Screen blank on boot up

I have a SunFire V490
Recently when the server is rebooted the screen goes blank from when the CDE is shutdown to when it is started up again.
Has anyone got any ideas what might be causing this?
I've had a quick look in messages but can't find anything in there. I've had a look at eeprom:
eeprom | grep device
output-device=ttya
input-device=ttya
From what I have read this is valid.
It does run through a KVM but I have also tried it with a monitor and keyboard plugged directly in but got the same problem.

POST: Power On Self Test
POST is a PROM-resident piece of software that resides in the on-board flash PROM of the I/O board. POST performs simple, component level, hardware fault detection and isolation tests on the server hardware.
When you say: "....Recently when the server is rebooted....". Rebooting means that Server will go into POST. So I guess this is the why you see that "screen goes blank". POST output is redirected to the serial port.
With the RSC configured you will be able to see POST in the console and check for any HW condition. Actually I will suggest that you install it. It will help you in a future to detect the root cause of unexplained reboots, system crash, etc.

    Hi,
    I have a laptop Satellite P300. On booting up vista the microsoft logo comes up and then when the POST screen should be showing me what the bios is checking the screen is blank.
    It remains blank for 5 to 10 mins then the pointer appears then it finally goes to the desktop.
    I suspect the bios is hanging on something but I can't see cos the screen is blank. I suspect there is a setting somewhere. I can enter the bios but can't find anything in there.
    Also regards to the extremely slow boot, I have disabled nearly all the start up programs but it has made no difference.
    Has anyone any ideas?

    Everything runs slowly but finally the Windows OS boots up properly. Right?
    Hmm. you can access the BIOS press F2 immediately after power button has been pressed.
    This should allow you to access the BIOS. There you should press F9 to set the BIOS to default settings. Save the changes and reboot the unit again.
    Additionally I would recommend checking the HDD. You could use a tool called Drive Fitness Test. This tool can be downloaded for free (google for that).
    By the way; did you try to recover the notebook using recover disk?
    Maybe you should try this but note; this would format the HDD so backup the date before starting recovery.

  • Screen goes blank on boot

    So when I boot up arch on my netbook the screen goes blank but the system continues to boot normally in the background - this happened after a long delayed update to my system.  It happens round about the time when the resolution of the screen changes early in boot.
    I initially thought it was an issue with Plymouth (which it isn't) but it has been removed from my system completely. I do remember several months ago messing around with framebuffer support but as far as I was concerned I reversed the changes. KVM was also disabled when I uninstalled Plymouth.

    As you can see the system boots no problem.
    I used an old Arch live CD to boot and get this log so I can only imagine that it's system specific configuration issue. What concerns me is that the screen blanks so early in boot and I can't even get a visible TTY session - so surely it can't be an issue with the onboard graphics card? I don't know.. That's why I'm here.

    Hey, thanks guys, thanks berbae.. it turns out you were correct. I downgraded the kernel to a previous version I had in my cache.
    I asume that the best way to track this bug would be to keep an eye on that ticket? Pardon my ignorance. Do you know if it's likely we will see a fix?

  • Console does not comes back to life after screen blanking

    This problem has nothing to do with suspend-to-RAM and/or suspend-to-disk (hibernate).
    It is a screen blanking on the console triggered by a timeout in the kernel.
    It can be modified (or disabled) with the setterm command for the current session.
    The issue is still unresolved since the console doesn't comes back to life after hitting a key.
    See post#6 on 2014-07-13 for further details.

    original post on 2014-07-09 titled "blank screen on resume after suspend but screen OK after hibernation" follows:
    Dell Inspiron 9400 (aka E1705) with Radeon X1400 (RV515) (confirmed by dmesg: loading R500 microcode)
    - arch x86_64 fully updated up to 07-JULY-2014
    - xf86-video-ati open source driver installed
    - no (additional; ie: explicitly) installed power management packages such as pm-utils
    - no X installed
    The problem:
    • hibernation works fine; ie: by closing (and waiting a few seconds) and re-opening the lid
    • however resume after suspend isn't working; ie: by pressing any key to resume ... it seems the screen never comes back to life
    After suspend activates (and after I hit a key to activate resume) I see no activity at all (blank screen) but ... if I type some commands (eg: timedatectl etc) and then I close the lid to activate the hibernation sequence re-opening the lid (say, a minute later) the machine comes back from hibernation as expected and I can see the commands (and output) I typed when the screen was blank so ... it seems to me either:
    • the backlight state is not restored on the resume sequence (first thought)
    • the machine shuts down the screen after (a 10 minute) timeout but never activates the suspend sequence (and will never activate resume then) (second thought while reading dmesg output)
    This problem was present on this laptop since my first (and subsequent) arch installations so it seems is not kernel/driver specific since I did many pacman --sysupgrades in between while learning arch.
    The testing sequence (with related entries on included dmesg output):
    - typed timedatectl ... showing 23.29.04
    - now allowing idle time for the machine to suspend
    - suspend starts at 23.39 (ie: after 10 minutes) ... tag it as event1#1
    - after 30 seconds resuming with the space key and after a few seconds typing (blindly) timedatectl ... tag it as event1#2
    - after 60 seconds closing the lid allowing time for hibernation ... tag it as event2#1
    - after 30 seconds opening the lid ... tag it as event2#2
    - now I can see the output for timedatectl (typed blindly on event1#2) and it shows 23.40.11
    As you can see in attached dmesg output (at the bottom of this post) there are (to me) no evident entries for event1#2 (resuming after suspend):

    So the machine shuts off the screen (and/or backlight) but never enters suspend mode because "restoring backlight state" appears once and should appear twice in my testing.
    Why isn't working then ?
    Because the signal to enter suspend mode is never sent/received by the OS ?
    Which brings me to a key question: is the acpi package (which it is not installed) (or something like that) required for such signaling ?
    In the following post a user claims a similar problem but he can see some activity (after resuming from suspend) by directing a bright light to the screen so the problem there seems to be the backlight not powered up again: it is not my case, when I did the same I saw no activity at all.

    I think that it is something wrong with kernel and graphic drivers but i'm not able to solve it from the beginning of using of Arch by me.
    I'm not so sure this issue is software-related only because in my case it seems the laptop screen enters power-saving mode (10-min timeout) on its own without any events logged (as shown by dmesg) so my next thought was OK, I'm going to get rid of this issue disabling the screen power-saving timeout in the BIOS and set it to never power down or something like that and from then on managing power mode manually; ie: when I want to power down I will just use systemctl suspend/hibernate which work fine ... problem is: there are no related options in my BIOS for such timeout.
    The only timeouts I have are in /etc/systemd/logind.conf set to 30min (#IdleActionSec) (commented) by default so these are not in effect because the screens goes blank after 10m which is less than the (default) 30m in logind. Maybe setting loggind to 9m (un-commented) to catch the event before the machine-default one ?

    how do you mean? does it not turn on? or is it on but nothing booting up?
    If it doesn't turn on is it possible that the battery is totally drained? if so, charge it fora  while and see if that fixes it. If it doesn't boot up you can try resetting it - hold down the sleep and home keys, past the red power down slider and until you see the silver apple logo come up.
    You can also try restoring it with iTunes.
    If that doesn't work then you may need to take it into the Apple store and have them take a look at it.

  • X220 Screen Blanking out

    Hi,
    I have a problem on my X220 where the screen blanks out.
    Here's how it happens.
    First, the system hangs, noticably (like freezes for about half a second)
    Then the screen goes completely black
    And then comes back on
    None of my programs are closed or reset (Chrome, Gtalk etc.) and only thing that seems to be different is that the Lenovo Power Manager/Wireless Manager Icons seem to have reset.
    Anybody know what could be causing this?
    (if it matters, I have my pagefile disabled, but have 8GB of ram installed.  I closely monitor my ram usage and it has never been above 4.2 GB)

    I had the same issue you describe. After booting into WIndows the system blanks a few times and eventually hangs. Sometimes I can just see a popup appearing showing "Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered".
    The strange thing is that my system has this issue ever since I got yhe machine and first powered it on. Even completion of the factory windows installation was not possible due to this crash. I found out that when the Graphics Driver was installed the system would crash.
    I have send it back for repair yesterday and I am still waiting to hear the cause of this blanking/crashing issue. Quite anoying because the system is not usable at all.
    Any suggestions what this issue can be?!

  • [solved] Incorrect Screen Resolution on Boot

    As the title suggests my screen has the incorrect resolution on boot. I have an Nvidia card with two monitors plugged into it.
    After installing arch I found that screen was blank on boot. This could be fixed in two ways.
    Unplugging one monitor from the graphic's card DVI output and plugging it into the motherboard's DVI output. This gave me the correct resolution but if It would require me to reconnect the monitor to the graphics card after I logged in and started X (configured to use twinview with nvidia)
    Adding 'nomodeset' to the end of the my kernel line. This option will not require me to reconnect one monitor but uses an incorrect resolution
    The second option is what I am currently using. I am wondering if there is anything I can do to fix the resolution whilst retaining the convenience of not unplugging my monitor.

    Sounds like you have the internal graphics activated in the bios even though you use a dedicated Nvidia card. If I were you, I'd deactivate the internal graphics.
    Then we come to the resolution. The nvidia driver does not handle the console, so you'll have tp use either vesafb or uvesafb for it. They generally work ok, but they're limited to resolutions in your card's vbios, and in many cases the resolution you want isn't there.

  • Screen blanking craziness with kde4.4

    This only happens in kde for some reason, never other DE's. In the previous kde 4.3 i had the powersave unchecked, which never worked, also had to make sure never was listed in options which then screen blanking would not occur. Now in 4.4 there is no option never. I turn everythging off, it still blanks, driving me nuts grr. Is there some kind of control freak enviro dev working for kde, lol? It could just be that i am being thick, any help would be appreciated, tanx in advance.

    I want to add a "Me Too!" here. I can't speak for the other DE's, I only use KDE. But no matter what I have the prefs set to, something insists on blanking the screen. It's extremely annoying to have to boot the box, and open a console and give xset a command. This is new with KDE 4.4.
    It's a new install, I don't have a X conf file. This is my first time with Arch, and after installing my first thought was "Outstanding! Works out of the box, no having to poke at X to get it to work."
    Can someone please figure this out?

  • Flickering Screen (blanks out and comes back)

    Hi all,
    since a few days I have a rather weird problem with my mini. The mini is connected via DVI to a Samsung SyncMaster 173T and has been so for the last 2.5 years. Everything worked perfect until....
    Scrolling to a website the screen suddenly went blank (black) and after a second it came back. This happened randomly and various places, always when scrolling with the third mouse button (mighty mouse bluetooth). I could not really reproduce it until this sunday. Fresh boot of the mini, start iTunes and browse the CoverArt with the third mousebutton. After a while (~20 seconds) the screen blanks and comes back. If I continue scrolling in blanks more often and sometimes I can also see strange lines flickering through the screen before it blanks. This is 100 % reproducable.
    So I thought ok, this is probably some graphic card issue. For verification I started Nanosaur (3D-Game), but here no issues. Works just fine.
    I then tried to start the Apple Hardware test from the Install CD (took we a while to figure out how to start it....), but this one seems either not to start or not to give a display after the start. So I can't see the results.
    Additional info: Not did I move my Mac nor my screen. Everything is in the same place like minimum 1 year!
    What can I do to check the root cause ?

    You could try booting into Safe mode (hold down the shift key through a restart until you see a message on the screen that the Mac is starting safe) and run like that for a while to see if the problem goes away or not. If it clears up, then that would imply something about the configuration of your main account is causing the problem. If the problem persist under safe mode, then that would point more to a hardware problem, though I have to say those symptoms are very unique and difficult to account for as a hardware failure.
    You could also try using a regular USB mouse for a while, though it's hard to see how the BT Mighty Mouse could cause this. Good luck.

  • Zen 8 gig - Screen blank

    So I recently got a 8 gig Zen, but am having a problem of when I switch on and then off the key lock all I get is a bright white screen on the display. The buttons still work and music is playing ok, just no display, if I then switch off and then back on the display is there but looks more like a 256 colour display. The only way to get the correct display back is to boot into recovery mode, then select reboot (this works but would rather not have to this all the time!) Has anyone else experienced this Is there a bug with the 8 gig Zen Is there a patch to fix Or have i purchased a faulty device (which is what i suspect)
    Device was fully charged before using, then software installed, then update ran to upgrade to firmware version .2.0e. I have ran the recovery tool, all this seems to do is re-install current firmware version though.

  • Screen Blanks Out while in use

    I have a very odd problem with my Macbook. To be clear, this was purchased as an Apple Refurbished model over the holiday season, so it's only a month or five weeks old. It's the 2gHz Black Macbook, 80GB HDD, 1GB ram, OSX 10.4.x (unsure which revision of 10.4).
    The first incident happened on New Year's Day. I was using the laptop on battery power, and somewhere between 20% and 30%, the screen blanked out. I figured that the power had run out, and it hibernated (odd, I usually get a "your battery is almost drained, please switch to power" message), so I plugged it in and re-opened the lid.
    No response. I can hear the optical drive grind on, but that's about it. The screen flickers once, but stays black thereafter.
    I took it into the Apple Store later that day, and had a Genius look at it. Of course, as soon as I bring it into the store, I open the lid; and lo and behold, the screen works perfectly. The Genius looked in my system logs and told me that the system had indeed hibernated, but when it came back online, there was a problem with the video drivers, so the screen didn't recognize that it should be on. Told me it was a one-time thing, and that everything should be just fine.
    Well, I took it home and kept using it, testing it a couple of times by burning the battery down overnight, and plugging it in during the day and checking it. Each time, it came back from Hibernation just fine.
    After a week or so of testing it, I just returned to my normal usage patterns, until Sunday night.
    I was using the laptop - this time on wall power! - and I had the screen blankout. Again, I didn't know what was going on, so I did the only thing that seemed to work last time, I closed the laptop, unplugged and replugged it, and checked it a few hours later. Again, my screen works perfectly, as though nothing had ever happened.
    I didn't get a chance to thoroughly test it on Monday night, but under normal usage patterns, it worked just fine. I bring it into work tonight (Tuesday night), _AND IT HAPPENS AGAIN_. The same circumstances as the last time it happened: plugged in, just idling at the desktop.
    I'm beginning to think there's a pattern, but I don't know what's happening. I should mention that on all three occasions, I physically shutdown the machine, which would seem to make it such that when it's turned back on, I'm getting a fresh boot. When I turn the power back on, I do see the white light at the front, and I hear the optical drive making noise, but no "Apple" sound, and no screen.
    I followed the advice of the Apple support article - clearing the PRAM - as I had two of the three indicators that the laptop was turning on, but still nothing (but that assumes that we're using a fresh boot). I also attempted to shut down the machine using the keyboard shortcut - ctrlcommandeject - but that makes no noticeable difference.
    So, I'm asking for advice. One, what can I do, short-term, to get the unit working again? I'll try and keep this updated if it pulls the magical "I don't know what you're talking about, I'm working just fine now!" maneouvre again. When I get off work in the morning, I'm apt to take this into the Genius Bar again, as I now have a trend of this happening. It may also be possible that this is a genuinely defective unit, as it was a refurb, which means someone returned it to Apple (probably for the same reason).
    Anyway, help where you can, moral support where you can't. Or, if you like, mock my plight and make pithy commentary about how I'm out of luck

    And yet some more information:
    I wanted to test something. Namely, was the computer "on" or not? So I inserted a blank DVD. The slot-loading machinery accepted it just fine. However, pushing the "eject" button does nothing.
    The only conclusion I seem to be able to draw is that the computer is still in sleep state (does a sleeping Mac allow DVD's to be inserted? I don't know!). If that is indeed the case, then I have no idea how to wake it up; the power button does nothing (except holding it down until the unit shuts off), and opening/closing the lid has no effect.

    Here's the list of the most annoying issues that affect me since updating my iPad 2 64GB w/Cellular iPad to IOS 8:
    EXTREMELY SLOW - When opening apps, or switching between them - We are talking just the built-in apps. Mail, Safari, Settings....
    Extremely slow Wi-Fi AND broadband. The Wi-Fi is the worst though. Horrible. Page load times are 2 to 4x slower than my wife's iPad.
    Battery life reduced by at least 25%. Used to make it all day long, now I am having to plug it in.
    Heat - It is working so hard that the processor is heating up. That can't be healthy for it, and surely the majority of the power issues stem from this.
    Copy/Paste not functioning correctly between browser windows. Oh this is frustrating. I just want to paste the URL of one website I am on to Facebook, for instance. Even though I COPY, it's pasting in info I clipped a earlier in the day to one browser tab, but if I open another one, it will paste the correct information. You never know what you are going to get.
    Cannot post a photo to facebook by hitting the camera icon when leaving a reply or making a post (using web browser version)... It starts the upload, then just stops. I *CAN* go to photos, then SHARE it to facebook, but that doesn't allow me to post a photo along with a reply.
    Multiple app crashes per day. This I can deal with. It's nothing new, it's just more frequent. Safari and Mail seem to be the major culprits. It wouldn't be so bad except it takes 2-4 seconds to reopen the crashed app. Sometimes as much as 10 seconds.
    And that's just the annoying ones....

  • Dialog box display won't update after screen blank or being moved

    I have a modeless dialog box used for status display by a plugin I wrote for Acrobat. Everything works fine until the screen blanks or the user moves the dialog box on the screen, at which point no further updates to the dialog box are displayed. My plugin consumes 100% of CPU for long periods of time so the program can appear dead without this display being updated, but nothing I have tried seems to make any difference. The dialog box is generated with ADM and things I have tried include calling "Update" on the dialog box at regular intervals, the windows "Sleep" function to yield the CPU periodically, and a host of similar tactics.
    I'm guessing all the code will get run together once I click submit, but here is how I create the diaglog box (it was working fine without the "WinAppRegisterModelessDialog", but I saw a reference to it elsewhere and tried it to see if it would help, not sure if it actually serves any useful purpose):

    OK guys here's an update. First I went to BIOS and updated the initial display setting to "LCD panel only" from "Auto". At first I thought it helped, because when I worked at the laptop without the external screen attached, the internal LCD panel resumed normally from off (previously this didn't work).
    But today while I was in the office with my external 19" LCD screen attached, and both of them went off after being idle for 10 minutes, the internal LCD panel didn't resume again. So I've tried the Fn + F5 key combination to switch between modes, and I switched from dualview back to single. The internal LCD panel blinked for a second and then turned off immediately, and from that moment on, I was without picture on both of them. SO I ended up hibernating and resuming again. :( An important note - as soon as the computer began hibernating, the LCD went on and I could see the whole progress of hibernation before it turned off.
    Also another note - when I'm in dualview, I always have keep the internal LCD panel as the primary screen. So unfortunately, when it doesn't resume, I don't have access to the taskbar etc to try more things...
    Any more thoughts?

  • HP DV4-1155SE Black Screen and Wont Boot. Please Help!

    Hello all I am working on an Hp DV4-1155SE. I have tested the memory modules, the hard drive and everything else that I can take out of the computer easily. Everything works but!, The laptop will not boot into the bios or anything else. Black screen, wont boot and i have the bios file that HP supplies on the support page of the site. I have looked at the instructions that a few people have posted about re flashing the bios and that does not seem to help me at all with this AMD processor. If anyone can please offer any help at all this would be greatly appreciated.

    My problem started before the bios-screen.
    This is what I tried this evening:
    - Disconnected all non-essential devices...no effect.
    - Cleared the CMOS...system booted to OS!    Screens still garbled! 
    - Put in an older graphics-card...No artifacts! 
    - Put my MSI NX6600GT (AGP) back in...screen grabled while booting. Once in OS everything
      looks fine at first. Later I noticed some odd random pixels. Playing movies is working fine.
      Playing 3D games results in all kinds of strange looking artifacts.
    - Installed the latest NVidia- drivers...no effect.
    Is my problem still MOBO related or Graphics Adapter?
    Any further advice?

  • Yoga 2 Pro - Screen Flickering and Screen Blanking

    Hi,
    I love the Yoga 2 Pro. But i have fews issues with it. Especially when used on battery.
    My screen flicker from time to time. The onyl fix i found was to close the lid to put the laptop to sleep and the reopen it. Not very convinient.
    An other issue I encounter is the screen blanking after a while when the computer is not in use. It's like the computer blank the screen to save battery power, but when you want to reuse it again, it won't start again. THe only fix is to hard reset the computer (eg : press 10s the power button)
    I am running a fresh clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro with all the Lenovo Drivers up to date (exept the BIOS one)
    If you could help me fix my issues. I think it's software related.
    Do you think i should put the BIOS update ? Does anybody ever try with a clean windows 8.1 install ?

    I have the same issue, only it occurs at low brightness.
    It flickers rapidly for a few seconds and goes away. It occasionally comes back, making it unable to work in darker environments with the rapid flickers.
    I've checked all the auto-brightness and intel power saving options. I tried using both refresh rates, and they don't make a difference. The problem occurs in all power plans and even in the non-Lenovo energy manger modes. All drivers and BIOS are up to date.
    I'm at a complete loss as to why this is happening...I would greatly appreciate a solution. I sincerely hope I don't have a defective laptop..):
