Screen brightness changes without me doing it

I just bought a refurbished HP Pavilion TS Sleekbook 15.  I am loving it except the screen brightness changes without me doing anything and it is driving me crazy!!  It dims and brightens sometimes when I click on something and other times for no apparent reason.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
This question was solved.

Hi Angeliize, and welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I  understand that you are having a problem with the display screen brightness dimming without you changing it. I will try my best to help you with this issue. To better assist you, could you please tell me the whole model number of your computer and the operating system that is running on it. Here are some guides for How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number? and Which Windows operating system am I running?
The dimming could be related to the power settings on your Sleekbook. Here is a document for Disable Auto-Dimming of the Screen on Your HP Laptop that has steps for changing the dimming settings.
I hope this information helps, please let me know how it goes.
Good luck and have a great day!

  • MBP 2011 Screen brightness changing regardless of the ambient light

As stated in the subject my brand new MBP 2011 screen brightness changes on its own, yes i know about the ambient light sensor, but my screen is going from med brightness all the way to minimum brightness even though the ambient light is constant. yes I know i can turn it off, but why build in an ambient light feature that just makes the screen go to mimimum brightness when in a well lit room??
or do i have a faulty one??

I too have this problem on my spanking new MacBook Pro.  Called AppleCare and they said they weren't aware of this issue.
Meanwhile, this is my 1st mac.  Had it for a few weeks now.  Decided to open iTunes for the 1st time.  The whole MacBook Freezes, no mouse interactivity, reboot required.  This happens EVERY time I start iTunes which I no longer do.  Apparently it's a known issue which Apple has patched(unsuccessfully).  But hey c'mon, I mean iTunes?  This is one of the core apps which SHOULD be tested extensively against the hardware. When you consider Apple PROVIDES the hardware, this is simply unacceptable.  Unbelievable even.  I simply can't believe how poor this is from a major company.  But hey my MacBook Pro LOOKS GOOD right, so who cares if it's a technically malfunctioning piece of junk.
Here's my theory.  Is part of Apple's patch deliberately reducing screen brightness without user authorisation when the MacBook starts to overheat, all because they know they've been incompetent/negligent with their QA testing and the hardware can't handle the software?  If so, why have users not been informed?
I'm from Australia and we have this so-so comedian called Chris Lily who fans have taken to calling a genius, the joke amongst non-fans being the word genius has been dumbed down over the years to be almost meaningless.   Anyway, maybe a certified Apple 'genius' can explain the reasoning for the apparently deliberate brightness reductions?

This sounds like the optimized backlight that the phone uses. See the following topic for more information:

  • Screen brightness changes on its own

My laptop screen brightened all of a sudden on its own, 1/3 - 1/2 EV. I was editing a photo in PSCS3 when this occurred, the photo was from Lightroom. The brightness change effected everything, not just PS. For the past several days I've been editing photos in LR & thought I had the tone adjusted pretty good on all the photos. Today when I looked at the photos again, I felt like I needed to brighten then up some. After making exposure/brightness/tonecurve adj. to the photos today, I needed to do editing in PS, and as I was editing, the screen made a brightness change. I recalibrated the monitor & the brightness stayed the same. How could the previous monitor profile be turned off & all of a sudden turn itself back on. Windows Vista on Sony Vaio laptop (yeah I know I need something besides a laptop screen to edit photos). This probably has nothing to do with PS but I thought I would try on this forum as it's usually very helpful. Perhaps you can suggest another forum that might help. Thanks!

Sometimes a power management scheme will kick in on a laptop and change the monitor brightness. When editing you should always work with external power connected and all settings set at Never for that state.
And, if you're serious, get a good monitor!

  • HT1311 I have just tried to download an app and my itunes has changed my country to Auckland, can this be changed without me entering my card details again.....why has this changed without me doing it?

Hi, I have just tried to download an app and my itunes has changed my country to Auckland, can this be changed without me entering my card details again.....why has itunes changed this without me doing it?, or is it a problem with io7? as all fine prior to upgrade.

  • Screen brightness changes between standbys

I just received my new Macbol Pro C2D after realizing that the Macbook, just didn't have enough graphic power. And the quality of the screen was suspect, considering all f the ghosting.
But I noticed that when I start up my macbook from a sleep, the brightness often changes. The only thing i can hope it is is that the laptop is trying to be helpful by adjusting it's brightness to suit the the current envionment; because it has to have a light sensor because of the keyboard black light. But I would rather it didn't do it. Or is my laptop just broken?

This is usual behaviour and is drriven by the ambient light sensor. You can turn this behaviour off in the Displays System Preference.

  • Screen brightness changes unexpectedly?

When adding my contacts I noticed the screen brightened itself while I was performing text entry. While using Safari and entering some data into a text box this morning the screen brightened itself again to the same level as yesterday's auto-brightening. Has anyone else seen this?

I have the same issue with my 16Gig (white) 3G.
With auto-brightness set to on, the iPhone's display will bloom even in a completely dark room. If the sensor in fact worked properly, I would think the display should stay "low".
My old 1st gen iPhone would keep the brightness down in a dark room, and only increase if it sensed ambient light. The iPhone 3G will bloom at the most oddest times, and not increase at times when there is considerable ambient light. When it refuses to increase, I have to manually increase the brightness, even though auto-brightness is set to on. Other times I think there's no rhyme or reason to it.
I'm hoping this can be addressed in a software update, rather than having a defective ambient light sensor. I don't know why they changed it from the 1st gen, as that one appeared reliable and worked as intended.

  • Screen brightness changes?

my touchsmart running windows 7.  if I don't use the mouse or touch the screen for a short period of time, the brightness lessens. I have to move the mouse or touch the screen to restore the original brightness of the screen.  this can be annoying when watching a movie on hulu, or reading lengthly articles.  How do I stop this from happening?

Sounds like a Windows 7 setting -- I see the same thing on my (non-touch) HP laptop.
    Try searching for:
       power options
from the start menu and seeing if there are screen display / monitor settings you can change.

  • U510 Screen brightness changing based on color of the windows on the screen

This is really bothering me because I have a few applications which natively have very dark color pallets.
When I have an open desktop, which is basically a white wallpaper with a logo on it and the task bar my laptop has the brightness that I want. But then if I bring Sublime Text up and maximize it, Sublime Text has a very dark themed GUI, my screen becomes darker on it's own and I can see thr transition.
I have disabled adaptive brightness, I have disabled "Display Power Saving Technology" within the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel (and pretty much everything else in it as well), I have stopped the Adaptive Brightness sensor process, I have uninstalled anything that looked like bloatware or unnecessary-control-panel-ware, and I have updated to the most recent version of the Intel HD drivers. Nothing has resolved this. I'm starting to think the only way to solve this is a fresh OS install and even then I don't know if that will do it.
I have literally spent hours trying to figure this out.

    Hello,
since there was no solution in here to fix that auto adjustment to either color contrast or brightness, I will tell you how I fixed mine.
I have lenovo ThinkPad T431 with windows 7
    go to
Control Panel -> Intel HD Graphics and media  ( this is what I have as driver ) -> Advance (or Basic) Mode -> Power
I just changed both setting for "Plugged in" and "On battery" so that the power plan is set to
    Maximum performance.
with the addition for "On batter", I unchecked the 2 settings in the section "Power Conservation Features"
    then
Apply and wollaha everything is great no more auto adjustment when I am viewing light or dark website or applications.
I hope this works for anyone who had suffered from this feature from Intel HD Graphics Driver.

If you're not fluent in syncing and restoring I'd stop by the Apple Store and let them have a look at it. Just an idea, if you haven't turned off the noise cancellation turn that off,  might as well make sure.

  • How do I change the fonts on the main page.My fonts have recently changed without my doing anything. They are like 6 point instead of the 12 I am used to. Email font is now huge. Is this an ATT/Yahoo problem or Firefox. Safari fonts seem to be o.k.

How do I change the fonts on the home page? They recently shrank from 12 to very tiny..(6 pt?). I did nothing to change them, but after the event tried to change them using "preferences-Fonts"which had no effect. ATT seems to have made a change in their email. The fonts in the email are now huge (18 pt?). This could be an ATT/Yahoo problem with Mac, although Safari seems to be working o. k.

Jim, extensions are also add-ons. Add-ons include extensions, themes and plugins.
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you need to make sure it's not coming from one of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] and select ''Disable all add-ons''. If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and theme. You can troubleshoot plugins the same way.
If you want support for one of your add-ons, you'll need to contact its author.

  • My data setting has changed without me doing anything.

Can someone explain the following. I'm traveling in Japan and have disabled data on my iPhone 5. However, twice in the past two days I've noticed my home screen to be active despite the phone having been tucked away in my backpack for hours. Suspicious, I've checked my settings and discovered that the data is on and that autolock, normally set to one minute, has tripped to "never". To protect myself I've turned the phone off. Can someone explain what's happening? Having happened twice, it can't be a freak or random "glitch".

If you're not fluent in syncing and restoring I'd stop by the Apple Store and let them have a look at it. Just an idea, if you haven't turned off the noise cancellation turn that off,  might as well make sure.

While I was browsing the internet suddenly nothing would happen when I clicked a link. Upon closing and opening firefox and trying to load a web page it said "the proxy server is refusing connection. Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections."
I did manage to fix the problem by changing the proxy settings from manual to auto-detect but what disturbs me is how those settings could be changed without me doing so right in the middle of using the internet. I dont know if its a bug or a security issue but I thought I would let you guys know.

  • Change Screen Brightness

Is there any way to adjust the brightness of the screen in Adobe Air for Desktop (running in Windows 8.1)?
I have an app that I want to always run at full screen brightness.
If not, does anyone know of any ANEs that will work?
If also not, does anyone know where to find a tutorial on making ANEs?

I you not familar with Native Extensions and C++ / C - you can try avoid using it using already done external apps. Just find one that can work in background so users will not see it.
http://www.nelsonpires.com/software/dimmer/ go there and download simple app.
Using executing NativeProcess you can run it. But before you can edit Opacity value in XML. So scheme may be next:
    1) using adobe air edit xml and update opacity value
    2) attach listener to main app exit so when you close it - you also must termiate your Dimmer
    3) run Dimmer with NativeProcess API from Adobe Air
    4) when you exit from main app - listener from step 2 will fire and you must close Dimmer from step using exit() method
This app actually not reduce brightness and just add black overlay with opacity. In most cases it's work prefectly. When you need to terminate external NativeProcess just call exit()
You may note that if you have some external app that can cover your functionality - better to use it instead developing own DLL Because Developing DLLs require addition skills.
