Scratches on back

This is my first iPod and is clearly a very gorgeous piece of kit. I love it. However, I do think the fact that the (lovely) chrome back is so susceptible to scratching is a design flaw. I mean, clearly the thing to do is to buy a case at the same time and put it oh so carefully into it as soon as possible but that ought to be made clear to potential buyers. Also, what is the point of designing a portable gadget like this which is pretty much unusable out of the box unless you are prepared to let it get badly scratched? It ought to come with some sort of basic protective sleeve or something in the box. Also, with a clear warning on the packaging that handling this item at all in its 'naked' state may damage it's appearance irrevocably.. I know I'm not the first person to bemoan this design feature and I'd be interested to hear what other people think.
The reason for this mini-rant? I bought mine the other day, took it out of the box and carefully laid it down on a piece of paper on my desk (I am very careful with and very fussy about items like this). Then I moved it to a wooden shelf. When I picked it up, unaware of the afore-mentioned fragility, it brushed very slightly against the wood and when I looked at the back it had suddenly acquired a series of little scratches. Superficial and small barring a couple of slightly longer ones but enough to really annoy me, given I usually take great care not to scratch pieces of expensive kit. Grrr..
So I am currently awaiting the availability of a proper case, which will take a couple of weeks. Meanwhile I'm almost afraid to use it in case I scratch it more (I have a couple of rings on my hands e.g.) and I am keeping it in a soft camera case wrapped in a cloth. I know there are plenty of cases out there but any recommendations for something that might be available in Ireland?
Also, does anyone know of any way to remove the scratches without doing further damage? They're really only on the surface of the metal. Any sort of polish or other product/method that might help? Thanks.

I've come across people using Brasso and similar products but I can only imagine that would make it worse. Has anyone tried anything like that?
I suppose a certain amount of scratching is inevitable but a coating on the rear as foxcub 6 suggests or a very thin laminate or something, would be a very good improvement. I own several other pieces of kit, mp3 players, a psp and so on, that I have had for years now and they all look in great condition and I don't have to keep them permanently housed in cases, though they're all stored in them when not in use. With this baby, less than 1 hour out of the box and absolutely minimal handling and there's visible damage. C'mon Apple..
In terms of cases, my preference would be to have a protective case to keep it in but to be able to take it out and use it and admire its sleek curves in 'safe' conditions, rather than have it permanently hidden in a cover. I was looking at the Griffin leather one for example. Any other recommendations along these lines? Thanks again to all who have responded.

hi, I've got itunes music card for my birthday and when I scratched the back to redeem the code everything gone, so no code, what can I do? I've been to tesco to customer service and they told to contact itunes support

These are user-to-user forums. If the page that you posted from doesn't help then you can try contacting iTunes Support via this page (you will probably need to give them images of the front and back of the card, and possibly its receipt) : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then iTunes Cards And Codes

  • Can you easily scratch the back of the iPad mini with your fingernails?

I have a iPad mini with retina display and I'm worried that my fingernails might scratch the back.

It is probably possible but I would think unlikely. The back is made of aluminum which could get scratched but I don't think your nails could do it. Neither my iPad nor my wife's iPad have ever gotten scratched from our use.

Contact the iTunes Store by going to - http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/.  At the bottom left, you will see a "contact support" link.  Just select it, then select "iTunes Store", then "iTunes Cards and Codes".  Follow the on screen instructions.

  • Scratched the Backing of my MBP.

I have badly scratched the backing of my Macbook Pro. Since the part is user-removable, I was hoping I could find one online to buy. Unfortunately my searches have yielded zero results. Is there anyone on here who could help me in some way find a back for a Macbook Pro (late 2008)?

You can buy them online, but they are kind of pricy.

  • AppleCare Scratched the back of my iPod!

When I sent my iPod Video 60GB to AppleCare because the HDD wasn't working, they scratched the back (metal side) when they were fixing it. I don't think that I should have a scratched up iPod from Apple, because I took every precaution so that I wouldn't scratch it. I went to an Apple Store and the guys there said to call AppleCare and they will do something about it, but I'm wondering what you guys think. Images:

Sorry about the quality, all I have is a camera phone. Make sure you look at the last 6 because they show the scratches the best.

Can't they scratched the metal! Plus, I paid my $60 for the 2 year warranty so that when it broke they would fix it. After they get it working, they scratch up the whole back. Thats completely unacceptable for a repair. I just realized I didn't block out the serial # Oh well.

  • Nokia N97 cover defect: Scratched the back camera ...

    Hello everyone,
Last weekend, as I opened the back camera lens cover, I saw one straight line scratch
I was cursing myself, even though I keep my phone in a pouch. But today as I was scrolling through HOFO, I came accross a thread where people we complaining about similiar issues.
I think this is a defective design problem on N97s, if there are some dust particles under the screen then they will scratch the screen when you slide the cover to open or close it.
Will nokia take resposiblility to fix these screens, I am really **bleep** off. I have been a Nokia fan from last 7 years.
This is what we get after spending $650 USD to buy a hyped flagship device.
Could anyone tell me who to complain and how get it fixed.

well aftear reading the hofo i just smacked a screen protector in the lens, i got it from the "home button" of some iphone's screen protectors I had. as soon as I slided the cover close/open the lens (or the screen protector) got scratched so Im 100% sure that the sliding cover will scratch the lens. Not that fast, since the screen protector adds some bulk on the surface. So if you are going to do this make sure that the screen protector doesnt invade the flash zone or you will get some flashes over the picture and also make sure that it doesnt get under the lens frame I think the cover has a slider under the frame.
So finally I feel better, and the picture quality doesnt change anything even when using the flash!

  • Removing scratches from Back of Nano?

Ok so I have discovered a way to polish the front of my scuffed Nano in this forum (Displex). Now does anyone have any bright ideas as to what might get rid of some of the scratches from the polished metal back of the Nano without damaging the engravings that are there?

  • Uhm, I had the Ipod 5th generation for a week, and I accidently scratched the back on the apple logo, and near the bottom. I was wondering if I could possibly get the back fixed, or....?

My Ipod 5th generation, which I bought a week ago, I noticed I had a scratch on the back logo and one on the bottom and I never remembered ever scratching it. Is there any possible way where it could be fixed?

  • Ipod touch got scratch on back

my ipod touch hs got scratch on its back nd its annoying me very much nd i awnt to know what should i do now to remove scratches ???

You can try a metal polish but it is very hard to match the original and it may look worse.  Just get a case tocover the back and and protect it from further scratches.

  • Scratches on iphone 5c back, can apple store replace it?

My new 5c has deep scratch on back of it, can this be replaced at all? thanks in advance

    How did scratches happen ?
In the box ? Apple will replace it. Call Apple Care or go to an Apple Store.
You did it ? It is not a good reason to change it if you don't have an Apple Care+ account.

  • Can I return my iphone 5 if I am not happy at how easily it scratches?

I have only had my iphone 5 for a couple of weeks and I have already noticed scuffs and ***** out of the side and back. I protect my phone with a cover but (And I kid you not) if the little grains of dirt that still somehow get underneath, are scratching the back. This combined with the fact that most apps and movies do not make use of the full siz of the phone, has made me very unhappy. I REALLY want to return my iphone, even if its just to have it replaced. Is this possible? Surely under the warranty I am within my rights to expect a certain level of quality!?

You have several things going on here. If you bought the iPhone from Apple here is a link to Apple's return policy in the US, I have no idea where you are so this policy may be different if your not in the US. http://store.apple.com/us/help/returns_refund
If you bought the iPhone from an authorized dealer check their return policy to see if it applies to your couple of weeks of ownership in order to see if it qualifies.
The warranty applies to manufacture defects, it is not insurance. Read here for more information about the iPhone warranty http://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/iphone.pdf
Lastly, most apps haven't been update to fit the bigger screen on the iPhone 5. This will take some time, at least the apps still work. Hope that helps.

  • Reassigned scratch disk--now, PS won't open!!!

I have a Power Mac G4 (AGP) with two hard drives running Tiger. I installed CS4 and everything was fine until I started fiddling around in Photoshop and changed the scratch disk from disk 1 (10G start disk) to disk 2 (80G). All my applications are installed on disk 2 because it has more space. Now, I am unable to open Photoshop. Message reads, "Could not open a scratch file because the disk is not available."
I uninstalled and re-installed PS, but got the same message. I moved PS to disk 1, but same message persists and I am unable to open PS. If somehow I could open the program, I could change the scratch disk back to its original position. Can someone please help? Thank you for any assistance.
    blooskeye

You will need to trash Photoshop's Prefs. because your current ones are designating a Scratch Disk that is no longer available.
Hold down Cmd Option Shift while launching Photoshp; and chose to "Delete Settings" when asked.
Once Photoshop has launched, reset your Prefs including the ones concerning the Scratch Disk.
    >I moved PS to disk 1
That unfortunately was a major error.
You need to leave CS4 applications where they are installed by default.
You will now need to use the UN-Installer to uninstall CS4 and then re-install it from your DVD.
