Scratch removal tool

For those of us who have large negative archives, a scratch removal tool would greatly reduce the trips to PS. I understand that the need for a scratch removal tool will diminish as the user base migrates to 100% digital, but we're still a long way that day.
Thanks for your consideration.
Ketzie

If you have huge numbers of them, Filter - Noise - Dust & Scratches right in Photoshop.  If they're always lighter than the surroundings (e.g., a negative scan that's been inverted), you can limit the effect with Edit - Fade - Darken afterward.
Or if you're willing to do some hand work, and ensure inadvertent things won't be changed, you can select  the Spot Healing Brush Tool, set it to Content Aware mode and just dab the spots.  Photoshop is pretty good at making up fill data.

  • Scratch removal: Does Ps CS6 have a tool for that?  Or are there plugins?

Scanning old slides often shows large scratches and specks.  How can they be removed?
I use Photoshop CS6, does it contain tools for that?
    Or are there plugins?
What I'm looking for is a Scratch Removal tool like I find in Silverfast 8SE (have one bundled with my Canoscan 9000F scanner) called SDR (I don't mean the iSDR which used the sanner's ínfrared).
It automaticllay searches out scratches, marks them in red, lets you adjust how strongly it hunts for them, sizes etc.
Then when you like it, click to remove them.
    Very useful!
Two problems: it only works in conjunction with scanning, can't open an existing file.
And it only handles 8bit color depth.
I suppose full versions of Silverfast won't have these limitations, but that would mean quite an expense.
Since I have invested in Ps CS6 I'd want to keep to that.
Maybe I'm overlooking what's already in Ps?  Or in available plugins?
    Please help,
    Sverker

  • Dust & scratch removal

Is there a function in A3 for dust & scratch removal - NOT doing it manually, but over the entire photo or selected area? Or, is there a plug-in available, such as the dust removal one for Photoshop?

The problem with the PSE user interface is that it is a high-end painting/publishing/retouching tool (PS CS) with a complex menu & dialog box structure, upon which:
    * features have been removed wholesale (curves, scripting, etc.)
    * features have been removed partially (color management, etc.)
    * features have been added (Variations, Process Multiple Files) resulting in more menus, more modes
    * a completely independent application has been unceremoniously glued on (Organizer)
It is, in a word, a MESS.
As I've said before, the technology is great but the user interface is a disaster.
Honestly, I would leave PSE alone and sell it as a "painting" application. Then I'd come out with a new product designed for photographers/snapshooters. I would:
    1. take a 'light' version of Apple's Aperture
    2. add selections/masking [the nondestructive, resizable, Ansel Adams Zone-based selections/masks in LightCraft's LightZone are very cool!)
    3. add simple layers (maybe even the tool-specific layers as in LightZone)
    4. and then do usability testing. You know, clicking on text shouldn't just select the layer, it should allow you to edit the text. Jeez, how difficult is that for a consumer program?

  • Scratch removal etc.

Saw specs of LR 6 and I am still missing scratch/dust removal.
Other useful Tools that we can hope for. is:
redeye removal tool often does not find any red Eye it would the be easier to just
put the blue dot where I have marked the red cross rather than mark that Lr cant find any red eye
and the the hand for moving the blue dot is too large and it is often covering the Eye, could it
    not be beside instead.
And why is the function "paste from previous" undimmed before it is possible to use?

No, you saw an unfounded rumour which might have no bearing whatsoever on what Adobe finally rolls out with Lr 6.
If you have actual feature requests for Lightroom, why not post them in the relevant forum?

  • Dust and Scratch Removal PSE 6 3rd Party Programs ?

I've currently got PSE 3.0, going to upgrade to PSE 6.0, but also looking for even better Dust and Scratch Removal than PSE 6.
    Any suggestions ?
    [email protected]

Yes, "Dust and Scratches" does work on PSE5. I've used this filter on the two pictures at: http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/cooper213/dustscratch.jpg
On the left is the original of a scan of a 40s snapshot. On the right is that image with one pass of the Dust and Scratches filter.
You can't just apply D&S without some experimenting with the Radius and Threshold. The higher the R & T, the more the noise is removed, but the more the image is blurred. I used a very low figure for both Radius and Threshold. I would not stop here with the editing process.
I'd use the Healing Brush tool to remove some of the remaining noise on the black coat. I'd do some sharpening, and possibly sharpen only the figures by creating a Selection so the clapboards on the house don't start to look wonky.

  • LightRoom3 LR3 - Spot Removal tool soooo sloooooow

LR3 is generally working fine for me.
It was slow to start with, but I saw that it was doing a lot of disk acivity in the background when I upgraded from 2.7 -> 3
I left it alone to do it's think and it's been fine for the last week.
BUT .... one thing thats changed (for the worse) is the spot removal tool.
    It's so slow it's beyond a joke.
It almost looks like it's trying to completely render the image where I'm only interested in a small part of it changing.
Where I could adjust to the pixel and release it to re-render, now I get to move the spot destination swab for about 4 seconds then it stops .... and I have to wat for almost a minute for it to finigh picking it's nose (or whatever it's doing) before it comes back.
Then I have to try fine tune it again, but if I don't get it right then I either have to guess it or wait another minute before it lets me move it again.
I have an i7 CPU and virtual CPU #4 goes 100% while it hangs. All the rest bounce about at 10-15%
So frustraiting. What should be a quick atch/repair tool has become unusable.
My only workaround is to export to CS and patch/clone in there ... unless it's sensor dust in which case it can take up to 20 minutes just to de-spot a picture and batch process across a set.
    PC spec:
    XP64 SP2
    i7 CPU
    12Gb DDR3 1866
SSD primary and scratch disk (same one partitioned)

Right .... I think I might have cracked it.
I noticed that TIF files were much worse than .NEF or .DNG.
The Raw files would be a bit more tolerant and I tried setting the write to .xmp to [on] and it improved a bit, but after a bit of editing it would become sluggish again on all tasks ...
If I switched off the [xmp] write AND the "Include metadata changes in TIFF/JPG PSD files" it becomes a lot more responsive.
All I have to do is Ctrl+S after I'm done and the Metadata is written (within a second).
I think that LR keeps trying to constantly update the metadata and catalogue + render all together and it couldn't keep up (even though I use SSD and have an i7 with 12Gb 1886 memory).
I also had an extra boost by telling the system to create 1:1 previews of the files I'll be editing. This takes some time depending on the source data  sizes and compression (go make some tea), but it improves performance by doing all the initial start-point rendering in advance rather than on the fly.
I can now work at normalish speed again (Yay!). It is still a bit more clunky than LR2.7, but it's useable again and it is faster in other areas.
NOTE: By switching off the auto-update XMP and Metadata features, you could potentially lose edit updates to your files and updates don't transfer when the files are opened in other apps.
To avoid this you only have to do the Manual save of changes to the files by pressing Ctrl+S or manually in the menu:
Metadata | Save Metadata to File
After you do that all other apps pick up the updates to the files

  • Very Slow Spot Removal Tool in LR5?

    Hello,
Has anyone else noticed the SPot Removal tool being very slow in LR5?  I don't even mean when painting a selection.  Just moving the mouse around the screen is sluggish and jittery for my on my Win7 system.
    Thanks for any suggestions,
    ~Steve

I am running Windows 7 (64 bit) with an i7-3930k processor (12 cores at 3.2GHz), 64 GB RAM, an SSD boot and app drive, a separate SSD scratch drive for Adobe stuff, and 2 GeForce GTX 580 GPU's (3 GB video RAM each).  WIth this setup, I wouldn't say that LR4 ran perfectly, but it was a lot better than LR5 is running for me.
I haven't gotten out of the Develop module with LR5 yet, so I can't say anything about printing or exporting, but most of the adjustment sliders are stickier than in LR4.  It takes a few seconds for any adjustments to be seen on the image after moving the slider.  This was most noticeable for me with the local Adjustment Brush.  Painting the mask work fine, but after that any adjustments take 3-4 seconds to appear on-screen.  The adjustments like Sharpening and Noise Reduction under the Detail panel take a few seconds to appear.  I know I'm asking for help here, but please understand that I don't have time to check every slider and function within the application.  It's very obvious to me that LR5 runs much slower than LR4.4 on the same computer.

With TSM adware removal tool I was able to remove unknown software that was making ads pop up when using Safari. So the y don't pop up anymore. The problem now is that when I open safari It is still downloading websites and after awhile it freezes the browser. I have to constantly go to Safari Preferences to remove them and then the browser will start working again. What can I do to stop this?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • I have lightroom 5 but the visualize spot removal tool is not showing up?

  • Where has the colored fringe removal tool gone in ACR 6.7?

Having just updated ACR to ver 6.7 (6.7.0.339) I am surprised to find that the colored fringe removal tool in the Lens Correction palette has disappeared. All that there is now is Transform, Lens Vignetting and the relatively useless Defringe.
I thought updates were supposed to provide enhancements, not remove things. What else has been taken away?
I use this tool a lot and would like to get it back. If it has been replaced with something supposedly better, then what and where is it? Have I missed something?
Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Yes, there is lots of useful information here, and thanks for directing me to it. The claimed improvements to fixing chromatic aberrations in digital cameras, including ability to fix LoCA fringing, are impressive
However, the article seems to apply only to ACR 7 (which I presume is exclusive to CS6) and LR 4. My question was really about ACR 6.7.0.339 in CS5, which installed via Adobe Updates, during the past week. On my system, this update appears to have removed the manual fringe removal tools in the Lens Correction palette.
There is nothing about this in the release notes, so has something gone wrong here?
However I have discovered that my lens is now supported, and that applying the (semi) automatic adjustments via the Lens Profile tab does a reasonable job of fixing chromatic aberrations (as well as geometrical aberrations) and is a lot quicker to use. However the manual tool should still be there to fix problems with unsupported lenses as well as a means of applying finer adjustments, perhaps to selected parts of an image, or to accomodate variations in manufactured lens quality.

  • Red eye removal tool not only for RED eyes

    Hello,
I posted this already one or two years ago:
As wildlife photographers we encounter the "red eye problem" in different ways:
Some birds or mammals have a blue reflection or even a green reflection - or other colors.
The redy eye removal tool won't work here. I am sure that there are some other wildlife photographers,
who have the same problem (we use sometimes flash to get rid of shadows in harsh daylight or to
get more brilliant colors in dull light).
Solution: Don't reduce the tool to red eyes, but let us select the color, which should be removed!
    Thanks for hearing us!

(from Germany - please excuse be english)

Yes, it should be there under the same icon as the Healing brush

  • Spot remover tool / healing brush. How do I get the brush to show up and work??

It seems I can only get the spot remover tool to work on certain photos and in certain areas of said photos . On the one picture I really need this for--where the problem started--I had used it once without much success (it was working then, but I didn't do it right). So I left the picture and worked on another. When I came back to the first picture, I brought up an earlier version of it, before the initial spot removal, to work on. Now I can't get the brush to even show up on the frame, although other tools are working fine. I've checked on other pictures and it seems that many times the spot remover brush won't show up. WhY???

Great. There are other keyboard shortcuts when using this tool like the forward slash key and holding down shift if cloning an area that is a straight line. And don’t forget you can click on the word reset. Take a look at this short video tutorial from Adobe TV.

  • I can not get my spot removal tool to work at all!!

I have tried numerous times to get my spot removal tool to work; without success.   I have read tons about it and nothing works.  What is going on?? Neither clone nor heal does anything!
I am very frustrated with Lightroom 3!

    Two things to check.

  • Red Eye removal tool bug

    Hi everybody,
I have a big problem using the red eye removal tool:
When trying to select the area around the eye to correct, LR randomly creates a selection rectangle of a different size and at a different location.
Does anyone have the same problem?
    Example:
+ I activate the red eye removal tool
+ I drag the cursor to create a selection around the red eye to correct, taking care to have the center of the rectangle more or less in the red area of the eye
    + Release the mouse button
+ the selection rectangle disappears for a split second and appears again at a different location, for example around the eye brow or somewhere under the eye in a 20-30 times smaller size than what I selected.
Is this a failed attempt of artificial intelligence to properly recognize the area to correct or simply a bug?
BTW. the file in question is a JPG, with 2 people, red eye correction worked fine on 3 of the eyes (selection rectangle stayed where I created it) and fails on every attempt on the fourth (LR restarted and so on).

The red eye tool works by selecting the whole eye not just the pupil. If it still does not work try lightening or darkening the image to gaiain some more colour. If that does not work you can clone form one of the eyes that has worked.
    Hope this helps you out.........
