SCORM Tracking

Hi All
I'm new to the Forum and relatively new to Captivate 4.
My question is this, how do I send a 'Pass mark" to the LMS without using Quiz Questions.
E.g. Once a learner has completed a software simulation Captivate alerts the LMS that the learner has passed / completed the training.
I have published the simulation a SCORM 1.2 package and have tried various 'Report Status" configurations but alas the LMS does not appear to receive any data.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Kind regards
Chris

Hi again
Hmmm, it would seem the playing field has suddenly transmogrofied from the original question!
You did ask how things might work without resorting to quiz questions, no?
As I intimated in my first reply, Buttons and Click Boxes may have scoring enabled. So... you could concoct an assessment that has no quiz questions at all. Only Click Boxes and Buttons and maybe even Text Entry Boxes. All of these may be scored. You could then design it so things have to be dealt with in a specific manner in order to pass. Only by following the path you designate as being correct would they pass.
Unfortunately, this falls into the class of the ever present situation. How to truly test to see if someone really knows something. And I'm not sure any test created to date is totally able to do that. After all, a person may be able to spout all the right answers and still be basically clueless about how to make something actually work in the real world. I compare it to using a table saw or a compound miter saw. Sure, one can make perfect cuts. You might test for that. But are they also able to create a beautiful and well crafted cabinet just because they can make perfect cuts?
Maybe, maybe not.
Cheers... Rick

  • AS3 SCORM problem

    Hi there,
    Hope someone can assist!
I am publishing my Captivate 4 project with AS3 settings, as I have created a few animations in AS 3 that are inserted. Now I am publishing it and putting it on our scorm compliant LMS, it is not communicating with the LMS.
I have also published a file in AS2, which worked just fine in communicating with the LMS. Just took a course with one slide published it with AS2, then tried the same content exactly same settings only selecting AS3 and it didn't work.
One of the differences is that with AS3 settings it also wants to open a new empty window, which it doesn't do with the AS2 setting.
I have done some checking with the firebug in Firefox and it looks like it loads just fine, but when it starts playing it misses the communication with the LMS.
I was wondering if there are any solutions out there...
    Thanks a lot!
    Annemarie

No such thing as a stupid question....
Yes I did check those settings... and that seems to be causing the problem.
I just took an empty, new presentation (just for the process of elimination, no other values/factors involved) set the captivate settings to AS2 published tried it on the LMS, worked fine.
Then same empty slide, set the captivate settings to AS3, all other settings remained exactly the same, tried it on the LMS, it plays fine, but there is no communication to the LMS.
It loads all the swf files correctly, then with AS2 published file, it starts the "soaplms.php?op=initialize" and you can see in firebug (net) that the "scorm_support.swf?invokemethod etc" communicates with the LMS every few seconds, so it is reporting my progress and all that I do in the course.
With the AS3 settings, it never does the "soaplms.php?op=initialize", and actually at that moment it should display this message, it opens a new emtpy window. The course continues to play and all the buttons work, but it doesn't communicate to the LMS what my progress is or what I have done in the course.
There is a document that talks about the scorm compliance of Captivate and it mentioned that you might need to check that the API can be found, so I did that edited the html file, added the alert,  and the API can be found when launching the AS3 published file.
I have also tried it on the scorm tracker site from rustici, which is a great resource by the way: http://www.scorm.com/scorm-solved/testtrack/
You can upload your zip files and see the debug reports so you know exactly what happens in terms of communication to the LMS.
    ActusxReus wrote:
stupid question, but did you double check that you selected Actionscript 3 in your Captivate preferences?
ActusXreus, have you succesfully used AS3 settings in a course and published it and used it on an LMS where it did track the results? Or if there is anyone else out there that did use these settings successfully, I would really like to know and maybe see what type of settings you have used in the other areas...
    Thank you so much!

  • FLASH DATA in SCORM

    Hi,
I have a problem to capture a value from flash. I am using
scorm tracking 1.2 and i publish the flash with scorm tracking 1.2
    into HTML.
The problem is, how does the scorm read the value from my
flash? I find no associated value between the flash and the scorm
script. I know I can use a flash quiz template to do this. but i
would like to customize my quiz hence i created it myself.
this is part of the scorm script that i obtain from
publishing it. Can anyone tell me which variable to change in order
to match with the variable that stores the value in my flash? Or is
    there any other ways?

  • SCORM content on Oracle Learning Management

    Hi,
Currently we are trying to setup a basic SCORM tracked course on Oracle Learning Management. We are using the example single course from
    http://www.adlnet.gov/Technologies/scorm/SCORMSDocuments/Forms/AllItems.aspx?RootFolder=%2fTechnologies%2fscorm%2fSCORMSDocuments%2fPrevious%20Versions%2fSCORM%201.2&FolderCTID=0x0120007F801FCD5325044C89D91240519482D7&View={4D6DFFDE-3CFC-4DD9-A21A-4B687728824A}
The course has imported correctly into the LMS but we are having trouble with the course actually working.
If the SCORM adapter in the LMS is not set, then the course will run but with javascript alert messages "Unable to find API adapter".
If the SCORM adapter is set, then the course will not load but will come up with a 400 Bad Request error.
So I think the content is essentially fine because the course will load, but why would setting the SCORM Adapter return a 400 Bad Request error?
Accessing the SCORM Adapter directly returns the appropriate "No content to display" message so that is fine.
    Any hints or ideas?

I have continued testing, and have found that the following is being passed
    http://company.com.au:9999/content/scorm_adapter_files/oracle_scorm_adapter.html

Note that the : in the starting url has been changed to a %u003a instead of %3A. This is obvioulsy a encoding error. Why would this happen and could this be causing the bad request error?

  • SCORM compliant Flash quizzes

    Hi all
Here's another SCORM question that probably won't get
    answered, but it goes.
Looking through Flash Help section, there's a section called
"Creating E-Learning Content". Within that, it goes into detail
about creating quizzes from templates and such.
Now I was looking through this section, because it has some
info about SCORM compliant Flash, and it says:
"To initialize SCORM tracking, you must use a quiz template."
Is this true? I have to use one of Flash's ugly templates?
I've also seen SCORM compliant Flash examples that don't use
    templates or components at all.
Does anyone have any insight on any of this? Because
everywhere I've looked so far has just gotten me more confused and
aggravated. There's not a lot of detail out there, and anything
that is out there seems to be either outdated, or contradicted by
    something else I found.
Your help is appreciated as always.
    Thanks again
    Chris

I hadn't heard of SCORM before but it seems to be about e-learning stuff and therefore likely related similar to Captivate content.
This is unlikely to work currently since it probably depends upon audio and/or video support which Wallaby currently lacks.

  • Progress Tracking System

Hi, I built an elearning / product training module for a client in Flash (AS3, FP 10).
The client in the past had used software called "Knowledge Presenter" do deliver the modules via web and track whether someone had opened each swf in the project, and how long they stayed in it. They also had a quiz component, which I've rebuilt in as3, I'd like to record the results of the quiz, by passing a variable to the system and attach it somehow to that users account.
So basically I need: to be able to create users, track users progress which basically means telling if they loaded a section of the flash and how long they had it open for, store a score for each user.
Is there an Adobe solution that does this?

You are describing what a Learning Management System does.
Adobe has a pseudo-LMS called Connect which may do what you need.
Knowledge Presenter, which I think is Articulate's product, is very similar to Adobe Presenter, which is somewhat a companion lesson-development tool for Connect.
So you may be close to what you need...
If not, you should look at using the SCORM-tracking features of Knowledge Presenter and look for a SCORM-compliant LMS to house and track these lessons, as that's likely a more efficient approach then trying to redo all that by hand.
If you'd rather go custom, then I suppose you could create a tracking system using Adobe ColdFusion, or another web-development tool, and customize your lessons to send the needed data to that webservice...

  • Problem of Creating SCORM 1.2 from Flash

    Dear All,
When I created e-Learning content through the flash and
published it from SCORM 1.2 standard to upload in new IBM LMS 1.04
version, it is not working properly.
How to generate the XML files needed for communicating with
LMS. If any option in flash to generate such kind of XML or should
I use thirdparty software for generating the XML? if someone have
experience in e-Learning content developing kindly help about it.
    Regards
    Aluvan

    You can use the
Reload Editor to create the XML
files for both scorm 1.2 and 2004, but I think it is more likely
that your communication problem is in the javascript wrapper.
Captivate uses the same SCORM setup, so searching for
Captivate SCORM issues may help you find the particular one that is
    causing problems with your LMS.

  • Help with CreditFlow Solution

"To complete the implementation of this flow, you would add another <assign> activity
to the flow (after the credit rating service has been invoked), which would copy the result
returned from the credit rating service (in your invoke_CRS_process_output_variable
variable) into the creditRating field for the result of your process itself (the
outputVariable variable). We leave this as an exercise for you."
    SO I MAKE THIS:
    1. Drag an <assign> activity from the BPEL Palette into your flow just after the
invocation of the credit rating service
    2. Double click the newly created Assign activity to update its properties.
    3. Select the general tab on the Assign activity and enter assign_SSN into the Name
    field.
    4. Select the Copy Rules tab and click Create.
The XPath wizard opens. This wizard allows you to assign the value of a variable
selected in the From field to the value of a variable selected in the To field.
    5. THIS STEP IS WHAT I DOESNT KNOW WHAT TO ASSIGN, I MAKE THIS:
    Variables > Invoke_CRS_process_OutputVariable > payload > > ns1:rating
    to
    Variables > outputVariable > payload > client:CreditFlowProcessResponse >
    client:CreditRating
But this isn´t correct, can anyone told me the solution?

If you create the full presentation in Premiere, which is
    probably fine,
and would be nice with After Effects...effects, once you have
    that MPEG,
you don't want to drop it into another authoring tool if your
    only
reason for doing that is to output a SWF. There are plenty of
    tools that
    convert video to SWF...
    SUPER is a great one:

thought it is hard to actually find the link to the software
    and avoid

And a websearch will surely reveal many more (mpeg to swf,
    etc). In
fact, isn't there a plugin for Premiere to output to SWF or
    FLV directly?
The only advantage to loading your finished movie into an
    authoring tool
like Captivate is if you need to add some sort of interaction
    and/or
SCORM tracking. Otherwise, you're just adding a lot of
    overheard to the

As mentioned in my other reply, you could likely do what you

  • Strange problems with Zip Files in Captivate/SumTotal

Ok, this is a weird one. If I publish a 1.2 SCORM course and select the zip folder option, our (horrible) SumTotal 7.6 system has no problems uploading the course. If I publish to a folder or to my desktop and place all the files in the folder and zip the file, it doesn't track as SCORM at all.
I get the same results on the ADL Test Scorm tracker. When the zip folder is uploaded, it reads as SCORM compliant. When I publish to an upzipped folder and then zip it, I get a ton of XML file not well formed and other xml errors.
The issue is that I need to make changes to the imsmanifest file to remove the SumTotal Navigation Player and resize the screen properly for the course.
The zip program we are using is "ZipGenius".
1.) Has anyone else run into this issue?
2.) Any ideas on how to fix this so that I can make changes to the imsmanifest file and still upload the course as 1.2 SCORM compliant?
    Thanks,
    Dan

    Kevin,
At first, I would have thought the LMS doesn't necessarily return the appropriate information for Captivate to send a score (there are several basic calls that are supposed to be sent by an LMS in SCORM to facilitate this).  So, I created a custom HTM file for the Captivate 4 template...  But in re-reading the thread - you are using SumTotal and I believe SumTotal does make these calls...
For the purposes of anyone else that is using an LMS and not seeing a score in their LMS (and they are using this custom template) - here is a Captivate 4 template file that forces Captivate to send a score to a SCORM LMS (though not necessarily SCORM-compliant LMS - if these calls are ignored):  http://www.learningconsulting.com/Content/Macromedia/Captivate/SumTotal_Captivate4_SCORM_C ustom.zip
Kevin - I do not necessarily believe this custom template will work for you.  I can send you an entire debug file I've built for helping to track down AICC/SCORM issues - but let's hold off on that, for now.  Can you edit the resulting HTM file of one of your published Captivate file built using the SCORM template I've provided earlier; modify the last line in the method sendTrackingDataToLMS; uncomment out the alert statement (remove the "//").  I'd like to know what is displayed when you close the content window from SumTotal.

    Andrew

  • Yet another question on daisy chaining...

After having thoroughly sifted through prior discussion on the subject, as well as looked at the online tutorial (gooberguides) and other sources, I am compelled to come back and ask this question. This is Captivate 5.
Here is my scenario, and it seems to be quite simple. I have a large project, which I want to break up into smaller ones. This is so that users don't have to sit and wait for it to load from the LMS before they can start. I need to have SCORM reporting, so that users can leave and come back to where they were. I don't think I can resolve this using Multi-SCO Packager, as the resulting package doesn't appear as a single module, but as several modules within a single package. Aggregator wouldn't quite work, since it forces that TOC, which I don't want to have.
One more wrinkle in the whole thing is that I have my own TOC, which is on the first slide of Module no. 2, to which I have a link from most other (subsequent) modules.
I have successfully daisy-chained all of this using the online guide mentioned above. I used 'Open URL or file'. At first, I tried pointing to the SWF file for the next module, but when I deployed the final package, my browser (Firefox) wanted to download the next module, instead of playing it back in the browser window. Pointing to HTML file resolved that. My links back to the Module 2 (TOC) work fine. It took me a while to figure out why none of the linking wouldn't work at first. It only started working when I removed spaces from file names (this I couldn't find anywhere in documentation, and stumbled upon by myself).
My only problem (a deal breaker) is with SCORM tracking. When I publish with reporting turned on, the following happens: first module plays back throughout (all five slides). At the end, it loads the second module. However, when second module starts playing, it either freezes on load, or skips right past first 5 slides and starts playing from slide no. 6. This is telling me that the LMS is treating this as if the user has closed the session after reaching slide 5, then immediately re-opened it, so the LMS is sending him straight to slide 6, except this is now Module 2, and not Module 1. Meanwhile, user has never touched anything and has actually never left the session. Sure enough, if I leave the session at, for example, Module 2, slide 7, when I come back, LMS will be stuck trying to load Module 1, slide 7 (which doesn't exist; my Module 1 has only 5 slides).
So, apparently, simple daisy-chaining doesn't work well with SCORM reporting. Meanwhile, Aggregator (and Multi-SCO Packager) aren't doing it for me, as they force TOC to show individual modules.
Does anyone have any ideas how to work around these obstacles?

  • Protecting a Course

    Hello,
I am examining captivate for using on my e-learning website.
Currently I sell the content in protected PDF and .exe formats.
Now I want to provide online content. However I want to see
    what options I have to:
1- Protect the content from download (professional users look
into html codes and steal the flash files, video and voice etc).
2- To limit access to my customers only (i.e. no access to
non-customers who have received a URL of a content illegally).
For the second item I think about session control (eg. in
PHP), however upon successful login people might find actual URLs
    of flash files etc.
    Regards,
    Mac

Well the first thing to look into is an LMS. You would need
to have access control in order to view your courses and an LMS can
do that for you. As an added bonus you get SCORM tracking if you
    use an LMS.
That would sort out the access control. Sure you can do it
with PHP as well, but an LMS (not open source) is more secure. Some
LMS even offer the possibility to purchase access to courses via
Paypal and then they get a personalized access to that particular
    course.
As for preventing the download of your files (Captivate
swf's, voice and videofiles) that is almost impossible to achieve.
Anyone can download the swf files and decompile them. As for
downloading video and audiofiles that is pretty easy aswell.
Captivate offers some features that you could use to make it
more difficult for the downloaders to use the files. First of all
you could add a password to your course that the user would need to
enter before viewing it. It isn't very userfriendly, but it could
be an option. Secondly you could add an expiration date to your
project. Perhaps you could set your courses to expire at a given
date. It would mean that you would have to upload a new course with
a new expiration date often though.
Are you worried about people steal your course as a whole or
    just the content?
If you are worried about the course as a whole then you could
make some custom flash components to load text, images, videos and
audio into your Captivate project. That way you can have Captivate
export these files as standalone files, which Captivate loads when
needed. This would make it more difficult for anyone to download
your entire project. Furthermore you could encrypt these files with
    SWF Encrypt (
    http://www.amayeta.com).
You could add a Flash Tracker to your course (a flash file
inserted in your project) that reports the location (url) of where
your project is hosted. That way if someone steals your course and
puts it on their own server you would have the url of where it's
hosted and could go after them legally.
The last thing I can think of is to add another custom flash
file on the first page of your captivate project. This file could
pause the project and check if it is hosted on the correct domain.
If that is the case then it would start to play your course. If not
then it could display a custom message and not play the course. I'm
working on developing such a file right now and when it's done I'll
post some information on my website.
Well that's all I could think off. Maybe someone else have
    more things to offer.

  • Telling Captivate which linked file to open first

Hi all, I have created a seven module course, each module is a separate CP file.
I published these files into one PUBLISHED folder, which has ONE file that is set up to track a SCORM quiz.
When I upload these files to the LMS, the LMS is opening the SCORM tracked file first.. it can't seem to see the MENU file.
I have been told that there is not a way to make the Cornerstone lms open a certain file first... IS THERE A WAY that I can tell the SCORM XML... or index.. what file I want it to play first?
A fairly SIMPLE way... I am not a programmer.... and the client does NOT like the way Aggregator looks.
    Thank you! Quiz Queen

    No problem ;o)
I agree that the Aggregator isn't exactly the most elegant solution and where I work we don't use it at all. We use Captivate for 90% of all the production work and then we build our own SCORM packages with a third party tool called Reload. We do this because we want to be able to control every aspect of the SCORM communication and the SCORM manifest. Also 99% of all our course are multi-SCO courses.
I can only recommend that you put in a feature request to Adobe in regards to the aggregator issue. They are always working on the next Captivate version so perhaps this could be something for Captivate 5.

  • Setting the lesson status

    Hi everyone
After uploading my Captivate course to my LMS, I need the LMS

If you've enabled SCORM tracking (or perhaps AICC) in your
    Captivate
file, then this should be happening automatically. Are you
    seeing any
results pass from your CP lesson to the LMS? Is it
    bookmarking? What
'status' do you want to see?
Are you tracking at least one interaction and what Quiz

    do you have set?

  • SCORM 1.2 tracking Captivate 3 lesson_location

I have a client who is using Captivate 3 to author a SCORM 1.2 course. When deployed to the LMS we have experienced problems with bookmarking, in that it does not appear to work all of the time.
On investigating this further using ADL Testsuite to track the data being passed between content and LMS, I was able to establish that a "lesson_location" vary rarely written back to the LMS, even upon Save and Exit. There were a couple of slides and button interactions that trigerred data to be written to the LMS, but upon looking at the author file, there was nothing to suggest why these slides or button clicks should send back data.
    I have 2 questions.
1: Is it possible to manipulate when data is being written back to the LMS, ie, can I choose when a lesson_location is saved? The solution I am looking for would be one that is native to Captivate 3 and not a custom JavaScript solution as I need to provide it to a non developer a non developer.
2: What would be the likely cause of the lesson_location being sent to the LMS on the slides and button clicks that it did happen. Understanding this, I hope will help me manipulate it.
I appreciate any help you can provide on this.

    i HAVE ATTEMPTED TO USE
    cmi.core.lesson_location
    cmi.launch_data
to place the contents of "cmi.suspend_data" and nothing seems to restart the Captivate 4 with Bookmarks, in continually restarts the course in the beginning.

  • MISSING FROM CC | Flash with SCORM 1.2 Tracking

    Hello Anyone-
We use Flash as our main tool to create eLearning for our organization.  The CC seems to have dropped the SCORM 1.2 and 2004 tracking methods from the HTML Wrapper.
Is there any way to get this back?
    Joel

    Hello,
For AS3 projects we use Pipwerks Actionscript 3 SCORM API Wrapper for LMS communication (this includes CS6 built projects). See link below:
