Scratch hard drive crashed! Any recovery ideas?

So my scratch drive is a 1TB Seagate portable drive with a thunderbolt adapter. It has the raw files as well as the project files and auto-save files. I have a back up of the raw video files but not the project file. The .PRV folder for the project is still sitting here on my computer's local drive (iMac) with several .xmp and .mpgindex files in it. After a full week of editing, I finished a project, exported it. Created the custom DVD menu and was halfway through burning when I got a hardware error through Encore CS6 (Sense Code: 30c00). Tried again, gets halfway through then error. Thinking it was my computer, I copied the Encore files to the portable scratch drive (which seemed to be working fine btw at that point), ejected it and put it on my other iMac to burn from there. The drive wasn't recognized. I brought it back to the original computer and now it wasn't recogzized there either. Oh crap. The drive lights up, sounds like its working, but just doesn't show up using any of its adapters/ports (thunderbolt, usb, firewire).
I'm dealing right now with data recovery options through Seagate ($$$$) and Best Buy but in the meantime. Does having the project's PRV folder do me any good? Again, I have a back up of the raw video files...I just need the Premiere Project file. On my way to Best Buy now to see if its the enclosure and not the drive that has issues (read somewhere that that might be the issue since it is lighting up when plugged into the computer and it is running, just not showing up).
I know it's probably a long shot, but I'm sure you all can understand what I'm feeling right now having finished a huge project. Just checking in here to see if there's some other magic way of recovering a Project File without the drive that it's stored on?
Nightmare.

Well...no replies but that's okay.  It's been a whirlwind 24 hours with no luck at recovering anything off the crashed hard drive at Best Buy or via Seagate Tech Support. Just as I sat down to re-edit the project from the beginning (ugh!) after about 60-70 hours of work lost a thought hit me:
"When auto-save reaches the maximum number of copies, it starts replacing the oldest ones. Does it replace them, or write over them?"
Either way, I thought maybe it's worth looking into recovering deleted files and sure enough, I googled just that and found www.recovering-deleted-files.net  ...Now this may sound like a commercial but you can imagine how floored I was to do a quick sweep of my local drive and there they were, my .prproj files waiting there for me!! Even though my original project files and auto saves were on the crashed hard drive only. A quick $99 bucks (to actually unlock the recovery part of the app (the search part is free)) and I had my project files back!!!
Now, everyone reading this may not care, but my day instantly did a 180 and I felt like sharing. Who knows maybe someone else will one day hit this thread looking for a way to recover their crashed project files. Now, what's weird is that there were like 5 different recovered project files and each one contained only one of the four original sequences and files associated with that sequence. There wasn't one single project file that had all of the sequences that I edited like the original project file did, but right now, I don't care. I had to redo a few of the image files that I had in there that I had created in PS and saved on the crashed drive but because I had the original video files, I just link/located the videos and I'm back in business...literally.
Going forward...I think I may have my auto-save folder on a different hard drive than my project files. Just in case. Also, looks like I'll be looking into a good, new fast external scratch drive for my mac. What a day.

  • Hong Kong vs Canadian hard drive + Rescue and Recovery FROZEN at Installing Language Pack

    Hello everyone,
I have a Lenovo T61 Widescreen (Type: 7658CTO) that I bought in Canada in May 2008. Unfortunately my warranty has expired.
I had some problems with my 1st hard drive (which came shipped with my Canadian machine) and so had it swapped with a new one using Lenovo's Hong Kong On-Site service in January of this year (I now live in Hong Kong).
I am trying to do a Rescue and Recovery (full system restore to factory settings) using the Hong Kong drive, but it is frozen at "Please Wait, Preload Customization in Progress...." There is an accompanying command line screen that says "Installing Chinese Hong Kong language pack". At the top of this command line screen it says "Select X:\Windows\system32\cmd.exe - call c:\swwork\autoex.cmd"
It has been frozen for over an hour. I have tried rebooting but it freezes again at "Please Wait, Preload Customization in Progress..."
I do not have Rescue and Recover CDs as they were not an option at the time I purchased my machine. In the past, I have several times successfully recovered and reinstalled from my hard drive partition on my Canadian hard drive.
Both Canadian and Hong Kong hard drives were running English Windows Vista Home Premium Edition.
Unfortunately, I do not have my Canadian hard drive anymore because I had to hand it over to the Hong Kong technician in order to recieve a new hard drive.
Could it be that the Hong Kong On-Site Warranty service merely made a Ghost Image of a English Vista config without copying the necessary back-up partition to the hard drive?
Any other ideas for why my Rescue and Recovery is frozen???
    Thanks!
    Richmond

    Hi,
    Your question is confusing.
"Factory recovery" option creates self-contained media with the full image of the OS + needed drivers and is bootable, so you can boot from it and install OS+drivers to the original state. When you bought your machine, it should have a "Q" partition (possibly hidden) that holds this image, and that is what is copied to the media plus the boot environment.
"Create rescue media" from the advanced menu in Rescue and Recovery makes a bootable disk that you can use to boot the computer from, and on it will be a separate little version of R&R that lets you choose to restore from a backup or from factory disks/images. It does not (if I am right) have an image of the OS or drivers. However, it does (if I am right again) search your connected drives for such images and will offer you to restore from one if it finds one.
It seems to me that when you used rescue media, you probably booted into the rescue media but then might have restored from a non-Lenovo windows image? Did you by any chance have a drive with a non-Lenovo Windows installation disk connected?
Also, the fact that R&R is a 32-bit program should not affect what OS is restores; it restores whatever is in the image.

  • Any way to get music from ipod back into library after hard drive crash?

I just survived and am recovering from a hard drive crash. For some reason, on my backup, I only retained about 500 of my 2500 songs in my library. All of my music is intact on the ipod however. Is there any way at all to resolve this issue and get the music from the ipod into the libary, or in the alternative, any way to back up the stuff on the ipod? Thanks.

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible - Windows version only)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Mac mini hard drive crashed. The ecovery drive only offers to reinstall mavericks on the recovery drive. Doesn't see the hard drive. What can I do?

Hi, I have a mid-2011 with Mavericks installed. It crashed. I can boot into recovery mode. And it shows me the name of the hard drive and the recovery partition. When I boot back to the hard drive, it gives the grey screen and a long progress bar. WHen the progress bar eventually fills up, the computer just shuts down. In recovery mode, Disk Utility says the hard disk cannot be repaired.
But when I try to re-install Mavericks from the Recovery Partition, it only shows the recovery partition as the destination, not the rest of the computer.
    Not sure what to do.
Thanks if anyone has any advice.
    J

Thank you very much for the reply.
Indeed, Disk Utility can't even erase and reformat the drive. It's toast.
This is very disappointing. Second Mac Mini I've had go out this year. First seems to be a logic board issue. Now the hard drive on the newer machine.
At least I was able to use Disk Drill to get photos and other important files off the Mini. I had a Time Capsule, but last year, it too died (just a few months out of warranty).
One further question, if you don't mind. If I'm just going to replace the HD on the mini, I'm not sure why one would do this step that you suggested: "get a new HD, put it in an enclosure or use another method that allows the HD to be connect to the Min. Then boot to the recovery partition and install Mavericks on the new HD."
Also, maybe I can replace the drive on the mini myself. Maybe get an SSD for it? They seem more reliable.
Thanks again for taking the time to answer me.

  • Touchsmart IQ524 hard drive crashed. Ran Recovery CDs and I get an error Windows can not install on

I have an HP Touchsmart IQ524 which the hard drive crashed.  I replaced the hard drive with the exact same model.  I run the Recovery CDs (which I purchased from HP website) and it goes all the way through the process and after the reboot I get a message that "Windows can not install software on this hardware" - so it never completes the process.  I have formatted the hard drive and bought and returned 3 hard drives.  Any suggestions and assistance will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi:
I love recovery disks when they work, and HATE them when they don't.
Fortunately, I have a workaround for you which isn't as good as a recovery disk, but it is better than pulling your hair out, and getting nowhere.
First of all, before you try this, did you perform the recovery with only the keyboard and mouse connected?
Did you buy the same size or larger hard drive?
If your answer to either question is no, then that may be the problem.
    Now to the workaround...
If you're up to a slight but rewarding challenge you can make your own if you can read your 25 character Vista product key on the PC.
Just download the 3 files you need at the link below, and read all of the instructions to create a bootable DVD installation disk using imageburn.
Disregard the part of the text under the first screen shot about "extract the files to the Vista folder."
The files were already extracted to that folder when you ran the X14.exe file by reading the text on top of the first screen shot.
The other thing I noticed is on the 4th screen shot, where it shows Developer ID Microsoft Corporation. I had to type Microsoft Corporation in myself, and then the other codes automatically populated.
When I went to compile the ISO file, ImageBurn gave a message that about a WIM file and ISO, and if I wanted to burn it in a different format.
I selected No, make the ISO file.
It was not that hard to do. I burned both the 64 bit disk and the 32 bit disk in case I ever need them.
I tested both of them on my hp dc7100 CMT desktop PC, they worked perfectly.
When you enter the product key, it knows what version of Vista you have.
    http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/w/microsoft_os/3317.2-3-microsoft-windows-v....
After you successfully install Vista, you can then install the drivers from your PC's support and driver page.

  • Hard drive crashed awhile ago, got new one but now some of my purchased iTunes songs are showing they are downloaded but NOT in library and it won't let me download to library.  any help?

Asking for help getting previous purchases on my ipod touch and iPad... my computer hard drive crashed and I replaced it.  My music was a mess.  I restored most back but some of my purchased music is saying it is downloaded but it is nowhere to be found.  I don't understand why I can't get the music I already paid for back in my library.  Any help?   would be appreciated...

You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    Are you doing this?
You have to sign in and download each iTunes account individually.

  • My hard drive crashed on my apple computer recently. I have a new one, but it won't sync with apple tv1, and I want to retrieve my photos from teh appletv1. It appears in devices now, but won't let me go any further with it. Help

The hard drive crashed on my apple computer and I lost a lot of photos. I want to recover them from my apple tv1, but the computer won't seem to pair up with the apple tv. The Apple tv does appear in devices, but it won't let me go any further. The 'apply' button is a pale grey colour and you can't click on it. Help!!

there is no facility to recover your photos from the appletv.
the only way to link the appletv to your new "system" is to remove the existing itunes link and then link it to the new itunes - this will delete all content from the appletv though.

  • After hard drive crash, Pages app brought over, and upgrade to snow leopard installed, Pages would not launch.  Re-downloaded the 3.0.3 update and Pages launched, but will not open any documents or start new document.

After a hard-drive crash, Pages application was brought over from the old hard drive, and upgraded to snow leopard.  However, Pages would not launch.  I do not have the disks and the computer was given to me by my son with iWork 08 installed, so I do not have the ability to re-install using Purchases.  I re-installed the update 3.0.3, which I already had, but thought it worth a try.  That enabled Pages to launch, but it will not open a new or old document.  I can see in preview the document, but it will not open.  Any suggestions besides repurchasing Pages.  I've just put out a lot of money for a new hard drive and retrieval of apps and docs from the old hard drive and would like not to have to put more money in it.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

You can not simply drag over Pages, particularly if it was perhaps damaged in a crash.
As it was only Pages '08 it may be time to upgrade to Pages '09 from the App Store. It is not that expensive and will allow you to install it on any Mac sharing the same Apple I.D. and protect you from a repeat of this problem.
There are free alternatives to Pages if you are hard strapped, it depends on what you are using Pages for, it is not the only option by far.

  • HT1473 My laptop hard drive crashed and I lost my ringtones, but they're still on my iPhone.  If I sync my iPhone with the reimaged hard drive, I'll lose the ringtones from my iPhone.  Is there any way to transfer ringtones from my iPhone back into iTunes

My laptop hard drive crashed and I lost my ringtones, but they're still on my iPhone.  If I sync my iPhone with the reimaged hard drive, I'll lose the ringtones from my iPhone.  Is there any way to transfer ringtones from my iPhone back into iTunes?

Thanks, but ringtones not purchased from iTunes, created them just before computer crashed.just before the next scheduled biweekly backup.
I found and downloaded TouchCopy 12 for PC and was able to copy the ringtones from my iPhone to my Windows laptop very easily.  It also enables you to transfer photos, memos, voice messages, etc.

  • Hard drive crash, errors 10031 & 10007. What do I do next I have no ideas?

We had a hard drive crash yesterday that was unrecoverable.  I have installed a new hard drive and software (windows ME).  I also reinstalled the labview version 5.1.1 and ni daq 6.9.1.  I keep getting an error (10031) that the specified scxi chassis does not correspond to a configured scxi chassis.  I also get error (10007) that a channel or port is out of range.  How can I resolve these issues, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

    Hello numatics,
Can you give us some more information about the circumstances in which these errors occur?  Do these errors occur when trying to run the test panels in Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) or within a program you've written?  If you are using an SCXI signal conditioning system, you will need to configure that system in MAX under Devices and Interfaces.  Directions for how to do this can be found in the Getting Started with SCXI Manual (see chapter 2).
Another thought is that it is required to install your software in a particular order.  First install LabVIEW and then the NI-DAQ driver software.  If you performed the installation in a different order, you can always go back and repair your NI-DAQ installation or perform a complete uninstall and reinstall.
If this doesn't help, let us know some more information about the hardware you are using and when these errors occur.
