex quickly and YMMV.

    Many Applications users are predefined in the Vision Demo database. The following username/password pairs have System Administrator responsibility:
    - SYSADMIN/sysadmin
    - MFG/welcome
    - OPERATIONS/welcome
    - SERVICES/welcome
    - MRC/welcome
    - HRMS/welcome
    If you have a fresh database, you can try SYSADMIN and/or OPERATIONS account.
    All application users are defined in FND_USER table.

  • Certification for Oracle 9 RAC and GPFS 3.1

    Hi all,
    I have a banking application with necessarily has to use Oracle 9.2 RAC.
    ( The cerification on Oracle 10g RAC is in plan but it will take a lot ).
    At the moment we have to plan a porting on AIX 5.3 environment on a p5 system and the customer prefers to use JFS so GPFS has to be installed. The current version of GPFS is 3.1.
    I saw that Oracle 9 RAC is certified on AIX 5.3 and HACMP 5.3 on metalink but not for GPFS 3.1. ( It seems only for GPFS 2.3 )
    There are plans to certify this environment, AIX 5.3 + GPFS 3.1 + Oracle 9.2? And how long Oracle 9.2 will be supported?

  • ASM Disk preparation for Datafiles and FRA in Oracle 10g RAC Inst

    Dear Friends,
    Please clarify wheteher the below method is correct to confiure ASM disks for Datafiles and FRA
    Partitions provided by IT team for OCR and Voting Disk
    /dev/sda1 - 150 GB (For +DATA)
    /dev/sda2 - 100 GB (For +FRA)
    OS     : RHEL 5.6 (64 Bit)
    kernel version = 2.6.18-238.el5
    Steps:(Node1)
    1) Install the RPM's for ASM
    rpm -Uvh oracleasm-support-2.1.7-1.el5.x86_64.rpm
    rpm -Uvh oracleasm-2.6.18-238.el5-2.0.5-1.el5.x86_64.rpm
    rpm -Uvh oracleasmlib-2.0.4-1.el5.x86_64.rpm
    2) Configure ASM
    /etc/init.d/oracleasm configure
    Default user to own the driver interface []: oracle
    Default group to own the driver interface []: dba
    Start Oracle ASM library driver on boot (y/n) [n]: y
    Scan for Oracle ASM disks on boot (y/n) [y]:
    Writing Oracle ASM library driver configuration: done
    Initializing the Oracle ASMLib driver: [  OK  ]
    Scanning the system for Oracle ASMLib disks: [  OK  ]
    3) Cretae ASM Disk
    /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk DISK1 /dev/sda1
    /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk DISK2 /dev/sda2
    4)/etc/init.d/oracleasm status
    5)/etc/init.d/oracleasm scandisks
    6)/etc/init.d/oracleasm listdisks
    7) Nothing to perform on Node2
    8) In dbca choose ASM and map the DISK1 for datafiles and DISK2 for FRA
    Please confirm the above steps are right?if not please clarify
    If DBCA ->ASM doesn't discover my disk then what should be the Discovery path i have to give?

    I am about to implement a Two Node Oracle 10g RAC on Windows 2008 (32-Bit) servers. We are going to use EVA4400 storeage and we have 600 GB for Oracle RAC and database.
    I intend to follow the steps given in RACGuides_Rac10gR2OnWindows.pdf mentioned in Note 811271.1 (RAC Assurance Support Team: RAC Starter Kit and Best Practices (Windows)).
    I would like to know how should I allocated the storage for OCR,Vote, Database and Flash Recovery Area. Meaning how many LUNs and of what size to be created and presented to both the servers. To start with I need to create a 25 GB database. We will be using Raw Device for OCR and Vote and ASM for Database and Flash Recovery Area.
    Please advice.

    I am about to implement a Two Node Oracle 10g RAC on Windows 2008 (32-Bit) servers. Oracle 10g on Windows 2008 is not supported. Anyway installing a cluster as of today i would use a 64-bit operating system together with a 64-bit database. Everything else is not state-of-the-art anymore.
    As of today i would go with 11g Release 1 (11.1.0.7.0) plus latest patches for Clusterware and ASM. Because you are using Windows 2008 you must use 11g Release 1 for the database as well. Bear in mind that Windows 2008 R2 is at this point in time not supported for 11g R1 or 11g R2 either.
    I would like to know how should I allocated the storage for OCR,Vote, Database and Flash Recovery Area. Meaning how many LUNs and of what size to be created and presented to both the servers. This is said in the installation documents. Rule of thumb: At least three LUNs of 2 GB for OCR and three LUNs of 2 GB for Voting disk.
    To start with I need to create a 25 GB database. We will be using Raw Device for OCR and Vote and ASM for Database and Flash Recovery Area.According to Oracles recommendations: Two disk groups: one for database files, the other for the flashback area.
    But your setup may be different (more disk groups,....)

    Hi.
    I think that this has been improved in 10g, so that we can do an exclusive mount on any database in a RAC without setting cluster_database to false. Also the parameter log_archive_start has been depreciated so the steps is simply (assuming that you by default wants to use db_recovery_file_dest to store archived redo logs)
    1) Shutdown immediate (instance 1)
    2) Startup mount
    3) Alter database archivelog
    4) Alter database open
    Repeat this sequence for all nodes in the RAC.
    And the best is to leave the log_archive_format by it's default value, to ensure that the incarnation of the database is represented in the archive log name.
    (On 10g, backupsets and archivelogs are usable beyond different reincarnation of a database, so there is a good change that S% or s% will repeat itself after an open resetlogs).

  • RAW disks for Oracle 10R2 RAC NO SUN CLUSTER

    Yes you read it correctly....no Sun cluster. Then why am I on the Forum right? Well we have one Sun Cluster and another that is RAC only for testing. Between Oracle and Sun, neither accept any fault for problems with their perfectly honed products. Currently, I have multipathed fiber hba's to a Storedge 3510, and I've tried to get Oracle to use a raw lun for the ocr and voting disks. It doesn't see the disk. I've made sure they are stamped for oracle:dba, and tried oracle:oinstall. When presenting /dev/rdsk/C7t<long number>d0s6 for the ocr, I get a "can not find disk path." Does Oracle raw mean SVM raw? Should I create metadisks?

    Not that the word "fault" is characterization of any liability, but a technical characterization of acting like a responsible stakeholder when you sell your product to a corporation. I've been working on the same project for a year, as an engineer. Not withstanding a huge expanse of management issues over the project, when technical gray areas have been reached, whereas our team has tried to get information to solve the issue. The area has become a big bouncing hot potato. Specifically, when Oracle has a problem reading a storage device, according to Oracle, that is a Sun issue. According to Sun, they didn't certify the software on that piece of equipment, so go talk to Oracle. In the sun cluster arena, if starting the database creates a node eviction from the cluster, good luck getting any specific team to say, that's our problem. Sun will say that Oracle writes crappy cluster verify scripts, and Oracle will say that Sun has not properly certified the device for use with their product. Man, I've seen it. The first time I said O.K. how do we avoid this in the future, the second time I said how did I let this happen again, and after more issues, money spent, hours lost, and customers, pissed --do the math.   I've even went as far as say, find me a plug and play production model for this specific environment, but good luck getting two companies to sign the specs for it...neither wants to stamp their name on the product due to the liability.  Yes your right, I should beat the account team, but as an engineer, man that's not my area, and I have other problems that I was hired to deal with.  I could go on.  What really is a slap in face is no one wants to work on these projects, if given the choice with doing a Windows deployment, because they can pop out mind bending amounts of builds why we plop along figuring out why clusterware doesn't like slice 6 of a /device/scsi_vhci/ .  Try finding good documentation on that.  ~You can deploy faster, but you can't pay     I am investigating the feasibility of clustering two 220Rs together in an Oracle 10g RAC configuration. Can I use a D1000 disk array for the shared storage between the two nodes? Can you briefly describe how to do it or point me to documentation on how to do it?

    My platform is SUN Solaris 10 64 bit on v490 server. On the backend side, we are using EMC CX500 storage. We will use Veritas File system and Veritas CFS.
    I would like to ask, Do I must need SFRAC to configure Oracle 10g RAC or Can I just use only Oracle CRS. I do not want to use ASM.

    The VCFS usually requires a Veritas Cluster, thus you would have to use the product combination that is bundled as SFRAC as mentioned before. Metalink in addition says:
    10      10gR2 64-bit      Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle RAC      5.0      Certified
    There is one exception to this rule: Linux.
    Veritas and Oracle support a standalone version of the Veritas Cluster Files System (and only this component) on Linux. This does not hold true for Solaris.
    Concluding, if you want to use the VCFS you would need to get a VCS, which then basically means using SFRAC.
    However, in this case, as mentioned before, you would not need ASM.

    Hi: gurus, I just recently installed the oracle 10g personal edition and trying to log on to the enterprise manger, but can't figure it out the user name and password, can some one help me and tell me what is the default user name and password to logon to the oracle instance. BTW during the installation I choose two passowrds one for the schema and one for the global database orcl. I wonder will I be using one of these passwords. Still I don't have any clue for the "User Name".

    system/manager and sys/change_on_install are still valid default passwords when database is manually created. If DBCA was used, passwords will be those defined at creation time inside DBCA.
    In case passwords have been forgotten, those can be reset:
    From an OS commnad prompt, set ORACLE_SID, ORACLE_HOME and PATH environment variables, just to make sure you are pointing to the right Oracle Home installation, and issue:
    OS> sqlplus / as sysdba
    SQL> alter user sys identified by yourNewSysPassword;
    SQL> alter user system identified by yourNewSystemPassword;
    And you're done with it.

    It's all about the shared disk(s).
    If you are only ever going to use two (2) nodes a SCSI JBOD solution is cheap. (practical too with ASM as the cluster filesystem / volume manager)
    More than 2 nodes, you step up to certified NFS, iSCSI or FC/AL connected storage. More expensive, faster, more flexible.
    The computers are the cheapest portion of the cost especially with multiple core multiple cpu 64bit linux based servers being so inexpensive.
