Scrambled icons

My hard drive finder window always opens in Icon view and it is always a mess with everything jumbled up.
Nothing I do makes it open in column view. It always reverts to jumbled icons.

The main issue here is that the file which holds that setting isn't writable by non-root users by default; since it starts with a period, it isn't visible in the Finder by default, and the permissions on it can't be changed in this way. Using the script is easy enough; all you need to do is click on the Applications icon in the sidebar, open the AppleScript folder inside, double-click the Script Editor application, copy the script text from the thread to the Script Editor window, click the Run button, and type in your password. There are other ways of changing the permissions, but they are either longer, less user-friendly, and/or increase the chance of your system being damaged.
There isn't a technical reason why the file can't be made writable for you when Mac OS X is installed, and you can send Apple feedback on this issue. For the time being, you will need to use the methods currently available.

• Scrambled icons for Windows .EXE and .MSI files in Finder.

For some reason the icons in Snow Leopard for .exe files and .msi files show up as a scrambled image. I wish there was a way to upload a screenshot. Is anyone else seeing this problem. I do have VMware Fusion installed. Not sure if that is causing the issue.
Just to be clear, the icon are scrambled in the Finder, not in any of the VMware sessions.

I'm getting the same thing. When I look at the get info information they are associated with Windows explorer in Bootcamp, so I just changed them over to be associated with VMWare Fusion, which gives me nice plain icons.
I wish there were some way to say all exe files get a certain custom icon. Then I would use the Fusion icon.

• Date/time icon and other movable icons on menu bar cannot be loaded on startup, but it works if manually loaded

Strange things happened since my mbp 13' (MD-101) was upgraded to 10.8.4 ----------- time icon, battery icon, and language icon (these icons can be moved when held Command key and drag) cannot be loaded on startup, but they still can be loaded when you get into System Preferences and manually  turn them on, as well as iStat Menus
However, some other icons didn't bother, things like BetterTouchTool, NewsBar. They are immovable!! I guess it is the key factor that the icon is movable or not making the difference.
Someone please lend me a helping hand?
I've attached some pictures in order to make my situation easier to be understood.
these icons can't be loaded on my loggin in.
but they can be loaded manually
however, these icons will be loaded on startup
I've almost despaired to resolve it . Thanks for your help!

I have a similar issue. When the computer goes into "Hibernate" mode -- that is, it loses power while sleeping and it writes the contents of it's memory to disk in order to boot into that exact configuration when woken up -- many of my icons when Apple-Tab'ing to another application appear as static. They look like a slightly colorized version of the "static snow" you see when tuning into a station that doesn't exist on a UHF antenna television. Also, icons in Chrome such as web sites "favorite icons" or favicon.ico (the icons that appear in the URL bar and bookmarks) will be scrambled in the same fashion , at first , until the actual icon is loaded.
Between this, my menu bar and finder icons not displaying, and being unable to boot into safe mode, I'm getting quite ******. I have no idea what the **** is going on with my Macbook Pro. The issue of the scrambled icons actually existed prior to installing an SSD and doing a fresh install of Mountain Lion. I may end up throwing in the towl and re-installing the operating system but I'm sure SOMETHING will happen. It seems the latest update, 10.8.2, is absolute garbage.
What the ****, Apple? And I really don't want to take the computer to the morons at the Apple Store. They are not "geniuses" by any measure.

• Icons in menu bar and standard menus are invisible!

I'm having an issue with OS X 10.8.2 on my 15" (not Retina) Macbook Pro (late 2011, Core i7 2.4 GHz w/ 16GB RAM and SSD);
The majority of system icons in the menu bar "extras" area (that is, to the right near the date/time in the menu bar) are blank. The area where the icon would be located is responsive to clicks, and drops a menu item down upon click, but the icons themselves are invisible. The same goes for Spotlight which has a spot for it's icon and responds to the hotkey of Apple + Spacebar, but the icon itself is invisible. The only icons that are visible are third party programs that run and place themselves there such as Little Snitch, and the battery low ("red" battery) indicator icon; other battery icons are invisible.
Also invisible/blank are the icons for going back and forward in a Finder window as well as the back/forward icons in System Preferences sub-dialogs. The icons for choosing labels, changing the way Finder windows display (their view options), and a few others that I cannot name as I cannot see them are invisible as well. Icons that would normally display to the left of "All My Files", "AirDrop", "Applications", "Desktop", et cetera in the Finder window do not display, either.
I have tried installing the 10.8.2 Combo Update and using the Disk Utility "Repair" and "Verify" Filesystem options but neither fixed the issue. I have tried deleting the cached plist files for the SystemUIServer as well but there was no change in the icon display (or, that is, lack of display!).
I am running Mac OS X 10.8.2 (including the Combined Update) on the late-2011 Macbook Pro 15" w/ 2.4 GHz Core i7 (default 4GB memory and 750gb HDD; upgraded to 16GB of RAM and a Crucial M4 256GB SSD). I cannot recall if the problem started after I updated any system software or not; I upgraded to 10.8.2 via buying OS X Mountain Lion from the App Store so that I would have a copy on USB to install after replacing my HDD with my SSD. Everything worked fine on fresh installation, and I am not sure at what point the icons disappeared.
Does anyone have any insight into this problem, and more importantly, how to correct it? Please see the screenshots below for a proper illustration of the problem I am experiencing. The sole icon visible, with the two columns, is Little Snitch 3.0.
^-- Clicking the menu bar battery icon (except, there is no icon!)
^-- Finder window with the icons for back/forward, view options, icons for location list items on the left, etc. missing
^-- System Preferences dialog, with icons for the back/forward function missing.
^-- Help window with the icons for back/forward and some other function missing.
Thank you in advance!

• OS X Mavericks update 10.9.1 has mucked up my dock icons

I've just downloaded and installed OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 update from the app store which has caused my MBP (mid 2010) to completely slow down and has also mucked up my dock icons.
Some of the icons have become invisible but can be found if you hover the mouse over where they should be. Other icons appear as "scrambled" pics but again you can find what each one is by hovering the mouse over them. Each of the invisible or scrambled icons will open the app they are associated with but very slowly - i.e. if I click on what should be the Safari icon Safari will open a new browser after about 6 minutes of trying in the background.
I have restarted my MBP several times with the same result. I have turned off my MBP and then re-booted it but to no avail. I have also re-downloaded the update but get the same result.
Anyone got any idea what is going on as I am beginning to think that upgrading to OS X Mavericks is slowly turning in to a big disaster.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Now reinstall the the update. You can download directly here: Be sure to choose the correct updater for your model.

• Scrambled Windows

Does anyone have any idea why I can spend time organizing the icons in my window only to have it scrambled up the next time my computer is booted up? It had not done this until I updated something very recently, but I can't remember what. I had surrendered and set the window on list mode but the next reboot produced the same scrambled icon look (and everytime since as well). It doesn't do this with all windows but the hard drive one and one other. Also, it will not let me enlarge it and keep its new size-it always opens up more small than I want. Is there reason for concern?

Sliphorn,
"Also, do you have to keep the "Previous Systems" folders? I thought I had read before that you could not get rid of these."
If you have retrieved everything that you need from them, yes they can be eliminated.
In fact, you may recover a substantial amount of free disk space.
How many times have you Archived & Installed?
My Documents folder in is my Home account folder.
My iTunes is in the Applications folder.
My Stuffit folder is in my Utilities folder.
My Printers are in the HD's Library > Printers folder.
I'm not sure why yours are not in those locations.
I created a personal folder in my Home account folder named My Stuff, that I use to store things that are not needed by the system. That folder has numerous sub-folders.
That where I store all my personal created documents, downloads of installed updates that I wouldn't want to have to download again, installers I haven't gotten around to applying, photos, that I do not keep in iPhoto, images that I have downloaded, etc.
I'm not sure what all of your extra folders are for, what they contain, or how that were placed there, so I can't tell you exactly what can be moved.
But if some of the items were deposited there by you, it would probably be safe to create a new location for them.
If you do move anything, make sure you know how to return it to it's original location, on the chance the move creates a problem.

• Indesign / Xpress unexpetedly quits on importing files intel mac

You probably wonder, Why does he post this here?
I will explain the problem..
We have a customer who owns an intel imac on with he uses Indesign CS2 and Xpress 6.52. He has files on an apple server version 10.3.9.
When he creates a new document en starts to import files the applications unexpectedly quit when browsing a folder with contains xpress 4/5 files.
You can see the files have scrambled icons. Suddenly grey block come up on the screen and the application quits.
This problem is ONLY when connecting to the server using AFP. Via SMB no problems.
When the browsed folder is on de local desktop, no problem.
If we use indesign and switch the file browsing to the Adobe dialog there are no problems either but then the xpress files are not shown.
We have tried an fresh system on the imac. We have tried this on an other intel imac same problems.
We have tried it on our own 10.4.8 server same problem.
have cleared al caches, reset default app's database, same problem.
Does someone seen this problem before?
Thanks in advance.

Your first major stumbling block is that neither Adobe (unless you use their InCopy or VersionCue) nor Quark (unless you use their QPS) support working directly off of a fileshare, period. Really, they don't.
Keep in mind they don't state it in big bold letters on their front page(s), you have to look for it, but if you call them for support, after running around for a while they'll tell you it's not supported.
Doesn't matter that *sometimes, in some cases* it works. Or that it used to work in some past combo of client/server OSen.
Never mind that you're using Rosetta which adds a real and extra layer of potential complications.

• Aperture 3 : blank or wrong Project thumbnails

Hi,
I'm seeing some weird issue with my Aperture 3.0.2 version. I've searched and tried some things but none worked it out.
I've tried as well to repair rights/repair database/reconstruct database. Nope.
Issue is that some thumbnails remain blank (and setting the key photo doesn't make it change), while others display a picture that do not belong at all to the project.
Passing the mouse over the project either displays nothing or sometimes scrambled icons (like TV with no signal).
I'd appreciate some help here.

Thank you

I have all of my photos in the Aperture Library file and do not reference a majority of my images...for my setup I did the following:
I recently took the suggestion mentioned on this forum of rebuilding my thumbnails after installing the 3.0.2 Aperture release. I navigated to my home folder/Pictures/ApertureLibrary.aplibrary and right clicked to select "View Contents..."
I opened the thumbnails folder and trashed all the folders inside this folder.
I then started Aperture and selected the All Photos icon in the inspector. I selected all the photos and then went to the Photos menu and rebuilt the thumbnails.
This took hours (approx 32000 images).
It found 5 corrupt image. How did I know? After 6000+ images, the Activity Window said it was processing the image but NEVER advanced the count to the next image. I trashed this image (removed it from Aperture to a different folder in my Pictures folder) and force quit Aperture. I restarted Aperture and it automatically began updated the thumbnails. It got hung up again at about image 24200, and I trashed this, force quit Aperture, restarted and watched it automatically continue to rebuild images.
There was one COMMON FACTOR FOR EACH IMAGE GIVING ME TROUBLE: THEY WERE PANORAMA IMAGES MADE OF STITCHED FILES. (some were JPEGs stitched together and other pano photos were RAWs stitched together.)
I then noticed (in the inspector window with the Adjustments tab selected) that some RAW processed images reverted to the previous Aperture conversion process. I reprocessed these to the new RAW processing.
Aperture boots nice and fast. Everything seems to be purring along. Not sure about heavy adjustments as I haven't had time since the rebuild to test some of the brushes. Before the 10.6.3 update, I intend to use Aperture a little more and determine if it is "ready" for the update. I hesitate to apply updates to any computer which does not appear optimally functional.

• IPhone Restore scrambles all my iPhone Desktop Icons

I just did a restore from backup and all my desktop programs/icons are now all in the wrong spot. This is frustrating as I had everything where I wanted it and now have to spend a good half hour fixing what the restore screwed up. If it truly restores from a previous state, why are all the programs moved away from where they were? Is there an iPhone program/icon manager so that I can easily move things from one page to the next without having to do it on the phone itself?

did you do a back up right before you did the restore? are you running the latest itunes and iphone software?
before 2.1, the icons would get rearranged anytime you added/removed/updated and app. with 2.1, this no longer is the case.

• With iOS 7 there is no option to play Words or scramble with friends in 1x mode...it fills screen, is there a way to fix?

Before iOS 7 you could select to play words or scramble in 1x (size of iPhone) or 2x (filled iPad screen). With the update, the games automatically open in full screen mode and I see no way to change it. I feel like I have to set the iPad on the other side of he room to play, the image is just too big! Any suggestions?

You want to just use Dropbox until the dust settles.  To use it from iWork for iOS (assuming you have the Dropbox app installed on your device), open the document in Keynote (for example), tap the share icon (box with upward pointing arrow), choose Open in Another App, choose Keynote as your format, then choose Open in Dropbox and you will get an option to save it to your Dropbox account.  To open it from Dropbox in iWork for iOS, open the document in the Dropbox app, tap the share icon, tap Open in Keynote (for example).  It's a bit clunky, but works.
