Score mode

In score mood the default score-quantize setting keeps being wrong. I can change the default but when I start logic again the setting is gone. Can anybody help my with this?

  • How to display demisemiquavers in score mode?

    Hi.
I have demisemiquavers on the midi editor (piano roll), the display quantize window set to 32, and still the score keeps on showing the notes as semi-quaver clusters. Any tips on how to do it? Thanks.

Thanks for pointing that out. Still, it wouldn't work.
    But I found the problem!
In the inspector window, the "Interpretation" option is ticked. It has to be unticked.
And, while selecting the quantization in the Display Quantize window, the notes to be seen have to be highlighted / selected in score mode.
    Weird thing, but it worked!

  • Clef limitation in score mode

I am using Garage Band '09 with OS X Yosemite.  I'd like to have my piano students play their original compositions on my midi keyboard and have garageband notate it in score mode.  A huge limitation is the middle C cutoff between treble and bass clefs.  We need the ability to notate below middle C in treble clef and above middle C in bass clef.  I cannot find a solution to this anywhere.  Please tell me it is possible.  Thanks!

  • LE7:Score Layout:Global Format:Maximum Bars per Line - Line Break Bug!

    Hello
This problem occurs in Logic Express version 7.
(I am using MacOS version 10.4.2 on an eMac)
I am currently compiling and editing a large score for a big band composition consisting of 22 parts:
    Flute 1
    Flute 2
    Clarinet 1
    Clarinet 2
    Alto Sax 1
    Alto Sax 2
    Tenor Sax 1
    Tenor Sax 2
    Baritone Sax
    Trombone 1
    Trombone 2
    Trombone 3
    Trombone 4
    Trumpet 1
    Trumpet 2
    Trumpet 3
    Trumpet 4
    Guitar
    Keyboard
    Electric Bass
    Percussion 1 (Kit)
    Percussion 2 (Aux)
I am creating the score in a separate file, and I am combining parts into 1 stave each by instrument like this:
    Flute 1 & 2
    Clarinet 1 & 2
    Alto Sax 1 & 2
    Tenor Sax 1 & 2
    Baritone Sax
    Trombone 1 - 4
    Trumpet 1 - 4
    Guitar
    Keyboard (2 staves)
    Bass
    Percussion
Each instrument, with the exception of keyboard which has 2 staves, consists of one stave, making up systems of twelve staves each. By sizing down each score style to 2,
I have managed to fit 2 systems onto each page, therefore significantly reducing the amount of paper needed.
The problem comes when organising the layout of my score,
in particular, the line breaks. Using layout:global format, I have limited the maximum number of bars per line to 8, both in the page edit and normal score mode.
I am trying to divide up my score so that there are 8 bars per system. Using the white arrow tool, I am dragging bars up and down in order to achieve this.
However, when I get 30 odd bars in, I discover a system with 12 bars crammed into it - and even printing it off, it is clear that the system could benefit with less bars; the notation is squashed up together and not very easy to read.
    THIS IS THE ACTUAL PROBLEM:
So I tried using the white arrow to move the last 4 bars down onto the next system, and a bug occurs where I end up with about 20 bars on the system, oddly distorted, the first few bars of which are squashed up together at the beginning of the line, and the last bar of which is stretched far off the right hand side of the page out of view. Then the next 20 or so bars are no where to be seen (probably far off the right hand side of the page) before the system below.
If you dont know what I am talking about, I could provide a screenshot if you request.
I have tried everything to get 8 bars on that particular system; dragging the stretched bar downwards, dragging squashed bars downward, moving bars down 1 by 1, moving bars onto the system above, moving bars away from the system below (to make room for the 4 bars that I want to move from above), adding more bars and dragging them down, but none of these methods have worked. I am either stuck with 12 bars crammed onto one system and 4 bars on the next or an oddly distorted version of the system which cannot possibly be read. Even when I settle with the unsatistactory former, I encounter further problems on subsequent systems below, some systems of which are already distorted.
All I want is to have 8 bars per system, it should not be too much to ask! The layout:global format:maximum-bars-per-line calculation seems to be redundant, even when I reset the default line breaks - it just does not automatically set 8 bars per line, which it should do. Is there not an option to determine bars individually by number onto their respective lines, without having to use the white arrow graphic layout tool?
The problem is extremely frustrating, and it is preventing me from completing, presenting and handing in a score for my university music composition.
I have no other score producing software, and starting it
from scratch on paper is going to take me weeks, because it consists of 830 12/8 bars in 22 parts, and I need to get it ready by next term!
Any help would be extremely helpful and much appreciated, especially a patch or a useful way round. It could be related to memory, or hard drive space, as I have experienced similar problems in the past, where my score has been stretched off the page during a time when I have had little disk space...and this is a very large piece of music which might stretch the score capabilities of Logic.
If so, has anyone got any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Rory

    nope just cutting should work.
here are some things to try:
    1. try assigning a different score style. for the regions. duplicate and then adjust the default ones if necessary.
    2. try creating a new instrument set. in fact delete them and make a new one (use the key command: create instrument set from selected)
    3. it may be a formatting problem so check:
in global layout constant spacing (try 8 or 9) and proportional spacing (try 45 or so). then try factory defaults.
    4. try copying and pasting the midi into a brand new region and looking at the score for that.
    5. try fiddling with the layout tool drqagging bars up or down.
normally simply cutting the region of just one object is enough to force a redraw. maybe try it on all of the regions. what happens when you double click on a region?

  • Selecting multiple tracks for score purposes

I posted an earlier question about how to have the score reflect multiple tracks. What I have discovered is that the Score mode only displays the selected track, although the Piano Roll mode, which I have used for composing, will display all selected regions. I have researched the forum entries and no one seems to have an answer as to how to select multiple tracks. Apple-A doesn't work on tracks, and shift-click or apple-click doesn't either. What is the secret? Previous replies to others' similar questions actually questioned why you need it anyway. Multiple track scoring needs it!
    Help, please.
    Herb

Fox, I appreciate the time you must take to answer all these questions. I did what you suggested, but it still is not displaying the two instrument tracks I set up in a score set. Some more interesting phenomena: I tried merging regions, but got a composite staff that wouldn't work. When I undid the merge, an amazing thing happened: The score showed both parts! But as soon as I selected a region, the score reverted to the one track. The only other clue to the problem is that the two original regions were set up as midi, but the notes were entered with the step entry keyboard.
Any ideas? Should I dump preferences and restart (an old Final Cut Pro technique)?

  • Is Logic Express 8.0.2 stable?

I was working in the Score mode last night and suddenly got a prompt that Logic had to quit and then it did and was asked if I wanted to reboot Logic and said yes. I have no idea why this happened, but I did get a text page as to why and I didn't keep it because I didn't understand the language except the Core Audio part......is this app stable? I remember I had an old version of Adobe Premiere and it used to crash at times. I also have Digital Performer and it never crashes. So I'm just wondering what to expect or if there's something I ought to do to make it as stable as possible.

This is purely subjective, as I have heard nothing authoritative and actually nothing personal here and there:
I don't think the occasional crash is due to not having enough memory or a fast enough computer. My subjective viewpoint is it may have to do with secondary applications that are running, I use QuicKeys, which is always on for example. If you've used your computer for a few years you install and forget about all kinds of stuff along the way. Maybe that's not you.
But overall my advice is don't worry. Just go for it. I had most of my crashes (I've only had a few) in the first few weeks of running it when I generally didn't know what I was doing anyway. So if one can crash a program consistently doing one thing or another it's a bug, and they fix it or you avoid it. In the past few months I've had no problems whatever.
That's about all I can provide.
The whole buffer-size thing needs some others to pipe up. I have had slow operation, latency problems and other such stuff I've been working through, but I have a PPC G5, a 2.1g machine and it's wearing out. So there will be a new machine in my future, and the full Logic Pro as well.
My personal experience is--amazingly--that the buffer doesn't WANT the whole magilla. Read the manual on the topic and internalize it. Mess with it. I've begun to have better results with smaller buffers but don't know why.

  • Corruption of MIDI Melody Track

    Background:
I loaded a MIDI file that I created on a Korg PA1 X Pro keyboard. I added a MIDI melody track. It played fine for several days, but then stopped playing when I start the song, and no MIDI data is generated for this track. If I click on the notes in score mode they produce a sound, and the MIDI note shows in the Logic task bar. The melody track gets a small circle at the beginning. I can copy this to a new track and it plays for a few days, but then it stops again. This track does not play even if I assign it to a different keyboard; no MIDI data is generated.
Resolution: How can I get around this problem, or resolve it?
    Thank you

Thanks Eric. I didn't realize that it would be this simple. The mute button is highlighted when it is used to mute a track. When you press the M key, this button is not affected, but a circle is put at the beginning of the track, so this is what I need to watch for.

  • How do i transpose midi notes but maintain the key?

I'd like to take a midi track and shift it up to the next mode (ie, ii instead of I) while following the key. What is the simplest way to do this? In other words, I'd like to "transpose" but maintain the key. C-E-G would become D-F-A (not D-F#-A, as just transposing would do). I see there's a "Diatonic Insert" for the Score mode, but I'd like "Diatonic Edit" or something like that.
    Using Logic 8.
Thanks in advance for any tips, and I apologize if I missed this answer somewhere in the forum already.

I found a contentious discussion from Feb 2010 that seemed to suggest this was not an available feature ("and why would you need it??!! Just play it again!!"). But if anyone knows a way, I'd be grateful.
For now I've just ended up dragging the notes up and then manually adjusting in Score mode the errant notes that went out of key.

  • TS5426 Logic Pro X templates missing

I've installed additional orchestral content and the Orchestral and Music for Picture templates are still unavailable. Am I missing something?
Custom templates also do not appear when I save them.
    Logic Pro X 10.0.7

Is it supposed to be for 7 string guitar? You'll have to read this:
    http://help.apple.com/logicpro/mac/10/#lgcp204e230e
and especially the chapter Determine the string assignment. It sometimes does react strangely (like not showing E6) I must admit. Start a new project in score mode and try to enter a scale from the lowest string up to the highest string. Now change midi channels, in the event editor, observing how this provokes different possibilities of identical notes on the fretboard.
    Have a nice day!

  • Step Input Keyboard not scoring properly

I am new to Logic Express, but an experienced user of other notation software and garageband. In Score mode, I have the keyboard input set to quarter notes, but when I click on a key I get the right tone but the length is shown as a sixteenth rest and two tied notes: sixteenth and eighth.
    Any ideas why?

    Hi,
    1. did you check the position indicator is at the correct position? Maybe it was back or forth one sixteenth not. This usually occurs if you input the midi data with the notation view. I'd suggest using the piano roll for input since it has a much more precise display for positioning the position pointer
    2. There are many ways to change the display of the midi data in the note sheet. Probably if you change to the piano roll, you'll find you have input a full quarter note, but since it doesn't start at the correct position, the Score Editor displays it in another way. You have many choices to change this display. Take your time to get used to it - the score editor is one of the most demanding things to learn in logic.
    Cheers,
    Fox

  • Chapter Markers using GarageBand

I'm posting this in both Apple TV and Quicktime forums.
I have successfully used GarageBand 3.0.4 to easily and quickly add chapter markers to H.264 Apple TV movies. Much faster than the QT Pro text list method.
Started with an iMovie containing titles and chapters, exported to Apple TV format (m4v file using codec H.264). Opened GarageBand using New Movie Score, set preferences to Export>Movie Full Quality. In Control menu, turned off Snap to Grid. Selected the video track, and track editor allows adding/naming chapters.
Don't worry if the video & audio tracks don't match up. I used my iMovie project timestamps for the chapter times in GarageBand, then verified by watching in GB video preview window. If one has 5 second titles, it's not an issue to have to mess with tweaking the exact timing. One can also add sounds, picts, etc with GB, although I prefer iMovie for better control & tools.
The Share>Export to Disc saving process is quick, and yields the same quality H.264 file with a slightly bigger size. Imports to iTunes, syncs with Apple TV, and shows the chapter titles on the timeline when viewed on the tv (same quality as original ATV movie).
The following are links to some previous forum discussions about chapters:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5265574#5265574
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5266201#5266201

Additional note. While the GarageBand chapters and audio modifications have worked great in several H.264 movies, I was apparently wrong about adding photos or mixing in short title clips in the video track. The GB video editing is too basic, and can handle only one video in the video track when using Movie Score mode (might be ok in Podcast mode, which is unacceptable for Apple TV quality).
Best way is to get the movie totally set with titles etc in iMovie or FCP, then export as Apple TV movie, which can be imported to GB for chapters. I have noted that the chapter timing needs to be slightly ahead of the apparent desired spot in the GB video track (15-30 frames), in order for it to hit correctly when viewing on the Apple TV. Using 5-6 second title sections makes it easy since one can place the chapter marker anyplace in the title area.

  • Viewing different layers in a track

If I recorded 3 overdub takes in a track (example hihats, followed by 2nd layer snares and bass drum as 3rd recording), Can i view it as in 3 seperated layers in a track? Does it allow me to choose to view it as 1 merged layer and seperated takes in score mode as well?
    Thanks

Are you talking about MIDI? If you do:
In the Piano Roll, if you enable Region Colors in the view menu and select multiple regions, you can see them all, and each of them will be shown with events in the same color as the region color. Is that what you're looking for? (You must be in yellow Link mode for this to happen, which - if I remember right - is the default mode.)
In Score, you can double click on the background and see all the regions in the arrangement, if you want.
Or - you can select multiple regions in Arrage before you go to the Score editor with Command-3: then Logic autimatically will make an "Instrument Set" for you, so only the regions/tracks you had selected before you enetered score will be shown.

  • Score window in page mode shows only part of the composition

I have an on going issue in Logic X: The score in page mode mostly refuses to show more than a couple of pages.
There does not seem to be a logical reason for this. Deleting the score window and replacing it by another one shows the same issue,
    but on a different page.

    Hi Peter,
Based on your description, it may be a compatibility issue. I suggest that you first check the issue in IE Compatibility View mode. Please refer to the following steps to troubleshooting this issue:
    1. Launch the IE, and press Alt+T to select the Tools.
    2. Click Compatibility View settings.
    3. Check the “Display intranet sites in Compatibility View” option, and click Close.
Alternatively, please to do this, click Alt+T and select Compatibility View or add the http://<ServerName> URL to the Compatibility View list.
There is an article about IE Compatibility, you can refer to it.

  • Score & Stage reposition when playing in authoring mode

    Hi All,
I set the workspace to the default panel set - score on left, stage on right, cast on bottom.
Whenever I hit the "Play" button on the control panel, the two panels - score/stage undock and reposition.  The stage gets much larger and even goes from 50% (which I set manually) back to 100%.
    <sigh>
    Any thoughts?
    Carl

    Well, I figured it out.
I have some code in the prepareMovie event handler that resizes the _movie.stage.rect.  When this happens the authoring tool changes.
    I put in a "
    if
    (_system.environmentPropList.runMode != "Author"
and this fixed the problem.  Strange, I had scripts disabled and it ran this handler anyway.
    Thanks Anyway!

  • Questions on Track Transpose and Score Layout

    Hi all -
I'm posting these questions for my 14-yr old son who is the Logic Express user, so apologies as I might be asking the questions the wrong way. :-)
My son is writing an arrangement of the song Friday (Rebecca Black) :-) for his Middle School Marching Band. It sounds pretty cool so far, btw, and I have to admit the song is quite catchy. Haha.
Question 1: Is there a way to transpose a track independently of other tracks? As you know, some marching band instruments (flute, clarinet, etc) play natively in a different key, and he wants the appropriate key to show in the printed score. When he sets the key for a given track, every other track is changed as well, which won't work.
Question 2: When printing the score, is there a way to remove the bass clef? For some instruments (trumpet, for example) there are no notes in the bass clef and it's a waste to print the bass clef at all. He just wants the score to be more compact (and use less paper).
I hope I did his questions justice. :-) Any feedback would be very helpful! Thanks!

So I asked my son if I asked his questions correctly, and I guess I didn't. :-/ So, thanks, anyway, for reading. I'll be posting a different question shortly.
Mods: Please delete if needed. Thanks!
