Screen Capture Blurry After Transcode

This is probably a dumb question because I am not usually the one working with video, but I really need help! I am doing a demonstration on my computer and I need to make it into a DVD. I used Windows Media Encoder 3 to capture my screen and then save it as a wmv. This file looks fine. I edited the video in Premier CS4 and it still looks fine. But when I try making the Premier file into a DVD using Encore, it makes the quality look horrible. Pictures become really pixelated, and text just becomes big blobs. I tried to transcode using the highest setting, but this did not help. Is there something else I can do? Thanks for any help!

First, the screen capture to WMV will heavily compress the footage. WMV is a streaming media, delivery-only format, and is not meant to be edited - strike one. Now, PrPro, while it will Import WMV, will have to basically convert it to DV-AVI to allow for Frame-level editing. DV-AVI conversion, even at an internal basis, does a little bit of compression. Though nothing like the quality hit just going to WMV, there is a tiny hit there is some - strike 2 (well, probably really strike 1.25...). Then, you need to get to MPEG-2 for the DVD. That is another heavily compressed format. When starting with a DV-AVI, it does a nice job. When you start with a WMV, to though the process of converting it back to I-frame footage to edit, and then compress the heck out of it again - strike 3. This does not make THAT much difference whether you do the MPEG-2 conversion (Transcoding) in Encore, or from PrPro. The key word is "much." You might want to experiment with using a standalone encoder to create your MPEG-2, rather than either Encore, or PrPro. Some are better. The ones used by Hollywood with 10-pass encoding run into the tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of dollars, and are run by experts, who do nothing else all day, 5 days per week. Besides going to a stand-alone encoder, you will need to bit-budget to find out how much material vs the bit-rate, will fit your disc.
The better workflow would be to NOT use WMV, but instead an I-frame format/CODEC in the first place. DV-AVI (though slightly compressed) would be an ideal choice. Then, the ultimate quality to MPEG-2 would be to Export from PrPro is something like the Lagarith Lossless CODEC, and use a stand-alone encoder and bit-budgeting to get the ultimate 100% DVD-compliant MPEG-2. That would be Imported into Encore, and if not detected automatically should be set to Do Not Transcode.
Hope that this explains where the quality is going, and provides a workflow that would cut the losses.

  • Screen capture blurry in final cut, but not Motion

I screen captured something from the internet using snapz pro (I tried DV-ntsc, h.264, and now using 'none'). It looks great when its motion, but after render, looks bad in final cut. I tried bringing the file into motion and then exporting a loss-less from there and then bringing into final cut, but its the same problem of being blurry.
the video was captured 4x3, though its larger than 720x480. Thats one of the reasons I threw it into Motion, because it would standardize the size in the case that final cut didnt like it. I need to get rid of the blur. help.
    eric

Also, if your file is LARGER in Motion, as you said, and then you drop it into a DV sequence, not only will it shrink, but it will inherit the DV 5:1 compression.
What size are you using in Motion? What settings? If you want it to look that good in FCP, you need to use the same settings in FCP. If you are adding it to a DV sequence, then you will have to live with the DV compression. OR, try it in a DV50 sequence. Better compression, higher bit rate.

  • Screen Capture blurry - no mater what

I have a screen capture of software that is saved as a quicktime file. no mater what I do it is blurry in FCP. Even if I use compressor to convert it to DV first. It is not in the right aspect ration, is that what is causing my issues?
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I save from SnapzPro using the Animation codec at 30fps. I then have to use Cinema Tools to conform it to 29.97 (this bypasses a bug in FCP where you import your footage and it suddenly becomes 10fps). Then I import it into FCP, use this trick to get a timeline:
www.proapptips.com/shane NON STANDARD CODECS IN FCP
Then I edit, export as a reference movie and use Compressor to compress it for the web.

  • Iphone 4 screen went blurry after lcd replacement.

On my iphone 4, Lcd was broken, I bought a new lcd and tried to change myself, but when i am done everything, my iphone 4 screen went blurry with many different colourful lines, and finally screen stays white, i can't use it at all. How can i fix it? BTW when i tried to fix it using itunes my phone keeps rebooting so Itunes couldn't fix it, so i sense there is problem on hardware still. Thanks in advance.

There is no software fix for a hardware problem. This is most definitely a hardware problem. Your best bets are either send it out to someone who does professional iPhone repairs or buy a new phone.

  • Screen/fonts blurry after VDA use

After a presentation with my Mac connected to a VGA this morning, I suddenly have a totally screwed up screen. It looks blurry and unclear, as if someone covered it with a transparent sheet. I tried to adjust some things in System Preferences, but neither the fonts smoother nor a higher resolution do the trick. Can anyone help me?

1280x800 is the correct resolution. If that is what is selected in the Displays panel and it appears that your image is undistorted and fills the entire active area of your display then you should be back to normal. Note, there will still be a black border around the active LCD image but if you look carefully or examine the display when your MacBook is turned off you should be able to tell the difference between the black border and the actual image area on the LCD.
You may also want to make certain that you have the correct color profile selected for the internal LCD display (check the "Color" tab in the Displays panel).

  • Screen recording becomes blurry after exporting to iMovie

After creating a screen recording using Quicktime (and the video is perfectly clear), I am trying to export to iMovie to edit the video more easily and to add an audio track. However, once the video is turned into an iMovie project, it is blurry. Still blurry after stabilization too. Please help!

After creating a screen recording using Quicktime (and the video is perfectly clear), I am trying to export to iMovie to edit the video more easily and to add an audio track. However, once the video is turned into an iMovie project, it is blurry. Still blurry after stabilization too.
Is this a minimum information guessing game? Is this a "full" or "partial" screen recording? What are the actual dimensions of the screen capture? Was the capture made using QT or a third-party app? Did you perform a manual or automatic "export" or simply import the screen capture file to iMovie? In what type iMovie project are you editing the exported or imported screen captured file? Why are you stabilizing a screen recording? (I.e., the stabilization routine further rescales the content.)
If I were merely to make a guess, It would be that your work flow is rescaling the content making it blurry in iMovie as compared to the original capture file.

  • Captivate 6 Screens Blurry after Rescaling Project

After I rescaled my project from 1280 x 720 down to 1024 x 576, the individual screens look blurry. Any ideas?...please help!

Just today we started a project with a ton of software demos. We set up the right monitor to 1024 x 768 to capture to recordings and screen captures.
I designed to interface at 1400 x 900 to allow the the captures to be inserted into the project without the need to scale or to capture a portion of the screen. Normally we would have navigation and instructions on the left side of the interface, but the customer wanted a top/bottom interface this time.
We publish scalable which works very well. We also publish to 100% with zero compression.
If we want to scale down (1024 x 658 for example) we change the swf size in the html output. That way we still have to original resolution of the Captivate file. Granted it would be optimal to actually resize before output, but we the users don't have a bandwidth issue.
Scaling down is always a better option as opposed to scaling up.

  • I am trying to screen capture a simulation session in captivate 6 and then edit it in premiere pro cc 2014 when I import the video into premiere, it is blurry

Caveat - I am relatively new to adobe captivate and premiere, so hopefully this is a simple setting issue that I have not been able to figure out.  When I do a video capture in captivate 6 the output mp4 is very clear.  If I play it in windows media player it is crisp and clear.  If I import that same mp4 into Premiere Pro CC 2014, it is very blurry.  My simulation has gauges and dials that need to be clear and I need to "mix" audio, narration, and system sounds into this video.  Any help would be extremely appreciated!

OK - back to my caveat.  When I select preferences in Premiere and look at the playback setting, I get options for Preroll, Postroll, Step forward/back many, mercury transmit, Audio device, Adobe DV and disable video output when in backgroud (all of which I am not smart enough to comprehend).
I apologize for my ignorance. So as I continued to read your question, I, of course googled "how to set playback resolution in premiere pro" and I learned how to do that....  They were set to 1/2.  I adjusted to full and it seems to be clear now....  I think you just helped me, help myself.  Thank you!  Did I get it right?  Is there any more you can recommend when it comes to taking a screen capture video and making it into an awesome demo?
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you,
    Troy

  • My mac stops working after Screen capture (Cmd+Shift+4)

    Hi all,
this is really a serious issue!
After upgrading to 10.6.6, I have found a bug with the Screen capture feature.
After several screen shots (CmdShift4) OSX is hanging. You can move the mouse, but everything else is frozen.
I've tested it prior to the upgrade with 10.6.5 -> no problem
I've tested it with 10.6.6 on 2 different Macbook Pros (different models) and both have the same issue with 10.6.6
    Please apple, fix this bug!!
    thnx
    viTus

I don't think there is a bug for Apple to fix, as far as I can tell. I've taken plenty of screenshots using cmd-shift-4 since the update (I actually did a number just a few days ago), and my system is working just fine, as always. I also haven't heard any other reports of this kind of problem. So, the question is, what's going wrong with your systems?
Since it's happening on two different machines, my inclination would be to blame third-party software you've got installed. Try [starting up in Safe Mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455]... does the problem still happen then? Safe mode disables third-party software that may be loading at startup/login, so if the problem goes away in safe mode, then it's just a matter of figuring out what software is causing the problem.
Also, are you using any other third-party hardware, especially input devices, with both MacBooks when you're taking the screen shots? If so, try disconnecting all of it and use just the built-in keyboard and trackpad. If the problem goes away then, it's probably a hardware incompatibility.

  • Screen Captures Look Blurry in Motion

I'm creating lossless screen captures using the animation codec (iShowU) and importing them into Motion3 where I'm resizing them slightly. For some reason they always lose their crisp resolution as opposed to when resized in FCP. They look like they have a light gaussian blur applied, even at 100% screen resolution. The project and export settings seem fine (800x600, square pixel, 8-bit, progressive, 29.97). Even in preview with it set to best, it's blurry when compared to the raw footage.
Is there any way to get around this problem?
Using latest version of FCS2. Output is for webcast.

    Howdy,
This is a long-shot, but check the Position value of the image. By default, images added to Motion are centered, and depending on the image that can mean a sub-pixel position (fractional pixel values), which would cause more filtering. Check and see if the image is located at a sub-pixel positon, such as 320.5, and try changing it to a whole number.

  • I've tried 2 different screen capture devices, and in both cases, audio stops recording after 20 or 30 seconds, but video is fine.  The audio disappears

I've tried 2 different screen capture devices, and in both cases, audio stops recording after 20 or 30 seconds, but video is fine.  The audio disappears with both programs.  Does anyone know what is happening with my audio capture?

Update, I took the webcam home over the weekend and tried on my home network and the outcome was the same video fine - audio delayed, is this a Skype for desktop issue?

  • Jpegs look blurry after crop at fit to screen but are fine at 50%... Why?

I recently upgraded to CS4 and have system 10.6.2.  Jpegs appear blurry after cropping at fit to screen but are fine at 16%, 50% or 100%...  My CS2 version never did this. Anyone know how to fix this bug?
    Thanks

Your resolution (in the pic) is likely set to 72PPI. In smaller JPGs when they are enlarged to full screen, they will appear pixelated or blurry.
Before cropping, try setting the PPI to 300.
I had to do this when making PNGs for conversion to icons, because they would blur when converted. I set almost everything I do to 300PPI.

  • Bell Sound, after Screen Capture

When I do a screen capture (Shift/Cmd/3 or 4), in addition to the camera shutter sound, about 3 seconds later, i now hear a bell.
I've had the MacBook for 3+ years, and I believe this is something recent.
After the keystrokes, I get the shutter sound, about 1 second later, the icon appears, and about 2 seconds after that, the bell.
This is on both my MacBook13, and MacBook Pro (10.6.8)
Can I eliminate the bell sound, and keep just the shutter sound ?

    Try this...

    Try it now...

  • MBP freezes after Screen Capture (Cmd+Shift+4)

  • Opening macbook pro from sleep after some hours, login screen is blurry with progress bar?

I just got my first 13'' MBP three days ago.  Both last night and the night before I closed the lid to put it to sleep overnight for about 7 hours whilst plugged into the AC as to not drain unnecessary power. In the morning when I opened the lid it was on the login page but the screen was blurry and there was a progress bar on the bottom of the screen. My sister has had a MBP for a few months but this has never happened to her. The problem only lasted about 30 seconds but is it normal? Am I maybe doing something wrong?

Did you quit out all of your applications prior to letting the MBP sleep over night?
If concerned, you can either call AppleCare or return the MBP.  You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return and/or exchange w/no questions asked.
