Scratch disk - La Cie external hardrive - missing Gb space

I was capturing footage from dv to my external hardrive in final cut express. I had about 120Gb (over 600mins). Computer crashed. When tried to capture again, computer says only have 2Gb remaining (17mins of download time). I went to system preferences - scratch disks, where the internal HD and the la Cie external HD are marked as having only 2Gb left. I know this is not true.
How can I reset the computer to get back my unused 120Gb on the external HD which does not now appear on the scratch disk?

Hi Gary.
I can't say what has happened to the space but if you download WhatSize and run it for a couple of minutes or so, it will list every file on your HD starting with the largest.
That might give you some idea of what is taking up the space:-

Also try Trashing the Preferences and reset the Scratch Disks.

  • Can I Keep My iTunes Videos On External Hardrive To keep Space Free ?

HELLO ALL........i currently use a g4 powerbook running osx and ilife 06. i have converted several videos for use on my iPod and as a result my harddrive is getting a little crowded. i have a external hardrive which i use only for storage and very rarely connect to the powerbook. i use my mac regularly for listening to music but never watch the videos on it (only through my ipod)
i would like to know if there is a way i could make the"video" library from itunes be located on my external drive but keep all my music in its normal location so i can use regularly without having to connect the external drive.....
hope you can help me, thanks in advance

sorry to inform u that it wont be possible..music and
videos are stored in the same location......but try
this out. when u got preferences go to advanced
option..over there u will find an option that would
say "copy files to itunes music folder while adding
to library".. uncheck that option......but before u
do that transfer all the videos from itunes lib to ur
hardisk...then delete those videos from the library.
then uncheck that option and add those videos to
itunes...this time videos will not get added to the
itunes library but it will be there in the hardisk...
but remember later what ever u add to the itunes from
an external source will not be added in the lib
    either..

  • Airport Disk - share an external hardrive wirelessly?

I am looking for information on the new Airport Disk feature mentioned on the new Airport Base stations to share a hardrive wirelessly on my network.
Does anybody have any information on how this is going to work?
I have the previous version of the Airport Extreme Base Station, which also has a USB port on it. Can I plug in an external USB 2.0 hardrive to my existing base station and share it that way or do I have to buy the new base station?
MacBook Pro   Windows XP Pro   Bootcamp user

Some things to note from the description
Simply connect the drive to the USB port on the back of your AirPort Extreme and — voila — all the documents, videos, photos, and other files on the drive instantly become available to anyone on the secure network, Mac and PC alike.
This implies it will work like a local iDisk in terms of how you would access the drive via Finder.
A simple-to-use AirPort Disk Utility gives you more setup options. You could set the disk to become available whenever you connect to the network.
This implies you can auto-mount the drive when you connect to the wireless network.
You could set up password-protected accounts for everybody on the network, or allow read-only access to certain files and folders. The choice is yours.
This implies you can configure by user.

  • Which is better for scratch disk?

Which would be a better solution to use as a scratch disk, a 500gb external firewire 800 drive (5400 rpm)or a seperate partition dedicated for FCP on a Macbook Pro's internal HD (also 5400 rpm)?

You don't want to use your internal for media. The system drive has enough work, just running the OS and FCP, without trying to read/write video media...particularly PRORES.
I've not worked with it, but understand it to be pretty hefty and generally requires a hefty RAID to function well.
Partitioning just makes the drive head have to jump around even more than when using a non partitioned drive.
7200 drives will be better as your external(s).

  • Problem with scratch disk in CS4

    Hi
I used Premiere Pro CS4 on my MacBook to import from my Panasonic DC-TM700 HD camera and set the scratch disks to an external disk.
But now there´s nothing on the external disk, and I got 8GB less space on my internal hard drive.
So it seems like all my footage was imported to the internal hard drive, but the promblem is: I can´t find it!
I´ve searched my mac for capture, scratch, log and premiere, but I still can´t find the folder. It´s not in the Premiere-folder in documents eather.
    Where can this folder be?
    Thanks
    Lise

I used Premiere Pro CS4 on my MacBook to import from my Panasonic  DC-TM700 HD camera and set the scratch disks to an external disk.
But  now there´s nothing on the external disk, and I got 8GB less space on  my internal hard drive.
sounds like you imported from your panasonic camera. Also sounds like you have no clue where they were being imported TO. There is one clue....which is having less space on your internal hard drive now ( 8gb). Leads us to believe that maybe you imported the video to your internal HD.
If you have any idea at all what sort of file extension your imported video would have (   eg.  AVI, MOV, MPEG, etc ) you could do a "search" on that hard drive for any files that have the extension you saved the video as.
Once you find them on your hard drive you can do what you want with them.

  • Help, scratch disk problem

I moved my scratch disk to an external firewire drive. Deleated the old one in my hard drive. Now I can't open FXEHD. It wants to start but it wont open all the way. Can someone help.

What version of FCE is this?
First trash your preferences and repair permissions. Try to launch the application, not a project. If it doesn't open, try uninstalling and reinstall the application.

  • Use Ext. HD for Scratch Disk

I have to edit a large project.... a very large project.  I have no other option but to use my MacBook Pro, and I wish to use my external hd to save my project and scratch disks.  Whenever I attempt to set my scratch disk to my external drive, PP (CS5) won't allow me to.  Why?  and can I fix this?

    What KIND of external?
If eSata or Firewire 800 you should be OK... USB is too slow for video editing

  • Set New Scratch Disk for rendering...

I finished a short film on a HD with no space left at the moment. To render the video, I'll need to set a new disk to render to, but everytime I set the scratch disks to my main drive (plenty of space left, I'm desperate) and checked the render video and audio boxes, and unchecked them on my old HD. It's a pretty messy project with files everywhere, truly unorganized. But I need to set the render folder on my main one and it is still referring to my other drive when I try to render anything, which does not have enough space left to render anything. Any solutions?
So far I've tried restarting FCP and that's it.

When you go back to your System Preferences settings, you can see your main disk as scratch disk or you see your old setting to the external one?
Try trashing your FCP preferences and setting everything again.

  • PICS NOT FOUND-MOVED TO EXTERNAL HARDRIVE??

I recently moved "my pictures" to my external hardrive due to space limitations on my laptop. My external hardrive is always connected.
When opening my Photoshop Elements and choosing pictures that exist in the library within, it shows that the system is "browsing" for the picture but can't find it. What do I need to do to have my Photoshop Elements "connect" to my pictures again like it was before I moved them to a different drive? Thanks for your assistance.

As Paige said, its always a good practice to do your organizing operations through Organizer rather than Windows Explorer. At this stage Organizer does not know that files have been moved.
So either follow above mentioned funda or use Reconnect dialog in Organizer.
    How to Use:
    - Select a missing file
    - Go to File>Reconnect>Missing File..
    - Use Reconnect dialog and map this file with the actual file on external drive
    - Now Again go to File>Reconnect>All Missing Files..
It shoudl reconnect all the file at new location if external hard drive is connected.

  • Firewire scratch disk with CS4/ 10.6.4

I'm currently using CS4 in an '07 iMac and trying to use a Newertech Ministack external drive as a dedicated scratch disk. The external drive has been erased and freshly formatted as Extended Journaled, with no OS or any other apps. This was a method(recommneded at the time) I used successsfully with a MBP running 10.5 and a LaCie external drive.
Now, when I try and designate the external as the no. 1 drive on the list in Performance Preferences, it keeps reverting back to the internal drive as #1 after restarting PS. I move the external to the first position on the list and check the Active box. The internal drive is at 2 and the Active box unchecked. When I quit PS and start it up again, the internal is back at the first position with Active checked and the external at 2 and unchecked.
Any way to make it stick?
    Any insight  greatly appreciated.
    '07 iMac 20"/ 10.6.2/ PS CS4 11.0.1/ Ministack V2 via firewire.

    Thanks for replying.
Have been doing service on a bunch of machines lately, so the journaling was done on auto pilot. Have gone back and reformatted the drive as extended.
Trashed the prefs via the 'Command/shift/option' method with no change. What's funny is that there is no " Adobe Photoshop CS Settings" folder in the Preferences folder in Library. So can't drag it to the trash.
    So back to square one.

  • Optimal Scratch Disk Setting for Notebook/Macbook Pro Users

After doing a ton of research, I came across THIS guidline for different scratch disk setups but I am still not sure what would be the best setup for me.
Here is what I am working with for my Current Projects Work Station
2011 i7 Macbook Pro with SSD as my main drive and 750GB 5400rpm HD in the optical bay.
OWC Elite Mini and Dual Mini in Raid0 for Media Storage. Both 7200rpm Drives
Currently I have my scratch disk set to the following:
SSD: Startup drive, OS, Programs, Project Files and Exports
750GB HD: Partitioned - 250GB to Backup SSD and 500GB for Photo storage and PP Scratch Disk Video, Audio and Previews
OWC Minis: Media Storage for Current Projects
My question is, what can I do to optimize my premiere pro settings?
Should I move my scratch disk to my external HD since its a faster drive?

I have a very similar setup but am using a couple pieces of new gear. Wondering if Harm or any of the rest of you have any advice.

4th-generation 3-Core Samsung MDX Controller  ensures sustained performance under the most punishing conditions
Backed by an industry-leading five-year limited warranty
I have various LaCie drives that contain projects, media, exports connected via LaCie Tbolt esata adapter. So these are drives I've had for years that are now running at 3G esata speeds.
I'm not using the 2nd internal drive for anything since it is 5400rpm. I just use it for backups, photo, music storage.
So I ususally work small projects with the projects, media, exports, renders all pointing back to the esata connected external LaCies.
Should I point media cache to the 500GB SSD my internal c drive? The answer to this is still confusing since I've read many conflicting posts in various places.
Any other suggestions for now with this setup? (External Tbolt connected raid not yet in my budget.)

  • Moving Scratch Disk mid project

I am currently in the middle of a FCE4 project, but I would like to move my scratch disk to an external hard drive. Will I run into any hiccups if I do this mid-project?

So can I specify certain scratch disks for different projects? I read in the manual and in Tom's book "Final Cut Express 4: Editing Workshop" that if I select numerous destinations for scratch disks, it will choose the one with the most space and then move on to the next one once that destination is full. But if I have several hard drives set as scratch disks, can I simply choose a specific one when I start a new project in FCE4? If so, how do I do this?

    Hello!
I don't know what version of Photoshop you are using (I'll post an example with Ps CS5, but it is similar in other versions), but I know a possible cure: check the units of the crop you are trying to perform on the image:
Are you sure that you want to crop it (for instance) 800x600 INCHES, multiplied by 300 PPI? (creating a 144 megapixels image!)
Set the unit to pixels, and you won't get that warning anymore, or change the PPI value to a smaller value.
What happens exactly? Unlike a real world crop tool, Photoshop's can be used to increase the dimensions of a document, and cropping a 1280x720 pixels document in the way the crop tool is set in the first example would create a 24.000 x 18.000 pixels one!
When you use the crop tool, it is also possible to make the document bigger by dragging the crop tool boundaries to the outside of the document. (make sure in this case that you increase the number of pixels to account for it.)

  • Scratch disk full and cannot open photoshop to fix it...

I cannot open photoshop because it says the scratch disk is full. I have been using photoshop (cs5) for 10 years and never had this problem. I recently installed cs5 on my Windows 7 computer and it worked for a few weeks, then this problem arose. I cannot afford a new version at this time but would like to use cs5 on this computer and I know it can work because it did for several weeks but now it won't and I can't follow the typical steps to remedy this situation because I cannot open photoshop. Please help!

    Hi there,
The tips outlined below came from this site.
First, if you can open Photoshop, check to see what hard drive is set up as your Photoshop scratch disk. To do this, go to Photoshop > Preferences > Performance. Then look under Scratch Disks to see which one you are using and how much free space it has. (FYI—I've included these steps for future visitors to this thread.)
    Option 1: Delete some files
If your scratch disk is very full (or the free space is low), try deleting some unwanted files from the drive (for me, "Macintosh HD" as seen in the image above) to make room for new ones.
    Option 2: Delete temp files
Search your computer for temporary files. These files are typically named ~PST####.tmp on Windows and Temp#### on Macintosh, where #### is a series of numbers. These are safe to delete.
Option 3: Defragment your Hard Disk
    Instructions for Windows
    Instructions for Mac
I hope one of these methods works for you!
