Scratch files and QT player

I sent .mov files directly from capture scratch folder for a client to review. He sez that when he opened in his QT®player he got a message that "more software may be required". It opens in my QT player fine. He is a windows guy. Assuming he is up to date, shouldn't these files play? Does he need to get QT Pro?

I think then, you're (unfortunately) going to be stuck with transcoding the files to another format so the client can review.
Check this link...Tim Dashwood says:
"...You cannot decode and view Quicktime HDV files on Windows or any Mac that doesn't already have Final Cut Studio installed. The HDV quicktime component is only installed with Final Cut Studio.
On a side note there is now a free ProRes422 Quicktime decoder available for Windows and Mac..."
So changing the format to something else, and re-sending the files, I'm afraid, is the only option I see. (I don't recommend ProRes as the files are going to be large. H.264 instead?)

"Hello, Adda. Most users can use it without problems. Did you set strict permissions on your machine?
Also, is it a small SSD? you lose their speed benefit by not putting Photoshop's scratch file on it."
Most power users are having big problems, We don't put scratch files on our SSDs because we know that this will run those into the ground. They are not intended for the pounding of constant read / write cycles. We also switch off indexing and any other constant cycling technology. Again, SSDs are best use for static files. They are, in fact, intended mainly for super fast launch, which is what they do so well. Obviously, if all you have is an SSD, then you have to live with the shortened life.
I have my scratch files and my TEMP folder set to a huge and empty internal drive. I have my USERS folder hard linked to a different huge internal drive, where I also store MY DOCUMENTS. I have an even larger internal drive where I store MY PICTURES. This has worked flawlessly (and very fast) for CS5 and LR4 Beta 1. Only CS6 complains constantly.
"Yes, I agree, but sometimes, what sounds and smells like a bug is not one, hence the troubleshooting we're trying to do, before QE tries to reproduce it."
This one not may or may not be a bug. But since I own and run dozens of applications, and only CS6 is freaking out constantly, I would say that it is not normal behavior.

I'm trying to open an mpeg-2 file with Quicktime Player 10.2 and OS 10.8.2. Apple says the playback component for earlier versions of Quicktime is already built in to this version, but I'm getting video only--no audio. I'm just after attempting to play an avi file with Quicktime player on windows7 and all I got was a blank screen. Is there any particular reason that this is happening, or is quicktime incapable of playing avi files without going pro?

The QuickTime Player doesn't have the right codec for that specific AVI. Purchasing QuickTime Pro will make no difference; it doesn't contain any additional codecs.

  • How to get Music Player to play AAC files and show...

I feel the need, the need to share my recent experiences with you! Firstly to restate the already known facts: The Nokia Audio Manager in PC Suite is incapable of reading any tags as far as I have seen, from a tag (AAC/MP3) or from a CD itself and it crashes on my pc after sending 2 albums to my phone or on initialising once the phone has 2 albums already on it - so I've binned that. iTunes creates .m4a files which are AAC files but in mp4 containers with mp4 tags. The N70 will play AAC files and read ID3 tags up to v2.3 Here's how to get musak on your N70 with tags and artwork. 1. get yourself copies of dbpoweramp 11.5, their AAC codec (the Release 5 one) and The Godfather and install them 2. Go into the dbpoweramp config, select the ID tag tab and change the tag to ID3V2 for AAC. check the version field is set to v2.3 3. Use Poweramp's CD Input to rip a CD (you can specify under options to use AAC (Advanced Audio Coding (CLI)), you can custom the folder/filenames and set the bitrate (I use 100 BVR which creates files about the same size as MP3) 3.5. Rename any file that has an apostrohpe in the filename - removing the apostrophe - as the Music player will not read the tag 4. Go onto Amazon.com, find your CD and save the artwork image to your PC (create a folder for artwork) 5. Run The Godfather, select the folder containing the ripped album, click on the 'TAG' button, tick the picture box and click the button to it's right and browse for the .jpg file you just downloaded. then click on Update which will bring up the edit dialog, check that the picture is visible at bottom right and is ticked and then click 'Update All', then 'Sync' and then 'Exit'. Finally, click on the 'Apply' button 6. Transfer the folder to your My Music folder on the MMC 7. Run the Music Player and select Options-Update Collection 8. Now go into Albums and you should see your album title. Click on it and you should see all tracks. Click on a track and you should see, in the playing window, the artist & track and the artwork too. It has taken me weeks to get this far but for me, it is worth it. I hope this system works for you too Regards, Brian.

It sounds like a dud program.   I would remove it (highlight its icon, then Options -> Remove).  If you don't see a remove option, look for the program in the Application Manager.

  • VLC Player will not Display Subtitles for AVI/SRT Files and Some MKVs

For some reason, I have never been able to play AVI files in VLC with SRT subtitle files. If I drag-and-drop the subtitle onto the video while playing, I see the entry add to the "subtitles" menu in VLC and I can select that but nothing shows up on the video itself. Subtitles seem to work fine in ISO DVD images, DVDs during playback, and an MKV file I acquired from a friend. I recently started using mkvtoolnix to mux MKV files from the pairs of AVI files and SRT files I have but it seems the subtitles never work on those either. On the Windows build of VLC, the subtitles for the exact same files work fine. I have tried changing the line breaks in the SRT files from Windows-style to UNIX-style but it hasn't helped. On Linux, I am using all the newest versions of the software from core/extra/community. Does anyone have any ideas? Is anyone else having this problem?

I hate VLC: here's the vlc haters manifesto!
    Gentlemen, I like VLC.
    Gentlemen, I like VLC.
    Gentlemen, I love VLC!
I like AVI, I like RMVB,
    I like 120fps, I like interlacing,
I like rainbowing, I like the dot crawl, I like blocking.
I like the ringing, and I like tinny audio.
On a computer, a DVD player, a PS3, on a Mac, on an Archos.
I truly love each and every kind of artifact man can encode to a file.
I like the broken ASS support when even the simplest of lines fails to render correctly.
When the translator's notes overlaps the main dialogue, it makes my heart dance!
I like when an encode displays like it is corrupted!
It always left a warm feeling in my chest when they would check the CRC, only to find it is correct.
I like it when #darkhold encoders post on AnimeSuki and RAGE about the topic at hand.
I recall how much it moved me, seeing how epic longposts were made, how they would
shun the subject again and again, even though it wouldn't die. And it's painfully exciting
when a leecher posts about how great it is in the same thread.
And how wonderful it is to have 120fps for a show that is a constant 23.976!
And that pitiful resistance, encoding to h264, despite it being harder on the CPU.
I even remember when XviD had a 10:1 leecher ratio!
I like it when the MKV fanboys are thrown into chaos. And when the VFR feature they
are supposed to be promoting is violated repeatedly... oh how very sad it is.
I like it when the detail and sharpness in HD encodes are crushed and obliterated!
And them being filtered, smearing and ghosting and looking worse than a standard DVD.
Gentlemen, what I want is a low bitrate hell.
Gentlemen, my compatriots, leechers, you who abuse my XDCC bots... gentlemen, what
o you desire? Do you also want eyecancer? Is a return to the age of VCDs what you want?
Do you yearn for a VHS encode that stretches the very limits of poor quality, the artifacts
so intense that it makes Stevie Wonder cringe?
Very well then, we shall have VLC.
    It's funny because it's true
For watching videos that don't have their subtitles burned in to the image I would prefer MPlayer. With a few settings it works really well (or has worked for me, so far.) The only problem with MPlayer is that by default, it uses it's own font for subtitles. This is easily fixed, however. Edit your ~/.mplayer/config as follows:
    embeddfonts=yes
    ass=yes
This will fix the problems with MKV's atleast. I can test this with SRT / avi combo really soon too. I know this isn't really an fix to the problem at hand, but VLC just isn't too good with softsubs.
embeddedfonts works only for fonts embedded into mkv containers for use with ssa or ass stylized subtitles, I think.
The man page state it's enabled by default if you have a recent fontconfig:
    -embeddedfonts (FreeType only)
Enables extraction of Matroska  embedded  fonts  (default:  dis‐
abled).   These fonts can be used for SSA/ASS subtitle rendering
(-ass option).  Font files are created in  the  ~/.mplayer/fonts
                  directory.
NOTE:  With FontConfig 2.4.2 or newer, embedded fonts are opened
directly from memory, and this option is enabled by default.
ass means mplayer uses libass to render ssa and ass subtitles; srt subtitles aren't affected by this option.
I agree with you though that where windows has CCCP, linux and mac have mplayer

  • Moving project and scratch files when finished?

Last question I have about this being new to premiere, is people keep telling me to use my internal drive as a scratch disk, I've decided to do so. However, when I finish a project, I want to move them off of there, but I also want the ability to move them back to there if I'm working on a project once again. Therefore I don't want to delete them and have to render new previews or anything else.
Is the best way to move this, to simply go up to project settings, and change the scratch disk location? Can I move the Cache by changing it's location as well instead of deleting it? And then when I want to work on the project a year later, can I open it up and change it back to my internal SSD and move it back and forth? Or is this a bad idea?
The main reason for this is I don't want my hard drive filled up that I have to do other things on, but I don't mind it using it while editing. I also don't want it going into my weekly time machine backups.

OSX 10.10.3, newest version of premiere, Projects go to 4tb USB 3.0 drive, Cache was going to 1tb USB 3.0 drive, then scratch disk was going to 250 SSD external usb 3.0 drive. However, the internal is fast. USB 3.0 read speeds are about 400 and write speeds are about 400 on the SSD. Internal both are around 800.
What I'm thinking about doing is using the internal SSD as a scratch disk as well as running the program. Keep project and cache the way they are. But when I'm done with the project, can I go into project settings, scratch disk and move it to the same drive the project is on? This is not to use it as a scratch disk, but allowing me to keep and store the files and clear the computer internal drive for the next project.
And if I go back a year later and want to work on the same project, put the scratch files back on the internet by going to the options and doing the same thing in reverse? Is this a good or bad idea?
I can't install a second SSD drive internally, as I am working from a MacBook Pro, it has a 750M 2GB GPU. i7 Quad core 2.6 processor. I'm using a thunderbolt display, as the 15" inch is too small for me to color grade correctly seeing both the tools and video.
If it's a big project, I open the macbook and use the macbook screen for my scopes and effects and the 27 inch for the video I'm editing.

My QuickTime player us not playing .avi files and says I need a codec I can't play no .avi files on QuickTime. How could I fix this because I want to play these files with QuickTime.

Hmm . . . comes with a Utility MPEG2 Component ML app with no explanation of what it's for?
The utility app is an "assistant PKG installer." It allows Lion and Mountain Lion users to install the older QT MPEG-2 Playback Component installer PKG file which is not allowed to run on its own under Lion or Mountain Lion since these operating systems already have a QT X only MPEG-2 component embedded in the QT embedded structure. Without this utility you would have to either copy the component from an older system to your Lion or Mountain Lion system, use Pacifist for installation, or manually open the PKG contents and transfer the component to the appropriate component folder.
As to your "discussion" regarding the playback of AVI file types, there are really only two strategies here:
    1) You can add component support so that QT can play the files natively or
    2) You can convert the file contents to compression formats that are natively compatible with the unmodified QT component configuration.
Each user should decide for his or her own self which approach best suits their needs for a particular source file. In most cases, conforming the system's codec component configuration to play the source file directly results in higher video quality since no transcoding takes place but this strategy will not work if a codec which is required is not available for the user's operating system. On the other hand, converter utilities tend to support more built-in codecs and are easier to use since the user does not have to concern him or herself with the nature of the particular source compression formats but at the risk of some potential loss in visual quality. As to what converter to use, once again this is a matter of personal choice. In the case of commercial converters like iSkysoft, the codecs are built in while MPEG Streamclip accesses the host operating system's QT codec component configuration. I personally prefer the free HandBrake app for AVI, MKV, TS, MTS, and M2TS conversions since it has an exceptionally full-featured X.264 GUI with some user options that 97% of users are likely to never use.

  • Data File And Scratch Disk

Searching the forum I have not found a very clear answer as to whether having the data file you are working on be on a separate hard drive from the scratch improves performance.  I have finall found what seems to be an answer here:
    http://macperformanceguide.com/OptimizingPhotoshop-Conclusions.html
To quote the important statement regarding this:
"It’s OK for the scratch volume to use the same physical hard drives as your data volume; access to the original file and scratch volume is almost always at different times, so there is little or no head contention"
Therefore it appears to me that if the physical scratch disk is divided into two partitions then one partition can be used as a scratch disk and the other to store the files being worked on.  Does this make sense?  I would assume that this is also true on a Windows machine or is there any reason to believe otherwise??
    Howard

With still images, it will probably make less of a difference, as the image file is read from the HDD, when Opened. It is not accessed again, until you Save. Now, there will be a short period of time as the image data is read, and also probably written to the Scratch Disk, but that will be quite short.
That said, I always keep my media drive(s) separate from my Scratch Disks to allow for the best throughput. With the price of HDD's, there is almost no reason to NOT split the duties of the physical HDD's (note the word "physical," as you do not want partitions). Fry's (Western US retailer) just had a Seagate 1.5TB ATA-300 for US$89.00. Obviously, an eSATA II will cost more, but you get the idea.
I've always kept my Scratch Disks on empty HDD's, going way back. Obviously, a faster HDD for Scratch Disk would have a bit more benefit, than it will for the media drive.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
