Scratchy sound quality

I have a 30GB iPod and it has terrible sound quality. The music sounds staticky -- or as if it's being played through blown speakers. I've played it through three different sets of headphones and two home stereos, and they all sound the same -- crackly. Here's the rub: The songs that sound scratcy on my iPod also sound scratchy when played through iTunes on my laptop. And it doesn't matter what the original source was. Some soungs I've downloaded sound like this, as do songs I've burned from CDs.
Not sure if this is related, but the sound is also fairly muffled. When I play it through my home stereo (which is fairly high-end) I have to crank up the mid-range on the EQ to hear vocals clearly.
What the ...?
30

Wow! The EQ really *****, doesn't it? Turning it off made a huge difference. The sound was so bad beforehand that it wasn't even listenable.
The crackling sound is now gone. The mid-range is still kind of dull, but at least it's all clean now.
Thanks.

Now that I have the ipod, ALL of my video files' sound is corrupted. It is very scratchy and full of static, but only when played on my computer. The sound quality on my ipod is flawless. Anyone have any ideas?

  • Poor sound quality on airtunes and airport express

I recently configured a new Airport Extreme base station and two airport expresses. I used the airport expresses to extend my network but the sound quality is very poor when I run itunes no my stero. can anyone tell me why and how to fix it. The sound is very scratchy and there is no volume.

    Dear All,
I'd like to follow up because I think that the answer to why I am getting poor sound quality my be in how I set up my wireless network. I'd like to get some feedback about this and some help about how to correct it.
My wireless network has three components.
    1. "Base Station" which is a new Airport Extreme.
    2. Unit "Number 1" which is an Airport Express located in my living room and connected to my stereo. it is 30 feet away from the "Base Station."
    3. Unit "Number 2", also an Airport Express that is upstairs in a bedroom and connected to a ruby imac. via its ethernet port.
Wireless strength is excellent in all locations and all other services are working well from a laptop, the ruby mac or the imac. My problem only seems readily apparent when playing itunes through the stereo's speakers.
My wireless system is configured as follows:
Base Station: Wireless mode is set to participate in wireless network and to allow this network to be extended. The WDS mode is main and is set to allow wireless clients. The two airport expresses are identified by ID number as remotes.
Unit 1 and 2 are configured as WDS remotes and to allow wireless clients and identify the base station as WDS main.

  • Poor sound quality, Airport Express

    Hi,
I have this 2 yrs old airport express but it has all of the sudden a really poor sound quality.
When I connect it to my home stereo and play through airplay and if I connect headphones the sound is very poor and scratchy
I've used 3 diffferent cables to connect it to my home stereo and i've tried 2 different set of headphnoes.
When i connect directly to my home stereo with RCA cable the sound is fine.
Is the only solution to buy a new airport?
    Thank you.

Based on your description, it appears that the base station's internal DAC is the issue and may be failing. Unfortunately these are not user replaceable parts and a complete base station replacement may be the only option at this point in time.
One other option to try, if your stereo supports digital optical input, is to use a mini-jack Toslink cable connected between the base station's audio port and the stereo to see if you can get "clean" sound this way.

  • Scratchy sound in iTunes! (No problems in Quicktime) - frustrating!

    Hello everybody,
When playing audio in iTunes 10 the sound is scratchy. If a song starts out very quietly, eg. with only an acoustic guitar, there is a very noticeable scratchy sound almost every time a note is played. This is extremely frustrating when listening to any kind of music.
I'm on a brand new MacBook Pro, everything is up to date. I also had these sound scratch issues with my old MacBook, so I was hoping they'd be gone on my brand new MacBook... Guess not.
Anyway, I tried EVERYTHING to locate the problem. Here's what I discovered yesterday:
-I imported a brand new CD into iTunes
-Then, when I played the imported files in iTunes, the scratchy sound was there. Frustrating.
    Here's what I don't understand:
When playing back the very same files using QuickTime, or even using Quick Look in the Finder, there's NO scratchy sound. The output level is a bit lower, that's all - but no scratchy sounds whatsoever. The files sound perfect and awesome in QuickTime and Quick Look.
So, what should I do now?
Using QuickTime to play all my music seems pretty rediculous, to say the least. The whole point of iTunes is to organize and play your music. So this bothers me quite a bit.
It seems to me that this is an iTunes issue.
Hope to hear from some of you.
    Best,
    balloonhorsens

    Hi guys,
Just stumbled across this post on Google and I just want to say that I am experiencing the same problem and I have the equalizer turned off! I am running my iMac with a USB sound card to my amp and into B&W floorstanding speakers which all work VERY well.
Similar to the guy above my songs are playing very well with QuickTime - not a problem at all, but with iTunes 10 something isn't quite right. Basically when a song gets slightly bassier it tends to sound scratchy - e.g. A hard strum of a guitar. I know this isn't right and I am certain it is an issue with iTunes - the equalizer is turned off but sound check is on (with sound check off it sounds worse).
What I struggle to understand is that all of my songs have been sync'd to my iPhone 4 and those songs which sounded scratchy on iTunes on my iMac sound fine on he phone - even when I go out of the headphone jack of my phone straight to my amp!!
Please, please can somebody resolve this issue - I love high quality sound and if the iMac insists that I play and organize a bulk of my music with iTunes then it needs to sound right because at he moment the likes of John Mayer are sounding rough!
One of the main songs we could use as an example would be a song by Mumford and Sons called "After the Storm".
Thank you in advance to anybody with any advice.
    Luke

  • Lousy sound quality from my Dynex 24" HDTV

I am thinking about taking this TV back because the sound quality of the\is TV is so scratchy!!  I've tried hooking up my computer speakers to the TV but the receptacle is the wrong size.  Are there converter plugs to accommodate these wires so I can use an inexpensive set of computer speakers to enhance the sound?

Unfortunately fb41445 you will have this issue with nearly any HDTV, but with some added surround sound this will be a problem of the past.

  • E52 constantly hangs + sound quality

    1.
After using my E52 for 2-3 months with no particular problems besides miserable sound quality, I did the latest software upgrade (022.009.221.01) and after that, the phone constantly hangs. I have been unable to find a pattern causing the problem, the phone is simply just hanging when I take it out of my pocket and want to use it. Sometimes the LCD is all lit (every pixels ON) so it almost appears like a flashlight (no graphics shown, all white LCD). I then have to remove battery, reinsert and re-boot.
I have a feeling it could be the power saving feature causing it, the phone is also intolerable long to wake up after going into power save mode.
    2.
Secondly the sound during conversation is beyond standard in 2009. The ear speaker has a scratchy sound and talking with speaker ON is almost impossible as people in the other end of conversation report that they can hardly understand as sound is "pixelated"and leve sounds as if goes up and down.
    regards
    Carsten

    Hi,
I regret to tell you that this is an issue with most E52 series. Try to turn the accelometer off or do a factory reset.
In the end I have to tell you that Nokia seems like to be much busier than to care about its customers complaints.
Nokia just makes phone, doesn't care much about what comes after!

  • IPhone 5s Call Sound Quality

Hey- I have a brand new iPhone 5s with AT&T and I've noticed that the call sound quality is worse than my old iPhone 4. The call sound is more muffled and a lot less crisp. Is this a common issue or is it just my phone? Thank you!

When I hold my iPhone 5S in my left hand to my left ear the sound is muffled. I remember Steve Jobs saying you're holding it wrong. Although this had nothing to do with the problem we're having now it got me to thinking. I looked at my hand holding the iPhone my thumb was on the left edge with my to two Center fingers on the right edge. My index finger was up close to the noise canceling mic on the back of the phone and my palm was down by the regular mic.  I could see as I talked the voice could hit my palm travel up my hand to my index finger which was close to the microphone on the back.
I called my wife on the house phone using my iPhone 5S. She said that my voice was muffled. I took my index finger away from the microphone and moved it next to my two Center fingers on the right side of the phone. This moved my palm away from the microphone at the bottom. I did this while she stayed on the line. She said that now she could hear me clearly. I then moved my index finger to completely cover the back microphone. Once again she said that the sound was still good. I then moved my index finger a small amount away from the microphone and she said that my voice was muffled again.
I believe that the way I was holding my hand acted as a megaphone to the noise canceling microphone in the back. The noise canceling microphone thought my voice was noise and was suppressing it.
I work in a noisy environment, so I like the idea of the noise canceling microphone. Going to the settings and turning off the noise canceling microphone or putting a small piece of tape over the microphone is really not a good option for me.
For now I will use this new way of holding the phone until Apple can fix this issue.

  • Poor sound quality in timeline and export; fine in Source?

    Hello all.
Newbie to Pr but experienced pro in digital audio. I'm stumped and know I'm just missing something somewhere.
I've made a music video for one of my songs. The graphics are all done (in AE), imported to Pr and eveything looks great. I import the final mix of the audio and it sounds very low quality when played from the timeline and in the final output, regardless of format (I've tried several presets and custom settings as well). I played around and noticed that the audio sounds fine when played from the Source window inside Premier.
The Pr session is comrised of 18 video tracks (not all playing at once, of course) and one stereo audio track.
I've tried re-exporting the audio from Logic at different bit depths, sample rates and file formats (mp3, wav, AAC, etc) but the results are the same every time: Source (Pr)sounds fine, Logic output sounds fine, rendered / timeline playback sounds like very low quality mp3 and final product sounds just as bad.
I've tried everything I can think of. I hope one of you can show me what I'm missing.
    TIA!

    Thank you for the reply!
I was experiencing the same results no matter what export settings I used. Plus the poor sound quality was present in the timeline itself, without even exporting the project.
I finally threw my hands up, started a completely new project, drug the same audio file in... sounded fine. Copied / Pasted the video clips from the original, broken project and boom, eveything is fixed. Yeah, corrupted Pr file it turns out. All I had to do was start a new project and import all the old components.
I've had to do this in Logic a lot (increasingly, these days). I just wish I'd tried it 10 hours earlier! Ha.
Anyway, problem solved, and thanks very much!

  • Poor sound quality on podcasts after upgrading to leopard

I upgraded my Powerbook G4 to Leopard yesterday. Currently, my podcasts from Bloomberg on the Econonmy are almost uninteligible as they skipp words, have static etc. Before the update, everything worked fine. Is this a compresssion issue? What can I do to improve sound quality? Please feel free to respond directly to [email protected] thanks

Sorry to here about your problems since upgrading to Leopard, Charles.
I don't know whether there's a cause/effect relationship of one and the other going on there but you've posted on the iTunes for Windows side of these boards and although for the most part we're a pretty nice bunch of people here - if I do say so myself - generally speaking you'll be better off if you post your question over on the iTunes for Mac side.
    Good Luck.

  • Scratchy Sound When Sliding Through Covers in Cover Flow View in iTunes 8

Anyone having problems with a scratchy sound as you slide through covers in the cover flow view in iTunes 8?
Also sliding too fast has caused app to crash.

The scratchy sound seems to have come up a few times with iTunes 8 (including in a couple of other threads that I can't find right now). It seems to have picked up around the last QT update, which was coincident with the iTunes upgrade.
    (post updated)
I must admit, I didn't read closely at 7:30 in the morning, and didn't see this was just happening to OP with cover flow.
But there have been a number of people (including me) complaining of general scratchiness in iTunes 8 and AirTunes that seems traceable to the last QT update. Be glad you aren't in my situation, where it's ALWAYS scratchy.

  • Why is the sound quality and volume in itunes so different than when I use other media players

This is an issue which has been vexing me for some time. I've researched it all over the web and have not found a worthwhile answer. Some other posts on these forums have asked similar questions without successful answers. But, none the less, I will try...
I have spent a lot of time over the last two years trying to get my itunes library organized as well as getting good digitized versions from my vinyl records as well as CDs. I was pleased with my results and then I added the songs to itunes. I could not believe how inconsistent the sound quality was. Invariably the volume is always lower. [Please do not post a reply such as: Check the volume controls in itunes proper as well as in itunes preferences (i.e., Sound Check, Sound Enhancer) & the Volume Adjustment in the Information pane under Options for particular songs.] I tried all of those means of adjusting volume. They do NOT work.
There is something more insidious at work in itunes which prevent good sound reproduction. I will give an example. I have played Frankie Valle and the Four Season's song "C'Mon Marianne" on the OS X system sound (i.e. clicking the play button to the song file when selected on the desktop or wherever it resides) as well as in Amadeus Pro. The song sounds great. When I play it when it's in the itunes' library the first part of the song is too lound and then when Frankie Valle starts singing his voice is at a significantly reduced volume.
I have edited the foregoing song in Amadeus Pro to a very high volume (i.e., Effects>Amplify), reloaded it into itunes and it still does not inprove the volume of Frankie's voice in the song, even though the rest of the song is somewhat louder. I have played with the Equalizer in itunes to no effect. It just does not work.
Now, I would glading move away from itunes and use another media player. However, I have other Apple devices through which I listen to music. And the only way I know of to listen,e.g., on the iphone is through itunes.
The other related problem with itune, or should I say iCloud, is icloud match. The icloud Match has taken great sounding music and given me back music of an inferior quality, even though it is a Matched AAC format.
I'm am sorry if I am a little peeved about this issue. If anyone has some suggestions or input to a solution, I will be eternally grateful. Thanks a bunch.

    fbuerg,
You are welcome. Glad my good fortune was helpful to you.

The batterys the ipods come with are very sensetive somtimes they dont react right to the first couple of charges. Try fully charging it and then leaving it on until its completely drained a few times. If that doesnt work it might be a lemon.

  • Has Apple addressed poor sound quality issues with new 160GB iPod classic?

I just bought a new 160GB iPod classic, replacing a perfectly good 80GB iPod Video (5.5), thinking that the newer one would be superior to my 3 year old model. I discovered that the sound of the new unit was flat and muddy compared to the older model. I found that the 5th gen iPod video was more "spacial", if that's an appropriate word to use; the bass was more present and more clearly defined, as was the rest of the sonic spectrum. I searched several forums to research this issue and while there were numerous references to this issue, all of the posts I found referred to the original iPod classics (80GB and 160GB) and not the later 120GB classics nor the new 160GB classics like the one I bought. Has Apple done anything to address this issue since the first classics were released or are the new ones still suffering from the same sound quality issues as the original classics?

Based on your observations here, they apparently have not changed the sound quality since the original 160GB classic. I noticed a clear narrowing of the sound stage (ambiance) between the 5.5G 80Gb and my 6G 160GB. You're describing the same characteristic. I don't own the newest 160GB version and came here today to see if it might have improved the sound quality back to the 5.5 spaciousness. Note that the 5.5G has a higher signal to noise ratio than the 6G, making it difficult for me to enjoy it through efficient balanced armature in ear monitors like the Shure SE530s or Ulimate Ears Triple.Fi 10s.
