Screen black when fully open

my 6 year old white macbook running OS 10.6.8 will not allow me to open all the way without screen going black.  After a warm up period I can begin easing it all the way open.  What a pain!  Can it be fixed and is it worth it on a 6 year old laptop?

- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restore from backup. See:
iOS: How to back up
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

If you have CC you can go to preferences>Experimental features and select scale UI 200%. Otherwise you're out of luck.

From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
    Click:   Remove All Website Data
    Then delete the cache.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, troubleshoot Safari extensions.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

  • Backlight black when slide open screen!

    Hi,
I have had my Blackberry Torch now for about 10months and last week i think i may have got it slightly wet after i tried to answer the phone when getting out of the bath. Since then it has been ok but last night when i slid open the screen everything went black. As soon as i slide the screen shut it works again! This basically means that i can only use the phone as a touch screen phone when it is down (which isn't good for me as I always text using the keypad when it is slided open).
I called o2 and they said before they send it off to be repaired that i should try upgrading all of the latest BB software as that might fix it. I have never had any upgrades but will this really be able to fix my screen? Is there any other way i can try and fix the phone myself? i've tried rebooting it many times and taking the battery out and leaving it out overnight to dry etc.
Any help would be very much appreciated . Thanks all!

    Hello
This could actually fix your issue IF it is a software problem, so it's definitely worth a try. If this doesn't work you could also try popping your phone into a bowl of rice (old wives tale!), it sounds silly but it has been known to draw moisture out of electronic equipment and I have used it to fix my phone after dropping it in the sink!
If neither of these options work you will need to look into getting your phone repaired, or claiming on insurance if you have it.
    Hope this helps

  • 9800 Screen blanks when slid open

The display screen on my Torch 9800 goes black when I slide open to access keypad.  Do you know the reason why and is there a fix?  Thank you.

either OS, theme or hardware related
remove theme and see if it persists
update to latest OS and if that dont fix it then most likely there is a hardware issue or possible the ribbon cable is damaged for the lcd

  • Bottom of screen contacts surface when fully open

Having just bought my first Mac (Macbook) I have generally been impressed with the quality of the product and all the accessories compared with Windows laptops. However there seems to be a 'design' fault with the angle range of the screen. I find that when the Macbook is at a comfortable height for typing I have to angle the screen far back in order to have it as close to 90 degrees to my eyes as possible and therefore get the best image quality. However doing this causes the bottom edge of the screen to contact the surface it is on and in fact even raises the back of the Macbook. The obvious concern is that the edge will become rubbed over time and ruin the appearance.
I find it strange that this flaw (IMO) was not picked up during the design stage considering how much attention to detail Apple seem to apply to their products. Obviously it would be solved by using some form of 'stand' to raise the back slightly but as I use it in several locations I don't really want to lug something like this around.
Just really wondering if anyone else has noticed this or seen any marks on the bottom edge of the screen that worries them?
Macbook 2 GHz Mac OS X (10.4.6) 1 GB RAM
Macbook 2 GHz (white)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1 GB RAM

Yes, just look at the macbooks at the Apple Store. They're all scratched on the lower areas of the display in the back.
Obviously Apple has a design issue with these thin computers. If they want them this thin, they need to redesign the hinge somehow. With the MBPs, Apple has chose to limit the tilt instead so you can't go that far back, but that is also far from ideal.
The 'solution' is to put a clean piece of paper underneath in the back so that it won't scratch...
Another solution would be for Apple to put USEFUL feet on this thing - bigger ones - so that the computer is raised a few mm more. That would do the trick.
Question is why Apple didn't figure this out before they started shipping?

  • HT201263 iPad screen went black when fully charged and would not come out of sleep mode, turn on or off and did nothing when connected to USB port?

I really do not want to restore this iPad if I can find another solution.  I had to let the battery drain completely in order to prepare it for restore, so I'm prepared to do that if I must.

    Reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
Note: Data will not be affected.

  • Why does my macbook pro screen stay black when i open it

This is an intermittent problem, it doesn't happen all the time.  I just wanted to know if I need to have my computer serviced or if I could correct it.

See this Apple note on starting the system with no video, which may help trouble shoot it.
I'd also run the Apple hardware test (run the extended test) to see if it picks up any hardware error.

  • Pantones turn black when PDF opened in Preview

I am creating mockups for a t-shirt design, this top photo is how the design looks in illustrator with the correct pantones: blue 3115C, Red 119C, and Black.
When I save it as a PDF and it is opened in the Preview Application, certain colors turn black like this:
This has happened several times lately and I have recently switched from Illy CS5 to CS6, so I wonder if that is the reason?
Any clues guys? Help is greatly appreciated.

Apple's Preview is one of the worst PDF viewers ever. Standard advice for just about every problem is "use the FREE Adobe Reader instead".
    That said, I'm intrigued:
    > I have recently switched from Illy CS5 to CS6, so I wonder if that is the reason?
    Can you test this?
A PMS ink does not "have" a color to display on screen, since the ink name in itself is enough to unambiguously identify it (when printing as color separations, to be exact). But (1) one would appreciate a fairly accurate preview, and (2) sometimes one needs to convert a PMS ink to its nearest equivalent in CMYK. For that reason, an approximation of the ink used should be stored into the PDF as well. I can't imagine Adobe forgot about that for CS6 (if so, your file won't work with Reader either), but maybe they switched it to a notation that poor dumb Preview cannot handle. In that case, I'm curious about what the difference could be.
If you can create a small file that demonstrably works correct in Preview when exported from CS5 and *not* from CS6, can you post both PDFs somewhere?

  • TIF thumbnails initially populate, but turn 80% black when I "Open With PS"

I'm scanning photographs with a relatively-new Epson 10000XL scanner. I save the scans as ~300MB TIFs, copy the entire folder, then crop the copies with Photoshop CS5 12.0.3 on a Win XP 2.2GHz Pentium Dual Core CPU with 3.25GB RAM. The crop goes fine and the the save seems to go fine. Filesize of all cropped files is consistent. A few days later, I notice the image is 80-90% black, with only the top strip OK. This happens to about 15% of the images I've scanned. The original scans are always OK, so I think I can rule out the scanner. The cropped image thumbnails look good in Bridge, but when I right click and "Open with PS", the thumbnail turns 80% black and an 80% black TIF shows up in Photoshop...baffling. Sometimes half the image is black, but usually it is mostly black. Always, it is the bottom area of the image that is black. I can rescan and recrop the image, but a 15% rescan rate at 6-7 min/scan is killing me. What the devil is causing this? Is this a hardware issue, and if so, is it a RAM deficiency? Defective RAM? Defective hard drive? Conflicting software? Whimpy graphics card? Something else?

    Replies to Curt and Omke:
In original post you said you were running Win XP, so it that home computer and work is Win7?
Work PC = Win XP, Photoshop CS5, Dual-core processor and 4 GB RAM. Home PC = Win7, Photoshop 5.0, Quad-core processor and 4GB RAM. Both are 32-bit OS. I cropped and saved 20 of these TIFs on the home Win7 machine, and had no problems with black images at any time. I tested those same TIFs on a work machine that is identical to my Win XP work machine, and had lots of problems with them turning black. This suggests that the OS, video card and/or CPU are causing trouble on the work machine, not necessarily the RAM. It doens't seem to be a problem unique to my PC, but rather to all the PCs that are just like my PC (our organization buys in bulk, and we all have identical PC setups).
Most likely it is the RAM.  With a 64 bit machine you are really handicapping yourself with 4 gigs.  You also need a good deal of space on the scratch disk, so make sure you have ample free space.
I have 62GB out of 150GB free on C drive, but it’s fragmented. Will try defragmenting to see if that helps. I think, with my 32-bit Win XP, I am limited to 4GB, right? Does a 64-bit system have that much improvement over 32-bit?
Graphics card is the other likely suspect.
On the work PC that is causing me trouble, graphics card= ATI Radeon HD 3450.
In Bridge go to advanced preferneces and check "use software rendering".  That will help if graphics card is underpowered.
That will help with what, exactly? Will that help avoid corrupted files? It seems like the problem lies in Photoshop, not necessarily with Bridge.
In photoshop go the edit/kpreferences/file handling and make sure Open GL is not checked.
It was checked. I unchecked it, but still had images turning black on me when I cropped and saved them.
Your files are still OK, they only show not good in Bridge? or are they all damaged?
~15% of cropped scan tifs open mostly black in PS and Windows Explorer, and open mostly black in Bridge full-screen preview also. The other 85% look OK in all programs. The 15% initially look OK as thumbnails in Bridge, but after ~30 min, or if I try to open them in PS or full-screen preview, they turn mostly black. It would appear to me that those 15% of cropped scan files are corrupt, and perhaps only look OK in Bridge initially because Bridge is accessing some embedded low-resolution preview, then later updating the preview using the actual image file, but I’m not sure on that last point.
You state to have PS 12.0.3 in, while I'm on a Mac I have 12.0.4 installed s the latest so first try a software update.
That’s a pretty involved process with our IT dept. I don’t have Admin privileges to do that, but I’ll raise the issue.
Also check your PS performance settings. If you have only 4 GB RAM installed and you did point PS to more then the default and having some other applications open you will become soon short of RAM. (Bridge pointed to that already)
This is a point of confusion for me. PC specs list 3.25GB RAM, but in PS prefs, “Available RAM: 1691MB, of which 71% (1201 MB) is allowed for PS use. I would think PS would at least recognize all the PC RAM as available, but this is also the general trend on my home PC where PS doesn't recognize all the RAm that Windows does...must be a distinction between total RAM and available RAM.
In Bridge Prefs the default setting for maximum file size to build HQ preview is 1GB. Could you check if this is also your case?
    Yes, that is the case.
And I also agree with Curt that if you have multiple files open with that size your machine specs should be above average, and you should have at least 10 % free space on your HD.
I’m running at about 50% free HD space, though fragemented. I would like to make some sort of recommendation to IT about a system upgrade, and it seems like a better processor is a key factor, followed by the OS and graphics card. Without going to a 64-bit system, I believe I'm maxed out on RAM, but correct me if I'm wrong. Our organization prefers everyone to be on the same OS, which is why we're all still on WinXP.

  • Purchased my computer just before new ones came out in Oct. It runs slow and shows Gray screen sometimes when I open it. Anyone else having this problem?

I have a new but 2010 model. It operates very slow and has gray screen occassionaly. One store said it's "safe sleep", the other graphic board. Is anyone else having this problem with computer only 4 mos. old?

Your problems may be caused by software or hardware, including the gray screen and the slowness.  The intermittent gray screen is a puzzler and probably is hardware.   TUSL2C’s diagnosis may be right on the money.  A question is how to isolate it to HW or SW that so you can get good service?
The obvious cheap and easy fix is to replace that cable but I don’t think you can do that  because it is under warranty.  There are other ways to isolate the problem that won’t void the warranty.
If the disk turns out to be healthy and it continues to boot to a gray screen then that will be a sign that internal hardware, other than the disk, is to blame.  Since they are blaming it on software we will be able to test it with a pristine OS X installation that has no 3rd-party software to blame.
    > They are calling it "Safe Sleep Mode" and that happens if I don't use the machine within 4 hours.
The machine should go to sleep and wake up almost instantly every time without a gray screen.  If you can demonstrate the problem reliably by putting it to sleep and waking it up then that will be most useful.  We will show it failing on pristine OS X software without 3rd-party mods to prove it is an Apple problem.  Similarly if you can reliably show the gray screen from a power-on boot that will help.
My first question is do you have a current Time Machine (or other) backup?  If not you should create one before we get to steps that could stress the disk.  If it is a faulty cable or a faulty disk then the system could stop functioning at any time.  It is always prudent to maintain a current backup and especially important when the system is sick.  If you do not have a Time Machine (or other) backup then post back for instructions on how to create one.
In the mean time please download and run Etrecheck and post back the results.
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
This will indicate possible software compatibles and other details that may be helpful in a diagnosis.
Also run disk diagnostics with Disk Utility.  This will check if the disk and filesystem are healthy.
From the Finder, pull down on the Go menu to Utilities.  This will open the Applications > Utilities folder.
    Then run Disk Utility.
Click on the upper left disk icon.
Does the S.M.A.R.T. status say “Verified”.
If not the disk/SSD is unhealthy and needs to be replaced.
Click on the icon indented below, usually called “Macintosh HD”.
    Verify Disk.
If it finishes with a green “OK” message then all is well with the disk.
If it shows errors in red then you may have found a problem.
    Click on Repair Disk Permissions.
It will give lots of messages in black and white, which are OK.
If it gives any messages in red then there is an issue to address.
It will be useful to have some test that shows the slow speed that uses standard OS X applications such as Pages, Numbers, Presenter, iTunes, iMovie... or even just the Finder opening windows or starting applications.  We can then use that test when isolating the source of the slowness.
How many seconds does it take to boot from power-on to either the login screen or the Finder is up?  Please time that.  It is a good speed test.  If it is over a minute then something is wrong.
One way to isolate the issues will be to sandbox it using another disk to test what happens with different software on different hardware disks in different locations.  That will not void the warranty.
But before going there or proceeding further let’s look at the Etrecheck and Disk Utility results, ensure the system is backed up, and then try some other standard tests.
