SCOM questions

Which management pack have you found the most noisy? How have you gone about tuning it?
What are the Pros and Cons of a gateway server in SCOM 2007 R2 ?
What are some high availability options for SCOM 2007 R2 core components.
What are some high availability options for
SCOM 2012 - agents
why can't you target a rule or monitor at a group?
What type of issues have you come across when deploying agents and how did you resolve them?
any one please post the answers for this questions

1) the most noisy are Exchange and cluster MP. but then again it depends on you environment and what MPs you import.
2) Gateway servers helps in managing servers from untrusted domain. read more on
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/systemcenter/en-US/c6b2f29f-e5e0-4560-80dc-e4642f6d2437/gate-way-server-in-scom-2007-r2?forum=operationsmanagerreporting
3) SCOM 2012 removes the single point of failure as there is no RMS role. Have your gateway servers in failover mode.
4) set up failover of agents to gateway servers.
5) That's how rules and monitors work.
6)

  • Questions on SCOM -SCVMM integration

    Hi All,
I have some questions on SCOM -SCVMM Integration. Please help me in answering them.
    1) Can multiple SCVMM servers be integrated with the same SCOM Management Server?
    2) Does uninstalling an older version of the SCOM Console on the SCVMM server require a reboot of the server?
    3) Does installing the SCOM Console on the SCVMM server require a reboot of the server?
    4) For what purpose is the SCOM Operations Console used on the SCVMM server; is it just required to install the binaries to connect with the Management Server?
    Thanks in advance.
    Thanks, S K Agrawal

Hi, I did the integration some time ago and took some screen shots - see the following link:
    http://myopsmgrblog.wordpress.com/2013/04/23/scom-integration-with-scvmm/
One thing to be aware of is the following:
Then add the SCVMM service account into the SCOM Admins Group (a reboot of the SCVMM server may be required for the group membership to be updated).

  • OEM to SCOM connector: Questions on installation and use

Just a few questions/concers about this connector. Mainly: has anyone used this connector?
    1. The install documentation appears to not be found on the Oracle Site and the connector isn't in the Microsoft pack download forum. if anyone knows a link to the install docs that actually works, I'd appreciate the link.
    2. The connector seems to be a .jar file. When opened it appears to be installing/connecting to web services...is this (web services) for the OEM communication from SCOm to OEM?
    3. There appears to be a SCOM agent bundled with the installation (jar file) and an xml file called 'OracleEnterprisemanager.Alert.Creator.xml'. i assume if we already have a SCOm agent instlaled you dont' need to instll the one that came with the connector? Does the 'OracleEnterprisemanager.Alert.Creator.xml' file get imported into SCOM (I assume so?)
I also wanted to know if anyone's using this connector and if it's stable or causes any unexpected issues on the OEM or SCOM side.
    Any input is appreciated!

The installation guide is available here:

  • 2012 upgrade question, number of servers, SCOM, Forefront

I have a bit of confusion on how many servers I need to migrate from SCCM 2007 to 2012. I read many articles about upgrading the primary site side by side and the two DP servers I am using now. I am confused about SCOM, FSP and the 2003 Forefront Server.
All other server are currently 2008R2.
So my question, will I have to keep the Forefront and SCOM server or do these get integrated into the SCCM 2012 server?

Forefront Server has been discontinued and replaced by System Center Endpoint Protection Protection (SCEP). This is a ConfigMgr role now. SCOM is unrelated. You maintain that separately.

  • SCOM 2012 - Question : Company knowledge

    Hi everyone ..
I have a question about SCOM. We're using "Company Knowledge" to specify instructions on monitors / rules and my question is:
Is it possible to specify differents "Company Knowledge" depending of servers on a same monitor/rule? Or to use a variable (name server) directly in the word text ? Because according to the server, we need not resolve alerts in the same way.
    Thank you !

  • Question about user accounts in multi domain scom design

    hello,
there is a root forest with 30 child domains. fully trusted. we want to have a MS in each of the child domains and RMS in the root. so each MS in child domains report to the RMS which holds the SQL as well. since we want to use a single account for all the
SQL and SCOM related tasks I would like to know what is the best method to achive this process?
I want to use a single (Domain User) account for all the SCOM and SQL related task in all of the child domains and management servers.
the design is scom 2007 r2.
    any ideas?

is that enough? I am worriyng about this account not to have enough access on SQL or SDK and ...
dos this user needs to be local admin on all management server although the management servers are joined to another domains?
    can you please clarify this.

  • Question on upgrading to SCOM 2012 R2 form SCOM 2012 SP1

    Hello!
    I planned upgrade to SCOM 2012 R2 form SCOM 2012 SP1.
Should I install any or last update rollup package to my SCOM 2012 SP1, before upgrading to SCOM 2012 R2 ?

It is highly recommend that you has install most updated CU before upgrade SCOM 2012 sp1 1 to SCOm 2012 R2 but it is not necessary.  You should view NEPA PFE Team blog that demostrate how to upgrade SCOM 2012 SP1 with CU4 to SCOM 2012 R2.

  • POODLE vulnerability question SCOM 2007 R2

    Hi,
I was curious, does the latest vulnerability found in sslv3 afect SCOM 2007 agent monitoring? and unix agents specificly
    Are there patches?

Your SCOM server would decide the communication type as the UNIX/Linux agents use only one way 'pull' communications. The SCOM server pulls for the agent data. The agent never initiates the communication.
There are patches for Windows servers so make sure your SCOM server has the latest updates but I believe the Windows server will figure out what is available and negotiate that.

    -Steve

  • SCOM 2012 R2 UR4 upgrade question - where exactly is the UNIX/Linux agent?

I am practicing the UR4 on a test |SCOM environment (my first upgrade) and our UNIX Admins have requested the "UNIX/Linux agent" so they can create packages to upgrade the UNIX/Linux agents when the time comes.
I have downloaded all the UR4 updates/software. Where exactly is the agent for UNIX/Linux machines?
I opened the "Update Rollup 4 for Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 - Operations Manager Agent (KB2992020)" folder and I saw the following agents:
    amd64-agent.msp
    i386-agent.msp
Are one of these the UNIX/Linux agents?
I know I'm overlooking something here since this is my first time. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hello,
    After deploy UR4: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2992020
Installation instructions for Operations Manager - UNIX and Linux Monitoring (Management Pack Update)
To install the updated monitoring packs and agents for UNIX and Linux operating systems, follow these steps:
Apply Update Rollup 4 to your System Center 2012 R2 Operations Manager environment.
    Download the
    updated management packs
          (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9f947878-6bf6-48a1-adb1-3cc4c2e5d4af)
    for System Center 2012 R2.
Install the management pack update package to extract the management pack files.
Import the updated management pack for each version of Linux or UNIX that you are monitoring in your environment.
Upgrade each agent to the latest version by using either the Update-SCXAgent Windows PowerShell cmdlet or the UNIX/Linux Agent Upgrade Wizard in the Administration pane of the Operations Console.

  • Business Services Configuration in SCSM or SCOM?

    Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for someone with both SCOM 2012 and SCSM 2012 experience who can advise the best and/or preferred method of creating/populating Business Services in Service Manager 2012...
The reason that I ask is that once we have a rock solid process for logging Incidents and Service Request, our next major priorities will be to get "basic" reporting & change management working.
Change Management will obviously use the Business Services in the usual way - to manage changes that will affect the business service, whereas the level of reporting we want to obtain from the "basic" reporting is what Incidents have been occurring
(possibly which categories they were logged under) and which Business service the Incidents Affected.
Now, this is where I'm in two minds:
On one hand a "non-technical" Microsoft field engineer suggested to create business service "place holders" and then configure SCSM to use these "dummy" (non-configured) business services for reporting purposes.
On the other hand we have SCOM 2012 and I believe the preferred method is to import SCOM distributed Apps as Business services which has many additional long term benefits like being able to manage the end-to-end "Availability" of a Business Service
    etc.
My biggest issue with creating "place holder" Business Services in SCSM is the amount of time it will take to configure all the templates with the "dummy" services only to have to reconfigure everything once we Import the "Real"
Business Services from distributed apps configured in SCOM. It seems like a LOT of double handling to me.
So, my question is basically (bare with me because I have VERY little SCOM knowledge) is there a way to create an MP in SCOM which would contain a "Distributed Application Template" (VERY basic Config) which can simply be duplicated MANY times
and change it's name to match each of our Business Services. Once done the MP containing the Distributed Apps can be imported to SCSM and then the Business Service would still be "Dummy" blank place holders but they've also be the legitimate/actual
Distributed apps that we will want to be using later down the track.
If we went down this path and we kept an unsealed copy of this management pack, would it also be possible to go back and make changes to the MANY distributed apps to update the CI relationship information in SCSM?
Hope this makes sense... basically I thought it would make more sense to create the "dummy" Business Services in SCOM and import them to SCSM for use now and in the future rather than create the "dummy" business services in SCSM now only
to replace them with new imported Business Services from SCOM.
Your thoughts, ideas and guidance will be GREATLY appreciated.

  • A question about Logical Disk Performace collection Rules and how the Data is displayed in a Report view

    Hello
I am currently on SCOM 2007 R2 CU6 and Window Server Operating System MP version 6.0.6989.0 (I cannot use the latest version of the MP as we still have some Windows 2000 Servers we need to support, yes I know :( )
Any way the issue is, I have never found the Logical Disk performance counter data very reliable from SCOM.
For example, I have a Windows 2008 R2 Server and when looking at a local Logical Disk (which holds an SQL temp DB on a busy SQL Server) and look at the performance counter
The SCOM collection rule is called "Collection Rule for Average Disk Seconds per Transfer"
The actual Windows Perfmon counter is called "Avg. Disk Bytes/Transfer"
if you look at the description of the above Perfmon counter it is described as
"Avg. Disk Bytes/Transfer is the average number of bytes transferred to or from the disk during write or read operations."
The problem I have is as follows:
The resulting SCOM performance chart over several days (which has a scale ox 1x) states the value never reach 3 (e.g. maximum wa s 2.7 say). I cannot believe the a drive holding the tempDB databases for a busy SQL Server does not transfer more then 2.7 "bytes"
of data at a given to to its tempDB databases!
Indeed when I look at Permon on the Server and looks at this counter over say 20 minutes or so, the figure is often in the 10,000 or 30,000 bytes etc. It does fall back to 0 (zero) momentarily but mostly it is in the 1000s, or 10,000s etc.
Therefore when my boss says show me the "Avg. Disk Bytes/Transfer" and SCOM says it has not exceeded 2.7 over the last business week (i.e. the chart never peak above this value on the chart with scale 1x) he naturally does not believe it!!
Any advice please regarding the above. Is it the fact if the counter ever falls to zero it messes up the SCOM report charts?
    Thanks
    AAnotherUser
    AAnotherUser__

Create your own collection rule, to mirror the sample times, and what not.  Look at the data from your rule vs the mp default rule.  It probably has to do with the chart scale imho.

  • Which version of SCOM is this ?????

    Hi All,
Question may sound silly, But i don't know a answer for it hence raised this question.
I was reading this blog and found this type of a SCOM which i have never seen in the below link.
    http://www.opsmanager.se/2012/11/06/text-log-monitoring-part-1/
There is no Administration, Authoring, Monitoring TAB at all ?
Does anyone have any idea which version of SCOM is this ?
    Gautam.75801

This is authoring console screen capture and not a operations console. This is the reason why you cannot see Administration, Authoring, Monitoring TAB .
If you want to create a text file log monitoring using SCOM, you should refer to the following link
