Screen artifacts - Hardware or software?

Hello all, my name is Larry and I'm having a problem with my VGA I hope the forum can help me diagnose. My PC hardware is listed in my sig, but the short form is that I've built a new PC with a 460GTX 1GD5/OC video card driving 2 Samsung 1920x1080 screens. Within 10 hours of building the new PC, I started to get this all the time:
FAILURE 1:
I RMA'd the board and installed the new one. I don't get the first failure anymore, but now I intermittently get this:
FAILURE 2:
Most often when I get this new failure, it will appear for a few seconds and then both screens will blank and the screens will reappear correctly. Occassionally, I have to reboot to clear the problem.
I'm not so sure the new failure is hardware. What does the forum think? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. My new, uber-PC is not making me very happy!

software no way, only if OC by software/BIOS is involved.

  • Windows xp pro stalls - blank screen- hardware or software problem?

    Hi Guys,
My system is about one month old and has been awesome in performance and graphics.
Suddenly it (windows xp pro) stalls after flashing the windows loading screen and it goes blank. Looks like a software problem?
I am posting on this forum because when I check cmos, no hard drives are registered.
I can't get into safe mode, can't get past the administrator/user screen because no mouse operates here and can't select icons with the keyboard.(No admin passwords were set up anyway)
Booting from CD, repair console doesn't work because it can't find any hard drive.
Reluctant to do a complete reinstall because of precious stuff on the hard drive.
Using f8, "last known good..." just gives the same blank screen.
Using floppy boot, no other drives are recognized.
If my root directory has been wiped out by a virus or something, how come it gets past post and starts to load windows? If it's merely the graphics driver or similar not loading, how come the cmos shows no hard drive?
Is this a hardware or software problem? Any help much appreciated.

    THE ANSWER !!
    Hi Guys,
I finally got to talk to the guy who set up this system and he said that it is normal for RAID drives not to show on BIOS/CMOS. 'Think of it like a vrtual drive' he said. When the black and white initialization screen shows something like: 'Nividia Stripe-healthy'...then THAT is the hard-drive.
He said that as long as Windows was getting to the loading screen, that means that the computer itself was functioning okay, so don't worry about BIOS, the problem is a file corruption in windows, or virus etc.
Also he said that when trying to use recovery console or reinstall windows, because the system can only read the RAID drives through a SCSI interface, you have to load the Nvidia SCSI drivers from floppy by pressing f6 when asked to at the bottom of the pale blue screen (from Windows cd boot), before trying to do anything with windows (or windows will just tell you it can't read the drives, as it did before with me.)
So in the end, I reinstalled windows by that method and everyting seems fine so far. YAY!
Thanks you people for being kind enough to help someone out. I really appreciate it.

  • Screen randomly flickers (horizontal lines) -- Is it hardware or software?

In the last week my macbook screen has started to flicker...
This happens when I'm surfing, working on photos, and doing other tasks...
The the flickering seems very horizontal and is completely random in the time (mostly only for a second or two a few times a day) and the amount (less then 10% of the screen 90% of the time).
I cannot tell of it's hardware or software.
What can I do to solve this issue?
*Are there any questions you could ask that could help troubleshoot this problem?*

To my experience, it is hardware problem. Screen flickering is a complex problem because it can be caused by the logic board, LCD screen or inverter. Most of the time the problem is caused by the video components on the logic board. You can connect your MacBook to an external display to narrow down the root cause of your screen flickering problem.
If you have further question or need help, you can send me an email. I am glad to reply your email.

  • New 15" Screen Issue: It's NOT a  Hardware or Software Problem!!

So, just brought my PB in to an independent, certified Apple tech.
Bottomline from his perspective was that it is neither a hardware or software issue. His opinion was that Apple is putting in cheaper LCDs!!! To his eyes - ane experience - they look like the cheaper one put in many Wintel books.
That said, we can't expect a software or hardware solution EXCEPT total replacement of the LCD - which personally I don't see happening. Now we know why this version of the PB offered more features at a cheaper price. They skimped on the screen!!!
The good news. it is not an issue for the 17"!!
As for all of us "stuck" with one? I'm afraid, not much can be done or expected from Apple at this point. The techs are not lying to you when they say it's "within spec." For these lower quality screens it is.
So, that's it as far as I'm concerned. Question answered. Not the answer I wanted to hear. But, it is the one I expected. It will be interesting to see if Apple uses these screens on the next release of PBs.

Not sure that the LCD screen is so cheap. The lines are not produced by bad packaging of the pixels units, because they fully disappear when using pure colors, and are just apparent in mid tones.
My guess is that this has something to do with an inadequate coupling btw the video board and the screen. This does not mean that this can be repaired in keeping the same hardware configuration. This rather means to me that the screen deserves a more adapted piece of equipment to work with.
I have an exemple of a low price Dell LCD screen at home (and an exemple of very good Sony as well). The Dell displays faint lines, but they do not disappear on the right sausage boy when moving the crankycat safari window. The Sony is just perfect.
Hope is not totally gone..but I did send back my powerbook for a refund just in case there is none.

Don't know until you troubleshoot. First step is a reset:

  • Kernel Panic - Hardware or Software?

Kernel Panic - Hardware or software?
    Mac Pro Early 2008. 2 x 2.8 Quad Core. 16 GB RAM. OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
This morning my Mac Pro Refused to start.
It goes into an endless cycle of the grey panel message "Your computer needs to restart etc. ...... " with each restart failing.
Here is what I have done and discovered so far:
    1) Disconnected all peripherals and network and secondary monitor leaving only principle Apple monitor, Apple Keyboard and Apple mouse. No help - Problem remains.
    2) Done a recovery start up and repaired disks and permissions (nothing significant found there). No help -  problem remains.
    3) I can do a safe boot and have tried rebooting from this. No help - problem remains.
However inspecting the system from Safe Boot starts to show some interesting things.
    4) If I open Acitivity Monitor and look at RAM it is completely clogged with Page Ins (Over 14 GB of them). The Pie Chart is completely red. This would look like a RAM issue. There is almost 160 GB of free space on my startup disc and 16GB of RAM Installed.
    5) "About this Mac" Memory tab correctly finds and identifies all the DIMMS and shows their size and slots correctly.
No. 4 would seem to indicate a memory problem but No 5 would seem to indicate that the DIMMS are functional and the system able to address them.
I have tried removing the DIMMs and trying them pair by pair and in various different combinations. No change. The system can consistently identify them and their slots but the Only Safe Boot works and the Page In log jam is always present.
I am mystified as whether I have a hardware or software problem here. If it is software then a full clean re-install followed by a time machine restore may solve things. What worries me is that if I have a hardware problem and attempt this I may end up with no OS as well.
Any suggestions for further analysis? Any wisdoms greater than mine can explain the significance of the Page ins? Should I try re-installlng first or is it time to visit the repair shop?
    Any help welcome please.
    David Mac

Sorry to be late responding. I have been unexpectedly bedridden since posting and only able to try your suggestion today.
Sadly I cannot get Apple's hardware test to run at all. Holding down the D key does nothing at all. Accessing the test by internet isn't going to work on a 2008 machine. Tried the original installation disc as suggested by apple. Doesn't work. Since Lion install I cannot start up from any disc pre Lion-  it causes a black screen 'You need to restart ......".
    So stymied for now.
Looks like I'll have to try ans see if a full clean re-install will work. If it doesn't then back to the shop.
I have the whole system fully backed up externally so nothing to lose in the long run. Just don't want more chaos than necessary ;o)

  • Hardware or software issue causing purple lines & no boot...

I was watching a movie on my Mac Pro (2006) and suddenly the video stopped and purple lines went all over parts of the screen. I couldn't do anything, not even a force quit, I was forced to turn off the power.
Upon restart, the Apple logo is showing the same purple lines, though the grey background was unaffected. After the loading, the logo disappears and then I get a cursor and a beachball and nothing else. Mouse input works, but otherwise the computer does nothing.
I was able to do a safe boot and it works, but the purple lines still remain.
Anyone else have this issue? Does it sound like hardware or software?
I'm probably gonna transfer files and just reinstall snow leopard. I'm hoping it's not a dead video card or something. If that's the case, then it's just become a craigslist special... maybe $250?lol
    Any input/help is much appreciated.

Actually, I have a Late 2011 Macbook Pro Quad Core Sandy Bridge that's mostly been sitting in my safe since I bought it in 2011 (insurance replacement form a Core 2 Duo era Macbook Pro that was stolen).
That thing has always run circles around the Mac Pro. It may run at a slower clock speed, but everything about the Sandy Bridge Core i7 is superior to the now severely obsolete Woodcrest Xeons
It's definitely served me well, it was my first Intel Mac, I moved from a Powerbook G4 1.5ghz to this, and it was amazingly fast, even running Adobe CS2 in Rosetta. But lately, for me it's been getting slower and slower. Any websites with flash are slow as molasses. I can't even make it through an episode of a show on the History or A&E websites without the last segment being a slideshow.
I've recently switched to the Chrome browser, it's helped in usability, but it's still not ideal.
I'll wait for a good deal on a 7300GT on eBay to get it back up and running. Still, I really like iCloud and all the integration that comes with the latest Mac OS releases, so it really is time for me to start using my modern Macs more. I was already heading in this direction. It's been a good system, but it's time has passed. I'm already moving my iTunes HD to my Macbook Pro, next I gotta get the files off of the Mac Pro onto an external.
Maybe I'll just keep it around as a Rosetta system since that's the one area where my Macbook Pro falls short. I still use PPC apps once in awhile.lol

my hp failed to start it says A recent hardware or software change may be the problem.  It gives the option of Launch start up repair or Start windows normally, it freezes after clicking any option. What can i do?
My pc is a Compaq Presario CQ62-216DX Notebook. It also says on the screen, Description: fix problems that are preventing windows from starting.

    Hi,
Shut down the notebook.  Tap away at f10 as you start the notebook to enter the bios menu.  Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run tests on both the Hard Drive and Memory.  Post back with the details of any error messages.

  • Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change... Bootcamp

Hello everyone, I really need help...
I have a MacPro, Snow leopard, BootCamp 3.1. I installed Windows Vista Ultimate on Bootcamp. I also use Vista home on Parallels 6 (this might be a factor, I don't know yet).
Everything was fine. After a few days, when I tried to start up my mac in Vista via Bootcamp, I get a black screen from windows (windows boot manager), telling me a recent hardware or software change might be the cause. File: \Boot\BCD Status:0xc000000f An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.
    After that, the system freezes.
When I start back up in OS X, I open the BootCamp Drive... and nothing is on there. Unmounting and mounting doesn't help. Before I was able to see the files. The only way to repair is to delete and make a new partition. I have 3 HDDs so I decided to dedicate a complete single, physical drive to Windows. Same thing after 3 days. Programs I used under Mac OS X were Parallels, Dragon Age, Steam. But nothing which should write or delete the Windows Boot.
What is the problem, anyone else experiencing the problem? It is a pain, cause re-installing it every 4 days and updating it all takes half a day.

At this day and age, I'd dump Vista.
    You can:
    try safe boot
    run sfc /scannow
    restore to last restore point
    rollback driver update
run chkdsk and attempt to fix bad blocks
boot from your Vista DVD and use System Repair features
run out and buy Windows 7 Pro x64
    Ask Paralells forum
I have been using Windows 7 Beta, RC and release rock solid on Mac Pro and two PCs.
You tried Bing I hope. Quite good hits.

There are currently two ways of repairing the Windows Vista bootloader:
1.With EasyBCD via the Diagnostics Section.
(Recommended, Easy to use and guaranteed results)
2.By booting from the Windows Vista DVD and using the recovery console.
(Use if you cannot boot into any version of Windows to use EasyBCD)

  • Windows failed to start. A recent hardware of software change might be the cause.

    Hello,
Last night when I was finished using it for the day I went ahead and shut it down. Prior to shutting it down it was working perfectly fine. When I went to boot it up this morning, I kept getting the error that windows was  unable to start normally and it took me to startup repair multiple times. I don't have the operating system disk (Windows 7) anymore I'm not sure if my computer just didn't come with a windows 7 disk. All I know is that I don't have it anymore.  I tried basically everything I could find on the internet that was supposed to help with it and nothing works. I tried going into safe mode and using the command prompt, still nothing. It's now just showing up with a screen saying "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware of software change might be the cause. But like I said, this comes as a problem seeing as though I don't have my windows disc. I would really like to now if there is a way to fix this problem. I am requesting your help to fix this issue.

try to download and burn a copy of win7 from forums.MyDigitalLife.info
match your version and bits of windows
then run   repair / Startup Repair 3x off the win7 dvd without letting it try to start into windows.  rebuilds your partition tables and fixes a lot of things.
if that doesnt get you into windows... read up and run   SFC   /offwindir /offbootdir  from the win7 dvd
you dont say much what you've tried  .. i assume you tried from the F8 menu / startup repair / an older system restore date ?
You need the windows7 dvd !!!

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP Notebook and looping repair screen on startup. Try performing a hard reset. When performing a hard reset please note remove any and all USB devices, and remove memory cards from the card reader slot. Disconnect all non-essential devices. If that does not help try to turn on the computer you start to press F11 repeatedly till the menu opens. You can do a system restore.

  • Lion 10.7 Only Boots in Safe Mode. Is This a Hardware or Software Issue?

Hi. On my iMac late 2009 i7 8GB bought last March only. I reinstalled Lion (I didn't erase the whole disk because I have Boot Camp Windows and I have filed there) and it can only boot in safe mode if I use the Mac's built-in EFI bootloader (where you have to press option on restart) menu then press shift after choosing the iMac OS X hardisk. I've been trying to fix it for around 4 days now today. I'm tempted to take it to the authorized Mac shop but that could take weeks to months in our country. If I let it boot normally, it would seem to have a kernel panic and would stop at the white/gray screen. Verbose mode showed that is stopped at something 10 of these like: nstat fail.
Is this a GPU hardware problem, specifically the 3D element of this 4850M GPU? I'd like to do load each kext, each extension manually but I can't find them in Lion. When I use the Lion DVD or the Lion Recovery partition, it's very sluggish, every click and process takes 20 seconds to minutes. If I try to boot in Linux, Snow Leopard DVD or Snow Leopard external hardisk, there seems to be a kernel panic. It's either just a black screen or a garbled screen.
I want to erase/format the iMac's hardisk but in Safe Mode, it can't be mounted even if I use Disk Utility. If only there's a way to force it to mount, I can save some Windows 7 file to one of my external hardisk or flash drive. Does anyone know of an app or program that can mount NTFS files on Lion's Safe mode?
If it's a Lion bug, has Lion somehow corrupted the Mac's built-in (hardware not the EFI partition in the hardisk) EFI or somehow corrupted the Mac or GPU's ROM? Could it be a new OS X virus? Should I then perform in Safe Mode to flash the GPU ROM and the Mac's ROM again (I have the latest)?
Do you think if I erased the whole drive, reinstalled it again with either Snow Leopard (assuming it doesn't boot into a garbled screen) or Lion things will go back to normal?
Has anyone experienced something like this? What was the culprit (was it a hardware or software issue) and what was the solution?
    Gbu.

Hi thanks for all the concern and replies. I've tried all that.
I had just got it back from the shop last Friday. It was there for around two weeks. It was a faulty GPU (when you see garbled display that's consisten when booting it the GPU). I have a strong feeling it's related to the Lion install 10.7 or 10.7.1 and may be similar to reports of Mac laptops overheating. It's good the GPU is removable, it might have taken 3 week or a month if it had been the whole board.
It's a blessing in disguise though as with all or most cases because I also got to have the LCD replaced for excessive backlight bleeding (in my opinion), the dead pixel from the previous LCD isn't there anymore (though under the glass there're some smudges but nothing crucial). The backlight bleeding is still the same though in my opinion but at least it's new.
It's a great thing I bought Applecare. I didn't buy it for the iPhone because that's more durable (my iPhone 3G's 3 years old now and it's still solid. Although there are scratches and a crack at the back at the bottom, got sqeezed under the table I think when I sat). I think Applecare is a good recommend for things that get hot like desktop and laptop Macs(are the iOS considered Macs btw?) which are twice or thrice the price of iOS devices.
    Gbu.

  • Hardware or Software Issues?

I've been having some odd problems with my iPhone 4S these past few weeks and am wondering if these are hardware or sofware problems.
I'll notice that randomly when listening to music, the volume will decrease on it's own own to almost nothing. I'll turn it back up, and a few minutes later, the same thing happens again.
I'll also find that sometimes the screen isn't very responsive. I'll need to touch icons a few times before they launch or folders close.
Also, this morning while browsing through Instagram, the home/lock buttons just stopped working. I was still able to navigage within the app no problem, but I just couldn't exit it or lock it. I did finally get it to reboot by holding down both buttons for about 10 seconds.
I've had every single iPhone since the first one and never experienced these issues. Also, I'm inclined to think it's more hardware than software because these issues just started popping up a few weeks ago and haven't been here from day one. I've done a restore and the issues still persist.

    Hi Ralph,
    Yes, I've done all this.
I took it to an Apple store last week (just as a walk-in) and was basically told to do the restore and come back if it's still acting up and see a Genius. I went through the whole restore process and while using it this past week I'd see the problems come and go.
I'm going in later today to a Genius appointment, but I'm afraid that because the problems pop up randomly it'll be hard to recreate it for them. I'd really like for them to just swap it out with a replacement. Is this likely to happen?

  • Screen artifacts "electric snow"

Hello - ever since I upgraded to Mavericks I've been gettign screen artifacts, or as I call it, electric snow patterns on my screen.  They come and go, seemingly at random.  At first it was a minor annoyance, but now it is much worse. Plus, yesterday my iMac started rebooting randomly.
The snow looks like asterixes, like an old 8-bit program overlayed on my beautiful 27" screen.
    I appreciate any help.
    Best,
    Steve

This has been a common problem across the line with the new Nvidia cards, but I am very surprised to see it on the OPs Mac as it is older and therefore probably doesn't have the Nvidia chipset.
See this thread for the fury:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1924473
There are many others too, the snow is common. Hopefully they will fix it in a software update since basically every new Mac has the Nvidia chipsets in it.
P.S. I have not had it on my 17" MBP with either the 9400M or 9600M enabled, however, I have seen it on an older Mac Mini, so I think it has something to do with software.

  • Hardware and Software inventory data shows blank in SCCM 2012

    Hi All,
I have this issue. When i try to view the inventory data for hardware and software it shows blank data. Below is the screenshot of that. Mine is a lab setup and i have only 2 clients configured.
I am using the default client settings which comes with priority of 10000. I altered the inventory setting to pull .dll and .exe files with changing the interval. But still the same issue. I analysed the InventoryAgent.log and found the below error on both
    the clients.
    Inventory: 1 Collection Task(s) failed.

    Hi Garth,
A reboot just fixed the issue on that system in which the options are not coming to run the setup manually.
As i had hibernated the VM's and the server in which those options were not coming is the physical box hosting the VM's (SCCM server and one more client). The physical box is also acting as a client and the SQL server holding the SCCM Database.
Now things which need to be troubleshooted are:
    1. Why is it Hardware inventory report appearing after running the setup manually and not appearing automatically.
    2. The software inventory report is not appearing at all even after it is being run manually.
Below is the screen shot of the default client settings policy i am using.
