Is it possible to take SCJP 5.0 upgrade certification by skipping SCJP 5.0?
I�d like to know update in the new version.
Do we have the material & online support for the new version?

Still I am not clear, I am new to java planning to do SCJP examination and would like to know about SCJP 310-056 upgrade examination.. , Since it was SCJP 310-055 regular.
The term �REGULAR� & �UPGRADE� what made different?
SCJP 310-056 upgrade is some kind of functionality upgrade? Or examination patter changes ? or what?

SCJP 310-055 and SCJP 212-055

I am planning to take the Sun Certified Java Programmer (SCJP). I have searched and found out that there are two different forms of exams are available. CX-310-055 is provided by sun microsystems and 212-055 provided by the SAI program. can anyone please tell me what is the difference between these two exams? do they differ in the certification provided by the Sun? I have found that they differ in the price. Is there anything else? Awaiting your response.

The expiration for this exam is same as the original exam 310-055. The only difference is how much you pay for it.
If you are an University student where your University is registered with SAI, the exam fee is $40.
If you are NOT an University student or your Univeristy does NOT registered with SAI, the exam fee is $150.

Whats the difference between SCJP 6.0 exam and SCJP 6.0 upgrade exam ?

SCJP 6.0(CX-066) upgrade examination duration is only 150 minutes whereas SCJP 6.0 (CX-065) exam is 210 minutes. Does it mean SCJP 6.0 Upgrade exam should only be written by persons who have already cleared SCJP 6.0 ?? If not, which is the best to write between SCJP 6.0 and SCJP 6.0 upgrade exam. i havent written SCJP before.Please give suggestion.Thankq

Is SCJP 2 criteria is good???

What you people think that is SCJP criteria is good. I raised this question because I faced some interesting situation.
Do you believe that a person is SCJP but he cannot do programming. This is becoming popular in INDIA and now in PAKISTAN that people start their programming by starting preparation of SCJP and they do SCJP in 4 or 6 months! how, they learn every thing in 4 or 6 months and cleared in exam. So they don't know how to do programming. If you are programmer than you would have some idea that programming and certification are different thing, but unfortunately SCJP is becoming the standard and person who clear SCJP other expect that he is good programmer and he get job. Do you believe that in PAKISTAN 12 year older girl cleared SCJP, isn't amazing thing which shows that child is a good programmer. Now the question here is that should SUN change the SCJP criteria like SCJD and SCEA where there is a programming assignment and test.
I think that there must be some programming assignment and test to check the programming as well as the knowledge of Core java.

The SCJP isn't much of a benchmark for the quality of a developer, more for the quality of their memory. The SCJD is a better test as it requires some true development. The reality is that someone with no verifiable experience and certifcation is NOT a valid candidate if you expect them to actually develop something of value for you. A simple test can on ly go so far.

SCJP 1.5 upgrade to OCJP 1.7

Hello!
I have a SCJP 1.5 and I would like to know if there is an upgrade exam to OCJP 1.7. I know that OCJP 7 has two parts, so in my case I have to take both parts (an upgrade exam plus the second part of the exam)? Can I upgare directly to OCJP second part?

3. Since many of the companies might not have upgraded to Java 6.0, wont they prefer someone who is Java 5.0 certified instead of 6.0?

SCJA & SCJP Questions

Hi all, I would like to clear out a few points/questions if possible.
First -
I'm a C++ programmer but want to extend my knowledge in learning Java therefore im thinking of taking the Sun Certifications, which would start from SCJA. Now, would the SCJA study guide be appropriate to achieve this certification or would I need addional training software, like the bundle set "Java Entry Level Certification Solution (CDJ-JAVA-NOV)" provided by Sun itself.
Second -
Considering the fact im rather new to Java and its technology, ive been reading about Java 6.. would it be ideal to wait a little and study the 'new' version before moving into the Java 5 certifications.. just to be with the 'latest' technology or is Java 6 just a small extension/upgrade upon Java 5 ?
Third -
As my main aim is to reach the SCMAD Certification level, I would like to know what good books are available for the SCJP certification exams, as stated in the main question (SCJA and SCJP both rely in the Java SE technology) , the bundle set kinda covers the Java SE aspects and was wondering if its feasible enough to just purchase that training kit to study that course material or if there is any other relevant/suitable material instead that I should go with.

questions that present code and questions that ask if
the code will it break at compile time, runtime, or
run just fine, etc. What will the output be, etc.
Aside from memorizing data types, you must be able to
compile and run code in your brain. To me this
implies and understanding. And as most people are
reliant upon compilers and runtime errors to write
solid code, it's not easy. I think you should really
have a look at the exam and let's see how well you do.I'm not saying it's easy, and by "no understanding is implied" I mean understanding of writing software, not the mechanics of the language. my point is that SCJP et al are meaningless in terms of deciding someone's employability, since what they test is largely academic. as you say, people have compilers and tools to lean on for details such as syntax errors, so what use is testing that knowledge manually? a wide vocabulary is no indicator of a good author, a good story-teller, is it? show me the engine in your car, and I can tell you what most components are called, what they do and how they work. ask me to actually fix something in there, and I'm completely lost. the understanding of the mechanics is not enough
like it or not, knowing the syntax of the language, and the rules about what will and won't compile, etcetera, is just memorizing facts. being able to produce working complex software is a different skill, which these exams do not examine. nothing wrong with that in itself, but the danger comes because so many employers don't understand this, and see SCJP/whichever as proof that the person holding it is competent. it isn't, and I've met enough java cert'd people to know this

Right now i am in college doing my grad. and java is not a part of our curriculum
i am quite comfortable with java and want to make my career as a java programmer.
i just want to know one thing from some professionals on the forum that is it very necessary to have an SCJP Certification if i want to apply in some big companies as a java programmer since i wont be having any other certifications that i have done java .

you start by finding out what you're supposed to know to pass the exam.
That's the easy part, you should be able to find that information on Sun's certification website yourself. If you can't give up immediately.
Then you start learning that stuff.
