SCOM Monitoring Views

Hi, I had created a group (for eg. ABC ) and dashboard view for my specific set of
windows servers. I noticed that  I am able to see other servers on this dashboard view which am not added in my group (ABC).
I had configured this view for specific application and sql log alerts by creating Alert Rule. Just want to know how can I eliminate other set of servers here. Is any reason why other servers are showing here.
Thanks in advance..
Regards, Rajeev Parambil

How did you create the group? Explicit members or Dynamic members?
If Explicit members, then you need to check if you are using the wrong criteria to get the members. You should be using the full FQDN names of your selective servers.
If you are using %PQRST% then other servers having this name might become members of this group.
Finally in View, Use the group ABC to populate your view.

  • SCOM monitoring of a repetitive alert

I have a vendor system that has an overly aggressive built-in windows event log alert.  I am wondering how to work with SCOM to best build an alert that meets my needs.
Our system holds 'unused' data elements in a DB.  About once a year we have to go through a request process to add in more of these 'unused' elements.  We typically add another million or so rows, and then we are good for another year.  The
system uses-up 3-10 thousand rows a day depending on sales volume.  This isn't any type of emergency as we have windows event log alerting on this.  If we every go below a threshold, which I can set, then the alerting starts adding entries into the
Application Event Log.  My threshold is such that I have several weeks to go before there is any real risk.
I want to be alerted via an email generated by a SCOM monitor for this.  The trouble seems to come here.  The application is setup to add a alert into the application event log EVERY 5 MINUTES until the threshold condition has cleared.  I
would like to have the alert sent to me once every day, until I clear the condition.  Not just once at the beginning of the event, and not once every five minutes as that would certainly be annoying.
Can anyone help suggest a SCOM setup that would work for this type of error / alert?

    Hi There,
For capturing Event logs you will need to setup a Rule.
So the conditions must be tight so you unnecessarily don't get false alert. As rules triger alert that much number of times as the event is logged into the event viewer. I.e 10 Events of your criteria in your Event log, You get 10 Alerts.
    1.Use a Alerting Rule
    2. Mention the Event id
    3. Mention the Event source
    4. Mention the Event log location where the log is created (Application or System etc)
    5. IMPORTANT- Does your Event description contain the # of less tables when your at risk ? If yes mention the same in the custom criteria for EventDescription and you are done.

  • External Monitor Viewing - ALL FRAMES Unchecked

    Hello FCP gurus
I cannot get a video signal on my external monitor.
For some reason I have lost the ability to check the ALL FRAMES option in the View Menu under External Video. Each time I click ALL FRAMES it stays in the OFF mode. I think this may be the reason for the external picture loss? I have also just relocated my edit suite so somewhere in the move I might have upset the 'workflow'. Not sure, can't see why? Before today I was getting an external picture no problem.
The configuration I have is: A Firewire connection from the Hard Drive to a DV Cam (PD150). RCA Vid connector from the cam into a domestic TV.
I have followed all of Shane's #8 Stock Answer and still nudda!!
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks in advance!
    josie
    P.S. I work in Pal
    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

Heck, I don't know, but reading your question helped me to finally figure out how to get my external monitor working.
Would it be okay to add to your question. Now that I have mine working the audio goes through the monitor instead of my nice Cerwin-Veg speakers. Is there a way to fix that?
P.S. Have you tried a power down, hooking up the monitor and then coming back up?

You can find some management packs here:
    http://systemcenter.pinpoint.microsoft.com/en-US/applications/search/Operations-Manager-d11?q=
There are other sites as well but this is the MS page for hosting MP's.  The default SCCM 2012 Management pack for SCOM 2012 is pretty functional, this page talks a little bit about it:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/kevinholman/archive/2012/12/11/monitoring-configmgr-2012-with-opsmgr.aspx
If I remember correctly, it does NOT include a lot of client monitoring but I could be wrong.  It might take some custom monitor creation or management pack downloads to get exactly what you're wanting.  If I can find something like that
I'll add it to this post.
A good rule of thumb that I live by with SCOM, in case the product is new to you, is to save all your changes and customizations to the SCCM management pack in a custom-created management pack.

Hey everybody, I'm new to Speedgrade, so sorry if the answer to this problem should be obvious. Carrying on, I'm having an issue when I bring a clip into Speedgrade. I'd bring in the clip and switch to the monitor view, only to find that my footage has been massively scaled down! I've tried importing via premiere, as well as using the standard navigator of Speegrade for importing. I'm not sure if this information is relevant, but the shot I'm attempting to work with is 29.97 fps, 720 x 480, avi format. Any help would be greatly appreciated - Thanks in advance!

To me it looks like a graphics-card/driver issue.

    Hi Bogdan,
Yes, we are looking for a graphic tool in the Native Version that would help us inspect & monitor caches. The examples in Java Edition would be JEMonitor, RepJEMonitor, JEDiagnostics, and RepJEDiagnostics. These are part of the BDB JE JConsole and allow graphical representation of JE applications caching activity.
Please let us know at your earliest convenience if there are similar options in Native Edition.

  • How to create a customized view in SCOM monitoring to view alerts

    Hi All,
I am trying to create a customized view in SCOM 2012 R2 monitoring for command center team to have the alerts from Server OS, AD, Exchange and few other MPs. I understand that I can use the option "Create by Specific source" and by selecting the

    Hi Srini,
Based on the above requirement, You want to create a Dashboard view with Specific alerts but not all right ?
Based on my understanding on your above requirement i created one in my SCOM. Please let me know if this is what you really wanted ?
For the below you really need to know what are those alerts, ONLY those alerts you want to be displayed in the dashboard.
Then Go to the Monitoring tab in SCOM and then Right click Active alerts and select New -> Select New Alert view
When you select new alert view you will need to specify the Resolution state and the Specific alerts you want.
In the below example i have selected "MSExchange Active sync Alert" as a example. So my goal is here such that only the alerts i have specified from my selection ( "MSExchange Active sync Alert") if it appears in New state will appear
in this view not all other alerts.
So for that i just used the below options:
    Resolution state & Alert name
    Resolution state = New
    Alert name = %MSExchange XXXXXXXX%
Also as of i see there was no option for entering multiple alert names. But i think there is and i am still trying as it accepts some SQL Wild cards. So if any one has an idea what is the wild card what is to be used to mention multiple names in that Name
    view please let me know.

  • WMI Performance counters not shown in SCOM Performance view

    Hi,
We're unable to see %CPU usage, avg cpu queue length and many other WMI counters on a Performance View for one of our servers.
    - The agent is displayed as healthy.
    - We are getting data from counters generated by script.
    - WMI counters are shown as enabled.
    - We're able to see the counters locally on server manager, on performance counters.
    - we have run lodctr /R, without success.
    - no alerts on the scom agent or server.
    - no overrides for these counters exist.
So definitely it looks like the WMI infrastructure is working ok but somehow data is not being sent to the server. Any hints on debugging this issue?
    Thanks in advance

Ops Manager, Ops DW, or both?  If performance collection is ENABLED for this server, and it's a W2K8 box, and you can see the perf in perf monitor on the server, then you should look to see if other performance is missing.  If there are no performance
counters being collected, then you can do a few things, but before doing that, do some spot checking.
Is this rule enabled?  Did someone override disable it?  If enabled, and no overrides, then create a view (my views or whatever that custom workspace is) targetting the generic class of "said" target for the collection rule.  Do you see any
computers listed?  How many computers are listed?  Jot that down.  Go to discovered inventory in the monitoring pane, and change scope to the targeted class for the collection rule.  Count what is returned, do the number of servers returned
    match?
If you have the same number of green healthy objects in both the custom view and the discovered inventory scope, then you are good, if there are a few missing, you need to troubleshoot those agents.
If you are missing all of them, you probably have a problem with your RMS/SQL, which means you have to start traces on SQL and or at the very least look at the ops manager event log on the rms.
So, back to the "missing a few" scenario.  You could start to do logging, etc, but instead of that, reinstall the agent on one of the machines not showing up in both views.  Wait a few hours.  Check the views again, and keep an eye on the
ops manager event log on that sick agent.  Increase the size of the log file, if you have too, so you don't over right events.
After a few hours if it's not showing up, you can either start down the path of enabling tracing on the agent (there are kbs on how to turn this on, and the logs are not hard to go through), or you can uninstall the agent.  Run cleanmom on the box.
     Reinstall the agent.
I would perform the repair, clean mom, before I troubleshoot the agent, but that's just me.  Keep in mind, any data that is collected and or queued will be lost when you do the clean mom.  But since you have no data as it is, no real loss.
While the agent is showing up in the console, and before you start down the previous steps, I would verify that you have events collected as well (another query) and stop a service on the box that is supposed to be monitored, see if it triggers and alert
and a state change.  Also peek at the RMS ops manager event log, you might have some SQL problems.
    Good luck.

  • SCOM monitoring basics

I realize that there are out-of-the-box monitors and alerts. But, as a learning experience, I want to view the free space on the C: drive of my production servers as a health state. It should show all of my production servers as green, unless the free
space on the C: drive drops below 10% and then it should show red.
    1)
Under “Administration”, I created a management pack and I called it “Production Servers MP”.
    2)
I want a group that only contains my production servers (“PROD” is in the server name).
Under “Authoring”, I went to the “Groups” section and I created a new group called “Production Servers Group”.
I selected the “Production Servers MP”.
I added “Dynamic Members” to the group.
I created a rule that says “(Object is Windows Server AND (DNS Name Contains PROD) AND True).
There were no Subgroups or Excluded Members.
    3)
Under “Authoring”, I went to the “Monitors” section and I created a new “unit monitor”.  It is “Windows Performance Counter” – “Simple Threshold”.
I selected the “Production Servers Group” that I created earlier for the “Monitor Target”.
I selected “Performance” for the “Parent Monitor”.
For the Performance Counter, I selected “Logical Disk” for the Object, “% Free Space” for the counter and “C:” for the Instance.
I gave it a threshold value of 10%.
I checked the box for “Generate alerts for this monitor”.
I left it at Priority at Medium and Severity at Critical.
    4)
When I go to the “Monitoring” section, I can see the “Production Servers MP” group that I created.
I’m very confused at this point. No matter what options I try to give for creating a State View, it doesn’t show me the monitor I made.
How do I create a “state view” that will only show the health of the free space of drive C: from the monitor that I created?

    Hi
Just to add to what John has already stated in a more general answer. You cannot create monitoring in this way. Although it is "logical" to think that you are applying a rule or a monitor to a group, SCOM does not work this way.
You need to target a class. Never target a rule, monitor or discovery at a group. It just won't work the way you expect:
    http://scug.be/dieter/2011/06/20/scom-2007-target-a-rule-or-monitor-to-a-computer-group/
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/momteam/archive/2007/11/14/targeting-series-part-2-why-targeting-a-computer-group-fails.aspx
A poster called Rule and Monitor Targeting Best Practices is available in pdf format at:
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=125048
Equally - if you are ever looking to create a monitor that checks multiple instances of the same class, then you need to follow this:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/kevinholman/archive/2009/11/24/writing-monitors-to-target-logical-or-physical-disks.aspx
There is a steep learning curve to SCOM and it might be worth looking through some technet labs and also this:

  • SCOM - Monitors for Management Packs

    Hi All,
Can any one share the information how we can get the list of monitors in a management pack in SCOM 2012 R2.
    The SCOM 2007 R2 cmdlet doesn't work in SCOM 2012 R2.
    Rgs,

    Hi
there is no option to pull threshold for monitors/rules, as each rule/monitor has different schema of workflow.
you can use mp viewer to see threshold for monitor/rule and make a note of threshold as it is one time activity( you no need to apply mp viewer on library and discovery mp in general for Microsoft MP) and you can apply override explorer to get override values
for monitor/rules this gives current effective threshold.
refer below link for scom 2012 tools.

  • SCOM Monitoring - throttling perf counters

    Hi,
In performance rules in the BizTalk SCOM MP, there are 4 perf counters (high process memory...). But I'm not able to find the throttling performance counters (Message publishing throttling state and Message delivery throttling state).
May I consider that these counters are not a good way to monitor my BizTalk performance? Without SCOM, it remains for me a good source of informations.
And how can I add these counters manually in a Performance View in SCOM and in an availability rule?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
BizTalk Server will initialize throttling to protect the system from reaching an unrecoverable state. Throttling can indicate a problem and assist you in identifying its source. After you have identified the cause of the bottleneck based on the throttling
state, analyze the other performance counters to narrow down the source of the problem.
For example, high contention on the MessageBox database could be due to high CPU usage, which could be caused by excessively paging to disk, which could be caused by low memory conditions. High contention on the MessageBox could also be caused by high lock
contention, which could be due to saturated disk drives.
Monitoring the Message Delivery Throttling State and the Message Publishing Throttling State for each host instance is usually a good place to start. If the value of these counters is not zero, it is indicative that throttling is happening within the BizTalk
Server system and it is possible to further analyze the cause of the bottleneck. For descriptions on the other performance counters, see "Identifying Bottlenecks in the Database Tier" in BizTalk Server 2006 R2 Help at
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=106798.

  • 2nd monitor view

Hello, if this feature is already implemented please tell me where!!
It would make a lot of sense to me to allow a second / external monitor output / overlay, much like you can do in Premiere through the program monitor's playback settings.
When I'm on set, as the director, I don't want to be tied down to the laptop that's running OnLocation.
It would be practical, intuitive, and AMAZING in general to include the ability to see the video feed coming from the camera both on the primary monitor for the recording operator's use (with the vector scopes, etc) and an overlay output via the second monitor (HDMI / DVI / VGA) so other people, such as director, makeup, clients, etc can see just the video signal.
Often the laptop screen isn't the greatest, and being able to connect to a high quality monitor would be very helpful as well as practical and convenient.
You would want it to show the video being recorded / live image, and then when playing back, it would show the playback, just like OnLocation currently does.
I dunno - this just seemed to make sense.
    Thanks very much!

    I guess it's a bug.
(In case you wonder about my setup: my second monitor is smaller and I prefer to use it for tool panels etc. It would also be ideal to carry the Lightroom grid view by default for quick navigation, while working on the individual images on the first monitor. Not too far-fetched a setup, I guess.)
No it's by design. The grid on the second monitor is actually a vertically stretched version of the filmstrip. So, you can forget any ideas about being able to edit multiple images on the second monitor.
