Score Editor bug: syncopating a note disturbs line layout

In the example below, the instrumental part with max 2 bars per line has been created with the Layout Tool, and then the selection saved as a Score Set ( which i hope locks all the page details in place).

I then noticed that the red circled note is not displayed correctly - it should be a dotted eighth note and duly click on it with my Syncopate note command.
This then produces the following effect: it crunches up the bars and disturbs the line layout which was already set, cramming 3 bars onto the line above as in the example below.

Any solutions appreciated/workflow suggestions.. or is this just "..another L8 Score Editor bug.. wasting more of 2009"
PS Any suggestions as how to get the images to display in the post - as opposed to appear a link? cheers

i should be enjoying my holiday but i couldn't help myself...
there are a couple of fixes for this.
first, try cutting the regions somewhere to force a redraw.
second, if no form of cutting or reformatting works, try copy and pasting the midi into a fresh autoload on the intel.
particularly if the file was created pre 7.2. there can be compatibility issues between ppc and intel.

• Score Editor: Force Syncopation and Note Alignment issue

Two issues here:
1 - Is it possible to get the A in the Left Hand to align with the Right Hand Chord on the second half of Beat 3?.... Dont understand why the problem is here and it looks dreadful to read
2 - Upper Example is with Force Syncopation ( ie following Ski's past rule that he leaves Syncopation Unchecked in the inspector and Forces Sync on individual note groups).
Lower Example is without Force Syncopation.
In both examples I cannot get what I would like it to display which is dotted quarter notes in the Right Hand Chord tied across the imaginary middle of the bar line to the notes on Beat 3
All suggestions welcome

Just to say - the Layout Tool cured it.. just moved the A bass note along to the right till it lined up with the chord above.. (credit to iS in 'another place')
Still havent found a way to split the first chord in the right hand over an invisible barline in the middle.
ie with the first note a dotted quarter note tied to the 3rd beat..
Can Logic do this?

• Score editor: bug?

Bug#1: when using command+r (repeat); If the original material to be repeated contains a tuplet, the tuplet doesn't appear in the copies.
Bug#2: when inserting the tuplet: in the tuplet window> hitting enter (ok) doesn't work

bug#1: does not happen here. works as expected. make sure that you have set 'beat' rather than 'auto' when you make copies.
bug#2: confirmed.

• Score Editor

I'm using my grand piano with midi capability to input data into my Logic express program.
The rhythmic values that I play are always changing as a normal course of improvising. So 1 measure might have triplets, 16ths. *I play 8ths that are played in a swing feel, which should be notated EVENLY!* ARGH!
I'm very confused about how to get these values to display properly in the score editor.
If I play a line into the program with mixed rhythmic values I can't seem to get the score editor to display the result the way I want to see it. Is there a way to do this? An easy way?
It appears that a great deal of editing is required to edit live playing to get a readable score in the score editor. I realize that playing accurately is crucial but it seems that I'm stuck even when I play accurately.
Along the same lines, in a *piano score* can the S*PLIT between bass and treble clefs* be changed from one area of the score to another. Sometimes left hand comping part goe above C3 and sometimes the right hand will go BELOW C3. How to a display this in a piano score would be great to know. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

That would be pretty slick, since Logic already does guess what chord you're playing. But to the best of my knowledge, the answer is no. I could be wrong, but I don't think Express does that.
However, it appears that Logic Pro might be able to do it, as of 7.1.
Here's Google's cache of the 7.1 notes for Pro
You can insert chords from the global Chord Track into your score, and print them that way. Since Express doesn't have a chord track, it can't do this.

• Ties, Durations, And Volumes In Score Editor

I am trying to tie two notes of different pitch, using the method of extending the duration of a first note to lap over the second. While this produces a tie and an extended or (sort of) legato sound if the notes are the same pitch, and produces a proper graphic tie in the score editor, it does not do this when I attempt to tie two notes of different pitches. In that case, a tie is produced by the Score Editor, but the extended duration first note is duplicated in the second note position, along with the original second note—so three notes tied! Clearly this is not what I want. It occurred to me that this method of extending the first note's duration was doing exactly the same thing when the notes are the same, but I don't see it show up in the editor.
Here are two images of what I am seeing in the Score Editor
Bottom pair of notes—first extended and tie created.
Top pair, first note duration not extended. No tie.
Here, I've extended the first note in the top pair, to get
the tie, but as you see it duplicated the note in the
second position too, and of course changed the sound
from what it should be.
So, questions:
1. Am I doing the right thing, achieving ties by extending the durations of notes in this manner? It seems to work just fine when the notes are the same, but I am wondering if, instead of generating an extended single note, I am getting a doubled note (or louder note). It seems this is the case. Is there a better way to make ties (both in sound and in the editor) without doubling notes?
2. How do you do ties between different pitched notes—again without generating a third note? Is this handled differently than tying to notes of the same pitch?
Thanks.

Just to add:
Most instruments can only manage a slur between notes of different pitches... on a brass instrument it's using a different valve fingering with out tonguing the note but there's still a slight bump with the new fingering. The exception of course is the trombone, because of a slide that can actually glissando between notes. Valve instruments can bend and half-valve notes but that a special technique. A piano or organ can't do what you describe... orchestral string instruments (as well as fretless electric bass) can but that's a function of the instrument and is usually written as a slur with bowing instructions.
It's never written as different pitches tied.

• Arranging Big Band Charts with Score Editor

Ahhh, the score editor is so untuitive. The way it's programmed, so that you have to space the note just right to get the desired result. And sometimes ya gotta switch the notes and try again and then retry... Ayayayaya. Well, anyways, my question is: Is there a way I can prefrerize the score editor so that the notes/rests I select are put in, and that I can make my own ties (the ties are reallly frusturating). I'm arranging a chart for my big band, so.... go Logic!
Cheers!

Have partially answered my own question- have worked out how to change note sizes to the smaller cue-type display, not quite sure how to designate them non-playing though still appearing in the score though.

• Message editor bug: Ctrl-Z and Ctrl-Y not working

Hi!
I am writing a reply, where I am inserting a lot from Word-documents and web-pages.
When I pressed Ctrl-Z, a large block of text, including an inserted quote, disappeared, and when I pressed Ctrl-Y it did NOT reappear, so there must be a bug or two in the message editor.
I am not sure what else to tell about it, but it's kind of shocking.
I have noticed before, that when you use Ctrl-Z and Ctrl-Y the editor-window does not scroll up and down to show you WHERE you are undoing/redoing something. That is also quite confusing!
And BTW: When you mark something, there is no cursor, to tell you if you are at the end of one line or at the beginning of the next. That is also quite annoying.
Best regards,
Henrik R.

When you insert your word document are you using Paste without formatting (Ctrl+Shift+V).
All bets are off if your pasting the horribly contaminated data from a Microsoft office document without using a text only filter. It is an unfortunate fact of life that an email containing text pasted from Microsoft word can cause a virus alert due to it's internal references to OCX controls.
It also contains complex data structures that are only meaningful to Microsoft office. However they are more than enough to scramble other editors as they often do not form valid HTML. Just another occurrence of Microsoft "innovating"

• How do you draw a tie of two notes in the score editor window

How do you draw a simple tie in the score editor window of Logic Pro 10 ; two quarter notes together, an eighth up-beat accross a bar line into the next measure etc? I can't find the answer in videos, help manual.  Please give a step by step how to do it.
It's hard to believe that a program like Logic, that has more information than the New York Public Library, does not have a simple solution for tieing notes. Maybe Logic XI will have one, or "Logicians" can speak to Sibelius for a more "note-worthy" way to solving the problem so that the score editor can be more accessible for editing purposes for those that read and write manuscript. Lew Traver

Hi
Ties are generally automatically created as necessary. Simply adjust the length of the note in the Score (using DurationBars or the Inspector), or in the Piano Roll or Event list.

• Score editor: command z, bug?

hi,
I have a score with different time signatures: 3/8, 4/4, 7/7, 5/16, etc.
Every time I press command+Z logic erases nearly all of my time signatures (and the last action I wanted to "undo" it isn't of course the addition of the time signatures logic erases )
Is it a bug?
thanks

Hi Ko be
I just tried opening in L8 an L7 song which has several key signature changes 4/4 to 7/4 to 4/3 and Command + Z doesnt erase them...
I would be pretty sure that your problem is one of those bugs which occurs from a corruption within a Logic 8 document.. but is not a 'generic' L8 defect.
L8 score editor - although improved in some ways - has driven me nuts with really simple weird bugs which L7 never used to do .. eg:
• clicking on a chord symbol ( to bring up the box for editing different elements root/bass note etc) sometimes takes ages to activate - or when it does then the whole part disappears and you are left with a grey page which says " there is nothing in the score editor"
• another intermittent bug is rubber banding a group of chord symbols to cut and paste simple, or drag alter alignment - just does not not work and the chords dont let themselves be selected and go into flashing mode. This is unbelievably irritating especially when you are expecting something so simple to work as before
• the other method of selecting - holding shift and clicking on chord symbols to select a group doesnt work
All this kind of stuff intermittent... ie you never know which Logic Song it is going to start behaving badly in

• Score editor inserting notes.

Hi Everyone
Hope you're all keeping well. Please can some one help to explain how to insert a quaver note on a staff at the beginning of a bar or on the first beat of the bar with a minim on the same beat beneath it, I do know how to use the separation tool but I am having difficulty writing a quaver on the first beat instead I keep getting a crotchet. If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it take care.
Tumahawk.

There are two questions here: i) regarding the size of the note, quaver/crotchet etc ... depends on how the Score settings are displayed. Best thing is to read the manual if you want to do this in the Score Editor there are so many ways to do it and you need to get familiar with a couple of regular operations.
i) ie the Song Position Line.. get used to placing this exactly in the bar where you want to insert a note.
ii) Also the Event Editor: if you drag a note from the side of the score editor you need to look at the Event Editor to see exactly where you are placing it.
iii) If you are using a midi keyboard to input the notes, then you need to set up key commands that would make the SPL move by the right increments, ie shift SPL a quaver, a crotchet etc.. and become familiar with the Key Command that shifts the SPL etc
However if you just want to insert a note and drag it to the right size then the best place is the Matrix editor where you can see exactly how long the note length is... though the display of the note also depends on what your score settings are, so you may put in a quaver and if the Score Style show only crotchets, it will display a quaver as a crotchet.
Regarding your second question about putting a minim on the same beat of the bar below a quaver.. you will need to explore the concept of Polyphonic voices and assign the line with the minim to a different midi channel
This may all sound a bit complicated but the more familiar you get with the basics of the Score Editor the easier it will get

• Score Editor: long ledger lines

If anyone can tell me how to correct this I would be most grateful.

This is an L8 problem. If I open an identical document in L7 I do not get these long lines
This is a snapshot of a PDF printed by the Score Editor to desk top. If I print the part direct from Logic 8 the same problem occurs

Hi Brett - the answer to this issue was originally given by Rohan Stevenson on Logic Pro Help. No one answered it here.
The long ledger lines are due to use of Third Party fonts. Look in Logic Preferences>Score Preferences and you will see a box which asks if you want to use 3rd Party fonts ( in my case Sonata was available). As soon as I unchecked this box, the problem disappeared.

• Notes between Bass clef and Treble clef in Score Editor?

I'm trying to enter the notes between the Bass clef and Treble clef in the Score Editor, but Logic's defaut settings won't allow it.
Basically I need to enter the notes C, D, E and F, right above the bass clef. Technically speaking I would need 2 more ledger lines on top of the Bass clef.
Please help.

Hi,
set the bass clef to another MIDI channel. Maybe treble MIDI ch 1, bass MIDI ch2. Now select the notes you want to show up in the bass clef and change their channel to 2.
In the Notation Edtor, select CTRL-ALT-CMD-S. There you can edit the properties of each separate staff. Scroll to the right: The "easy" way is to set another split point between bass and treble clef. The other way is to assign separate channels.

• Is it possible to change the length of a note in the score editor?

I thought I saw somewhere that it was now possible to adjust the length of a note in the score editor graphically, i.e. by clicking on the note and somehow adjust its length directly to change it from 1/4 note to 1/8 (for example).
I don't want to do this by going over to the "Length" dialog on the left because I hate having to switch from thinking in terms of music notation and then having to think (temporarily) in MIDI ticks per beat, etc.
I must admit that I'm finding it extremely frustrating to simply enter music into Logic in a score....I thought this was supposed to be one of its strengths but it seems to be providing amazing capabilities at the expense of ease of use for beginners.

greetings dh... are you into Key Commands? There are two which will help you do the above in a trice:
• Nudge Region/Event Length Right by SMPTE Frame
• Nudge Region/Event Length Left by SMPTE Frame
I set mine to the simple letter o and n
- I click on a note and press o repeatedly.. it grows and grows longer and longer
– I click on a note and press n repeatedly.. it shrinks and shrinks shorter and shorter
All by little increments
If you keep a Piano Roll window open while you do this, you can see the length do this exactly
man, it is VERY quick and handy for changing the length of notes
It really helps to have a view of the midi Piano Roll to cross check the exact length and position of the notes.
Check out the Key Commands:
• Set Next Higher division
• Set Next lower division
These change the note value in the transport bar near the time signature. Your time signature may be 4/4 but the "grid" on which the notes are appear in the Piano Roll could be displayed in quarter, 8th or 16th notes. If you experiment with these commands, then you can match the note lengths easily to the grid display visually (with the above nudge length commands)
Also - you may like to experiment with the following 3 KEY Key Commands:
1 • Nudge Region/Event Position Right by Nudge Value
2 • Nudge Region/Event Position Left by Nudge Value
This will move your selected notes forward in time or back in time according to the
value that is set in the Transport bar - say it is 16ths .. then each press of the key will move the notes a 16th
or if the value is 8th notes, then each press of the key forward or backwards will move the selected notes forward or back by this amount
... amazingly useful when you are taking a whole phrase and pasting it somewhere else, or if say you started to write a phrase in the Score Editor and you started on the wrong beat.. then you just Nudge back and forth
3 • Set Nudge Value to Division
.. this will in a trice change change the Nudge Value to whatever Note division value is set in the Transport bar
HTH and forgive me if I have given you too much information
..problem is I spent too much time in the Transport Bar in Los Angeles last year drinking with the iSchwartz and other Logic reprobrates... you should join us some time

• Some Drum notes not displaying in Score editor

I have a problem with a project in getting a correct display of the drum notes in the Score editor despite the playback being OK. I have a mapped drum instrument set up with an identcal structure to that on another project which is working properly. This includes the staff type, the establishment of the drum groups, the relative note positions etc. The difference I have found when comparing the event editor contents between the project which does dispaly correctly and the one the doesn't is that on the one that does, each note is the event list shows the drum type e.g. ride cym, snare, kick etc. whereas as in the project with the display problems, the event display for each note simply shows the word 'Note' even for the parts of the track which do display correctly.
Can anyone advise where the problem could be. I've spent the best part of the day trying to sort this out and now am at a loss as to what to try next !
thanks for any advice.
