Scratchy noise from video?

I just opened up a fresh macbook (the shiny new aluminum one) and I'm sorely disappointed. I installed World of Warcraft and found that when it loads (and plays) a wretched, scratching sound is heard near the left hand side of the unit.
Odd.
So I messed with the video settings, messed with brightness, messed with being on power and off. All result with the same scratchy noise. Then I close warcraft and download a spore trial.
The exact same thing can be heard! Great, so I isolate the problem to the video - probably something to do with 3D.
Well... I was scrolling through the apple forums here and thought I heard the same noise. Lo and behold, when I scroll on the trackpad quickly up and down the same thing happens, though the scratch is faint. This is ridiculous.
Are there any solutions to this that don't require me trying to sign up with a genius bar appointment? I'm totally not happy and I hate having to talk my way into an appointment at those places.

This is a problem I started experiencing with my MacBook after about 1 year. The problem is most likely to occur when the machine is warm or hot (SMC fan control reports 60+ degrees celsius). The problem is related to the sound "card"/speakers, and it definitely is related to video playback. The interesting thing is that the noise does not occur with headphones plugged in and resumes when unplugged. I finally got fed up and took a screwdriver to my machine. The noise you describe is being emitted from the left speaker. I get the impression that the video codec must change the state of a sound "card" / chipset that causes the audio to misbehave. SMC fan control can be used to increase the fan speed on your machine as that does alleviate the problem, it also increases fan noise. :-/
I am disappointed to hear you are experiencing the same problem on a new machine. I was hoping to eliminate this nuisance with my next upgrade.

  • Remove Noise from Video Breaks Sync

I recently removed some audio noise from a video and the audio lost the sync with the video. Any ideas on what might cause this, and how to avoid it?
I have 8 files I need to clean up, and obviously not breaking them would be best.
    Thanks!

    Hi Wes,
Can you describe what happens a bit more? Is the audio late or early? By how much? Does it get worse over time? Does it appear out of sync within Soundbooth or only after you export it?
    Thanks,

  • Removing 12db noise from video clips

Was wondering if anyone had a work flow for getting out 12db gain noise out of some video clips. Someone set camera to 12db gain and clips look a little snowy.
    Thanks

Howard, you're getting tired. Toms is talking about video not audio. :)

It would be helpful if you were to identify the model of MBP you have.
The noise makers on a MBP are the fan(s), the HDD and the optical drive.  Can you locate the exact position where the noise is coming from?
    Ciao.

  • Removing microphone crackle noise from a video

    Hi there,
Please could anyone offer some advice on how to remove a "crackly" noise from my video?  The "crackle" appears to have come from the microphone that was clipped to a shirt, and as the speaker moved, the microphone picked up and recorded the scraping noise!
I have had a go with the audio effects in Premiere Elements, but haven't had any luck removing the noise, unless the sound gets distorted.  I am new to Premiere Elements but have a gut feeling that I will probably need to re-record the speaker again.  I thought I would ask the question, just in case there was some method I haven't found / understand yet.
    Thank you

From within PrE, I think that you have gotten good advice. The ability to remove transients from Audio is a bit limited in a video-editor, and can take a lot of experimenting.
There is something a bit better, but requires additional programs to accomplish. Even then, experimenting and critical listening will be needed. The first is an inexpensive, but great audio program, Magix Audio Cleaning Lab. With just the default settings, it does an amazingly good job with such things, though might never be perfect. I then use Adobe Audition, which has a Transient Repair Tool, and must be applied by hand, for each Transient that remains. It is NOT inexpensive, but so very powerful. This ARTICLE will give you a bit more info, plus a link to the Magix program.
Also, I would check out what is inducing the crackle into the audio stream. Usually, this is because of a bad connection in the chain. Fixing things there, is the best course, for the future.
    Good luck,

  • Muting/deleting original noise/audio from video

    Hi all,
I'm new to this forum and new to Macs in general. I would like to know the following:
I have a video of a road-trip in which the noise of the car features
heavily. I've added a track to go over it but no matter what I try
the noise from the car is still there. Is there a way of tuning this out and only having music playing? Same would go with people's voices...is there a way of muting that? I know you can do a voice over, but will that dim the voices?
    Thanks in advance,
    P.S. I have iMovie 09

i am having an issue and a question. i want to mute all the audio from all clips. the only audio that should be playing is the music that i insert. i know this is a basic process. i click on the clip and select mute under edit or under the audio section move the volume bar all the way to 0.
for some reason, this most recent time i opened up imovie to resume more editing, the audio of the clips were on again. when i click the clip to mute it, it says that it is already muted and the volume bar is set at 0. what the heck is going on?
    please help.

  • Scratchy noise coming from air

It started just a couple days ago , when i heard a scratchy noise coming from the left corner. It stopped and now it just sounds like a fan is constantly going. Any ideas?

sending an audio file would be a nice option on this forum :-)
I suggest you stop using it to limit the damage and take it to the Apple Store for check up.
Seem like a fan issue and we cannot do much about it here.

  • I recently downloaded the latest OS update and now I have a constant "humming" noise from my MBP and my audio output is no longer working. Any suggestions?

I recently downloaded the lastest OS update (Lion X 10.7.4) on my MBP that I purchased in November of 2011, and since downloading it my MBP has been making a constant "humming" noise from the right speaker/disc drive area. I also don't have any audio output for FaceTime or Skype. I attempted to use Photo Booth to record a video and it doesn't record any audio. I attempted to reset SMC and reinstall Lion with no resolution of the problems.

Click the Finder icon on the Dock.
Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
    Built-in-Output
    Output tab
Move the Master volume slider to the right a bit.
    Best.

  • Bizarre High-pitched noise from K8N-NEO *I have read the other posts*

    Hello.
I just got a new system to build, but it has decided to pee in my Wheaties.
    Here are the specs:
    MSI Neo Platinum
    Nvidia 6800 video
    Athlon64 3200
    Kingston Hyperx PC3200
    Antec Tru430 - 430watt
    +5   +12    +3
    36A  26A    28A
The board, CPU, memory, and video are installed in a new Antec case.  The CPU is installed properly and I am using some ArticSilver 5 paste.
When the board posts, I hear a horribly loud and high pitched squeal.  It sounds like a smoke detector going off.
I have read a number of posts regarding loud noise from the MOSFETS or from a loose chipset heatsink or as a result of a poor power supply.  I think that this power supply should be adequate and the noise seems to be too loud to be a result of a loose component.
The board appears to go through the post procedure and stops on the "processor initialization" stage.  After about 2 seconds of being powered on the video fans stops spinning.  The HS Fan (which is the one that came with the retail package) does not appear to be spinning at full speed, neither is it running too slowly.  As a result, I have not put power to the board for more than a few seconds (fear of heat damage, though the HS never gets warm...)
I am at a loss here.  I have reseated everything several times, if this is a defective board then I am really irritated that it would pass QA and be sold.  Any suggestions that you could provide will be greatly appreciated.  If you prefer you can send me an email at [email protected]
    Thanks again!
    Moe

          Cheers !

  • Back to back scratch noises from speaker and headphone jack, very faint

I'm having a headphone/speaker issue, but it is very difficult to describe. When I use my computer, the speakers or headphones (if plugged in) will occasionally emit two quick scratchy noises back to back. The speakers and headphones work great, but I can't figure out what the noises are. They sound kinda like if you were to gently scratch the macbook pro casing with your fingernail. Any ideas as to what can cause it to happen?

it seems that m1r3k found a very good workaround, at least for the Mid 2010 Mac mini models (that I'm using right now). I don't know if it works also with more recent Mac mini models.
Re: After upgrading to lion, cant select HDMI sound setting
Open Audio MIDI Setup.app in /Applications/Utility, click the + (plus) button in the bottom left corner of the window and choose "Create Multi-Output Device". In the new device settings tick the HDMI "Use" checkbox and you're done. Simply go to the usual System Preferences Audio panel and choose the newly created device, without the need to unplug the audio cable from the back of the Mac mini. You can also name the new audio device as you want.
    NOTE:
This is only a workaround for a deliberate choice made by Apple on OS X Lion 10.7.2 and beyond:
Mac mini: About HDMI audio and headphones
Please let Apple know (here or here) how this has made things unnecessary awkward for users and needs to be fixed (these forums don't count, they are not read by Apple's employees)!

  • Lot of noise from laptop audio output

I'm getting a lot of noise from the audio output of my Macbook Pro (early 2008) OS 10.8.5 when I connect an external firewire 800 drive that uses a power cord. I get more of the same noise when I connect an external video monitor. The noise is a digital hashy and whiney sound that modulates sometimes as what on the screen changes. If I use my Focusrite Scarlett interface the noise is amplified to the point that I can't work. The noise starts when the drive's power cord is plugged in. If I work off a pocket USB drive there is no noise. This is my work around for now. I'm using a power strip that has noise filtering. I have 2 different studios and I get the same noise in both. I've done a lot of trouble shooting and have narrowed the problem down to connecting a drive with a power cord to the computer. I have tried different drives too with the same result. Is there any hope of fixing this?

Can't say I've ever had any noise when starting the unit up over optical - if your DAC is designed for stereo only then it may be causing noise by attempting to play the 5.1 startup video's audio bitstream which is dolby digital encoded not stereo.

  • Loud fan or noise from another source?

I got the HP 11 x360 laptop yesterday, brand new out of the box. I can't help but notice a kinda scratchy noise in the right side of the computer, which sounds a bit like a disc trying to load in an old dvd player.  It's a very distracting noise, and disappointing  because I'm liking most of the computer so far. What is likely the cause of this noise and how do I fix it?

  • MotionMan Code Request (from Video 7 of Programming Kinect for Windows v2 video series)

Casey Meekhof: thank you for the great presentation from Video 7 of the Programming for Kinect video series
that was published back in July. I was wonder if there was anyway that you could post the code you wrote for the MotionMan program you presented in the video.  I am a fairly novice programmer and was attempting to replicate some of the noise/background
reduction and pixel filtering but am unable to do so with any sort of sophisticated coding (mine seems to eat up much more memory with rather poor results).
I am hoping that this question reaches you as I noticed someone else ask a question in a similar manner
and you ended up responding through their thread.
    Thank you in advance.

Thanks for the reply Carmine. That is unfortunate that the code isn't available but perhaps you (or anyone else) can guide me in a right direction.  First, let me explain what I'm trying to do:
Essentially, I want to be able to detect motion from some initial frame capture for a body that is supposed to be stationary.  My current setup involves a simple button which takes in the first 10 depth frames and averages them together to create a
"mask" which will then be referenced during the motion tracking. Then, the display will show (over the color image of the mask) where motion has occurred by changing pixels to some color.
The program I have written is pretty novice and I don't believe it does buffering in the way that you describe (perhaps you can elaborate further on that for me as I'm unsure how to incorporate that). For cleaning up the image, I have simple "for"
loops that take out any 0 depth pixels and replaces them with the average of pixels around it. Additionally, I'm trying to remove any "jumpy" pixels (as described in the video) by making comparisons of that pixel location in frames before and after
it and replacing the nonsensical depth pixel with an average of the other two.
For the comparison of the mask to the live feed, I'm simply creating 5 arrays (1 for each of 5 sequential frames), averaging them, and then comparing them to the mask.  I then move the data in each array to the next one down the line and bring in the
newest frame to the array set and repeat.
These processes seem a bit rudimentary to me but I do not know a lot of advanced programming especially when it comes to the Kinect and C#.  Any advice you could give would be appreciated as my current methods are not producing accurate results.

  • 808 PureView - noise from auto-focus mechanism dur...

    Hi,
Just bought an 808 PureView, and have noticed a very audible noise from the auto-focus during video recording.
    Is this normal?
I don't want to send it back if it is a "design feature", as I'm loving everything else about it!
    Thanks!
    Solved!

Thats totally normal. I've seen on my 808 too while shooting in complete silent environment.

  • I added background music to the video clip, but I only hear noise, no video clip audio or the background music audio

I added background music to the video clip in iMovie, the playback runs ok on the right corner preview screen, if I share it to movie clip or itunes or theather, I only hear noise, no video clip audio or the music audio
If I don't put additional audio to the clip. audio effect or music background, the video plays normally
I detached the audio from the video clip and deleted it, that way it was possible to listen to the music background and see the actual video clip, but no audio from the video clip.
    How can I have both?

    Hi
    My first thought is -
Where are the original Audio file ?
If it was on an Audio-CD then the CD is Ejected and one tries to play the movie - it can not find it = Silence.
You are using an Non-Destructive Video editor - meaning that You have raw material - Video, Audio and photos but no Movie in Project - only a text document directing How You want it to be played. So if Audio is not where it was when this document were created - iMovie can not find it and e.g. audio goes silent.
    Yours thinking - Bengt W
