SCJP: Is it worth it?

Is the SCJP certification considered to be impressive by most companies?
Can it make the difference between being hired or not?
Thanks

Is the SCJP certification considered to beimpressive
by most companies?Depends on the who and the company and the country.
If a supervisor has taken and passed the exam, they
might be impressed. The exam is very difficult, even
for experience programmers.
The exam is difficult for many people, but NOT because of the topics being covered.
It's difficult because of the way the questions are worded, covering rather basic topics for the most part.
The simple fact that kids fresh out of college who've never programmed before can cram for it for a few weeks and get high scores (in the 90% range) first try says enough.
Now does it matter. Does the company actually check
with Sun to see if a candidate is telling the truth?
Has the company hired phony programmers in the past?
Ah. But a lot of phony programmers are guys having high scores at certification exams without ever having used the knowledge those exams are supposed to test.
>
Can it make the difference between being hired ornot?
I doubt it. Again, it depends on who is making the
decision and the requirements of the position.
Given 2 otherwise equally suitable candidates, it might make a difference.
Otherwise, it might hinder you (personally, and it was that way in several companies I worked in, I'd rather hire someone with more formal education than someone with a lot of certificates, especially if there was no work experience to back up those certs) .
Is it still worth it to take the exam? Yes, it will
be a good excercise. If you pass the exam, then youStudying for the exam can help highlight gaps in your knowledge, having a set date to gain that knowledge can be a good incentive to sit down with those books that you've had sitting in your bookcase but never got around to read.
That, and the satisfaction of a nice score, are the real benefits.
resume will NOT do the trick. There are many
programmers that put SCJP that never get certified
and never take the exam, yet they put it on their
resume and lie about their achievements. When theNever heard of that happening. It's fraud and can get you fired.
tough projects come, they typically fold under
pressure and leave or get their employment contract
axed.
Most people who end up like that DID in fact pass the exam but passed it without actually knowing their stuff.
They crammed for a few weeks, leaving them with short term memory retention of enough data to pass the exam but no real knowledge and long term retention (which comes only from actively using that knowledge for a prolonged period of time).
They then fail under pressure because they've forgotten everything again, just like what happens to many kids in school who don't do their homework but cram for tests.
And that is the Truth Ruth :o)

  • SCJP 1.4 or 1.5?

Which one is better to take? which is better recognised?
I have checked Sun's website and the only thing I know is:
    1) Various changes in topic that will be examined
    2) 1.5 is newer (obviously)
yet, there are still many people choosing to take 1.4 instead of 1.5... is there something advantageous in 1.4 compared to 1.5?
Some of you frequent & resourceful ones might have seen my posts when I was learning while practicing Java. Now I think I am prepared to take the test. However, what company will need programmers specialised in Java solely? 2ndly, the description of SCJP says that by passing the exam, the contestants are proved to have basic understanding on structure and syntax of Java. I know Java is quite demanding, but is a SCJP qualified programmer worth anything? or is it just a very basic start in which you need to get other qualifications where SCJP cert. is just a prerequisite?
btw, I did not see any age minimum allowed for taking the exam on Sun's page.... I am 16 now... Do you have to be an adult to take the exam?
    please help
    thx

However, what company will need programmers
specialised in Java solely? Usually those that have Java software. And as a programmer, you're screwed anyway if you only know one language. Plus, the SCJO may show that you know Java, but it doesn't make you a good programmer.

SCJP says that by passing the exam, the contestants

    and syntax of Java.What I said. :)
I know Java is quite demanding,
but is a SCJP qualified programmer worth anything? orDepends on where you ask. I India, certainly. OTOH, I think none of my co-workers has the SCJP. (Neither have I.)
is it just a very basic start in which you need to
get other qualifications where SCJP cert. is just a
    prerequisite?IMO, it's just gold plating.
btw, I did not see any age minimum allowed for taking
the exam on Sun's page.... I am 16 now... Do you have
to be an adult to take the exam?Depends on your country. You might need your parent's permission to make the deal with Sun. The exam itself has no age limit. There were younger SCJP owners than you.

    hi saideep....
this is vinny...i have recently given scjp1.4 and passed with 91%
if you wants to prepare scjp1.4 khalid mughal is sufficient but if you wants to try for scjp5.0 kathy sierra is good as khalid doesn't covers some latest topics from
scjp5.0 curriculum like AUTOBOXING,STATIC IMPORTS etc.
if you want any help you may consult me.

  • Help needed to pass Java 2 1.2 SCJP, please

I took the programmers exam (1.2) two weeks ago, I scored 57%. Though a respectable score, I was still gutted.
So now I am re-revising at the moment, trying to improve where I can.
Just wondered what anyone would recommend with the revision I should do just to improve things some more?
I feel a little dispondant at this time, so a little bit of advice will help me bounce back, bigger & better.
Thanks to everyone has helped me here at this forum, you are great, thanks, Dave.

I believe that it is possible to pass SCJP with a very high score. The books I studied helped me pass SCJP with a fairly high score, even with limited experience.
Based on my experience, I would suggest the following approach:
    1. Learn the basics, make sure you can do simple stuff with Java. Make sure you can write a simple program easily--without having to spend a lot of time looking up, for example, how to declare a "main" method in an application. From your post, I'm guessing you may have already achieved this, but if you're still having trouble with the most basic stuff, you might want to get a hold of some good tutorials. There are some online on java.sun.com, and there are a number of excellent books. I used Just Java, by Peter van der Linden. If an updated version of the book is available, it's very useful.
    2. Once you've achieved step 1, Get a good exam study guide. I used Complete Java 2 Certification Study Guide published by Sybex. This will help know specific topics will appear on the exam. More importantly, it will help you learn those specific topics in the depth required to earn a high score on the exam. This kind of book will also give you sample exam questions. Make sure you know the answers to all of the questions and that you know why those answers are correct.
    3. I also found the Coriolis Exam Cram to be quite helpful. Once you know the exam topics in detail, this book will help you cram the core information you'll need to know. It also provides more sample questions. Study them carefull. Finally, it provides a single foldout cardboard sheet containing stuff to memorize for the exam.
I followed essentially the plan I've suggested, and it got me a score of 81%. You can do it too. In fact, you can probably beat me handily, if you don't forget (as I did) to study the "java.io" package!
I believe certification is well-worth the effort for those of us who are learning Java. No, I don't have hundreds of employers beating down my door now that I'm certified, but as I continue learning to use Java effectively, I'm able to move ahead confident in my knowledge of basics like constructors, arrays, Strings and what-not.
    Go for it!
    Don't give up!

  • SCJD? worth to take?

    HI Everybody,
I have taken SCJP(025) today, somebody may say that you were foolish to take 025. Actually I have four reasons, first, I know the new version (035) in the middle of my learning weeks. Second, I don't think my future boss will be happier to see 035 (compare with 025), third, 035 is more difficult than 025, finally, either 025 and 035 is OK for SCJD. Are you agree?
Actually, I have a question about SCJD, can anybody give me suggestion whether it is worth to get SCJD (in the point of view computer science university student). Recently, my colleagues, my classmates are busy at examination. I think they are not wise to get the update exam (for example, Oracle). I really think that they have so much money and want to throw into the mouth of these companies. Although you do not have the most update cert, you have already had background ideas, you are well and easy to get the newest things, so my comments are, hey, friends, don't take any update exam! or please judge carefully!
Look forward to hearing your comments
    Best Regards

You should reask this on Monday. A lot of working programmers dont login here on a weekend.
Although if you look back this was discussed here last week.

  • I have an old Imac G4 from 2003. I haven't used it in years, but I would like to start. What are my options for getting it up to date? Is it even worth the trouble/cost? I was hoping to at least get it running Snow leopard, if not Lion. Options?

I have an old Imac G4 from 2003. I would like to start using it again, however it is so out of date and runs too slowly. What are my options to update it? I really don't want to invest a ton of money - I might as well get a new one, so if there are any reasonable ways to get it to run Snow Leopard or even Lion, please help. I've also considered using a mac mini? Is that worth it either? I'm not sure which way to go here. I don't want to trash it, I feel like it can be a great computer if updated.

Presumably it is running tiger 10.4.11?
It may be able to run Leopard 10.5:

But that is as far as the old PPC Macs can go, and Leopard can cost up to $200 on Amazon.

Hello mlazaretti. Vacation time is awesome. (Especially a road trip!) Since you will be going out for two weeks, you never know if having extra data may come in handy. I highly recommend switching to the next tier up so this way you have more data. This way it is only $10.00 more versus $15.00, and you dont have to worry about overages. Then change back at the start of the next billing cycle.
If you need help making this change let us know! Have a safe trip!

  • Best Buy, what is a loyal customer worth?

I have never written this type of message before but I felt this to be important for Best Buy to read. I was in retail for 37 years. I started out stocking shelves and ended my career a Senior Director. What I experienced in the last 3 days over a cell phone purchase with Best Buy is certainly why businesses today are not truly worried about developing loyal customers.
I was in the market for an i-phone 6 plus and went on line searching for any kind of deal on this phonefor Christmas. On Best Buy.com in bold print was the offer, "Receive a Free $150 Best Buy gift Card when you purchase any Verizon Smartphone with a NEW 2-year or Edge activation." I printed off this copy and went in to a store and asked about the promotion. I was told they had none of the phones, the deal was over on Friday so there was nothing they could do. I went to another store and got the same story. Feeling defeated I went home and got back on my computer and there was an e-mail from Best Buy saying I left this phone in my cart, are you still interested? I decided to call customer service and ask about the promotion and if I could get the phone. I got a guy named Ralph who said he was familiar with the promotion. They had phones to order on line and would help me all the way through. He did say that he was not sure if this meant just for new customers, but he said it does not say that so I will go through your purchase with you and make sure you get the gift card.
He helped me all the way through and said at the end of the transaction was when they would get me the gift card. At the end, the gift card offer still did not come up and he said, "now I see in my notes you will receive an e-mail from us within 4 hours with a link for you to get the gift card." Well, that did not happen. I waited for Friday after Thanksgiving and called customer service. This person said you get the gift card when you activate the phone. Just take the phone to the store when it arrives, activate the phone and that is when you will get the gift card.
My new phone came today and so I took it into Best Buy. I handed the associate my printed copy of the promotion and my phone and told him, I wanted to activate the phone, but only if I was going to receive the $150 Best Buy gift card. He proceeded to tell me that the promotion was last week but the "New 2-year activation" was only meant for new Verizon Customers. I asked him where it said that. He said "that is what it means" the Verizon person told us that. I again tried to tell him, I would be signing a "new 2-year activation" with the activation of the phone but I was already a Verizon Customer. He said that is an upgrade 2-year activation, not a new customer 2-year activation. I again pointed out that this distinction was not made in the add. He called his boss. His boss said the same thing that the add "meant" new customers. I said so it does not say that but I am supposed to know what it means. He told me this was a Verizon promotion and that is what they told him. So I asked if I could take this over to Verizon and would they honor it? His words" they won't, they are worse than we are."
At this point I could not beieve my ears and I said I will just return the phone. This $150 Best Buy gift card, that would be used on your merchandise with your margins would maybe have cost you $75. I will probably not purchase anything at Best Buy for a long time unless I have to. My story will certainly be discussed at gatherings as we all talk about our Christmas shopping trials, good deals and bad experiences.  Best Buy, was it worth it? Do you even care? If you want to make this right, you can e-mail me at the e-mail address associated with my "unboxed" account.

    Hello putter,
Welcome to the forum. I'm very sorry for the delay in replying to your post. It's always a smart idea to look for a good deal when you are ready to upgrade your phone. It sounds like you received conflicting information when you tried to take advantage of the promotion, and I sincerely apologize for any frustration, and disappointment this has caused. I also hope I can provide further clarification.
Per the terms and conditions of the promotion, which you can view in the link MMaier kindly provided, it states: "Valid only for customers NEW to Verizon." I'm very sorry if the agent that helped you when you called was not aware of this information. Using the e-mail you registered on the forum I was able to locate your information, and viewed that you have since returned the phone. Are you still interested in purchasing a new phone? Is there any way I could further assist you? We truly do appreciate our loyal customers, and I assure you I will also be documenting your comments for further employee training.
Thank you again for posting here on the forum, and I hope you will give us another chance in the near future to offer you a much better experience.

  • I have 1 GB RAM on an '07 MacBook Pro. 1) How do I check remaining memory? 2) I have Microsoft office 2004 - do I need to buy more RAM to upgrade to '11? 3) I need a new battery ... Is it worth the $$ to buy a new battery, RAM and Microsoft office 2011?

I have a MacBook Pro from '07 with 1 GB of memory. The battery is shot and my AppleCare has run out. I just upgraded the OS to 10.6.8. But a few questions:
1 - How do I even check how much memory I have left on this computer?
2 - How do I check how many battery cycles are left?
3 - I want to upgrade to Microsoft Office '11 because I don't have Adobe Acrobat to creat pdf's and I need to be able to do this for school... Instead of buying acrobat, I figured I would just upgrade to Office '11 because I can generate pdf's from Word. Roughly how much RAM does Office '11 take up?
4 - Does Apple still make batteries for this computer (from '07)? How much do they cost?
5 - How much does 1 more GB of memory cost?
AND lastly -- is it even worth it to spend the $ on more RAM, a new battery and Office '11?
Or does it make more sense to just get a new computer entirely? (trying to avoid this).
ANY help would be sooo appreciated! Thanks.

1 - How do I even check how much memory I have left on this computer?
If you're asking how to check to see if you need more RAM, open Activity Monitor and go to the System Memory tab, then compare page outs and page ins.  If page outs is 10% or more of page ins, you probably need more RAM.
2 - How do I check how many battery cycles are left?
There's no limit on the number of battery cycles, it's just that the more cycles you've used the more "worn out" your battery gets.  You've got a 4-year-old machine, and if it's still got the original battery, it's probably about time for a replacement battery.  You can check battery health using System Profiler...  look at the Power section under Hardware.
3 - I want to upgrade to Microsoft Office '11 because I don't have Adobe Acrobat to creat pdf's and I need to be able to do this for school... Instead of buying acrobat, I figured I would just upgrade to Office '11
You don't need Office 2011 to create PDFs.  Any application capable of printing can create PDFs on a Mac.  Just choose File -> Print, but instead of clicking the Print button in the print dialog, click the PDF button and choose Save As PDF in the menu that appears.
4 - Does Apple still make batteries for this computer (from '07)? How much do they cost?
5 - How much does 1 more GB of memory cost?
I'll "ditto" sig's answers to these.
AND lastly -- is it even worth it to spend the $ on more RAM, a new battery and Office '11?
Or does it make more sense to just get a new computer entirely? (trying to avoid this).
If Office 2004 is still working fine for you, stick with that and don't incur the costs of Office 2011.  As to the RAM, only add more if the test I mentioned above indicates that you need it.  If you buy more RAM when you don't really need it, you won't see much (if any) performance improvement.  That just leaves the battery...  and if the machine is still doing what you need it to do and you don't really need a new machine for anything, you could definitely buy a new battery and get a few more years out of it.

  • IPhone 4S Battery life issue, worth returning?

    Hi All,
I have had my iPhone 4S for a few days now.
I have tried all the tips and tricks posted on here (turn off locations, notifications, system restore etc....).
    But nothing seems to work.
I just about get one days battery out of my 4S, with very little use (sending a few texts and going on the internet for about 10mins)
In your opinion is it worth returning the phone?
    Many Thanks.

The battery drain problem on my iPhone 4S was definitely related to Location Services. You'll want to make sure that you have the Location Services status bar icon enabled to help you determine at a glance if the service is hanging on your device. I've posted more details on my blog.

You also may want to consider some kind of external storage just for your video projects.

  • PCI-e Graphics in Advanced Dock isn't worth the loss of the Undock Button !!

    Greetings,
After using ATI Radeon X1300 in the advanced Dock with my W500 (4061-38U) for over a year, I'm in clear position to conclude, it isn't worth it. Here are the reasons why you should not have this setup :
     - the complete loss of one of the TOP features of using a Docking Station : the possibility of fast dock/undock the system without restart.
     - the use of PCI-e 1X is rubbish performance.
     - the native 1900x1200 resolution of the 4061-38U , which is very frustrating to read. So this screen ends up not being used at all.
     - the possibility to connect 2 screens : 1 using DVI, the other using VGA with very little quality loss depending on the screen, cable and resolution.
     - the docking station operating in high fan noise (though I had this worked)
     - eventually the dock becomes unstable due to power and heat issues
     - the waist of time, thinking on how to continue being stubborn and approaching different setups to improve performance in thee issue :
->Lenovo USB DVI box, (Slow performance, USB Bandwidth consumer. CPU Consumer)
-> Other USB DVI products ( same issues)
-> Matrox Dual/triple Display (likely to be of slow performance, PCMCIA card is not part of the Laptop Docking procedure, don't know if it requires restart, overpriced in my point of view)
     - lastly and not less important , the waist of space: it is possible to operate the laptop lid closed, and so arrange one of the LCD's to be over the Dock, VESA table mounted.
So as of yesterday, I got back to this simpler yet more efficient setup : W500 + Advanced Dock + 1 Viewsonic 22" LCD operating in landscape mode + 1 Viewsonic 22" LCD operating in portrait mode + backup disk in dock's UltraBay + external USB mouse and keyboard.
