SCORE: Polyphonic Score Style & Rests

Hello Score Gurus,
This horn part is written within a single MIDI region using a polyphonic score style with four parts (on 4 MIDI channels) to allocate the notes to the proper voice between the two staves.
In this example, only horns 1 and 3 are playing, so rests appear for horns 2 and 4 (and in the worst places -- and that's the problem).
I'm aware of several ways to overcome this problem (one of which is to duplicate the score style, hide rests for 2 and 4, and applying that style only to these measures, then enter user rests to show that 2 and 4 are not to play). Still, I'm wondering if there's some other kinds of tricks or workarounds to hide (or move) these rests so that I don't have to make these kinds of "specialty" score styles for individual measures.

yes there is.
insert a rest into the bar and change its midi
channel to match the non-playing instrument. then you
can drag the rest to where it won't clash with the
notes.
But remember to hold down the Option key while inserting the rest. This makes it a "user" rest.

  • Score Editor:Single-Staff Score Style With Optional Polyphony

    Hi,
I need to do something i read in the manual:
"Sometimes you need to add a second Voice to a staff that usually only requires one Voice, in order to properly notate a short, rhythmically-independent passage...
One solution is to use a Score Style with a “Main Voice” and a “Secondary Voice”..."
O.K how do i create a Score Style with a “Main Voice” and a “Secondary Voice”?

    - open the score style editor
    - duplicate the score style you are using. name it.
    - in the 'new' file menu, select 'insert voice'
    - a new voice will be inserted into the score style.
    - make the necessary adjusments such as hide rests, stems down, or make sure that the midi channel is set in the last box to be 2 or any number different from the your global midi channel.
    - in your score select the stave you want to change (hint: why not cut it into the length you need the second voice to run for?) and choose your new score style.
    - enter the notes you want to enter to be on the second voice.
    - select them and change their midi channels to the number you assigned for them in your score style editor. so in this case; 2.

  • Score styles: spontaneously self-replicating

I duplicated the bass score style and edited it to accomodate independent MIDI voices. Now, every so often when I go to apply a style to a give MIDI region, multiple copies of the original "bass" style appear; later even more, and more, and so on. Why oh why? Ideas?

I'm not sure what you mean about a "default" style... AFAIK, there is no such thing in Logic. The closest thing to "default" that I can think of is something that's manipulated by the "style" setting of a instrument (MIDI or Audio). In case you're not familiar with this, do the following:
    1. Go to the Arrange page and click on any instrument track
    2. On the LH part of the screen is a dark gray box containing the name of the instrument. There's a little white triangle pointing to that name. If it's not already pointing downwards, click on the triangle and information about that instrument will appear. At the bottom of the list is a parameter called "style".
If "style" is set to Auto, what Logic does is it analyzes the note range of the region (right after it's recorded). If it determines that the part is mainly in the lower register, it applies a Bass score style to the score display for that part. A flute part, on the other hand, would result in a Logic applying a Treble score style. You get the idea...
You can override this and set up a "default" score style (of your choosing) for any particular instrument in your Environment.
Other than that, I don't know of any other Logic defaults for score styles.
Have you tried starting a new song (based on your Autoload), playing in a part or two, and seeing how that new song's score display reacts? Might be worth a shot to try to get to the bottom of this very strange problem.

  • Bad Score Style Deleted... error message?

I can't recall having this ever happen before...
I'm trying to open a song I was working on yesterday, but the latest version, as well as all back-ups, give me the message "Bad Score Style Deleted" when I try an open it, and even though there is an "OK" button to click, all that happens is I click the "OK" button repeatedly, and the error message remains, never goes away, and the song never opens.
This particular song was started from a SMF that the drummer had sent me along with his audio tracks, but I've done that many times before, without any problems.
Any ideas what this means, and how to get past it, before I start all over...
    Thanks...

  • Score editor: mapped score style

    Hi,
I' m trying to write normal head notes in a mapped score style.
But i can only get an "X" instead of the normal head note.
I have: opened an environment window> double clicked on the icon> in Head i' ve change the "X", but it didn' t work.
    Thanks.

it will provided you have chosen the correct instrumnet mapping and score style.

  • Staff Styles or Score styles?

I apologise for having to post this but the manual hasn't gotten me where I need to go yet. If I create a new project with 7 staves and the delete 4 of them I am left with 3 staves. They are coupled together so clicking on one selects all 3. I have tried create Duplicate but the coupling remains in place. Any ideas on this? I will of course RTFM again but it is not Logics' easiest editor.

Make you are clear on the difference between Score Sets (Instrument related) and Staff Styles (Region related). And yes the Logic Manual is not really helpful to point that, rather confusing.

  • Score Editor: Hide/Show Rests

I thought that in Score Styles you could Hide/Show rests for different midi regions, so I am perplexed by the following problem: I have a piano part in Arrange which I have cut up into separate regions so that some will display rests and others will display a blank score. The problem is that the Score Style seems to affect all the regions on the same piano part: rests are either shown or hidden for all the regions. ( I want the regions with written notes to display rests and the other regions to remain blank).
(Incidentally the bass clef of the piano part is set to show slashes - it is in the treble clef that I need to have this variety of hide/show rests).
    All help appreciated...

grateful thanks gentlemen.. just to add that this took me absolutely ages to do and I suspect that the name one chooses for a new score style might have something to do with "confusing" the Score Style editor underl >Layout

  • Score editor: beamed grace notes

    Hi,
I usually do this in order to create beamed grace notes:
"If you want to create beamed grace notes, try using a polyphonic staff style (see
“Adding Staffs to a Staff Style” on page 747) with no rests displayed for the second
voice. Assign the desired grace notes to the second voice, and resize them with the
    Resize tool."
Till now it has worked, (I've tried with two or three beamed grace notes). But in the score that I'm working right now I need to have four beamed grace notes, and I couldn't do it. The fourth beamed grace note stays after the "real" note and I could not move it whit the layout tool.
I can send you a picture of the problem if I'm not being clear.
    Thanks.

apparantly now, you can actually beam grace notes as independent grace notes. i don't know for sure, but there maybe a problem with it. i haven't tried it (not in studio).
but for your problem, i would use the technique of assigning the notes you want to be 'grace' to a different midi channel and turning off the rests for that midi channel. you will need to duplicate your score style. this is quite easy to do but really, we ought to have a more elegant method of entering grace notes than we do presently.

  • Score staff problems with keyboard input

Hi. I am trying to input midi keyboard notes, in real time, into Logic Pro. This works fine. However, I'd also like to create a reasonable, normal score from those notes. The problem is that the notes are divided between the bass and treble clefs. This isn't at all readable when, for example, a chord played with the right hand is say, an A minor chord with the C note being middle C. The 3 notes should all appear in the treble clef.
When I try to move the note from the bass clef to the treble clef, I get messages that I need poly voicing and when I follow the help files to add another voice, I get a new clef. The only way I've been able to figure out how to do this is to record the left hand and right hand parts in different tracks, separately, which is quite cumbersome.
This ought to be easy! What am I missing?

i have to say i have created extremely complex and sophisticated concert music scores using logic. it can be done despite a myriad of problems and bugs. it's great advantage is flexibility and speed, there is nothing wrong with what it should be able to do, it just trips you up at the very last hurdle - hugely frustrating because it gets you there well ahead of the game.
i can tell you through the grapevine that improvements and upgrading are on the way for the score editor. it is very useful to have the likes of all the people on this thread posting because score users are under represented on the forum. logic developers don't realize how many of its users depend on its score features, because most of us don't post.
    now some important tips:
    - you can set a default score style in the arrange window in the paramters box when you click on a midi instrument track. that means whenever you create a midi region it will be in that score style.
    - being able to select score styles for different regions is a good thing!!!! this way you can speed up your work flow incredibly - way way faster than sibelius or finale.
Rests have to be written instead of automatically appearing.
rubbish! you can set the rests to appear automatically. use differing score styles.
I wanted to say that I am hugely disappointed with apple's neglect of the score windo
now there i am with you brother.
if you want to see what can be achieved using score in logic, even in the state it's in you can have a look at a sample of my violin concerto i have at my website:

  • Score Question

How do I select Polyphonic Score Styles? Logic pro needs this selected before I can use the separation tool in a piano part.

Click and hold your current score style, choose a piano score style with multiple midi channels. Change midi channels on notes as needed. In manual.

  • Score: Two voices on same staff?

I've been able to put two voices on the same staff. The problem I am having is that the top voice needs to show the stems up and the bottom voice needs to show the stems down.
How would I go about doing that?
At the moment the stems of both voices either point up or down, depending on what I set in the staff styles.
If I create a polyphonic staff style, I actually end up getting two staffs on the page. Not what I need. Any way to create a polyphonic staff with a single staff?
    Thanks,
    JB

To make the stems go in different directions, you need to edit the Staff Style. To edit the Staff Style, select the staff in the score editor, then select Staff Style in the Layout menu. For the top voice, change the stems from Auto to Up and for the bottom voice, set the stems from Auto to Down.
Page 755 in the Logic Pro User Manual PDF might have some information to help out as well. Also, check out the section on Staff Styles which starts on p.741. It is pretty detailed and helpful.
    Hope this is helpful,
    Mitch

  • Score editor: Two staves instruments, etc.

    Hi,
I' m having several problems when i write for instruments that have two staves (piano, harp, etc.)
    I' ll try to explain:
    A) When i write a chord, for example and the notes have the same length, i have no problem but when i have a chord and i try to add on top of it notes with different values, they don' t appear. Sometimes i manage to do what i want, but i have to add independent notes (which i cannot beam)
    B) I have the division at C3, most of the time, this is convenient but when it is not, the staff above voice assignment doesn' t work.
    C) I can't find the arpeggio sign WITHOUT an arrow in the end.
    Thanks.
    K.

    A) turn off no overlap.
    B) voice assignment only works in polyphonic styles. a split at c3 means that all your notes are of the same voice - they ahve just been split across 2 staves. use a polyphonic score style and you will achieve what you want.
    C) its there right next to the arrowed ones.
    D) read the manual. better still, keep it in the loo for reading material. refering to it as you work will generally solve these problems.

  • Score, Line Breaks, Preparing Parts (oh... Rohan?!?)

Couple of questions about preparing my parts from the score for a small string ensemble...
Got my conductor's score looking all spiffy. Now I need to extract my individual parts. I've done this a million times in the past and I always run into the same problems, so I thought it time to get some sagely advice.
    1. Is there any way to "lock" line breaks so that when I create individual parts from my score that the line breaks I created for the conductor's score remain intact in my parts?
Seems that when I double-click on a particular part's staff to see just that part, my line breaks have been disregarded completely.
    2. On a related note, taking Rohan's advice from another thread, I created a duplicate score style for each part that I was going to extract (never done that before). But when I selected the first duplicate score style (for preparing my violin 1 part), the score layout changed. I'm stumped...
This pic shows the first page of the conductor's score using my original Instrument Set:
The second pic shows what happened when I selected my duplicate Instrument Set. You can see how messed up it got...

    iS,
i didn't mean make a duplicate of the full score , i meant make an instrument set of the individual instrument. that means there is only the one instrument in the entire set. you can then format it exactly as you need it to look and print pdf. how line breaks correspond to others is a bit of a mystery, but in general it looks right when i go into each part/instrument set even though i have no faith that it will. but at least each part will have its own individual size and appears to retain its line breaks.
the workflow i have found really reliable is:
    - create the instrument sets for your parts and insert any extra markings working your way through the score and pdf-ing as you go.
    - you may discover errors or omissions or something that you need to return to a previous part to correct, so you can then re-pdf.
    - only once you have all the parts pdf-ed, pdf the score having first deleted all multi bar rests by selecting one in an event editor and then hitting 'select similar'. this is neceassry as multi-bar rests cause display problems. hopefully with LP8 we won't have to do that.
you DON'T save that version. you revert to save after pdf-ing the conductors score. i know it's silly, but the work around at the end only takes a moment. but going about it this way will virtually guarantee everything will turn out as it should.

  • Score editor inserting notes.

    Hi Everyone
Hope you're all keeping well. Please can some one help to explain how to insert a quaver note on a staff at the beginning of a bar or on the first beat of the bar with a minim on the same beat beneath it, I do know how to use the separation tool but I am having difficulty writing a quaver on the first beat instead I keep getting a crotchet. If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it take care.
    Tumahawk.

There are two questions here: i) regarding the size of the note, quaver/crotchet etc ... depends on how the Score settings are displayed. Best thing is to read the manual if you want to do this in the Score Editor there are so many ways to do it and you need to get familiar with a couple of regular operations.
    i) ie the Song Position Line.. get used to placing this exactly in the bar where you want to insert a note.
ii) Also the Event Editor: if you drag a note from the side of the score editor you need to look at the Event Editor to see exactly where you are placing it.
iii) If you are using a midi keyboard to input the notes, then you need to set up key commands that would make the SPL move by the right increments, ie shift SPL a quaver, a crotchet etc.. and become familiar with the Key Command that shifts the SPL etc
However if you just want to insert a note and drag it to the right size then the best place is the Matrix editor where you can see exactly how long the note length is... though the display of the note also depends on what your score settings are, so you may put in a quaver and if the Score Style show only crotchets, it will display a quaver as a crotchet.
Regarding your second question about putting a minim on the same beat of the bar below a quaver.. you will need to explore the concept of Polyphonic voices and assign the line with the minim to a different midi channel
This may all sound a bit complicated but the more familiar you get with the basics of the Score Editor the easier it will get

  • Score Editor: Reduce size of individual chord symbols?

The Logic chord fonts - bless them - have always produced very unwieldy symbols when you add a bass note, as in the examples below. I am always aching to reduce the size of the invidual chord symbols ( Eb over G ... Eb over Bb) because they clutter up the score, while keeping the other chords the same size.
Is there any way whatsover to do this? The Resize Tool does not seem to work on them. Nor are Chord Symbols convertible to plain text objects - either severally or individually ( as the Song Title is).
    All suggestions welcomed

if i understand you correctly, you would be advised to use a different score style to hide the rests, and the format tool to drag bars into different positions.
you might consider also using the global format constant spacing, or limiting the number of bars displayed on a line.
there are lots of ways round this - you also can insert a user barline that will hide it on print out. one thing you can't do is drag a barline. perhaps more detail about what you are trying to achieve might help if this hasn't answered it for you.
