Scratchy noise at mid to upper volumes

I have a ASUS P6T motherboard with built in 5.1 surround sound and recently when I turn the volume up to a normal level I get this scratching sound. The speaker system is a THX Megaworks 550, Model: MMS4650. I've been out of electronics for quite a few years so I don't have an O'scope anymore so I'm having a hard time trying to figure out where my problem is originating from. I've plugged in a headset and with it the sound was absolutely fine. This leads me to believe the amp on the THX has a bad cap somewhere. They all look good which is totally inconclusive, but I was hoping something might be obvious..not! Anyway without a scope I can't be sure if the problem is originating in the final outputs on the MOBO or in the finals in the THX amp. Also BTW it is not burnt speaker coils, I checked that right away.
If anybody has some suggestions on narrowing down where the probem might be I'ld really appreciate any tips.
Other than that I'ld like to try to just buy the amp board that goes in the sub-woofer or the sub-woofer itself. I've written creative a couple of times on this but I'm not getting any help whatsoever! A schematic would be a big help too if anybody knows where to get one for this.
Any help, any tips would be greatly appreciated! I just can't see having to buy a whole set of speakers because of a 5 dollar part!!!
TIA,
John W.

This is a problem I started experiencing with my MacBook after about 1 year. The problem is most likely to occur when the machine is warm or hot (SMC fan control reports 60+ degrees celsius). The problem is related to the sound "card"/speakers, and it definitely is related to video playback. The interesting thing is that the noise does not occur with headphones plugged in and resumes when unplugged. I finally got fed up and took a screwdriver to my machine. The noise you describe is being emitted from the left speaker. I get the impression that the video codec must change the state of a sound "card" / chipset that causes the audio to misbehave. SMC fan control can be used to increase the fan speed on your machine as that does alleviate the problem, it also increases fan noise. :-/
I am disappointed to hear you are experiencing the same problem on a new machine. I was hoping to eliminate this nuisance with my next upgrade.

  • The upper volume button on my iPhone 4s is not working

I had a case on it that pressed against my volume buttons. When I took the case off, the upper volume button stopped working. The lower volume works just fine. Whenever I push the upper volume, nothing happens. The volume works both ways if I touch the on screen volume on my music screen. My headphone volume works fine too. But when I have to talk on the phone without headphones, I can't turn the volume up and it's hard to hear my caller.

  • My 128gig ipad air is crackling at mid to high volume

Just got the air on Friday at 8am. Watched three episodes of TV on it, ready to return it! The speaker is crackling horribly at mid to high volume levels.  Any ideas?  Never had a problem with my other 3 iPads.  I'm really dismayed. If yours has this, let me know, or suggestions.  It actually feels like the crackling is palpable while holding the thing.

It would be helpful if you were to identify the model of MBP you have.
The noise makers on a MBP are the fan(s), the HDD and the optical drive.  Can you locate the exact position where the noise is coming from?
    Ciao.

  • Ipod Touch 5 slightly loose home button and one slightly slanted Upper volume key?

It's up to you at the end of the day bud.
Sounds to me like it's still working well for you but you are the consumer and you have paid for this product so its your call to make.

  • Scratchy noise from video?

I just opened up a fresh macbook (the shiny new aluminum one) and I'm sorely disappointed. I installed World of Warcraft and found that when it loads (and plays) a wretched, scratching sound is heard near the left hand side of the unit.
    Odd.
So I messed with the video settings, messed with brightness, messed with being on power and off. All result with the same scratchy noise. Then I close warcraft and download a spore trial.
The exact same thing can be heard! Great, so I isolate the problem to the video - probably something to do with 3D.
Well... I was scrolling through the apple forums here and thought I heard the same noise. Lo and behold, when I scroll on the trackpad quickly up and down the same thing happens, though the scratch is faint. This is ridiculous.
Are there any solutions to this that don't require me trying to sign up with a genius bar appointment? I'm totally not happy and I hate having to talk my way into an appointment at those places.

  • IPAD MINI UPPER VOLUME BUTTON STUCK..HELP??!

My iPad mini (it has a Smart Cover on,front only)  fell from a dressing table onto very soft carpet, however the upper volume key has stopped working, supposedly jammed? But there isn't the volume icon on the screen. I don't have warranty on it, so if I take it into the store what will they do and how much will it cost?
    Thankyou x

    Hey Oliviamarylou,
Thanks for the question. The following resource provides basic information on iPad repairs. However, in all honesty you may want to take the device into the store to have the issue diagnosed.

  • What MIDI value for Volume leaves the slider uneffected

I realize that the MIDI value of Pan = 64 leaves the pan pot centered.
What MIDI value for volume will likewise, leave the volume slider unaltered?

    Thank you so much.

  • Scratchy Noises..Help!

I notice that my ipod (32GB 3rd Gen) started making these scratchy noises through my headphones. I bought another pair because I thought it was the headphones, but I tried other headphones and it did the samething. Anyone having this problem or can someone help me? Because I really don't want to buy another one.
Can someone please help me here?

Try the standard fixes to rule out software problem.
    - Reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod
If you still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem, likely a bad headphone jack.

  • Scratchy noise coming from air

It started just a couple days ago , when i heard a scratchy noise coming from the left corner. It stopped and now it just sounds like a fan is constantly going. Any ideas?

sending an audio file would be a nice option on this forum :-)
I suggest you stop using it to limit the damage and take it to the Apple Store for check up.
Seem like a fan issue and we cannot do much about it here.

  • Phantom Noise During MIDI Events

    Hiya,
I've searched a bit, but haven't found much. I apologize if this has been covered. (Obligatory disclaimer complete!)
Starting earlier this week, I noticed a noise would accompany any MIDI notes I'd play on my keyboard through Logic. Frustrating. I'm having some difficulty describing the noise, but I'll try. First, it has a distinct tone, which is the same tone as the note being keyed. Beyond that it's faint, full of static and has a bit of a phasing effect.
My troubleshooting so far: (restarting, shutting off and on, unplugging and plugging included!)
    1) Removed my usb keyboard from the computer, and played MIDI notes through the caps lock keyboard. Issue persists.
    2) Used the pencil tool to create MIDI events. Issue persists on playback.
    3) Deleted the Logic plist. Issue persists.
    4) Tested similarly in GarageBand. Issue persists.
It should be mentioned that I'm not having any other audio issues.
I'm currently reinstalling Logic, but I can't imagine that's going to change much considering the issue is cross application. (I will test older projects sequenced in the Before Time to see if those events phase as well as soon as Logic is done reinstalling.) I'm sure it's a simple solution that I am not familiar with. No doubt I'll kick myself when someone figures it out!
    Thanks in advance!

It sounds like you might just be hearing electronic interference noise due to the fact that you're using the internal sound of the Mac. In the old days (up to around the time of the G5s), the built in sound on Macs was fairly decent quality, at least in terms of the way it was isolated to reject interference from the electronics running inside the box. More recent models don't seem to be quite as good in this regard,
This is what I thought when first reading this post last night. I have an old Fender guitar amp from the 50's that has the same sound. The same note, played low in the background with a quieter layer of distortion. (static).
It will show up most on tones that are closer to a pure sine wave, like some of the Rhodes/El.Piano sounds. You might not notice it on more complex tones. Also will show up more playing quietly.
What do you have set as the Mac's input device, is it set to Line input, if so try unplugging anything going into the input, just to see if there's some interference.
Also, what are you monitoring the sound through?

  • No Sound, Tried the Midi Settings, checking volume, nothing works

    Hi,
I have checked the forums, and have tried all of the fixes that work for everyone else. My computer was put out pre-garage band, so it is not on this machine. I am using a Digidesign 002 for my sound, and it works with pro-tools, and I-Tunes, but not with internet. I make sure everything is set right, and that the digidesign sound manager is connected, but still nothing. I made sure 44.1 was set in my midi settings. Oddly, it only gives me "built in audio" as the option for system output. I have the 002 set for the default output.
    Thanks!

Check the DigiDesign Site for updates that match your OS and installed version of QuickTime.
