Score writing capability of Logic & general quality/reliability

I am looking at getting new Mac, new Logic, all spanking up to date.
Could someone answer these questions:
Is Logic as good as Cubase re recording sound/quality? (I have been used to Cubase but Apple shop trying to persuade me to use Logic - I create CDs for schools, professional use.)
Also, is Logic as good as Cubase for score writing. I self-publish music books, semi-professional.

Logic is a very good tool, it's sound quality is excellent. (you will want to get a decent interface box) The fact that Apple owns it, is a big plus. They will be more likely to keep it up to date with hardware changes.. I have heard complaints from several Cubase users who switched over..
It's scoring capability is OK. For general use it should suffice. Serious score writers (and music publishers) will prefer Finale or Sibelius. You'll have to decided that for yourself. Learning Logic's scoring is a bit 'obtuse' (not as clearly explained as other sections of the program)

I want to write 2 Queries.
a. input is OrderId, Need to find out how many order's present with status = 'N' after that orderid provided.
b. input is OrderId, Need to find out what is the previous order with status = 'Y'
Note: There can be 100's of orders and Status would be Y on first come first serve basis... if one does not have status = 'Y' ie it is 'N' the following order's will never turn to final status = 'Y'.
There are millions of records in the table.
Your help for writing this query / logic would be highly appreciated. Am intending to do thru single query.

IChat uses better Video Compression than Skype does.
On a top flight Mac you can send a 640 X 480 pixel frame up to 30 frames a sec.
Skype can't match this.
iChat in Video is Peer to Peer. (you can actually Log out of the Buddy list)
Skype seems to borrow something from everyone's bandwidth to make connections.
What do you mean by Business account Tracking ?
iChat Adds (or can add) the First Name, Last Name of your Buddies and create an Address Book Entry
Whether you mark those cards connected with a company is up to you.
(I have heard of issues with earlier version of iChat and the Address Book that "saw" the Company Name as the part of the Name and linking several Screen Names to the one name
Audio on a Mac using Skype tend to be the same as the streaming needs are less.
However you have to rely on any PCs audio abilities from PCs which may not be to the same standard.
Mac to PCs in iChat and AIM can be difficult though. (It should work but it rarely as simple as Plug and go)
Skype may suit your needs better on ocassions.

TI4400/4600 TV-in/capture specs & general quality?

Can someone PLEASE tell me what the specs for the video capture (TV/Video IN) capabilities of these cards are??!
I've read countless tests and reviews, and NONE of them (MSI specs included) mention A SINGLE WORD about technical specs for the capture abilities.
IE:
- what FRAMERATES does it support? (25/29.997/?)
- what RESOLUTIONS ..? (352x288 ? 704x576 ?)
- what output formats? (ie are you forced to use some weirdo MPEG2 format they've decided is nice for you, or can you actually use 3rd party applications to save .avi's
of your own preferred settings .. ie VirtualDUB, Premiere, ..)
Also, I'm a bit curious about the general quality of the captures done by these cards.. Are they any good? Or are they moderate, since the main features seem to be 3D/games galore..?
Ie, if it supports full-size captures (704x576), are you haunted by interlacing (every 2nd line is updated every 2nd frame), or does it actually produce a full-size clear picture?
I'm considering getting a TI4400, partially because it has video/tv-in, but since there's no specs available or the reviews just drown in 3D benchmarks it leaves me with a cry for help :o

I can only give you info from a GF3 POV, but there shouldn't be much difference between them (gf4) as they both use the Phillips chip to get the Video in.
All framerates are supported
All resolutions are supported though recommended not in the higher brackets. Tweaking can yeld good results in higher resolutions, but I never go above 640X480 with high audio.
The card comes with a program called wincoder for the capture, and this outputs in mpeg2. But I have no problems using VirtualVCR or VirtualDub for capture and editing, and you can capture using any codec you can try. You will find with most middle of the range capture cards that the programs supplied are OK, but you get better results from thirdparty programs.
Wincoder has sinc issues with high resolution.
I use HUFFYUV codec for capture, then output into Divx4.
The quality is good. For a chip that is middle of the range(next step up being dedicated firewire cards) it has no trouble for everyday use.
Interlace is only there if the medium you use is interlace. ie TV, Video etc. The only thing I can test this with though is cable TV(fine) and DVD with PS2(fine)
VirtualDub can remove interlace from TV dubs.
For a 3dcard that does Video in, is a good thing. Best of both worlds. Just make sure if you do buy the card, that the rest of the computer is upto scratch, ready for a Gf4.

Which Logic version is reliable

Hi all, I am using Logic 8 at the moment with not the newest Power Mac G4 computer and I get the "system overloaded" message. I thought it might be the old computer and was thinking to buy a new one. I went to Apple store today to test the best Mac Book Pro with highest memory, processor etc. And when I played the Demo songs, this message appeared again. Of course I can't afford just buying something which might wouldn't work, but have no experience in Logic and have a few deadlines with projects. Can anyone suggest whether is there are any older Logic version which would be reliable? Like Logic 7... Is it working smoothly? Does it have also as many loops, sounds inbuilt so that I could use it for film music? I must find a way to make it work soon but don't dare to commit myself financially of paying the instalments for 3 years... So please post those who have no 'overloaded' problem at all of what settings, what computer and Logic you have...

Hello. I use LP7. I purposely will not update to LP8. I have researched LP8 is great depth and have concluded that only has Apple not provided much needed updates for this version, but it's current feature set is not substantial enough to warrant me to upgrade. Yes, LP7 has its own idiosyncrasies but it is pretty much solid. Yes, it's not as "streamlined" as LP8, but I don't prefer my interface looking like iTunes. I don't mind creating objects in the environment and dragging them into the arrange window. I feel this just forces users to deal with the environment who otherwise are reluctant to do so. LP7 has rarely given me the overload message. But it is usually a result of my Mac waking up from sleep or something random and temporary; definitely not something that interferes with production. As far as using it for film and tv, it is very much capable. I work in audio post and use it for that and much more. I generally stay away from generic loops but I know many use them, so to each their own. LP9's release was a complete disappointment on many levels; too big a subject to discuss on this thread.

Problem exporting notation from score to PDF in Logic 8. Top line of staff displaced a 1/6th note when exported.

When I export drum notation from the score to pdf, it shifts the top line of the staff over by a 16th note. It looks the way I want in the program, but only does this when exported. I'm using Logic 8. Anyone know how to fix this? See the pictures attached below...

I've tried both ways and had the same results. I discovered today though that if I zoom in all the way in the score the notation actually shifts over in Logic. I'm not sure why it does that, but now I know that it has nothing to do with exporting or how I export it. The notes should line up for this particular groove and I've tried with other beats and had the same results. Not sure if there's a setting somewhere that displaces certain lines of the staff or something of that nature. I can drag the notes over with the layout tool, but it'd be nice to have a preset to have it go where I want it and save myself time. Thanks for responding and if you have any other ideas let me know.

Strange viewing behaviour on score page view on Logic 7.2.0 on MacBookPro

I recorded some sequences in Logic 7.2.0 on my MacBookPro and, seeing them in page view mode, I get a strange viewing behaviour: the staffs continue going straight on overshooting the "white delimited page zone". If I try to zoom out I can't obtain the "more pages view" option normally obtained.
If I reopen this song on the logic 7.2.0 situated in my G5 all is fine. Why?

Guys, I think this problem has to do with the scale parameter of the instrument set being translated incorrectly on Intel/MPB (quite possibly affecting even the "ALL" instrument set, which has no adjustable parameters). Now, I don't have an Intel Mac or MBP, but based on my recent experiences in PPC and similar problems, plus what I've read here, I think I might be on to something...
I'm going to suggest that you guys who are having problems with staves going off the page to do the following test:
1) Open one of your problematic songs and view the score editor where the off-the-page staves are displayed
2) If you're using the "ALL" instrument set, read on. If not, go to #3 below.
ALL Instrument Set: if you're using this just to see a preliminary version of your score, close the score window, select ALL, and open the score editor. This forces the creation of a new instrument set. Do these staves go off the page? If not, you're good to go. But if they do go off the page...
a) go to your printer settings and make sure that you have valid settings there. This includes the printer type, page size, and scaling. If they're set to default values (like "most recent printer"), be sure to select an actual printer on your system.
b) open the Instrument Set parameters for the set that was created just before. Set the scale parameter to 200%, then make it 50%, then make it 100%. If my theory is correct, your music should now stay on the page.
3) If you're using a custom instrument set repeat steps a) and b) above. See if that clears up the problem.
I'd be curious to know if any of the above fixes the problem for you. Again, it's just a theory, but maybe it has legs...

IChat - General quality

Hi,
I have been using iChat and Skype for the last 2 years. My Girlfriend lives in the states and we both have macs so life has been made much, much easier.
To be honest, I have tended to favour Skype much more than iChat fo rthe simple reason that the sound quality has so so much better. iChat was ...ok. But Skype made you feel like you were in the same room. I assume that it is the same for everyone and not just us, so why has mac not been able (or willing) to have something of the same quality?
Towards the end of last year we both aquired iSights. We couldn't always get them to work on Skype so we started using them with ichat with the audio muted and talking via skype.
Both of us travel a lot due to work so a lot of the time we are in hotels and I know the internet connection can be a bit crappy, but even at home I have to say that I have always been a little bit dissapointed at the iChat video quality, but only because when I first saw it advertised the picture/video looked amazing. And I have never seen it come close. On the up side, I certainly am not complaing. Both services have kept us in touch like we never could have 5 years ago. And for free, too!
On the subject of Skype, the quality over the 2 years I have been using it has deteriorated to an almost un-usable standard. The amount of users has more than doubled in that time and I also read that ISP's are now managing the flow of peer to peer users, slowing it down when they want to.
Unfortunately I am not that knowledgable about these kind of things and so really don't know how it all works.
Am I wrong to wish that apple could make a better way to comunicate?

I'd already read some of the posts you guys have commented on this matter and I took the advice of setting streaming speeds and bandwidths. But it didn't have any effect.
I apologise for keep mentioning (skype), but when it was good it certainly was good. Audio wise at least. I'm still curious as to why Mac haven't had anything that good yet. If however iChat and Skype are two completely different things then you'll have to excuse me for my ignorance.

General Quality Issues...........

Hello to 1&All Mac Fans
Just wanna share my experience.....I converted to the Mac 2yrs ago & everything was wonderful; everything was a synch as compared to Windows....but the good times ended when I experienced a "Kernel Panic" that resulted in the logic board being fried. It was definitely not due to any of my doing. Was told that it's just not viable to have it repaired. It's just been 2 short yrs, i was very diligent in updating & keeping the system in top form, had very little data.....I'm just very disappointed as I've always been told that Apple is really airtight in the quality dept. Its definitely not playing out this way. The other problem that i've encountered is the keypad that "pops out", where the keys don't sit properly & doesn't register when you type.....Just very basic quality issues!
If Apple wants to continue pricing its computers as premium products that's synonymous with quality & durability, you've got to do something....I bought the PowerBk because i wanted something that's real quality.....

It isn't clear from your post whether you imagine that you're talking to Apple by posting here, but the fact is, you aren't. You're just talking to other Mac users like yourself, because that's what these forums are for. I'm sorry you haven't had a good experience with your Powerbook, but any computer can fail. Macs do it less often than others, but they do it occasionally. I don't know why anyone would have told you "it's just not viable to have it repaired" — that's nonsense. It would be expensive to replace the logic board, but Apple does have a Flat Rate Repair program, which fixes anything and everything on a qualifying Powerbook for $350 or less — the exact price scale and criteria for qualification are unpublished. If your PB is two years old and in mint condition externally, it may be a good candidate. Make an Apple Store Genius Bar appointment, and if the Genius doesn't offer the FRR program, ask about it. CanNOT install Tiger on New Quad. What version of Logic is most reliable??

I've read all the posts to death, and fully intended to install Tiger onto my new Quad, but that is not an option. so... It came with Leopard 10.5.1. I need to know what exact configuration with the most stability I should go with. i.e. -- do i stay at 10.5.1 or go to 10.5.2 --- i have every upgrade of Logic since 6.0, so do I go with 7.2.3, or Logic 8.??, or something else.
I am interested in what is the 'lesser evil' of a combination here and trying to stay off as much issues as some of you more unfortunate souls.
and lastly, in this equation what other update should i definitely do, or avoid like the plague...i.e. pro kit, pro apps, security update blah, blah, blah...I do video editing as well, so i wonder if my Final Cut Studio 2 will even come in to play in the equation.
I am really sorry for all who have been screwed over by all these completely evil 'bugs' and such. i really welcome any of your input if it means it can lessen the blow on my own studio.

i have come to believe that you have been completely misguided. there is absolutely no way my new Quad or Macbkpro will run tiger 10.4.11...no way!!!
i took both an internal, and an external drive to my old Tiger running G5. Did fresh installs of tiger on both. then did combo upgrades up to 10.4.4 ( cause it would not do any higher and do the intel version from the G5 ). I brought the drives back to my new Laptop and Quad. updated the software on them up to 10.4.11 intel combo. stuck one drive into the quad, and left one for an external scenerio. I have booted, rebooted, target disc mode, chose boot drive mode, prayed, cried, switched start up drive... even switched the roles and tried to do it with the MacBkPro, also. what i get, from either one, every single time, is the following....
the great black curtain of death saying to do a hard reboot, and code at the top saying stuff like
"panic(cpu 0 caller 0x003abd33) : Unable to find driver for this platform: "ACPI" . "
then some stuff about... debugger called...<panic>...backtrace, format - frame : return address (4 potential args on stack)....jibberish code junk.... then Kernal Version: Darwin kernal version 8.11.1...
so, please, be my kind Italian friend and tell me, are you SUUURE this is possible??? if you know a special secret to accomplishing this, you can reach me through my site. ( i don't want to do or say anything on the forums that would be wrong or against the rules... really...i respect them...I also respect my tons of paying clients that are ready to find other places to give my business...)
and lastly, if indeed I am "stuck" with Leopard on my Quad, in regards to Logic, what combination do I go with in juggling 10.5.1 vs. 10.5.2, vs. Logic 7.2.3 vs. Logic 8.?, then what other random stuff should I do or avoid, i.e. ProApps updates, Pro-kit, certain security updates, etc...

Writing Custom Tax Logic

I wrote some custom tax logic (using .cs include file linked from verify.aspx) and I can calculate the new tax but how to I set the shopping cart tax to my new value so it shows on the screen (and into the database)? I have looked at the nptax class and nporderexpensetax class help files but I am not sure how exactly which command to use? Thanks,

Actually it's very dependant on the situation.
Example 1: Not creating a BP for B2C accounts created in B1
Customer A places an order and wants it shipped to Nebraska
Customer A creates an account in Web tools
The Item is warehoused in Alabama, so anyone shipping to Alabama has to pay Alabama sales tax
The tax is not applied to Customer A's order in Web tools
The tax is also not applied to Customer A's order in B1
Example 2: Not creating a BP for B2C accounts created in B1
Shopper places an order and wants it shipped to Alabama
Shopper creates an account in Web tools
The Item is warehoused in Alabama, so anyone shipping to Alabama has to pay Alabama sales tax
Shopper pays tax in Wt
The merchant adds Alabama to list of shipping addresses in B1 on the "B2C Website" BP and tax assigned to the address, during implementation
Tax is applied in B1 with the same amount charged in Wt

So Wt is doing things correctly, and within B1 the adjustment needs to be made.
This is a limitation of the solution that has a simple workaround(manually add correct tax), and it is a best practice to monitor all orders coming from the web for fraud detection, errors made by shopper, etc anyways.

Voiceover in new iMovie lacks major low frequency and general quality?

Anyone else observing that voiceover in the new iMovie on Mavericks sounds remarkably different?
Me: recording voiceover with the built-in mic on an early 2013 macbook pro - compared audio with previous old iMovie/mountain lion, quite a large difference. Audio previously sounded admirably rich and decent for a built in mic, but now sounds faint, tinny, missing serous low end. I've messed with the new equalizer features for voiceover - the 'Bass boost' setting certainly helped, but it overcompensates and sounds muddy in comparison to how the previous audio was.
Haven't tried using the mic in other applications to see whether the problem is local to iMovie - curious if anyone else has noticed this?
On the plus, the new interface suits me much better, and for some reason rendering movies seems to be taking about 5 minutes compared to previously 5 hours? Ok I'll take that.

I have the same problem. Just tried using iMovie 13 for the first time (have been using FCE). My microphone is a Blue Yeti, which gives superb results in FCE.
Does anybody know what's going on?

Logic for quality clearence to warehousing cycle time report

I am developing a report on it,i know that Movement Type 101 and Y11(Transfer with in plant) is used for it. I want to know which tables or tcodes to be used for it for making the flow of the report (i dont want to use MSEG and MKPF tables).

MB1A,MB1B are the T codes where u can do these Transactions.
MBLNR is the Docuemnt number field which .So use this field and click on WHERE USED LIST IN SE11 T code u will get other alternate tables.
If u dont use MSEG I can understande but i think there is no issues in using MKPF

Logic scores and Quark compatability?

Hi. I use Logic to mainly produce audio and up till now, I have always used Sibelius to produces the scores that my co-writer then imports to Quark, for publication. However can anyone advise whether the score production facility of Logic Pro is a) up to the quality of Sibelius and b) can scores be easily imported into Quark? I would ideally to be using one program ie Logic for both audio and score production. Thanks, Mark.

you 'can' create pretty professional scores in logic and it is possible to create EPS and PDF documents that you can view and manipulate in quark. logics score facility is very old and in desperate need of updating. we have had it on good authority that there will be some kind updating of logics score feature in the next big update whenever that will be.
i myself have produced plenty of concert music scores with logic and there are plenty of caveats and problems. in many areas logic is much faster to work with, and in others it is slower. on balance it is probably a bit faster, but the bits that slow you up are annoying.

which shows that you can produce a pretty smart looking full score. that said, sibelius being a dedicated notating program will be a touch better. its just that for ease of editing and composition and fantastic sounding mock-ups you can't beat logic. in fact, the mock up for 'devil' which you can hear on my concert music page, was produced directly from the score i printed. i worked out a way to make what was seen on screen sound exactly as it should - aprt from a few cheats.
