Screen Cutoff On 1680x1050 Monitor [SOLVED]

Hello,
I am having a problem with Linux not displaying properly on my 1680x1050 monitor. Every machine I've hooked up to it, Arch, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Slackware, have all had the same problem. Windows, however, does not have this problem.
The problem is that the bottom and the left edge of the screen are slightly off the monitor. This makes windows get cut off. It is not an X issue because it happens even when I'm just using the console - no X and no DE.
I really am lost at this point. I know it isn't the monitor, because Windows displays just fine.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
HPG

EDIT:  I just realised that the screenshot doesn't even show the cutoff. Very strange.

I'm sorry, I clearly wasn't thinking when I posted this. Didn't even know where to start.
It is an LG Flatron W2254TQ
Graphics hardware is irrelevant because I have tried several machines with differing hardware (AMD, Intel and NVidia)
It is a VGA input device.
I've checked the monitor settings, and, as I said, it works fine with Windows so I know that is not the problem.

EDIT:  It was a faulty VGA cable. Thanks for the replies anyways. I guess I should always check the easy stuff before the hard from now on!

  • Full Screen Problem With Dual Monitor Viewing

I have a 64 Bit system, Chrome browser and with flash player built in.  I am attempting to view videos on a 2nd monitor while working on the primary monitor.  I have tried this on various sites, TNT.tv, USANetworks.com, etc...  I select full screen viewing.  A message is displayed to exit full screen press escape.  However, when I attempt to do anything else automatically exit full screen on the second monitor.   This should not be an issue and with the way most people view video online, they are doing so on a 2nd monitor or TV.  I have done a google search and it is a common problem, but there is no solution that seems to work.

I have just posted the same question - missed yours.
Adobe could you take a look into this - I think solving this problem can't be that hard.

Are you talking about the green '+' button in the top left corner? That technically doesn't enlarge it. It switches the window from the default window size to the custom size you made. You can enlarge the window by moving your mouse to the bottom right corner of the window, and dragging until you get the size you want.

I want to have my itunes visualizer on my TV which is connected via HDMI adapter, and still have access to full screen itunes and my desktop on the main display.
Any suggestions?  App downloads that can do this?  Please let me know.

You can't do it.  This has been an issue since Lion.

  • How to switch off internal macbook screen when using external monitor(s)

as far as i observed, adding external displays ( running different screens on them, not mirroring)  to a macbook pro  increases the gpu workload and with that comes temperature rise in the laptop and increase in ventilator noise - and probably increased hardware aging and risk of component faillure due to high temperature inside the laptop.
simply try connecting two external 27" screens and open some flash video on both of them. then run a temperature monitoring software and watch temps rise, compared to running same flash videos / demanding tasks only on one connected external screen or only on the laptop screen with no external monitor connected.
especially in mavericks, due to its increased background routines, such a set-up appears ever the more taxing, then again who does not love apple`s nice adds showing laptops with two 27” screens connected to it and the workspace vision they invoke....
i have seen temps around 100° to 102° celsius on a 13" macbook pro 2012 edition, which i would expect is territory where the cpu / gpu temp safety switches will trigger system shutdown any time soon ( hardware status before verified as fully in order by apple service and default osx installation)
imagine your anti-virus software starting some realtime content screening while runnign some demanding tasks already and the system shuts down easily (all such situation observed in reality)
(would be interesting to see how a retina display macbook fares with 2 external monitors running demanding tasks, considering the retina display already increased taxing for the gpu - any experience from users of such a setup would be very much appreciated as it will provide critical purchase decision intelligence for all of us envisioning a retina-book and two big screens adoring our desks...)
turning down the macbook`s built-in screen`s backlight may reduce power consumption but i have not seen any evidence that it switches off the gpu-to-screen feed and respective gpu load - it certainly did not prevent gpu, cpu, board, etc temps to rise to borderline levels.
so the key question here is, how to switch off the macbook pro`s built-in screen in order to avoid gpu cycles being wasted on that screen ( and the resulting heat developments)  when working with big external screen(s)  connected to the laptop ?

this thread talks about running several monitors as advertised by apple and running demanding task on them.
with the lid open, the keyboard offers a very efficiant heat escape vector, which is blocked when the lid is closed - this is a basic and commonsense insulation effect.  this thread also mentions the use of temperature monitoring software and thus a repeatable test setup. the temps recorded were also mentioned. they rose when the lid was closed, the running task remaining unchanged. as far as i could track down the cpus in discussion will shut down around the 105 degree celsius range. i observed system shut downs when the system approached 103° celsius.  not to mention that the fans will run loud well before that.
again this is on hardware checked and ok-ed by apple service.
the question still welcoming an expert answer: is there any way to switch off the built-in macbook monitor while the lid is open ?

  • Can I use split screens on and extra monitor I have. I can get mirror image on both screens, but not a split screen. The monitor is 1600 x 900.

Can I use split screens on an extra monitor I have? I can get a mirror image on both screens, but not a split screen. The monitor is 1600 x 900 AOC 20inch monitor. Hope I haven't wasted my money buying this £69 monitor. My 13" Macbook Pro is a little small for my ageing eyes. Thanks

In the display settings on your computer uncheck "mirrored". This will put the displays in "extended" mode. In extended mode you can set the external display to its native resolution as well as drag windows from your computer to the external monitor. I assume that is what you mean when you say "split screen".

Full screen content will remain in full-screen on secondary monitors, allowing users to watch full-screen content while working on another display.
    Tested on Windows 7 x64 SP1 with:
    - Internet Explorer 9
    - Firefox Release, Beta, Aurora, Nightly
    - Opera 12 build 1116
    In bugbase.adobe.com I cannot choose v11.2.x

  • Full Screen mode and two monitors

I consider this an oddity in Lion. I have two monitors. If I have Mail open in the left one and let's say Address book on the right one, and I put Mail into full screen mode, the other monitor goes gray. So . . . no way to have one monitor in full screen mode and still use the second monitor!
    RW

This is Apple's warped sense of humor about how full screen should work.  Aparrently the designer only uses tablets so has no clue how the real world works.
This is totally hated by most  power users but,  alas,  Apple aren't doing anything about fixing this patently broken design,  let alone admitting that they could have made a mistake.
Your options are to either put up with it or back out to Snow Leopard.

  • Full screen preview with one monitor

    Hello,
I'm using Premiere Pro CS5 on a Mac with a single monitor. I would like to see the full screen preview on this monitor, hiding all GUI elements.
By reading around, I could only find the suggestion of selecting the Preview pane and press the ~ or ` key. Unfortunatly, it seems that this shortcut only triggers the Maximize or Return to the Original Size commands. GUI elements remain in the display.
Is there some preference to select somewhere?
    Thank you, Paolo

That's as close as you can get with Premiere; it doesn't do a single-monitor fullscreen the way FCP does.

  • Full Screen Preview in 2nd Monitor

On a dual display system, is there any way to view the video preview of DCP, full screen on your other monitor ?

    David:
    Of course!
Open your Project & try View > Video Playback > Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - Full screen.
This, of course, is spelled out in the manual that came with the program. Now, I'm not one of those dudes who gets all mad when someone asks a question that can be answered with a manual read, but just so you know, you'll learn so much about the potential of FCP if you do. Sure, it takes some commitment, but man, you'll have no regrets.

  • Black screen on my hp monitor

On my other computer that I built myself I have much more options on amd catalyst control center. So I decided to go download the official amd drivers from amd. So I ran their installer it did warn me that my screen may flicker multiple times during the installation. So I waited for it to install 2 hours later it still didn't install and all I had was a black screen on my hp monitor and no signal on my second monitor. Assuming my computer was still on and it was a graphics error I pressed windows key and r to open the run dialog then ran shutdown -s which didnt do anything so 10 minutes later I just forced my computer to shutdown (Holding powerbutton down for 5 seconds) When I turned my computer back on I saw the hp logo then I just had a blackscreen...
After about 10 minutes of researching I found that default amd drivers weren't compatible with HP I also had no warning of this so had to boot into ubuntu live cd put the files i needed onto a usb thumbdrive and then reset my computer using f11 on boot
CONGRATZ HP (You could have atleast warned me...)

  • How do I make the DVD player play full screen in my external monitor instead of my laptop?

I just upgraded to Lion, and I have my laptop screen and my external monitor, and every time I tell my computer to play a DVD in full screen, it makes the full screen slide over from my giant external montior to my tiny laptop screen. How do I make it not do this? I would like to be able to watch my DVDs on the larger high-res monitor instead of my tiny laptop screen, but I can't seem to find the right preferences window or something.

With DVD player open, have you check the menu bar > Window > Show/Hide Controller?

  • Login screen wallpaper on 2nd monitor

I have 2 monitors connected to my Mac. When I have the login screen up, only one monitor displays anything (grey effect background, login box, etc). The second monitor just appears bright white. Is there a way to have the second monitor display something, even if it's only the same wallpaper as the login monitor? This isn't really a showstopper, more of an annoyance.

Looks as though this very minor issue has been sorted out in the 10.7.2 update. Thanks Apple.

  • Full screen video on 2nd monitor blacks out 1st screen

When I play a video full screen on a second monitor, iTunes blacks out the first screen and I can't see the Windows desktop. Is there a way around this?

I'm having this problem as well. Apparnetly the world thinks this is acceptable behavior. I do not. I'm trying to work and feed video from iTunes to an HDTV next to me. Why in the world would I want my 3 other monitors to blank???
Tripply amazing is that it's worked this way for quite a long time. Apple isn't fixing it, so they must think this is a great FEATURE.
