Screen black, but fans on and responding to keyboard

Yesterday my husband was changing the mouse batteries and must have accidentally clicked something. A screen popped up saying to turn the computer off and turn it back on. I did that, but now the screen is completely black.
I have unplugged it, and plugged it back in, powered on and it makes the chime, and responds to the keyboard. I know this because hitting the volume button or any button really, makes the appropriate noise. the weird noise for the volume and the 'error' noise for hitting a weird sequence of keys. I can't figure out why the screen won't come on.
I am pretty sure I reset the PRAM, and all that happened was the fans came on extremely loud, and strong out of the top.
Just looking for some answers!
Its and IMAC bought new in 2010.
Thanks in advance!

Try doing a SMC and PRAM reset first, do each 3x back to back. Please use the directions here to properly reset:

my iphone 5's screen blacks out every now and then. the phone is turned on but the screen is black and i can receive calls. what is wrong with my phone?

I have to believe this has something to do with iOS 7 issues. I have taken my screen blacked out 5s twice to the Genius Bar and the found a bunch of system apps had crashed.  So if this is the case, is iOS7 the problem?

    Hi krishna706,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your iPhone is working but the screen is dark, try these steps next:
While connected to the iPhone charger, try to reset the iPhone.
Try to restore your phone and set it up as new.

  • Screen black but phone appears to work

screen black but phone appears to work

Is it always black, or only when you are on a call? If it is only on a call remove your case and screen protector (if any), as one of them is blocking the proximity sensor. If it is black all the time you probably have a hardware issue, but you can try rebooting - hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons at the same time until an Apple logo appears. If nothing at all happens after 30 seconds of holding your phone is broken.

  • Make iMac Screen black but computer still on

    Hello,
I am trying to make it look like my computer is off for about a week, but it is still really on. It is hard to explain why I need to do so. If I made a solid black image fullscreen for about a week, will that damage the screen? Is there another way to make it so my screen is black but the computer is still on? Thank you for any advice!

    Hi ccrosby94
In System Preferences > Energy Saver set Computer sleep: to Never and Display sleep to a few min's or sleep the display using an Active Screen Corner.

  • Iphone screen black but phone is ON

i dropped my iphone about 3 hours ago and it landed screen-down, but it was not shattered. everything on the phone works however i can't see anything - the screen is COMPLETELY black. i tried resetting it by pressing the home and power buttons at the same time, and it has not worked. since the phone is entirely functional except for the screen, i can hear when i get a text, etc. when i tried restarting it, I knew it worked because it made a sound when it came back on and was charging, therefore the only issue is the screen. what can I do? thank you!

You broke your phone when you dropped it.
Bring it and $149 to Apple for an out of warranty exchange.

  • Screen black but backlight on slightly

So, my Iphone screen is pretty cracked and lived a nice long time before the screen went out. I used to be able to fix using the recovery mode (holding on/off and home) however now that no longer works. when the phone is plugged in Itunes recongnizes with no issues but i cannot get the screen back! I think something may be wrong with volume too it vibrates randomly for who knows what reason because the phone is not in service until i fix it.
basically the phone is totally black but when i hit the on/off switch it does light up just a LITTLE.
Anyone know a good fix or what the problem could be? Probably taking it to a store tomorrow but just curious before I go empty my wallet LOL

From other reports of a similar nature it sounds like a logic board failure. Phone Apple or go to and Apple store and have it checked out.

  • Ipad Screen Black but can still hear locking sounds etc.

i just got my ipad today, and i was playing a game then right in the middle of it the screen goes black but looks like its shut down ive tried everything to get it to come on an nothing. i dont know if the screen has went out or what. any suggestions on how to fix this problem? and i purchased it somewhere they don't take returns. so please someone help.

Try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. When the screen goes blank power On again in the normal way.] It is absolutely/appsolutely safe!

My screen went black but it is still making the noises of being on. I don't know what to do. It just restored on my iTunes but now is not turning on.

    Hello,
I am currently an owner of an iPod Touch 4th generation, running IOS 6.1.2. I will be glad to help solve your problem with your iPod/iPad/or iPhone.
    Reset iPod/iPad/or iPhone:
Hard Reset: Hold down the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons on your  iPod/iPad/or iPhone for at least 10 seconds, or until Apple logo appears
Restore iPod/iPad/or iPhone (Restore to Factory Defaults):
Plug into computer that has iTunes installed
    Go to iTunes
    Click on your device
Click on the Summary Tab, and click on Restore
    Hope that helps!
If none of the above solutions work, could you please reply back as soon as possible, as I will try to find another solution to your problem.
    Sincerely,
    Pizza98704

    hello...can anyone advise me.  I have an ipad2 16gb A1396
the screen is black but its "dinging " so must be alive. had  a slight tumble of bed last night think may have knocked slightly of  nearby laptop. ipad ab0ut
    18 months old. many thanks

try a reset. Hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds. If you see the silver apple it's rebooting and the screen may come back.
Anecdotally, people have said they can turn their iPad over and give it a few smacks to knock whatever you jarred loose back into place. Obviously, you do this at your own risk because you could very well make things worse.

  • Screen black after sleep startup and won't turn off w/ power button?

I have a Powerbook G4 and hardly ever turn it off, till lately.
My computer started turning itself off after I would open it and wake it up from sleep mode. It would flash the screen quickly and then go black. All efforts to turn it off with the power button failed. I had to remove the battery and disconnect the power cord for about 2 minutes until it eventually shut down. I have not had this issue since I have been turning it off after every use, but was wondering if this was a sign that something was going out on my computer?
    Thanks!

Try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.
There's more to try but let's go a bit at a time.

  • Why is my screen working, but it's not responding to my touch?

I just replaced the screen myself, but the replacement screen itself is also cracked a little. It is a Verizon iPhone 4.

That probably has something to do with it, or there is additional hardware damage besides the screen that was damaged.

  • My iphone 5 screen is black but touch works and i can screenshot but screen is still black after restore what should I do?

and i can screenshot but screen is still black after restore what should I do, could it be a loose cable in the phone under the metal shield?

    Hello Dopeslayer242,
Thank you for providing the details of the issue you are experiencing with your iPhone.  I would be concerned too if I only saw a black screen.
I recommend following steps 2-6 below for an issue like this:
If a single application is not responding or stops responding when it opens, you can force it to close.
If the device is unresponsive or if certain controls aren't working as expected, restart your device.
If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on),reset your device.
If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
Let charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more about restoring iOS software.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.
You can find the full article here:

If you get to step 5, I recommend backing up your iPhone before performing the restore:
