Scratch disc full in Photoshop CS2

This may be a dumb question, but I'm new to Macs. I'm working in Photoshop and went to crop an image and a box popped up telling me that the action could not be completed because the scratch disc is full. I have searched Mac help, and photoshop help and could not find anything telling me how to correct this.
To me, if the scratch disc is full then what I would want to do is empty, or remove everything from the scratch disc. At least that's my simple minded way of looking at things. If that's what I need to do, then how do I do that?
Can anyone help me understand and correct this problem?
Thanks,
Jack

I told you it was a dumb question. I figured out the problem. I didn't realize that the scratch disc was in fact my hard drive. That was the first light bulb to go on. Then I discovered that I had inadvertently entered inches in the crop aspect ratio boxes instead of pixels, which was what I wanted. Therefor, the image I thought I was cropping to a dimension of 2336 x 3504 px was trying to crop to 2336 x 3504 inches. No wonder my 209 GB of space available on my HD was not enough. It computes to 194 feet x 292 feet. Rather large image wouldn't you say.
Anyway, sorry for such a dumb post. I was just confused enough by the scratch disc thing that I didn't give it a thought to check for some dumb slip up like transposing inches for pixels.
I do thank you for your response though...... all is well again.

  • I have PSE-12 on Mac. Got message "scratch disc full" tried changing drive to backup disc. Now PSE-12 will not open to allow me to go back to original drive. What can I do?

Using PSE-12 on my Mac and got the message 'scratch disc full' I have backup disc attached to computer and tried making this the number 1 disc. I now can't get PSE-12 to open so that I can get back and reverse the order of these discs. What can I do?

Go to your username>library>preferences and delete:
    com.adobe.PhotoshopElements.plist
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 paths
    Adobe Photoshop Elemetns 12 settings
and any lockfiles with the same names. That library is hidden in 10.7 and up. To see it, click the Go menu in the finder and hold down the Option key and it will appear below the little house for your user account. While you're in there go to the saved application states folder and delete any for PSE.

  • Scratch Disc Full: Where are the temp files kept?

    Hi,
I just tried to open a few of very large image files (9GB in total) and when I did I got the message "scratch discs full". Now I understand why that happened, but it seems to have eaten a whole load of disc space that wont come back. I've since closed photoshop, restarted my Mac, etc. but about 10 GB is still used up where it wasn't before. I can't locate any temp files anywhere (prefs only tells me the scratch disc is my Mac HD, not which folders it's in). Can anyone help me with this? Where are Ps temp files usually located on a Mac? I need those 10GB back!
    Mac OSX running Photoshop CS3
    Thank you!

Hi again Chris (or anyone else who cares to contribute),
My Mac's HD space continued to disappear and I have now, finally, located the cause (I think). I checked the system log (Stystem Profiler/Software/Logs/system.log) which was itself 4.5 GB in size (too large I think?). However, when I went to the file location (/var/log/system.log) I also noticed that the "asl" folder (in the same folder as the system log) was 20 GB in size!! Having read a few forum posts about similar issues, I took the risk of deleting both the system.log and the majority of files in the asl folder. This seems to have worked a treat (I now have 25GB returned to me).
As I said in my original post, this all started happening when I opened a few very big Photoshop docs (ones with layers). Do you have any idea what caused / is causing this to happen? I haven't opened Photoshop since deleting the asl files, but new ones still seem to be appearing in the asl folder. They are tiny (100KB at most) but I'm a little concerned I haven't fixed the problem. Any suggestions?
I can't see why new asl files would be appearing when I haven't even opened Photoshop.
    I'm running on OS 10.5.8
    Many thanks,
    Matt
P.S. By the way, the size of the system.log seemed to be caused by a repeated message regarding RealPlayer, which I assume is unconnected, but I have included it below just in case (I've removed RealPlayer from my Mac to see if that helps, but the asl files still seem to be appearing):
Jul 28 18:16:07 localhost RealPlayer Downloader[299]: Failed to create window context device
    Jul 28 18:16:09: --- last message repeated 1 time ---
Jul 28 18:16:07 localhost RealPlayer Downloader[299]: _initWithWindowNumber: error creating graphics ctxt object for ctxt:0x1152b, window:0xffffffff

  • Photoshop 7.0 scratch disc full error.

I just reinstalled PS 7.0 on my Windows 7 Pro 64bit system and PS 7 won't open due to a scratch disc error message. When I tried to install the 7.1 update, it can't find the PS 7 folder even when I navigate to it. I tried ctrl-shift-alt keys together but I still can't get it to open so I can set the scratch disc preferences. What are the shortcut keys to use? Any suggestions why I can't update PS 7? Thanks.

Your hard drive is larger than 500GB and the program can't deal with this and/or there are permission issues. Downsize the partition, make sure you have the permissions set properly. Regarding teh update you are probably out of luck. Those old versions cannot access the changed registry structure and thus do not find the necessary information...

unable to load photoshop 7 on my new computer which has 2 tb free

Your software is too old and can't deal with any partition larger than 512 GB. You need to format your drives suitably.

  • "Scratch Disk Full" in Photoshop CS3, 30MB Free"

I've been all over the net and can't find an answer.
I have only one drive (I will be fixing that problem tomorrow), a 250GB on my PowerMac G5. Disk Info says there are 50 GB Available. Photoshop preferences agree. Still, I cannot crop a lousy 4MB file.
Viewed and repaired permissions - wasn't much there, actually. Got Onyx, ran everything I could (although I don't really understand all of it), no change.
I am a professional photographer, many large (over 30MB) files, but I never ran into anything like this. I read that Photoshop runs into fragments and goes no further, even if there is empty space on the disk. At the same time I read that Tiger defragments automatically. I dunno.
Activity Monitor says I have plenty of memory.
Am I looking at a total disk formatting adventure?

    Bob,
Activity Monitor says I have plenty of memory.
"Memory" refers to RAM, whereas the "scratch disk" is your hard drive. 50 GB available before you start working with Photoshop files may seem a lot, but when you open large files, it is not that much. It may really run full. If the same is the case with a little 4 MB file (without having just worked on a 30 MB file during the same session), this is really weird.
Check your disk space with Activity Montor and select +Hard Disk load+ (or something like this; I don't work on an English OS). CPU > Memory > Hard Disk Activity > *Hard Disk Load* > Network.
Have you got an external hard drive with more than 50 GB free that you could use as a scratch disk test drive instead of your internal?

  • Scratch Disc Full?

I am trying to capture video but it says that the scratch drive is full. My hard drive has 7 gb open though. What do i do ?
    Message was edited by: homedawg678

Are we correct to assume that your scratch disk is your system drive? 7GB isn't very much space when it comes to video. You should always leave at least 10-20% of your drive free in order to insure trouble-free editing.
Your solutions are to clear space on your existing drive or get an external firewire drive (make sure it's formatted Mac OS Extended).

  • Error message: Scratch Discs Full. How do I access them and clear them?

    question?

Try turning the account off and on : Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars , then tap the account on the right, slide Mail to 'off', exit settings and go back into the Mail app, and then go back to Settings and slide Mail back to 'on'
If that doesn't work then try closing the Mail app completely : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Mail app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
Also do a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Using PSA 3 SE with Photoshop CS2 or PSE2

I have PSE2 and the full monty Photoshop CS2. As I want to create slideshows with my own background musice, transitions, etc I downloaded PSA 3SE hoping that this was the software I needed. However, in its Read Me First file it says that in order to use the full functionality for slide shows (music, transitions, etc) I need to upgrade to PSE2. But I already have that, and CS", installed but I cannot seem to integrate them with PSA 3 SE.
Any tips on what I need to do would be much appreciated. Adobe won't give me any email help/advice and I refuse to pay them $39 for a call that may not even help me!

It says upgrade to PSE 3, which includes Organizer, which is the highest functionality version of the PSA technology.
Having said that, none of these programs do a great job of slideshows.
My suggestion is go buy a "real" slideshow program. There are lots available. I like the product at http://www.wnsoft.com ProShow Gold is well thought of.

  • I cannot download Photoshop because it says my scratch discs are full ?

I cannot download Photoshop because it says my "scratch discs" are full ?

Sound like you the disk you download to is full. The Photoshop download is over 1GB in size.  Check that your download has a few GB free.

  • What does it mean when I get the message "scratch disc is full"?

Trying to work on Photoshop and I'm getting the message, "scratch disc is full".

Ultimately here is the deal. Like OS X and Windows do at the system level, Photoshop will grow a virtual memory scratch file on your hard drive if you don't have enough RAM to do what you are trying to do.
That means, step 1 in preventing the scratch file is to put more RAM in the Mac so that Photoshop doesn't run out so fast and have to shove data off to the disk to make room.
Step 2 is to put the scratch file on another disk. This is why pros have often used desktop towers, because you can put multiple disks inside them. For example, system on one disk with lots of free space, photo library on another disk so it can grow freely, and another disk that is used exclusively to hold scratch files for Photoshop and other programs that need to do the same thing like Apple Final Cut. Splitting the data streams (system, file access, scratch) like this also speeds up the machine considerably since they're not all trying to use the disk at the same time.
The way you put the scratch file on another disk is to go into the Photoshop prefs, click Performance, and assign one of your other disks as a Scratch Disk there. (Use a fast disk, not a network or USB 1.0/2.0 disk, and partitioning your main disk will not help.)
If you do this, you don't need to change your main disk at all, you don't need to manually move any files off of it. Because by moving the scratch file off your main disk, the 58GB of free space you have there will now be plenty.
I used to use a PowerBook with an external monitor as a Photoshop machine, and plugged in a FireWire 800 external as a scratch disk. Even just doing that helped a lot.

  • "Other files" eating up disc space causing 'Scratch disc is full'

First off, I have a 3 month old macbook pro running maverick, and I don't use Photoshop anymore. I use sketch. I emptied my trash, and my mail folder is not bigger than 2 gig.
I first noticed there was something wrong when Sketch kept warning me that my "scratch disc is full", and this is hampering my work.
On the left of the attachment you'll see the Storage capacity. On the right we've got a scan by Omnidiscsweeper.  Something is definitly wonky here.
As a side note, I did run disc permissions and disc verify.  I will attempt a restart now too.

  • Error message: "scratch discs are full".

I have just started using the above I cannot use the above because I get a message that says:- Cannot initialise photoshop because the scratch discs are full. I cannot get into the program to get to the edit menu to try an change the settings. Can anyone help
    Alan

    Hi Alan 12,
What operating system are you using?
How much space is left on your hard drive and what is the size of the hard drive that photoshop 7 is installed on?
The usual reason for that message on modern computers is that your hard drive has more than 1 TB of free space
and since photoshop 7 came out before such large hard drives were common, it can't read the large amount of
free space and gives the message about the scratch disk being full.
The best solution is to have photoshop 7 installed on a hard drive that has less than 1 TB of free space.
You might also try pressing the Alt+Ctrl keys just after clicking or double clicking on the photoshop 7 shortcut and keep
holding the keys until you get a dialog where you can choose another hard drive (or partition) for the scratch disk.

  • Photoshop CS2 trial to full lic - impact on LR

    Hi,
Here are what I have installed in this order:
    - Expired trial Photoshop CS2
    - Lightroom (CS2 already expired when I install LR)
I am going to reinstall a full license Photostop CS2 soon, would this have an impact on my existing LR?
    1. Do I need to reinstall LR so that LR can use (or rather can 'see')
    2. Photoshop CS2 to open individual files?
    3. Would changes on the RAW images done by LR are reflected in CS2?
    4. I like LR's Library layout, do I really need to install Adobe Bridge?
    5. If I use CS2 top open files direct from LR (bypassing Bridge), what colour management is best for both worlds? ProColor RGB?
I use a Mac by the way.
    Thanks.
    Thomas

    1. No, LR is not affected by CS2 licencing procedures. LR not even uses activiation like CS2 which is very much appreciated.
2,3 You have to ensure that you use the latest Camera Raw plugin for CS2 (ACR 3.7). If you activate the automatic update of XMP metadata you will be able to see changes you made in LR in Bridge and CS2.
    4. You do not have to. But if you are using CS2 heavily besides LR I personally would recommend Bridge
    5. It makes absolutely no difference if you open a file directly in CS2 or via Bridge concerning color management. ProPhoto RGB is very well suited to deal with 16Bit raw photos and it is the internally used color space of LR. But please note that there is no best choice. It really depends on your workflow and output.
