Screen black, won't sleep, but iBook seems to be on

I haven't quite been able to find an answer to my problem on the discussion groups yet.
Two nights ago, my girlfriend was using our 900mhz G3 iBook (dual USB) running 10.3.9. She was surfing the internet and closed the screen to put it to sleep. When she went to wake it up, the screen was black and not resonding. When I got home, I could hear the fan working and the caps lock light went on when I pressed it in. If you held down the power button it seemed to power down when you turned it off and would make the power up/on sound when you turned it on. However, if you closed the lid, the sleep light would not come on.
Yesterday, I did some reading and decided to do a PMU reset when I got home. I forgot to look up how to reset the PRAM and didn't do it. Before doing the PMU reset, I took out the battery and disconnected the iBook from the power for at least a minute. Then, I reset the PMU and the computer magically came back to life without any problems.
I immediately restarted with the hardware test CD and it came up again no problem. I started the hardward tests and it made it through to memory. The Logic Board and other hardware tested fine. But when it was in the middle of testing the RAM, a weird blobby rainbowey green/purple/white/black sort of blob started moving up and down the sceen and then eventually froze as one big color changing blob.
I did a forced restart and the screen never really came back. The computer still seems to be on (the volume button works and it sounds like it's on). However, the screen is totally black. And resetting the PMU again has not worked at all.
Any thoughts?

This seems similar to the problem that I had just a few days ago. I was typing as paper and the screen just flipped out and the computer froze. I had to do a hard shutdown and then zapped the pram and the PMU. The computer was clearly "on" but the screen was black. I took it to the apple sote and they sent it out for repair. It was the logic board that failed on mine(the logic board is a known issue and has an extended coverage on it. check this link (http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/)) That being said it is odd that when you were able to run the hardware test, the logic board was ok. My mother in law had a very similar problem to mine except when she plugged in an external monitor she could see the desktop etc. When she took hers in for her issue it was something different and not covered by the apple extended protection. Do you have an external monitor to test with?
With all of that being said your absolute best bet is to take it to apple. They will most likely have to send it to a tech center. I told them that if it was anything other than the logic board I wanted to be notified to authorize the repairs so I didn't come back with a huge bill.

  • When I type documents in word they show black on the screen, black font is on but they print all in blue ink only.  help

I am using word.  I type in black font, it shows black on the monitor but prints only in blue ink.  What is wrong?

You sure that the monitor isn't set to a color or darkness that doesn't make dark blue look like black?
I would force the text color with Microsoft Word to black or automatic, and see if it makes a difference.  It should be obvious by the spectrum when you choose it what color it is using.  If it is not on the complete dark end of the spectrum, it could be picking dark blue.

  • Ichat Share Screen - video won't work but i can here sound

hi .. i have a problem with ichat screen sharing . it happens when Im trying to share my friends screen for controlling is mac. so i ask to share is screen and he accepted. and now the only thing that works is the sound , i can here him talking but i cant see his desktop.
what am i doing wrong ?

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
iChat Screen Sharing Connects similarly to an Video or Audio Only chat.
As you have found out it includes a Audio Only chat along side the Screen "transfer"
iChat uses one port to send the Visible Invite on port 5678 using the UDP Protocol
Video or Audio Only chats then move to one port from 16393-16402 (Usually the last one) to Make the connection.
Screen Sharing uses a Random Port for a VNC connection Along side.
This can mean if either end is using Port Forwarding to open Ports the Screen Sharing picture bit cannot get through.
This would normally mean the chat fails as both parts make up the connection.
Move to using UPnP if your routing devices (both ends) has it.
iChat 4 and 5 are the only versions that can Screen Share.
The Screen Share is "Created" by a Software "camera" within iChat.
Does the Buddy have the option in iChat's Video Menu > "Camera Enabled" ticked (On) ?
Selecting this toggles the tick On or Off and therefore the Camera On or Off.
There is also the possibility that the Software camera is not "Active" or something is wrong with it in his iChat.
There are ways of starting iChat using Terminal that can look at that.
You are getting the message in big white letters that Screen Sharing is starting ?
But you are saying it does not resolve in to his Screen.
Do you have his screen as a small window bottom Left ?
Normally you can change between the two once the Connection is active, however iChat also remembers where windows were the last time you used them and there is a vague possibility that you previously had a screen share going On when you closed/Quit iChat with your Screen as the "front" one.

  • Mac won't sleep but keeps trying to wake itself

Whenever I put the lid down or press the sleep button, the indicator light doesn't start flashing but just stays on and then every 30s or so the comp makes a whirring sound like its trying to wake itself or open even though its not asleep. Once in a while it does actually go to sleep but then after an hour or so it trys to wake itself up again repeatedly. Help!

I have the same problem; it is caused by the USB mouse, and wasn't cured by restarts or resetting SMC. I also tried the combo update on top of the regular 10.4.9 update and still no dice.
I had this same problem with my old PowerBook using earlier versions of Tiger. The only solution was to go back to Panther which allowed me to sleep without unplugging the mouse.
Apple really needs to solve this sleep vs USB problem. It has been popping up in numerous versions of OS10. Does anybody know a workaround besides unplugging the mouse every time I put it to sleep (really *****) or backdating to 10.4.8?

  • Black screen after waking from sleep, but mouse pointer visible

I'm not sure if this is the same as the many other posts on problems connecting the Mac Mini to an external monitor. In my case, after it wakes, there is no login menu - but the mouse pointer is visible and I can move it around the screen no problem.
At present, I have to power the Mac Mini down and back up again, which is unacceptable.
What's causing this and how can I fix it?

Yes, I have this problem too. I reported to Apple about 3 or 4 weeks ago. They said no one else ever reported it and said they would escalate it but they have never got back too me. It is a pain because my mini is a media center pc and hard to get to when this happens.
For now the work around I use is to unplug the mini dvi connecter and plug it back in; this fixes the issue until the next time it happens.
+My mini (2009 version) is connected using the mini-dvi connector to a Denon receiver (with a DVI->hdmi connector) which is then connected to a sony 1080p TV. This replaced an older mini (intel duo) which did not have this problem using the same setup.+

  • Macbook Screen Black - won't brighten

I was using my macbook last night, and when I went to sleep, I closed my macbook and put it away, plugged in. When I woke up, it was fully charged, but when I opened it this morning, the screen was fully black and won't brighten. I restarted it and it made the noise that it makes when it starts, and for a second, the white screen with the apple showed up but then it went black again. I have it hooked up to my tv right now, and it is working fine otherwise, it just seems to be the screen that isn't working. The screen isnt completely black, It's just very dim. I can see the screen on my macbook but it is too dark to do anything, and when I try to turn the brightness up it says it is all the way up.

    1. Restart.
    2. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • MBP won't sleep, but a clean Lion install does sleep

Since the install of Lion my old MBP, the MBP won't go to sleep.
I did a clean install of Lion on an external HD and it sleeps just fine. Therefore it must be something I migraded from my old SL.
Before I rebuild my MBP is there a plist file that I can delete that might help fix this no-sleep problem?
If not, then I'll start moving forward with rebulding my external HD and then tranfer it to my internal HD.
Thanks in advance for any help!!!

Thanks, I'll take a look. I killed all the pgms that my logon starts.
I also need to try to come in single user and see if that helps.
Comparing will be difficult since it looks like 10 pages printing out, but it's a good idea.
I was hoping just deleting a plist would fix it..I haven't rebuilt the system for many years, so I am also thinking about that as an alternative. I'll check the sleep function after every few apps that I add.

  • Screen Sharing won't work, but every other VNC client will

I have been trying to resolve this for months, and nothing has worked so far. I can connect to my Mac Mini Server (Snow Leopard Server) from LogMeIn, from Chicken of the VNC, from JollyFastVNC, and from VNC clients on my iPad and iPhone. However, I cannot connect using OSX's own Screen Sharing service. I'm really frustrated, and I've posted here before without any sort of help. Is there ANYONE that can solve this problem for me?

To restate your issues and your question and your concern, you're frustrated, you're using a WiFi connection, you're not attempting remote access, it's not working for some protocols, and you're receiving unspecified error message(s).
Start by posting the diagnostics and messages received when this "doesn't work".
Then reconfigure the network, and (for testing) specifically move the screen sharing client box onto (and add one if needed) the same network switch as the server. Remove the WiFi device (a router) from the network connection. (Unmanaged gigabit network switches are cheap, too.)
In addition to and in parallel with reconfiguring the network (for testing), also confirm that all of the network port connections on the WiFi are established on the correct physical ports, if you're using that device as a network gateway and NAT device in addition to using it as a router.
Also ensure the firmware on the WiFi device is current.
Drop the firewall on the client.
Given you're probably on a NAT-based network and (guessing) using the WiFi device is configured as a gateway, post up some DNS or mDNS information, and a forward and reverse dig of the IP address. (I haven't seen issues such as this with local screen sharing via the Apple tools, but other Apple tools are known to be sensitive to incorrect DNS configurations.) From the same client you're attempting the screen-sharing:
    dig -x your.target.ip.address.

Try a reset. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 second until you see the Apple logo Ignore the red slider.

  • How can I get my iMac to not go to sleep, but also black out the screen?

I want to leave my iMac on during the night, however when I sleep the display it ends up (after a couple of hours) completely going to sleep and an AppleScript won't work. Is there a way to make the screen go black but keep the computer on?
I've got energy savers preferences to never sleep the computer and never put the hard drives to sleep, and when I press control + option + eject I sleep the screen, but AppleScript's won't work...

You can just set a hot corner to black the screen and it won't go to sleep.
Ensure the sleep slider is at never.
Go to System Preferences, and click "Exposé & Spaces"
Go to the "Exposé" Tab, you will see "Active Screen Corners"
Change one to "Sleep Display" So when you put your cursor to the corner and leave it there (don't touch it or it will come back to a normal screen) it will be black but won't sleep!
This is what I have set on my iMac, hope it helps! It's my first answer post

I had this same problem.  Tried everything the internet said including a full restore.  Which was terrible.  Nothing worked until.....go to general...reset....reset all settings.
You had to go back in and reset anything you customized afterwards, however it does not allow the store to load.  Thanks!

  • Screen black after sleep startup and won't turn off w/ power button?

I have a Powerbook G4 and hardly ever turn it off, till lately.
My computer started turning itself off after I would open it and wake it up from sleep mode. It would flash the screen quickly and then go black. All efforts to turn it off with the power button failed. I had to remove the battery and disconnect the power cord for about 2 minutes until it eventually shut down. I have not had this issue since I have been turning it off after every use, but was wondering if this was a sign that something was going out on my computer?
    Thanks!

Try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.
There's more to try but let's go a bit at a time.

  • Screen blacks out after a few seconds and won't return to normal state.

I have the 30 gig ipod photo that i got about a year and a half ago. Whenever I look at the screen to access music or anything, the screen blacks out like there's a screensaver or something and won't return back to normal. Even after I reset it, it stays normal for a few seconds and then blacks out again. The backlighting still works so it's just a bright black screen and I have function of the click wheel because it clicks everytime I move up or down. I already tried restoring it so I am all out of options. Anyone PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks
    Steve

This happens rarely but consistently! I't seems to happen about 5% of the time waking from sleep. It MAY be more prone to happen if I had been moving with it in my bag, but it can happen at any waking time after any duration of sleep.

  • Black screen on resume from sleep using open source AMD/ATI driver

When waking from sleep using systemctl suspend or pm-suspend , I am presented with a black screen. I can still open programs, type, etc. but cannot see what I am doing. I usually just wind up rebooting from whatever terminal I had open, but again I can't see what I am typing. Upon reboot, the screen starts back up again. Everything else seems to resume from sleep just fine, it's just the screen that won't turn back on.
I came from Ubuntu and had this same problem there. However, I only had this problem when using the open source xf86-video driver; when using the proprietary drivers, I was able to suspend/resume just fine. So it seems this problem is specific to the open source drivers.
If I'm using an external monitor, my external monitor will resume just fine after waking from sleep, but the laptop screen will not.
Googling around shows this is a common problem with AMD/ATI cards, and after a lot of attempts and failures I'm interested in knowing if anyone else has solved this problem.
What I've tried so far (without success):
-various quirks included with pm-utils to turn on dpms after resume
    -xrandr after resumption from sleep
==xrandr --output LVDS --off (If used without suspending (so while the screen still works) this seems to crash Gnome the first time around, but Gnome automatically restarts. If used a second time, it completely blanks the screen and requires a reboot)
    ==xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1600x900
-xset dpms force on or xset dpms force off after resumption from sleep
-vbetool dpms off and vbetool dpms on results in error message "Real mode call failed"
-scripts using vbetool or xrandr when resuming from sleep
-switching between virtual consoles and gnome using alt-ctrl-fn-f1 and alt-ctrl-fn-f2 keys
    My setup:
    -HP Envy dv7
    -UEFI dual-boot with Windows 8
    -AMD Radeon HD 7640G
    -xf86-video-ati 1:7.2.0-1 driver
-Gnome DE using GDM login manager
    Thank you.
EDIT: I did try using the proprietary drivers for a time, but found I couldn't adjust my brightness. At first I thought working suspension > adjustable brightness, but I quickly changed my mind after one night of trying to work on an unadjustable maximally bright screen.

Unfortunately I could not fix the problem so I wiped my system and loaded all new drivers before I found this posting.
Is there a way to get the old ATI driver that works? The only one available on the ATI and Lenovo website is the latest one with the problem. I agree with you David, Lenovo should have fixed this problem already with ATI.

  • IBook G4 won't sleep on schedule

I twice tried resetting the PMU as per Apple's instructions (power off then press and release shift, cntrl, option and power buttons) but it hasn't helped. My iBook simply won't sleep when it's scheduled to. The screen darkens when it's supposed to but no sleep.
This is the case both on battery and when plugged in. Both with external keyboard attached and without. Both set at 3 hrs and 1 minute. And it's been happening for several days.
It will only sleep when I close the lid or select sleep from the Apple menu.
Only recent software changes were the latest Apple system updates.
Ideas? Is there something else to reset?
    Thanks.

Your method seems to have worked. My clock went back to 7:01 on 12-31-1969 (after I turned off the Airport, that is; the first time I tried this it automatically give me the correct date and time, so I wasn't sure I'd done it right). Then the iBook went to sleep on its own about 30-60 seconds after the screen went dark.
I should note, though, that I didn't wait that extra 30-60 seconds after resetting the PMU the first way. So that first method may have worked, too -- I just assumed it didn't when the iBook didn't go to sleep immediately after the screen dimmed.
Anyway, thanks for the great tip. Any idea why Apple doesn't mention this on its support page on resetting the PMU? Do you know anything else about this issue? Like why the PMU get's screwy to begin with?
    Thanks again.
