SCOM 2007 to monitor Exchange 2010 Backups

Hi
Is there any way of getting SCOM 2007 to monitor Exchange 2010 backups. I'm using Commvault as the backup solution, was wondering if there's anything i can check for to ensure successful or failed bakcups

Hi
DPM will write its own events. You can create your own management pack for SCOM to monitor the events on the Exchange server but SCOM has an exchange management pack you can install.

• Migration from Exchange 2007 SP3 to Exchange 2010

Hello,
We are planning a single server migration from Exchange 2007 SP3 to Exchange 2010.  I'll be building the 2010 server on a 2008 R2 box. My question is, can I make the jump directly to Exchange 2010 SP3, or do I need to install exchange 2010 SP1 first
- migrate from 2007 SP3, and then install SP3 for exchange 2010 later?
Thanks,
Eric

@ Hasan
Dimdik - TAT,
That's not correct at all, you can migrate exchange server 2007 SP3 and RollUp Update 10 minimum to Exchange Server 2013 with minimum CU1.

• After Exchange 2007 Migration to Exchange 2010, OAB is erroring

Hello all,
I migrated from single server Exchange 2007 to single Exchange 2010 2 months ago using a co-existence environment.  The 2007 server is still running, but it's not doing anything but SMTP relay, as I am waiting on Oracle admin to point their server at
my new 2010  server.  Yesterday, I noticed a new mail enabled user we created was not showing up in the Address Book.  He is in the Global Address list when I check it from OWA.  And I can see him in my Address book if I search All Users,
instead of the Global Address List.  Everytime I try to update the Offline Address Book, I get the following error
OABGen encountered error 80004005 while cleaning the offline address list public folders under /o=2007Server/cn=addrlists/cn=oabs/cn=Default Offline Address Book.  Please make sure the public folder database is mounted and replicas exist of the offline
address list folders.  No offline address lists have been generated.  Please check the event log for more information.
- \Default Offline Address Book
There was a Public Folder on the 2007 server, but I don't think anyone was using it.  All of our clients our 2007 or later.  Enable Web-based distribution is enabled and Generation server is my new 2010 server.  Enable public folder distribution
not enabled.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No, the Enable public folder check box is not ticked.  However, the link you provided has led me to other clues.  The author says "To locate the actual
OAB distribution point on the Client Access Server, the Outlook client will use the autodiscover service."  I wonder if still having the CAS role on the old 2007 Exchange Server still installed is causing issues with Autodiscover.  Below

• SCOM health check on Exchange 2010 servers

Hi,
Does SCOM have any built-in function to perform
health check on Exchange 2010 servers?

You can check health check of Exchange 2010 by install management pack of Exchange 2010.
Here's management pack of exchange 2010
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=692
Before Import management Pack and how to configure it, you can check below link

• Dpm 2010 exchange 2010 backups are failing

Hi, I'm getting an error which does not seem to match in the DPM 2010 ID codes. Randomly, I have backups of an exchange 2010 DAG that are failing. The backup will run for a short time (5mints..up to 10minuts) and then will fail with the following error:
Type: Recovery point
Status: Failed
Description: Backup failed as another copy of 'user' database is currently being backed up. (ID 32628 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990D51)
     More information
End time: 4/25/2011 10:37:27 PM
Start time: 4/25/2011 10:26:55 PM
Time elapsed: 00:10:31
Data transferred: 0 MB
Cluster node -
Recovery Point Type Incremental Sync
Source details: 06001
Protection group: EXCH2010 - 06001
I've tried restarting the DPM server to troubleshoot. I say this happens randomly because I've had some backups successfully complete against the same exchange server. The only other item that seems odd is when creating protection groups against the DAG,
the intial lookup seems to take forever. Not sure what to try next.

Hello,
As DPM relies on the exchange writer to take the snapshot for the backup, if the backupinprogress flag is set to true and it does not seem get out of this state even when there is no actual backup in place, then at this point DPM is the victim.
As far as I am aware the only way is to clear that flag is to:
a.) Reboot the exchange server
or
b.) Restart the information store
In some cases even:
1.) Either Activate all other databases on another Node except for the Problem Database, and Dismount the Problem database temporarily
Or:
1.)Dismount all Databases on this Node including the problem database
2.)Restart the Exchange Information Store Service.
3.)Mount any dismounted databases
You may want to redirect this question below to the exchange 2010 forum of:
"if the backupinprogress is set to true when it should be set to false as there really is no backup being taken, then how can I reset it without having to perform:
a.) reboot of exchange
b.) restart of the information store"

• Monitoring Exchange 2010 from external network

I would like to monitoring the following services pf Exchange 2010 from external network / internet
1) SMTP (To confirm the mail has been accepted for delivery)
2) ActiveSynch (Mobile device can login and synch different folders)
3) WebApp (Users can log and access mail)
I have created a script using test-Mailflow, test-activesynchconnectivity and Test-WebServicesConnectivity and running it on server from LAN. I want to monitor the above 3 areas from Internet(external network) to make sure these services are available
from Internet.
We have Barracuda as SMTP gateway, TMG for WebApp and MobileIron for ActiveSynch.
Will i be able to monitor these services from external network(internet) using test commands. What are the alternate ways to monitor the above services from external network.
Thanks

We are trying to build exactly similar to ExRCA. ExRCA is good but it is manual. We would like to build something similar to ExRCA which can monitor exchange services periodically and send alerts.

• Outlook 2010 cached mode cannot see GAL but Outlook 2007 can via Exchange 2010

Hi,
I have a problem similar to
this but with a different cause.
Our OAB config looks good from both Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010. Both can see the GAL in non-cached mode but in cached mode only 2007 can see the GAL. In 2010 it's just not there. Even the same user can only see it in 2007.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this is?
Cheers,
Rob

Hi,
I have got the same issue, that I can't see updated OAB in outlook 2010.
Can you share the detailed path of the locations you have mentioned here:
In Office 2010, this happens but these values also exist in the [Service1] section and are blank:
OfflineAddressBookPath=
OfflineFolderPathAndFilename=
And how do we add locations to these paths?
Thank you in advance.

• Migrating Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010; initial backup slow...

Just migrated about 300 Exchange 2007 mailboxes to Exchange 2010 database.  Temporarily using Windows Server Backup for Server 2008 R2 to backup the databases to a remote storage.  Initial full backup of the database is taking longer than 24 hours
for a 235 GB database and what is now 334,000 log files...as a result of the migration.  Seems like a long time.
I tested network connectivity to and from the SAN, and the Exchange server and there are no server or disk I/O issues.  Server is running 16 cores and 48 GB RAM.  Is this normal for it to take this long to run through the consistency checks and
backups for this amount of data?

• SCOM 2007 - OPerations console only for exchange servers.

HI All,
There is s requirement in my organisation where-in we have to create monitoring /operations console , only for exchange servers is that possible? If yes, can some share the information on the same also, this needs to be done in SCOM 2007 R2.
Rgs,

Hi Naren,
If your organisation does not have any restrictions in providing the Administration acces, Then i would sugges you import the Exchange 2010 / 2013 management packs.
Download link: http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=692
http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=39039 ( Exchange 2013 M's not compatible with SCOM 2007 R2 as per my understanding)
Post importing,
Go to the operations console and SCOPE the objects only to Exchange 2010 Monitoring target, So that the console will only display you the Exchange 2010 management pack alerts.
Once in a while remove the SCOPE and clear the other alerts as well and then re scope it back.
Or if you are only monitoring Exchange 2010 then no need to SCOPE at all as there will be no other management packs to throw alerts in SCOM console.
If security is your concern then Make a normal operator account like the below and tell them to SCOPE the objects to Exchange 2010 or give them access to the Web console where the administration tab will be unavailable at all times.
Security scope: Make them a member of This group for limited / only monitoring access:
I Admin access is necessary, Then make them a member of Operationsmanager Admins on the 1st group of the screenshot.

• How to monitor particular individual Exchange 2010 mailbox

Hi
Is it possible to monitor a particular individual Exchange 2010 mailbox? If so please send me the script or steps to to accomplish this
Donald D'souza (http://donald-scom.blogspot.com/)

The Exchange 2010 MP has had some issues of late and is once again unavailable. Hopefully this should be rectified soon. Keep an eye on the Management Pack forum and someone should post there once it is back.
I appreciate the Exchange team are looking for ways to get extra monitoring from SCOM and I'm certainly not saying you can't do mailbox monitoring with SCOM. I'm just saying be careful. I have seen one enterprise write a discovery to discover the
mailboxes they wanted to monitor. The discovery captured data that changed every iteration that the discovery ran. They then wondered why SCOM stopped working, ignoring the fact that they had discovered thousands of objects whose properties changed every
time discovery ran, causing huge numbers of state change events and massive database growth.
If you are looking for in-depth exchange mailbox monitoring then SCOM is not the tool for it. Quest and Sirana do dedicated enterprise tools. If you take a look at the links and say that is what your team want then I'd suggest evaluating those
products. Developing SCOM to deliver that would not be cost efficient.
Hope you don't mind but I'll ask again - what specifically do you want to monitor? Mailbox Size? Number of emails sent \ received? size of message sent? destination? number of attachments? size of attachments? blocked messages? If you need deep detail
along the lines of the following then you really need to evaluate the following:
http://www.sirana.com/exchange/reporting
If you end up writing scripts to do all the above then you will likely severely impact performance of either SCOM or your Exchange server or possibly both.
Sadly (for budgeting) SCOM doesn't necessarily replace specialist tools - it just complements them. Likewise, if you want deep dive SQL then you'll still need Quest or Idera based tools. Probably fewer licenses and better targetted at servers with known
issues.
Cheers

• Exchange 2007 CAS cutover to 2010 CAS experiencing some problems

We have just finished the cutover from Exchange 2007 CAS to Exchange 2010 CAS. Have had a few problems that we cannot nail down. First, On some external connections to Exchange 2010 CAS the redirection to the 2007 CAS take about 30 seconds or more.
All DNS seems to be in place. We have our external records for webmail.old.com and webmail.new.com. We had the internal records for both as well. the virtual directories have been change on the 2007 CAS servers to point to webmail.old.com. Internal connections
and redirections seem fine. Externally I can access 2007 and 2010 separately just fine. Any thoughts are assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,
Please try to disable Outlook Anywhere on your Exchange 2007 CAS infrastructure in the "Internet Facing AD Site" by utilizing the cmdlet: Disable-OutlookAnywhere -Server <cas2007>. Optionally, you can also remove the RPC over
HTTP proxy component.</cas2007>

• How to migrate Exchange HUB transport 2007 server with Exchange Hub transport 2010.

Hi,
How to migrate hub transport 2007 server with Exchange 2010 hub transport server.
Regards
Anil

Hi Anil
You do not do an in-place upgrade of Exchange - you build new Exchange 2010 Hub Transport Servers, you can utilize existing hardware by uninstalling and installing Exchange 2010 - but you must have Hub Transport Servers that match the Exchange version in
place for all Mailbox Servers that have the same Exchange version.
Essentially there must be Exchange 2007 Hub Transport servers in place whilst there are Exchange 2007 Mailbox servers.
Read "Upgrading from Exchange 2007 Transport -
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd346708%28v=exchg.141%29.aspx"
Exchange 2010 will synchronise certain configuration like Transport Rules and journaling when installing the first Exchange 2010 Hub Transport server, but from then on you must ensure synchronisation yourself.
Send Connectors and Recieve Connectors will need manual configuration.

I use SCOM 2007 to monitor our Exchange 2010 environment.  I use the test-* commands in powershells on my desktop to catch anything that may occur between SCOM alert thresholds.  Several of these use the extest_ account.
Today, I looked at the extest_ user mailbox and found that the tests are accumulating in the mailbox.  What do I need to configure so the tests are purged from the mailbox, including the deleted items folder?
Information, links, and comments are all welcome.
TIA.

Hi,
Do you mean that there are many test mailbox and you want to remove them? As far as I know,  those account is used for synthetic transaction tests for the Exchange. Those synthetic transactions will perform several tests on your Exchange infrastructure
and warn you if there is a problem with your mail flow. In order to perform such tests the requirement is to have specific users with mailboxes created.  Those users is created by script named New-TestCasConnectivityUser.ps1.
Each site will have a test account, please refer to the below link for more details:
http://stefanroth.net/2013/02/09/scom-exchange-2010-mp-extest_-user/
From my point of view, we can remove those account, but then the script can create them again.
If you don't create a test mailbox on one or more Mailbox servers, the Management Pack will return the following warning: “The test mailbox was not initialized. Run new-TestCasConnectivityUser.ps1 to ensure that the test mailbox is created.”

• BIS and Exchange 2010 with TMG

Dear all,
I stumped into this problem whereby my client has an Exchange 2010 with mixed-mode mobile users of Active Sync and BlackBerry.
They have this https://mail.***.com.my as their OWA URL and credentials should be entered as:
Username: Domain\Username
     Password: Password
This convention is the same irregardless users accessing from OWA or to setup Active Sync or BlackBerry.
Question are:
1. How do I setup BIS account on my BlackBerry? Method I use is log into my telco portal but the credentials I entered does not recognised by the system.
2. Alternatively, I tried to set it direct on my BlackBerry but was prompt the same error as above which is 'Username must be at least 4 characters'.
3. Does naming convention setup same for Active Sync users and BlackBerry users?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BIS itself is provided to you by your wireless service provider. With hundreds of different carriers in the world and dozens of different methods each, there's no way to be sure how to guide you with specifics. I suggest you ring them up and talk to them about how to enable BIS on your BB.

I'm not sure how ActiveSync works, but the configuration instructions for OWA are here:
KB03133How to integrate a Microsoft Outlook Web Access email address with a BlackBerry Internet Service account
And here are some further helpful KBs on the topic:
KB15173Locate the mailbox name for a Microsoft Outlook Web Access 2007 email account
KB02858Unable

Access email address with a BlackBerry Internet Service account
KB04804Error message appears when attempting to integrate a Microsoft Outlook Web Access 5.5 or 2010 account
KB18567BlackBerry
Internet Service cannot connect to a Microsoft Outlook Web Access
account using Microsoft Exchange 2007 or Microsoft Exchange 2010
