Scratch Disk & Windows 7 Default User

Hello,
I've been trying to set scratch disks for quite a few computers from the admin account to the secondary 1TB disk, for the admin acc this works perfectly fine. However, as soon as a new domain user logs in his / her scratch disk settings are back to default.
I'm quite lost right now where to start looking when it comes to settings, on all machines where this has been configured it's all been done before they entered the domain.
Is there any premiere setting/config file that hides itself somewhere within the C:\Users\Default of windows 7 or is there any other way to make the settings persist to every other account?

Simon

  • How do you change the default User in Windows 7 on a non-RAIDed 4 disk setup?

    Hi.
I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on Darling my new machine, which has a four-disk setup without RAID, like this:
    SSD OCZ -OS, Programs (C:)
    WD 2002FEAX - Media Projects (D:)
    WD 1002FAEX - Pagefile, Media Cache (E:)
    WD 1002FAEX - Previews, Exports (F:)
This setup, and because it’s unRAIDed (four separate disks), created the User file in the OS disk, right under the Programs (x86) folder, which at times causes files, which are not programs, to automatically be saved in the User file that's in the Programs disk, when in fact Programs disk is NOT meant for storage.
Further, I cannot save stuff in My Documents because that directory leads the files (that I am saving) to the User folder in the OS disk, forcing me to navigate out of there and into an alternative disk, which is time consuming, more so than if i had a directory leading to D disk.
So, I am wondering, can anyone help me change my directory to establish the default User folder in any folder other than C?
Or, if can someone refer me to Windows 7 tutorials, resourses, that are a tad more than Dummy level.
I have heard that changing around the directory as such can mess with the OS, and though not at Dummy level, I’m quite new to PC and profusely insecure about making changes to Darling at all.
    Thanks.

    Hi folks.
I would like to update you about what happened regarding my wish to move the User location to another hard disk. Heeding your warning, i did NOT attempt that, but rather, moved the location of the My Documents folder in my Library, from its default place on (SSD) disk C:/ (which is the default location because that's where i installed Windows 7,) to another disk -  D:/ called "Media Projects".
Here is how my directory looked before i made the change, my three hard disks were outside the Library directory that's on my SSD (Programs disk):
(I did that by right-clicking the My Documents folder in the left column of a browser window, to access the Location tab.)
What this did is, it put driver D:/ under Documents, which is under Library, see picture, which now enables saving documents quickly, by going from my Library directly to my D drive, however it eliminated the "My Documents" folder/possibility all together from the left-column list of folders in the Windows Explorer browser pane.
I am now trying to do the same with Music, Pictures, and Videos, i.e. to move them to D drive, but am unable to do so because right-clicking those icons in the directory does not produce the Location tab in Properties panel, and nor does right-clicking inside the files themselves.
Similarly, right-clicking Downloads, which i also want to have residing in my D drive, does NOT produce a Location tab in properties pane, though it does seem possible to change the directory manually...see picture.....but am wary....
I am still monitoring my new system, and will see if and how this change effects my system's performance.
    Thanks.

  • Laptop users: Any recommendations for a scratch disk for Illustrator CC?

    Hello everyone.
I have been reading into scratch disks and their use with Illustrator, Photoshop, etc. It seems most of the discussions have been about desktop systems though. I am currently using just a 13" late 2013 Macbook Pro w/retina. 256GB SSD and 8GB of RAM.
I actually have a new 1 TB external USB 3.0 WD drive, but I believe it's a 5400rpm and might not be fast enough to be used as a scratch disk? If not, I was thinking of either getting a 7200rpm USB 3.0 external drive, or a USB 3.0 external SSD. Perhaps something like these?
Amazon.com: U32 Shadow™ 240GB External USB 3.0 Portable Solid State Hard Drive SSD: Computers & Accessories
Amazon.com: HGST Touro Mobile Pro 1TB USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive, Black (0S03559): Computers &
Illustrator CC is currently just set to use my startup disk as the scratch disk. I don't believe I have run into any problems yet, that might have involved Illustrator needing more than my 8GB ram, and needing to use the scratch disk, but I am not totally sure, and I just want to get one setup anyways, for future use. I am also looking into using this with some light Photoshop use in the future also.
Those of you who use a laptop for Illustrator and other Adobe programs, what do you use for your scratch disk?
Also, where does Illustrator store these scratch disk temp files on a Mac? I have not been able to find any useful information through Google searching so far. Mostly just stuff related to Photoshop scratch disks. I would like to check the location these files are supposed to be stored to see if there's anything taking up HD space that I could take back, and also as a guide to see how much scratch disk space I should look into getting.
    Thanks!!!

Yes, you could do it. Remember to follow licensing restrictions. Here's an article on how to import after installing the operating system:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25773
Keep around locked in your office an external Firewire hard drive with partitions formatted for both Intel and PowerPC Macs containing all the applications and the operating systems and default user documents you want to keep. These can serve as the basis for the migration assistent import.

  • Premiere pro cs 4 defaults scratch disks to C Drive

Hi, I have this peculiar problem only with Premiere Pro CS4.
When setting the scratch disks on any drive other than the C drive, they always default back to the C drive.
This does not happen with CS3 or previous.
Premiere creates directories on the selected drive (other than C) but it dumps the preview files back on C, while the newly created directories remain empty.
This happens both on AMD and Intel machines, on windows vista ultimate.
    Any thoughts?
    Thank you

Where is your project (prproj) file?

  • Is there a way to default scratch disks in system settings?

This might be elementary, but is there a way to default the scratch disks in system settings to match the project that you are currently working on?
What I mean is when I switch from project to project my auto save files get all jumbled up.. then when I really needed to retrieve one I had to search them out in folders from different projects.... it was a mess
So as I have it now.. I have to open a project then go to system settings and switch all my scratch disks accordingly.. but I always forget to do this not to mention that it is a pain in the *** and time consuming..
Thanks in advance if you can help

I just create one master file for all my FCP projects inside it there is the autosave folder, thumbnail and waveforme cache folders.. then inside each one FCP automatically creates a seperate folder with your projects name.. so you can find them easily

The default user account picture is stored here.
    C:\programdata\Microsoft\User Account Pictures\user.bmp
It should just be a matter have copying the picture you want to that location and over writing what is there.
    or....
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\User Accounts\Apply the default user logon picture to all users
    You can also configure this by a registry setting;
     [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
      UseDefaultTile = 1
The picture that you configure, will not be loaded until the user account will actually be created on the pc. Meaning the first time a >new< user will log on to a pc, they will have no picture shown at all using their login screen (this is default
behavior). Same will occur if you enable the policy don't display last user name. However, once they log in the picture will be shown in the start menu, and if they lock their pc the image will also be shown

  • Trouble getting the default  user directory under Windows XP

I m trying to get the default user directory under windows XP SP3.
    To do so, I'm using
    System.getProperty("user.home");
I was expecting to get a path like "C:\Documents and Settings\user", nstead of that I get "C:\Documents and Settings\user\Destop".
I checked the %USERPROFILE% and %HOMEPATH% window's environment variables and both of them are correctly set ( set to "C:\Documents and Settings\user").
Is there any way to get the right path other than using : System.setProperty("user.home", "C:\\Documents and Settings\\user"); ?

    Thanks WalterLaan,
The System.getenv("USERPROFILE") method will, at least, fix the problem under win XP.
I guess i'll have to write a more refined method to be able to deploy my application under differents OSes.

  • Mounting Windows Disk within Single User Mode

A Windows machine I administer kacked and the users didn't back up all their data. Windows won't touch the drive, so I popped it in a 10.3.9 Mac... I can copy a handful of files and folders from the Finder, but some directories won't read -- there may be physical damage to the drive (if the kernel panics are any indication).
When I boot into Single User Mode, I can't get into the disk.... the disk(s) show up under /Volumes, but you can't actually get into them... only a file named .autodiskmounted shows up for each Windows partition. I'm guessing this is a product of the disk being formatted as a NTFS drive (I'm thinking that's probably what Windows XP Home used on this drive).
Can you mount a NTFS or FAT32 disk from Single User Mode? How?
    Many thanks!

    Everett
To mount a disk in 10.3.9, look at the first part of this FAQ: Resetting the System Immutable Flag in 10.3.
You will need to replace the "mount -t hfs" with "mount -t msdos", but I don't know if you would need further options.
If you can find a 10.4 system, it may be easier, since "autodiskmount" appears to work again. See: kmosx4: Resetting the System Immutable Flag in OS X 10.4

  • Create default user settings like WIndows XP

When I configure a Windows machine I can make the desktop and all application settings I want. I then copy the profile to the DEFAULT USER account. Now when any user is created on that machine it takes on all the same settings as the default account.
This allows me to set proxy settings in all browsers, setup printers, backgrounds, and other other preferences. the new account gets these settings on creation.
How do I do this on the macintosh? When it creates a new user they all look the same so there must be some plist files or settings somewhere I can change when I build the image.
We have 850+ machines running 10.4 through 10.6. We use a firewall in transparent mode because the mac's cant handle the proxy settings with all the roaming profiles and home/synced accounts.
If I can get all new accounts created to take on the necessary settings by default we can switch our firewall to non transparent and that opens up a lot of features we must have. Plus it would be nice to have the same look and feel on every single account.

/System/Library/User Template is where all of these are stored. You will have enable the root login account and log in to it in order to make changes to that folder with the GUI.
Changing anything in the System folder is always a bit unreliable, though. Apple might release a software update that will undo any of the changes.
If you really are managing 850+ Macs, you should look into getting OS X Server. OS X Server has the tools you need to set up custom templates for new users, without having to muck in the System folder.

That thread helped for a time.  But now it seems as though my computer is back to slow again.  But, some of the jargon is over my head as well.  Not sure I knew quoite everything they were talking about.  But thanks a lot for that, it helped I probably just need to reread it and follow the instructions again.  Thanks so much.

  • Elements 2.0 and Windows 7 - Scratch disks full

I have read the previous post regarding the Scratch Disks full error on starting up Photoshop elements 2.0.  I have started PSE2 holding down the Ctrl/Alt keys and have been given a prompt box where I cna change the scrtach disk locations, but the changes don't "stick".  I continue to get the same error and the scratch disk location does not change.  I started PSE2 holding down the Ctrl/Alt/Shift and got the box where I can delete the setting and have deleted them and still get the same error message.
    Any suggestions?

    Follow the instructions here:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Change-the-size-of-virtual-memory
I don't know off hand the recommended settings.  I have about 6MB pagefile size (VM) with a Vista 64 machine that also has 6MB RAM.  Elements 2 is running just fine on this machine.  You may want to go to the same relationship VM vs RAM as I have it.  If that is not enough, try to make the VM 150% of RAM.

  • Photoshop Elements 2.0 Windows 7 Scratch Disks Full

    Hello there,
I have seen a few posts about PSE2 on Windows 7, but none of them have helped get it working for me. Same deal, I run PSE2 and get the "Scratch disks full" message. I have a 1.5GB hard drive. I have tried everything and no luck on getting it working. Any new ideas would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

Here are some of the things i've had success with in older versions of photoshop (pse 2 or ps 7 and older versions) with hard drives bugger than 1tb.
    The first two always work
    1. Install windows xp mode if your version of windows 7 supports it.
    2. Install an older operating system on vmware or virtualbox.
    3. Run pse 2 as an administrator and press the Alt+Ctrl keys just after starting pse 2, and then set the scratch disk to the recovery partition on your hard drve.
    4. add a second hard drive to use as the scratch disk for pse 2
    5. Partition a part of your existing hard drve to use as the scratch disk for pse 2
    6. Re install windows 7 on partition of 1tb and then partition the rest of the 500mb for storage of files
Added: You always have the option of buying photoshop elements 10 which has no problems with hard drives bigger than 1b.

  • Scratch Disk Full error for PS7 installation in Windows 7

Can anyone from Adobe tech support tell me how to install my own copy of PS7 on my new Windows 7 computer without having the Scratch Disk Full error show up?  I am comfortable around my computer but am certainly not a tech wizard and it would be helpful if there was a set of specific steps I could take. I've read forums about partitioning but I don't want to make a wrong step and screw everything else up. Also, is this a problem with the more recent Photoshop CS versions?

Well, I've been able to install my PS-7 on my virtual drive in XP mode somehow (I got the 'disk full' pop-up, but then it seemed to install it anyway- I don't remember if it was the curse I leveled at it or what- and it still seems to run.  I can actually access images from the Windows 7 side C: drive after opening Photoshop and going to 'open/ C:/ My Photos (or whatever)', but images I open in Windows 7 have to be saved on my hard drive before I can access them in Photoshop in XP mode. I'm still not sure where the new images will be stored and if they will be able to be accessed from both XP and Windows 7 mode (my gut says "fat chance"), and I can't have my Windows 7 images open in Photoshop natively.
I have therefore decided to add to the (probably swelling) coffers of Adobe by buying a shiny, brand new, squeaky-clean, and (hopefully) fully functional copy of Photoshop Elements 10 to install on my Windows 7 side, so now I can avoid having some lame 'viewer' program open my images.  Ain't technology grand?

  • On project load, CC7.2 on Windows 8 forces me to change scratch disk location away from Mac-formatted external HDD

When I open a project saved on my external hard drive it wants to change the scratch disks to My Documents Folder.
Once I accept it, it opens the project and then I am actually able to change the scratch disks back. Weird.
It's worth mentioning that my external drive is formatted for Mac and I bought a driver from Paragon allowing my PC to read and write to it. Idk if this is where Pr gets confused.
    Windows 8.0
Pr CC latest update (todays date: 19 dec 13)
I hope someone is able to fix it.

    Hi frbra1,
The reason why you are getting this prompt is just beacause the files that are saved on your scratch disk while working on MAC have location "/Volume/name of the HD/program or file name", but when you connect that drive to windows the location changes to "Drive Name:\" . So. it is the adressing issue of the drive that you are facing with the drives. It is alo not always necessary that the drives get same name when they are attached to the machine.

  • PSE 2.0 using Windows 8 - Scratch Disk Full

I'm trying to install PSE 2.0 on a new computer using Windows 8 and I'm getting a message "Scratch Disk is full".  Can anyone help?

That's the problem, your hard drive is way too big to run photoshop elements 2.
You have only used less than 200 gb on that hard drive and the rest is free space (empty)
Photoshop elements 2 can't see all that empty space, because when it came out around 2002, pse 2 was never intended to work on hard drives bigger than 1TB, mainly
because of windows issues and hardly anybody had such large hard drives at the time.
Your best option is to find an older version of photoshop elements from pse 6 to pse 11 or buy the current version photoshop elements 12.
