Screen Briefly Flashing Black

Over the last few days, I've developed a problem where my screen intermittenly goes dark for a period of a second or less. This will happen three or four times in succession and then things will revert to normal for a few minutes. The dark periods are not uniform in length. I believe input is not frozen: if I am typing when the screen blacks out, everything I type is present when the display is restored.
My display is a 20" Apple Widescreen Cinema Display, less than six months old, connected via DVI to the built-in video card. There is a small light at the lower right that lights when the monitor has power but is not receiving a video signal--at boot time, or in sleep mode--and that light does NOT light up when the screen goes black.
I have searched all the log files in /var/log, /Library/Logs, and ~/Library/Logs, and none of them have any entries with timestamps matching the black-screen episodes.
I do have a different screen problem that MAY be related. Intermittently, over the last several months, I've noticed that when the screen saver tries to turn on, it fails--the machine repeated flashes back and forth between the normal screen and the start of the screen-saver, at even intervals of about a half-second. When this happens, it generates error messages in /var/log/windowserver.log repeating the lines:
Jul 01 00:09:21 [66] "loginwindow" (0x4c03) set hot key operating mode to all disabled
Jul 01 00:09:21 [66] Hot key operating mode is now all disabled
Jul 01 00:09:21 [66] "loginwindow" (0x4c03) set hot key operating mode to normal
Jul 01 00:09:21 [66] Hot key operating mode is now normal
Often when this happens, I need to log out and back in again to make many key shortcuts work (including Exposé and cmd-shift-Q to log out).
Has anyone run into something like this? I have a copy of Leopard on the way, but it's getting hard to work with the intermittently blacking-out screen.
Dave

An update--still leaving this "unanswered" because I haven't reached a final resolution.
I'm almost certain it's a hardware problem--I booted from the Tiger DVD and experience the same issue, so it's not the software.
In an effort to determine whether it was the video hardware or the monitor, I took the monitor in to my office (where I have a docked Dell laptop) and brought the Dell monitor (same size, also uses DVI connection) home. For about three days, I had no black-out incidents in either location.
I swapped the monitors back last night and have not yet encountered the problems. The only differences I can tell between how the Apple display was hooked up at home and how it was hooked up at work are that (a) the work machine has no Firewire, so the firewire plug was left hanging, and (b) the monitor USB was connected in both places, but at home, I connect my mouse and keyboard to the monitor USB and at work they were connected to the computer/dock directly.
The monitor is now set up exactly as before--FW plugged in, USB plugged in and supporting mouse and keyboard--and when and if the problem reappears I will start varying those connections.

When i am starting the macbook pro, the screen was flashing black and white, and then to color to color, and the whole process repeat all over again, is there any suggestion in solving this, or is there no way to solve this and i need to bring it to the apple support?

Sounds as if you're having a problem with your GPU (graphics card). Only Apple can diagnose and fix this, so the best thing would be to take your machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP.

    Please help!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Screen briefly flashes white but does not display the page when the Safari icon or other icons are tapped.

A problem has just started with my IPAD Air after 3 months of use.
If I try to open Safari by tapping on the icon the screen  briefly flashes white but does not display the page.
Similarly if I try to open Settings page, Mail page, Calendar or Clock the screen just briefly flashes but the Apps do not run.
Some of the Apps do work on tapping the icon e.g. Maps, iBooks, Appstore, iTunes, Newstand etc.
I do have some website links which display when the icon is tapped e.g. John Lewis but some links do not work.
I have ensured that the ipad is fully charged,  powered it off an on again, and cleaned the screen with a lint free cloth  but the
    same problem keeps occurring.

I saume you used a second display at one time, otherwise the Display settings wouldn't be treating your primary display as a secondary.
IF you open your System Preferences>Displays (-System Preferences) and click "Gather Windows" it should pull everything to the display on which you clicked it.

I have an Ipod touch. Since this morning I am not able to open any of my purchased apps. The screen briefly flashes but the apps don't start. Can anyone help?

    - Try resetting the iPod. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Then download/install new app.

  • Has anyone else had the issue of the the screen randomly flashing black only when using Messages app in landscape?

I have been having an issue with the screen flashing black for several seconds then turning back on. This olny occurs in the Messages app and only in landscape mode. I have never noticed the issue in any other app. The issue is 100% repeatable. Has anyone else had this issue or know of any solutions to what seems to be a bug?
    -iPhone 5s running iOS 7.1
    KCM

I think this is an issue with the phone's proximity sensor (the one that turns the screen off when you hold it up to your ear). It's a bug that seems to occur when you switch to another app (any app) while still on a phone call. You'll notice in Messages that the screen goes dark when you move your thumb over the earpiece/iSight camera, but not when you move your other thumb.
Simplest solution is to force-quit the Messages app (double-click the home button, and swipe up on the app). The problem should resolve itself when you restart Messages.

  • Brightness keys not working anymore and screen frequently flashing black and staying black!

I had my macbook pro in for repair twice last month. They replaced the logic board and had to take the screen off and look at it due to there being a potential crack. Now, when i got the macbook back the first time, after replacing the logic board, everything was fine, the brightness keys did not work at first but a restart fixed the problem. 5 days later i had it back in so they could look at the screen because i thought there was a crack on it, which turned out just to be some debris on the inside! Still had to pay a 50 quid inspection charge!
ever since the macbook has returned from this the brightness keys have had a delayed response in that, when i increase or decrease the brightness it took about 10 seconds for the screen to actually change. This happened everytime.
A few days ago for no reason, the screen started to occasianally flash black. It wasnt a problem at first, but sometimes it flashes back and stays black so i have to restart my computer. Sometimes when returning from sleep it stays black as well. On top of this, the brightness keys have completely stopped working all together now.
My laptop is not in warrenty anymore, it ran out after i got it back the second time. I was too busy with work and i needed to use the laptop so i couldnt really sort anything out.
Is there any policy saying that if the laptop comes back from repair and has new problems not caused by the customer, but by the repairer, then they will fix it free of charge?
    Many thanks

    nobody can help??

  • Screen periodically flashing black.

every once in a while, three or four times a minute my screen goes black it comes back on (for lack of a better term) right away without waking it or anything, it just flashes black. earlier i was hearing a small clicking noise like that of when you turn on or shutdown your macbook. i was told to take it in to an apple store to get it checked out and back up my hard drive. is there a connection? is this another problem? is it more urgent? help!?. now, i'm really getting worried.

There could be several reasons... one of which could be a theme or app that is incompatible with OS5.
For now, Do a simple reboot on the BlackBerry in this manner: With the BlackBerry device POWERED ON, remove the battery for a minute, and then reinsert the battery to reboot. A reboot in this manner is prescribed for most glitches and operating system errors, and you will lose no data on the device doing this.
    Does it reboot now?

  • External monitor briefly flashes black about once a minute

Since upgrading to Lion, the external Apple Cinema Display attached to my MacBook Pro flashes to a black screen and back again roughly once per minute. It's maddening and distracting. It seems to happen more frequently when QuickTime Player is active, but it can happen when I'm working in any application.
    My setup is admittedly unusual:
    * 15" MacBook Pro 2.33gHz Core 2 Duo, 3GB RAM, in closed-lid ("clamshell") mode
    * 23" Apple Cinema Display (Lucite) with ADC connector
    * Apple powered DVI->ADC adapter (the huge, white one -- it's literally the size of a Mac Mini)
Lion's running like a champ otherwise, but this is just frustrating enough to be driving me crazy. Anyone else seeing the issue, with or without one of these older displays and the Apple adapter?

    Hi DJ
I had a similar problem with my acer display, it showed up, that it lost synchronization of the refresh rate somehow sometimes. For me the fix was to download [SwitchRes|http://www.switchres.info/html/SRX/DL.shtml], setting some different vertical refresh rates (from 60Hz to 68Hz) there, restarting the Book and then selecting 62Hz within the SysPrefs/Displays window. The nominal refresh rate of my display is 60Hz but this ended with a total blackout, it works steady with 62Hz. After this procedure I could delete SwitchRes and ApplicationEnhancer that came with it, the custom refresh rates remained. Be aware that ApplicationEnhancer caused some troubles with OSX 10.5.
    Good Luck P

  • My Ipod touch wont turn on and screen just flashes black?

my ipod touch hasnt been working lately. I was at the beach and the battery died but we didnt have any chargers so i waited untill we got home to plug it in. When i did the ipod got really messed up and it would just turn off when i unplugged it. So i tried to restore it and when it started it said preparing ipod for restore and the screen would just turn off and start flashing a black screen. Ive tried regular and DFU restore but nothing works. Does anyone know how to fix this or if it is truely broken?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Screen flashing black only when viewing .pdf or .doc

I installed OpenOffice about a month ago. Shortly thereafter, my screen began flashing black whenever (and only when) I opened a document or pdf.
I installed OpenOffice and installed Microsoft Word. No help. I uninstalled Adobe Reader and reinstalled it. Still same problem. I called Dell computers. They had me do a System Restore.
No help. For some reason, they had me log in as an administrator. No help. The screen only flashes when a .doc or .pdf is open. It's a software, not hardware problem. Please help.

Assuming that you are on Windows, it could be a problem with your graphics driver.  What is your display adapter, device driver version & date?  See http://forums.adobe.com/thread/945765

  • My screen is flashing grey and black.

My screen is flashing black and white. I have tried a soft reset and that didn't fix it.

    Anne,
boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Are you now able to get past the grey screen?

  • Late 2008 Macbook Pro Screen Flashes Black

Earlier this year I had a problem with the screen of my late 2008 15" Macbook Pro flashing black. The entire screen would flash black for about half a second, then come back on. This would happen maybe once a day or as frequently as once every minute or so.
In January I took it to the Apple store for repairs, at which time they serviced my computer twice (Jan 10-14, Jan 14-15) to fix the problem. Everything was awesome until this month when I started noticing more issues. My battery was "swollen" and the fans were clicking (probably because I was also having over heating issues after upgrading to Lion). Anyway, I take the computer in, the employees at the Genius bar are very helpful, but as we're sitting there looking at my computer--the screen flashes. Not once, but 5 times. I confirmed that the Apple employee saw it and he took it in to get repaired.
I just got it back--they replaced the logic board for the third time, the ODD Super Drive, Optical Cable, battery, and two fans.
......aaannndd my screen just flashed black again. I'm not sure what's going on. Do I have a dud? They also didn't screw in one of the back screws all the way so I have to take it to the store to get it put in (I don't have that tiny of a screw driver). It's really annoying that they didn't put it in all the way, considering it sticks out enough to scratch the surface of any table I'm working on.
Anyway, anyone else continuing to have these issues?

Update: let it rest for ten minutes. Rebooted, I get a grey screen with vertical rainbow colored lines in three places.
