Screen Capture (Screen Shot) file default
The screen capture hidden shortcut using command, shift 4 keys creates an image in the png file format. Is there a way of changing that default to jpg format so I don't have to convert each time in Preview?
Someone will come along in a minute and offer you the unix code to do so, but if you prefer a program that can do it for you, download Deeper (search at macupdate.com or versiontracker.com). Deeper gives you control over file type and default save location for screenshots, as well as all kinds of other (safe) tweaks you can do to the Mac OS.

TDS6804B screen capture with optional file overwrite
I have a TDS6804B and I need to save a screen capture as a BMP. However, I need have the option (via some sort of popup question) to save over the file if it exists already. I'm sure that I'l figure out the whole thing eventually, but if someone has a solution already, I'd appreciate the assistance (as would my boss).
Thanks,
Allen
Solved!
Go to Solution.I have the instrument driver, and I made a simple vi to "export" the
scope screen, but I wanted some sort of dialog only if the file already
existed. So...I made a set of vi's. I've attached them in case anyone
needs a simple file replacement option when exporting the screen for a
6000 series scope. The "File Overwrite.vi" should be of use to
anyone. I'm not sure how well I "wrote" these (and... whether they're
worth sharing), but they should do what I need anyway.

Screen Capture (file format) used to be pdf
Is there a way to change the default file format for a screen capture. The file format in OS 10.3 used to capture as a PDF. Now the format is PNG. I know you can open the file in preview and resave it.
I just want to see if there is someway to change preferences or something so it will default as a pdf file.
thanksHi, amantia and costicladop —
amantia, welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are various options to accomplish your objective.
OnyX 1.6.5 (a free utility) and Cocktail 3.6.5 ($14.95 shareware utility) offer the option to change graphic file format with a "single click" — in OnyX »» Appearance »» Screen Capture and Cocktail »» Interface »» Misc. »» Screenshot file format, respectively.
They're both just implementing Terminal commands — which provide another option.
bmp, gif, jpg, jpg-2000, pdf, photoshop, pict, png, sgi, tga, and tiff options are available in both utilities.
Hope this helps . . .
Regards,
Dean
p.s. costicladop — following your link engages an automatic download. (Duh.) Wanting to read something first, I went to http://www.arenasoftware.com/ — which forwards to http://www.digitalarena.co.nz/. The software page on that site only mentions three software products, none of which is shotChoice. Could you provide a descriptive link? Thanks! -
Captured Screen pauses after a few seconds in slide
Hi, i'm currently working on a basic Captivate project using slides with screen captured
video (.swf files). Everything is working fine however when
I preview the project the video keeps pausing after a couple of seconds, to start them again I need to hit the play
button, anyone know how to just make them play without pausing when the slide is loaded. Any advice would be great, many thanks!Hi, found the problem, one of the slide buttons had 'pause after 1.5 seconds' applied to it, which obviously paused the slide and the slide video.

Help ! Screen Capture sound every 30 seconds
Hi all I need help! Last week in the middle of my work day nothing special, the system started playing the camera shutter / screen capture. I started timing between the shutter, every 30 seconds, very annoying - the camera shutter sound - same as the shift-4 screen capture sound and same as the sound that occurs when you press the back button in terminal. I have a 15 inch mac book pro. 2009 model.
I wondered whether someone had installed a hidden shell script or apple script program and is capturing my screen and maybe sending it over the net.
I have checked activity monitor and did not notice any programs running like "screencapture" or anything else like that. I have also turned hidden files visable on, but i can't find any screen capture directory or files: .jpg, .pdf, .png files I should be seeing lots of them for every 30 seconds per capture. Back to terminal here is my dump from ps ax command:

Help!!! Pls.Make sure the sound is coming from your speakers and not from your hard drive, by muting the speakers. If the sound continues, it may be your hard drive's heads parking (which shouldn't happen every 30 seconds either, but that's a very different problem). If it doesn't continue and is therefore exactly what you think it is, I'm as puzzled as you are.

Automated screen captures in emulator tests
Hi all
I'm created a "virtual user" to run and test my midp apps by running them in j2meunit environment which in turn is run in the toolkit emulator. All this is run in my Ant build.
I would like from my j2meunit tests to be able to create screen captures for my documentation. I do this routinely with my J2SE applications when run in JUnit or JFCUnit but I really like to be able to create these documentation screen captures (screen shots or screen dumps) automatically.
Could anyone help me or point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance!
MortenI have since recalled the tool I was thinking of was an authoring tool and the problem I had when I looked at it was I couldn't write the topics the way I wanted and I couldn't use it as a tool to extract the images. I might have used it just for that purpose.
Take a look at http://www.indoition.com and download the PDF there. It lists lots of tools and may you will find something in that.
If you do find something that works for you, don't forget to post back here.

Hi
I'm wondering if DVDPlayer does what I have come to know as screen captures - obtaining a still "photo" from a video format. I've checked around in the help info but I'm not seeing anything called screen capture, nor anyting that sounds like it to me.
Thanks,

iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.3) newly switched iMac ownerI'm 90% sure Apple has been required to build in copy right protection.Apple is too easily a target for the film industry to sue over this kind of thing - of course the beige box PC OEM is too small to bother with.
For your future reference in any application you can go to that Applications Menu (i.e. the 'Safari' menu in Safari) then choose 'Services' then 'Grab' then 'Screen' or 'Selection' (Selection is just part of the screen!). This service is available in the vast majority of Mac OS X Applications.
As Adam says above you can also type a key stroke. The Keystroke <apple>, <shift> and <3> allows you to take a whole-screen grab. The keystroke <apple>, <shift> and <4> allows you to select just the area of screen you actually want. (Just drag the box when the crosshairs appear). Using either option saves the screen capture as a file to the Desktop. (i.e. Picture1.jpg)
However, Screen Grabs do not appear possible when DVD Player is running.
Under OS 9 they used to come out as a blank greeny black file.
To grab a DVD you'll need to rip it first.
Unless you've got a third party screen grab programme that may get around the issue.

Grab - default screen capture file location
HI. Is there a way to have Grab save screen captures to a location other than the Desktop? I checked in Preferences and there are none.
Thanks!are you talking about the app "Grab" or are you talking about screen capture via the keystrokes cmd-shift-3 and cmd-shift-4? if you're talking about the cmd-shift-3/4 then there is an easy way to change the save location for the file.
in terminal issue the following command
*defaults write com.apple.screencapture location /LOCATION*
where LOCATION is the location of the directory you want to save to.
for example if you wanted to save to a folder that you've created on your desktop called 'Screenshots' then the command would be
*defaults write com.apple.screencapture location /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Desktop/Screenshots*
or alternatively
*defaults write com.apple.screencapture location ~/Desktop/Screenshots*
this will take effect once you log out and log back in.
hope this helps -
How do I add time/date stamp to my screen capture file names?

I'm trying to add time/date stamp to my screen capture file names. (at the moment it's just 'Picture 1' etc..)
I've tried the following command in terminal but have not had success. please help!!
defaults write com.apple.screencapture name "datestamp" at "timestamp"
killall SystemUIServerSurely someone else will provide a better solution. Meanwhile, however, you might want to try the following script. Copy and paste the script into the AppleScript Editor's window and save it as an application. Then drop your screen capture files on the droplet's Finder icon.
on open theDroppedFiles
tell application "Finder"
repeat with thisFile in theDroppedFiles
set theFileName to name of thisFile
if (word 1 of theFileName is "Picture") and ¬
(word 2 of theFileName = word -2 of theFileName) then
set theExtension to name extension of thisFile
set P to offset of theExtension in theFileName
set theCreationDate to creation date of thisFile
set dateStamp to short date string of theCreationDate
set timeStamp to time string of theCreationDate
set name of thisFile to "Screen Shot " & dateStamp ¬
& " at " & timeStamp & "." & theExtension
end if
end repeat
end tell

Change Default Screen Capture Format from PNG to JPG
I'm running Mac OS 10.4.8 on a G5 Duo Core (Power PC). Up until about 10.4.1, my screen captures (Apple-Shift-4) would result in a PDF file. Then they started coming out as PNG files. I would strongly prefer that they default to jpg files, since I typically change the PNG files to JPG.
Can anyone tell me how to change the default for screen captures from PNG format to jpg format?
I have tried to use the process described at http://textsnippets.com/posts/show/131 but this does not change the default format for screen captures. I've also discussed this issue with Apple online help, but they were not able to change the default format either.
Any suggestions?Download and use Screenshots Preference Pane:
http://www.ego-systems.com/Products/screenshotsprefpane.html
It's free and easy, gives you about a dozen options on how to save the shot and allows you to change where it's saved to.
I also use Capture Me:
http://www.chimoosoft.com/captureme.html
Best screen capture utility I've tried, you can save each screen shot in any format you want or have it go. It also works as a great picture sticky because the windows floats above other windows. It's also free,

Capture Screen Shot not working in Full Motion
I am trying to use Full Motion Recording to capture mouse
movement, while also manually capturing screen shots. The screen
shots are not being captured though. I've tried the default Print
Screen key, and also resetting it to the Down key, with no success.
I can capture the screen shots when Full Motion Recording is not
active.
The information in the Help files and Knowledgebase seem to
indicate that it's possible to manually capture screens while
recording full motion. Any suggestions about what could be going
wrong?
Thanks.Hi LisaLouLou and welcome to our community
I think the help may be misleading you here. If you are
recording by using the total “Full Motion Capture”,
Captivate ignores the Print Screen key because you have told it
that the entire project is to be recorded using Full Motion. Hence,
there is no slide by slide based recording as there is using the
other options.
After you have recorded, you are free to insert blank slides,
then add images as needed in case that helps.

How do I change the default iPhone screen capture format to .jpg?
I have an iPhone 5 (but I'm sure users with other models would like to do this as well).
My online searches have not found an answer -- I did find a discussion thread that was essentially, "Why would you want to do that?" Those posts are not welcome! Not looking for a work-around, an intermediate step, or the need to change the file format on a computer, etc. Just want to hit the two buttons and have the resulting capture be a JPEG file.
Not interested in jailbreaking or using apps that require jailbreak -- Want to do this with a new phone.
Thank you in advance for any help!!

Changing file type format in Screen Capture (shift command 4)
You'd think this would be in a preference menu! But it's nowhere to be found in any apps preference or system preferences.... I've seen posts how to do it in Terminal... and people sell programs to do it.... but Tiger and Leopard have t built in.. sort of....
The default file format when using SCREEN CAPTURE (ShiftCommand4) was a .pdf ... but then it was changed to .png Some people can't read .png... so I wanted my captures to be in .jpg format.
You can change the file format type of your SCREEN CAPTURE to any of the following:
JPG, JPG-2000, TIFF, BMP, PDF, Photoshop, PICT, SGI, PBG, TGA
But first you have to have a file you want to change (say it is a png).
Open the file using Preview.
Once open, under File (in the menu bar) go down to SAVE AS.
There's you'll see FORMAT and a pull down menu. Choose which one you want...
Screen capture will now open your captured pictures in that format.
Crazy, huh?The OP here was using a keyboard shortcut, not Grabber.
I did some further exploring. I just tried TinkerTool again, and again was able to change the file format of saved screencapture files to jpeg. TinkerTool modifies the com.apple.screencapture.plist file the same way that the Terminal command does.
This clearly works for command-shift-3 and command-shift-4, which save the screencapture image as a file. However, on looking more closely at the O.P.s initial post in this thread, he/she actually said
I use keyboard shortcut control/command/shift/4
When you include the control key in the command, the screencapture image gets saved to the clipboard instead of to a file, and you wouldn't normally be aware of its format until you pasted the clipboard contents somewhere else. I don't know where the OP was pasting it, but as was noted in the thread cited above by Baltwo, pasting a sceencapture image from the clipboard into a mail.app message results in a .tiff file being pasted. I also find this to be true in my system - perhaps this is what the OP was doing all along.
However this is an issue caused by the receiving app, not by the screencapture function. It's possible to look directly at the contents of the clipboard via:
Finder>Edit Menu>Show Clipboard
With my screenshot format set to jpeg by TinkerTool, I used control-command-shift-4 to save a screenshot to the clipboard. Looking directly at the clipboard in Finder as above, the clipboard image was a jpeg. When I then pasted the clipboard contents into a mail message and used Mail>File Menu>QuickLook Attachments, the pasted graphic in the mail message was a .tiff.
